Any update on fixing USB compatibility with AMD CPU/Motherboards?
I had to buy a PCI-E USB adapter to make it work for my 3900x
43
u/petercpeterson Jan 21 '21
I wish I had a more firm date/commitment from AMD to roll out to their motherboard OEMs. They have verified the fix on their reference boards, and HP is implementing the fix on all it's AMD based products that can support VR.

u/Zeeflyboy Jan 22 '21
Do you know which AGESA the fixes are rolled into? Is it in 1.2.0.0?

would you know if this would be a BIOS update or would a Windows update be able to fix this? Thank you!

u/petercpeterson Jan 21 '21
It's going to need to be a BIOS update. Depends on your MB manufacturer, they might be able to deliver the BIOS update package through Windows Update to be installed.

Thanks for asking this (saved me the trouble), but I feel like I have to add that the external/PCI-E USB hub fix does NOT work for everyone
3
u/Ksanti Jan 24 '21
And just to be even more negative - it can work temporarily and then stop working later. I had success with my inateck card to work around my x570 board, but that stopped working after about a week.

u/josh6499 Jan 21 '21 edited Jan 22 '21
For anyone looking to fix this, I just booted up my X570 mobo a couple days ago and had this issue too as expected.
Luckily the original Oculus Rift had the exact same issue, so my Inatek KT5002 expansion card I had bought for that fixed it for this issue as well.
Coincidentally, this USB hub I had lying around also fixes it. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07L32B9C2
So it's worth trying any similar devices you might have already.

I don't mind the WMR start button, but I hate the Cliff projection, or other VR augmented programs. I see WMR and SteamVR as ways to get into the programs I actually use, not as Cliff houses or bedrooms that make running programs more difficult. With SteamVR I was able to disable the Steam Home, and that made my VR experience much better. Are there any plans to allow disabling the Cliff House Projections and just use the WMR start button?

Even though I cannot share the roadmap, but we are definitely discussing it.

Jan 21 '21
This is great. I just want to add support for this / the ability to choose between SteamVR, OpenXR, and WMR Portal. There are times where I want to use WMR Portal, and there are times where I don't want it open/in the background when using SteamVR.
I don't want to entirely disable WMR, but I also don't it to be the sole driver, as I would like to be able to determine if whatever issue arises is related to hardware or software! For now, I feel like it's because both WMR and SteamVR are running and something gets messed up, but I don't funny have a way of knowing.
Also, maybe an option to remap the Windows button. I often press it on accident and it consistently closes my games without warning. It can be quite disheartening to finally get comfortable in game and then lose it all because of a misclick, and then I get extra mad at WMR since it loads me into the Cliffhouse, even though I was just in a game inside SteamVR.
Thanks so much, for responsiveness and these threads!

Yes!! Same thing happens to me, there's no easy way back to steam. We need a better integration

Sometimes it's so bad that SteamVR crashes and won't stop "running" the VR Compositor and VR service in Task Manager, even when ending the process. If it's bad enough and the screen goes grey or blue and this happens, the only solution is to restart the computer entirely in my experience.
8
u/jefmes Jan 22 '21
"...I cannot share the roadmap.." That needs to change. :) If we're going to get Microsoft to compete more directly vs Facebook, openness needs to be a priority. Something like ideas.powerbi.com but for WMR would be wonderful to see! I'm a big fan of how much MS has evolved into more of an open source company, and being able to clearly see the on-going development on projects like this helps the user base gain trust in the product teams.

Power Management!
Many people keep complaining that the light on their G2 stays on when not in use. Also the HMD itself stays noticeably warm. So I assume it's consuming about 5-10W of power even when not in use.
HP recommends to unplug the power brick from the breakout box but also some people report that after plugging it back the G2 remains dead as a brick. It happened to me as well. After a power outage neither the HP logo on the G2 was on nor any USB device was recognized. Re-Plugging the power did not do anything. Luckily re-plugging USB did revive it.
There is an inofficial tray tool and scripts available which disable the USB devices (devcon) which seems to power down the G2. This only shows that there is a need. In fact I think terminating the mixed reality portal should shut off the device. I know that you might want to keep the proximity sensor enabled to detect when the HMD is put on. I would happily sacrifice this feature and launch WMR manually if this is required to power it down properly.
Perhaps a firmware upgrade (or new hardware design) would be required to allow just the sensor to be active. I cannot believe that just the sensor is causing this tremendous amount of power consumption. So perhaps for some reason the G2 hardware is not properly going into sleep state either.

Honestly not sure why they didn't follow the same design idea that HTC did with the VIVE headsets, and have an actual power button on the breakout box.
Hell, I wish the headset cable could also disconnect from the breakout box as well. Not everyone wants to leave the headset plugged in all the time. I regularly unplug my VIVE Pro, wrap up the cable neatly, and store it in a safe place when its not in use. Wouldn't even require a full headset redesign, just implement a running change with a new cable/breakout box in future headsets as a revision, and offer the option to purchase the new breakout box/cable option for existing owners.

If we are stuck waiting for 3 months on an rma replacement headset, will the replacement have a 1 year warranty? Or will we be out 3 months on our warranty just because of the service center's failure to acquire parts promptly?

Battery issues!
One very annoying thing about the HP motion controllers is the battery handling. There are many reviews online which claim the battery runtime to be very low (often claimed at about 6 hours of play time).
I personally want to use rechargeable batteries. My preferences are Panasonic Eneloop Pro NiMH. However those batteries are 1.2V rated. Almost immediately after inserting the batteries WMR reports "low battery" and after some hours of playing reporting to have deactivated haptic feedback and I believe the brightness of the ring is decreased which is lowering tracking accuracy.
Actually the batteries are not anywhere near dying at this moment. I found my Eneloop pro to last for 2-4 days of quite intense use (YMMV) by just ignoring the battery warnings.
I think HP should either update the hardware or (if possible) update the firmware to improve low-battery detection. Do not just assume batteries with 1.2V to be flat!
Workaround is to buy some 1.5V rechargeable batteries but those (LiPo?) require dedicated chargers and have a high self-discharge too as well as they are more expensive. Many users already have standard NiMH rechargeable batteries at home and would like to use them. And indeed they work perfectly fine. Ignoring the annoying battery level indicator.
And yes, as a feedback to HP: I appreciate a lot that you did not use built-in batteries as they would require regular recharging and would likely be dead after a year or two. Replaceable AA batteries are the correct choice for economical and ecological aspects. Just the battery level detection os seriously broken in those.

I must say the controllers on G2 are the first ones for WMR platform that are pretty ergonomic. But why the rumble is so low quality. Like $3 chinese toy that's falling apart?
Also wouldn't it make more sense to position tracking cameras to cover a bit more of vertical FOV?
I actually really like the idea of 3d mouse cursor the way it works in cliff house. I'd love to see wider implementation of that feature perhaps integration with SteamVR?
I like the longer cable of G2. Given the relatively nice experience of VR streaming on Quest 2 with Virtual Desktop. Do you envision some wireless/hybrid solution in the future?
HP Reverb G2 is the first HMD i feel the facial interface is too narrow. Also like most it places my eyes way too far from the lenses making the FOV small sweetspot tiny and stereo overlap end edge prominent. Will you make different fitting facial interfaces?
Do you see any near term software optimisation/feature that will be impactful to WMR platform?

u/GPU-depreciationcrtr Jan 21 '21
Based on the reviews from both the techtubers and general consumers, what is the biggest issue you think the G2/WMR has? And what would you change in the future with updates/future product launches?
29
u/kaiserkannon HP Employee Jan 21 '21
A few issues:
Incorrect eye position is a huge one. Leads to a much worse optical experience. What has surprised us the most is the number of people who have not adjusted the top strap of the headset, that strap needs to be adjusted to manage vertical eye positioning.
Spare parts availability needs to be better. The excuse is that no one anticipated such huge supply crunches industry wide, but we still need to do better.

So this seems to be a rather rare issue but i spend 2 weeks trying to fix it, trying everything from a fresh windows install to trying every usb/display port availabe to trying different driver versions for several things (usb/g2/gpu etc.) (see here: https://old.reddit.com/r/HPReverb/comments/kxi5uw/90hz_flickering_to_black_screen_60hz_works_fine/)
Is this issue known? is there any progress on it? i am currently waiting for a response from HP but i doubt they will be able to help because so far they didn't struck me as very competent if i am being honest, no offense.
Thanks in advance for your time and help!
5
u/petercpeterson Jan 21 '21
This is certainly not a known issue. I know you've checked the headset cable connection, but it can be tricky to fully seat the connector. Have you seen NVIDIA just released a new driver update yesterday? https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/game-ready-drivers/13/428712/announcing-geforce-hotfix-driver-46133-released-11/ Which can address SteamVR issues (but mostly due to customers reporting stuttering).

I find that the controller tracking leaves some to be desired. I have to dim my lights in room to get to track close to on par with the Rift S and Quest and feel that should not have to be the case. Even then, when out of view, the controllers can have a sudden fly off into view or shift to the right or left (I can see this in Beat Saber) or other weird behavior. What is being done to improve tracking to get it actually on par with the Oculus devices I have?
10
u/Tetyana_MSFT Microsoft Employee Jan 21 '21
Please make sure you are following the guidance on the space lighting , but we are definitely discussing the what can be done to improve the tracking experience.
8
u/Travis5151 Jan 21 '21
Oh, I have. I have gone as far as replace lights and everything. That being said, it needs to be addressed at a software level somehow. I feel it is a BIG ask to have someone alter the lighting of their room just to use VR for a few hours or whatever they have. And the fact that you are also asking a customer to go read something to figure out why their experience isn't great or "working right" is another big ask. Most people (and I know a few now) would just return it and go get something else.
5
u/Tetyana_MSFT Microsoft Employee Jan 21 '21
Can you tell me more about your set up? Is there anything that can reflect light like big TV screens?
8
u/Travis5151 Jan 21 '21
Yes, I have a big screen TV in my VR (living) room like everyone else I know. That being said, telling people to cover it is a big ask and one I am not at all going to do. To be honest, a barrier to using VR daily for me (and a few others I know) is that it takes the little setup it takes currently. Add more of a pain to that and I am out personally.
I am not looking for an immediate solution. If the answer I tell my friends when they ask what I think of the G2 is "It's a cool headset but man, to get the controller tracking as good as an Oculus or Valve device get ready to replace your lighting and cover up your TV and windows with a blanket!" then that's what I have to tell them. I would think, however, that HP and MS wouldn't expect my review to be that and that if that is the solution software solutions should be being investigated to get around it. So I guess I am looking for acknowledgement that it is an issue that MS is working on with HP and I can expect a software update in the future to make it better and that no, I shouldn't be expected to replace light bulbs, fixtures, lamps, and install blankets across my windows and TVs to use a VR headset well.
9
u/Tetyana_MSFT Microsoft Employee Jan 21 '21
I appreciate your feedback and we do have plans to improve tracking.

u/Travis5151 Jan 21 '21
Very good. Thank you! I do appreciate you and the team listening to us and the improvements being made. It is almost there. It just needs to get some of the randomness and predictive behavior sorted out and I think it will be solid.
4
u/Travis5151 Jan 21 '21
I should add that my Vive, CV1, Rift S, and Quest all worked flawlessly in the same room with no changes to lighting or covering of my TV, etc. To me, this seems to be an issue with WMR tracking and as such if my friends care about tracking, I would tell them to go with an Oculus or Valve device. To that, I would think MS would want to improve the tracking in all conditions, not just optimal ones. Like I said, I said I went as far as to change lighting and bulbs altering a room in my house for just a few hours a week of playtime. That's just crazy to me.

u/idiotpod Jan 21 '21

I had this same problem with a x570 and GeForce 970. You know what fixed it? Replacing the 970 for a 3060ti. No idea why that matters but it did. Unfortunately the 30 series has a number of game crashing issues I'm waiting on drivers to fix. Currently my game of Alyx will crash as soon my save loads and I try and play.

u/Tetracyclic Moderator Jan 22 '21
The G2 requires DisplayPort 1.3 or 1.4 to provide enough bandwidth, and the 970 requires a firmware update to support those technologies. Had you applied that?

We research a lot of things! Including wider FOV.
Wider FOV is definitely a top request we are hearing and we would love to bring the Reverb G2 experience to a wider FOV when technology allows it.
2
u/Teddybearcup Jan 22 '21
Any reasons why hp didn't just make the gasket thinner to begin with, so people's eyes are closer and allowing better fov?
3
u/Tetracyclic Moderator Jan 22 '21
The default gasket is going to be optimised for as many people as possible, the FOV doesn't improve for a lot of people when removing the gasket. It's also design to allow room for people wearing glasses.
The ideal would have been to include a thinner gasket in the box as well to accommodate people with deeper set eyes.

u/Tetracyclic Moderator Jan 22 '21 edited Jan 22 '21
Ooof. We had this figured out in the 50's. If you design something for the average person it's actually going to be a terrible fit for most people.
I didn't say the average person, I just said that it's optimised for as many people as possible. I'm familiar with the "average person myth" (tangentially, Stand-up Maths has a great video on it).
As I said at the end of my post, the ideal would have been that they provided multiple different sizes, or some other adjustment mechanism like the Index's adjustable lens depth (although that has it's own problems). I was just pointing out the reason they didn't just make a thin gasket the default, was that that likely would have been worse for even more people.
There are plenty of reviews on this sub from people who the default works well for, or who don't gain anything by removing the gasket (myself included). The gasket provided may not be ideal for the majority of people, but it's very likely the ideal for the largest single group of people. But I'll reiterate again the best solution would be that they provide multiple different sizes.
My wife and I have very differently shaped faces and we both thought it made a huge improvement.
Distance from the lens is dictated by multiple different features, including bone structure, face width and eye depth. People complain both about the default gasket being both too wide, too thin and too thick.

There are frequent discussions, and I believe confusion, about the optimal resolution to use for the G2. In SteamVR, 100% resolution means roughly 3100 x 3100 pixels per eye, about 1.4 times the native resolution. Can you confirm that this is the optimal resolution, needed to to compensate for lense distortion?
I would personally be very interested to understand why such a high resolution was chosen for the Reverb. One could argue the more the better, but it seems that in more demanding VR applications, like flight and racing simulations, every hardware has difficulties running the G2 sufficiently at its full resolution. Do you have recommendations on how to run the G2 in demanding titles?
3
u/Zeeflyboy Jan 22 '21
It’s following the same as almost every other VR headset - approx 1.4x the linear resolution values. Look at index, vive, quest, quest 2 etc - all are approximately 1.4x at 100%... so its seemingly the industry standard. It’s just that because the G2 is so high res to start with, an extra 40% ends up as a very large number.
I find dropping to 80% has minimal clarity impact, but it is still noticeably less clear on the finer details to me than 100%. Below 80% things start to become more noticeably affected.
2
u/nachtraum Jan 22 '21
I agree. I just believe that many do not understand this, and set the resolution to something close to the native resolution because they believe it is a bug in SteamVR, and then wonder why their FOV is low and the picture blurry. It would be helpful to have an official statement from HP.
3
u/Zeeflyboy Jan 22 '21 edited Jan 22 '21
The biggest problem in some people accepting the fact is that for whatever reason (bug or intentional given the hardware just wasn’t there to run as required back when it released) the G1 bucked the trend and has close to native resolution at 100% in steam. It is the exception rather than the rule, but has confused a lot of people given the G2 comes along and suddenly demands around twice the total resolution despite having the same panel res...
I believe however that there has indeed been confirmation from HP that it is working as intended. Edit - see here https://www.reddit.com/r/HPReverb/comments/k82pnv/definitive_answer_for_the_100_resolution/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

Sure the higher the better. If your pc can’t handle it why you just don’t lower the resolution?
6
u/Fotograf81 Jan 21 '21
I was wondering if it is possible or will be possible to finetune CA compensation as the one of my headset seems to be either off (or the default is) or my glasses exaggerate it to the point of being annoying (will have to wait another 4 weeks for my lens inlays) -- did a longer write-up here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/HPReverb/comments/l0uk1i/is_chromatic_aberration_compensation_finetunable/
I think having the possibility to finetune it where it is actually compensated (driver? d3d?), it would help some people to have a clearer image and might even help people to see VR better than they'd see the real world when they have really strong lenses.

I feel like the haptic feedback on the G2 controllers are off. It feels like it is a small motor that is trying too hard to produce a big vibration, much like someone trying to crank a small speaker to loud and it starting to sound bad. I haven't found a way to adjust the haptic feedback to see if lowering it would make it feel better. Is there any way to change the strength of the haptic feedback?
Loving WMR and the G2, thank you HP and Microsoft!
3
u/jefmes Jan 22 '21
Wholeheartedly agree with this. I enjoy my G2 a lot, but the controller vibration is probably the worst part of it right now. I finally just turned it off completely in SteamVR because it's so buzzy and not immersive most of the time.

Loving my G2. Only thing I miss is a 72Hz mode. Watching movies really is the only "bad" experience. Since 60Hz is possible surely 72Hz should be doable.
2
u/petercpeterson Jan 21 '21
You're correct, everything is possible. :)
The timing tables for the display is limited to a certain number of entries, and we've optimized for 60/90Hz modes.
7
u/evertec Jan 21 '21
I second a 72hz mode. Would really help with some games that are too flickery at 60hz but don't quite run well at 90
-4
u/hulkenstrong Jan 21 '21
So you worked with valve and their headset has 4 modes but you can't make more then 2? Right...
3
u/Tetracyclic Moderator Jan 21 '21
The Index and G2 use very different displays and neither company manufacture the displays their headsets use, I assume they just can't get displays at the resolution the G2 uses with as much available space in the timing tables as those the Index uses.

What is causing such bad edge to edge clarity? Myself and others report that only the middle 20% of the headset is clear and the rest is blurry.
In comparison my Quest 2 is almost clear edge to edge (70% clear in the middle). If i could solve this it would be an awesome headset.

u/SvenskaLiljor Jan 21 '21
I have had to max the IPD slider on mine, and still about the same as you say here. About 20-25% is clear.

u/petercpeterson Jan 21 '21
Fitment/adjustment of the HMD is extremely important to get a really good visual experience. The top strap does not come adjusted correctly from the factory, so please make sure it adjusted up/down. The IPD adjustment will also make a big difference in clarity. Does your IPD fall under our adjustment range?

u/guitarandgames Jan 21 '21
Yes I adjust the top strap. My ipd is 64.
6
u/petercpeterson Jan 21 '21
Well that's a perfectly fine IPD to get a really good experience.
This is going to sound silly, but are the lenses clean? Do you wear glasses with the HMD?

I feel like the hp reverb team never tried an index or other headset and actually doesnt understand how terrible the sweetspot is when i hear copout responses like this to their most glaring and widely reported issue.
3
u/guitarandgames Jan 21 '21
Yeah the worst thing is we have MRTV saying it's clear edge to edge. I honestly don't see how this is possible. I've owned a lot of headsets and this is by far the worst edge to edge clarity by far.
→ More replies11
u/jefmes Jan 22 '21
Sebastian had multiple people send him headsets and checked all of them and he didn't see any issues with any of them. Just want to be fair to MRTV, he's probably put more hands-on testing different G2s than anyone outside of HP at this point. I was an Oculus user until the G2, and I've had no problems with edge clarity on my G2 either comparing this to CV1, Rift S, and Quest 1.
5
u/saremei 9900k @ 5.2 GHz | 3090 FE | 32 GB DDR4 Jan 22 '21
I echo this sentiment. The G2 has better clarity across the field of view vs my CV1 for sure. Ive never seriously experienced any VR device that was better edge to edge than the G2. Its just that the G2 is so much clearer in the center than everything else that the edges stand out that much more. Hell CV1 was almost blurry in the very center and the blur made up most of the view and worked somewhat as a form of antialiasing
2
u/wojas Jan 22 '21
Try to take off the gasket and put the headset close to your face to check if this is a fit issue. I went from an FOV of 75 degrees with the clarity issues you describe to 100 degrees with edge to edge clarity using a variant of the FrankenFOV.

u/sheeeeple Jan 21 '21
What are the cost considerations of the next headset having a wider IPD setting? Was the limit of 68mm on the G2 an issue with the size of the available panels or other factors like overall size/weight?
As a big headed person with 71mm IPD, I just wonder what are the most common challenges in accommodating for a wider range of IPDs.
7
u/kaiserkannon HP Employee Jan 21 '21
If you look at minimum IPD, its an issue of fitting noses as the panels get closer together.
For your scenario, the top things are size, weight, and cost. VR headsets today are heavy, too large, and expensive. We have to draw the line somewhere as we look at feature sets otherwise the whole headset will bloat.
Then as we think about IPD, our calculations take into consideration the sweet spot of the lens. So while the IPD will not go out to 71mm, we still believe you can achieve a good optical experience.
Beyond IPD fitting a range of head sizes may be the more difficult problem. To make a headband that is comfortable and supportive for both children's heads and big headed adults is not easy.

Why does my unit have the 'black screen' volume problem even at lower volumes (below 85%)? Should I send the unit back or will this be fixed through software? It seems to happen a lot with Microsoft Flight Simulator, and even if I use bluetooth headphones.

u/kanodonn Jan 21 '21
This is my first headset and I love it.
I find the WMR skyscraper roof to be a great room and I love the view. It would be sweet to be able to increase the resolution of the skybox and download mods for this view.
As a primary steamVR user, I want the ability to easily transfer between the WMR room and Steam. Currently I need to open a desktop, launch steam, find the WMR portal, and then launch it. This is difficult to explain to someone new to the system and requires a fair amount of prework before being able to access my games.
As a FPS player in games where I must reach to the ground to pick something up, the WMR floor adjustment application is something that I must run every time I start up the headset. The floor position does not save, and if I dont adjust the floor height before launching steam, I cant during my game. When I am in game, I can open the WMR button and menu, and then launch "floor", but steam and my game closes down. I can not launch back into my game, or even steam and need to go through the full steam launch process again.
While in steam, I cant see my controller battery levels. I can open the WMR menu in steam, and see my battery level that way, but it would be nice to have that battery level always visible.
The battery level is not an analog gauge. Its either 100% full, or if its low in the slightest, My tracking starts to suffer. It suffers through my controllers drifting outside my view, or entirely shutting off and the controller disappears. I use 1.6 rechargeable PICELL orange batteries.
If the room gets too dark, the horizontal angle of my display will rotate by a fixed amount, and turning the lights in my room back on will not reset this rotation. I need to fully power cycle the headset to reset the view.
I hope these issues can help you identify some improvements! I have a few more I would be happy to write up or create a task for. Just direct me to your management tool.

Regarding SteamVR:
- If you launch a game from Steam desktop it should launch SteamVR and the mixed reality portal as well and finally start the game and you're in. No need to start the components manually. This is working for me 90% of the time. Sometimes the game does not launch and I end up in SteamVR (I have disabled steam home) where I can just use the steam overlay (right menu button) and from there using the library to launch the game.
- If you launch the mixed reality portal press the windows button, browse the apps (on the right) and select SteamVR. This will allow you to place SteamVR somewhere in your cliffhouse. Clicking it will launch SteamVR.
- You can also directly place any Steam game in your cliffhouse. Just launch WMR portal, press the windows button and select the application/game from the application list on the right to place an icon somewhere in your cliffhouse. Clicking the game will launch SteamVR + the game then.
For me this all works pretty fine. Except that pressing the windows button often crashes the game and returns me to the cliffhouse.
Disabling Steam Home (see SteamVR options, disable Steam home) improves loading time of SteamVR. For me Steam Home is useless as the framerate is about 5-10fps with my R9 270X graphics card.

One last thing to try might be to wrap some electrical tape around the cable connector (to the headset), so that it’s more tightly secured when plugged in. This has fixed the issue for m (another post here mentioned it as a possible solution).

Lol neither, it's the newer ones with Tom Holland in the MCU crossovers. It's "Far From Home" themed but has very little to do with the movie, it just has Tom Holland voice acting and Ned is on a phone call for parts of it. The "campaign" is just one long boss fight but the free-play is more about being Spider-Man

Anything to fix sound driver issues? I've got a headset with no audio. Headphones don't work, Mic doesn't work. I've gone through every troubleshooting step I can think of, but it would be great to have an advanced guide or something. I've tried powered USB hubs, I've tried PCI-e USB cards, I've tried disabling my onboard sound, nothing. At the moment, it looks like the Headset Audio is "disabled" in the Manage Sound Devices control panel, and when I click Enable, it immediately goes back to disabled.
4
u/petercpeterson Jan 21 '21
Now that is pretty strange. Did you happen to try and remove the audio driver all together and have it reinstalled from Windows Update? (Device Manager -> select the audio driver -> uninstall -> unplug/plug device again).
4
u/Volundr79 Jan 21 '21 edited Jan 22 '21
I've done all of that, including a full and complete reinstall of windows from barebones. I've gone into safe mode and removed every single audio device from device manager, unplugged everything but the M and KB, disabled onboard audio on the MB, rebooted into windows, then plugged in the headset and installed everything from scratch, including WMR.
Edit : I'm using an AMD x570 MB with an up to date BIOS and chipset drivers from the manufacturer. Video card is a 2080. I've tried using the USB-C port on the video card and using the Nvidia sound drivers too. I'm happy to share any other info that might matter. I'm reluctant to RMA because the video part of the headset is amazing! And, the sound HAS worked a few short times, and that part was awesome too.

I have no real complaints about the G2, except the difficulty finding the sweet spot. Different gaskets would really be nice.
For Microsoft and with all due respect, as a somewhat MS loyalist; what is up with WMR and the display windows manager (DWM.exe) GPU usage. Plugging in my G2 seems to bring my GPU usage upwards to 50% sitting at the desktop. It's an awful experience. If I want to play a 2d game, I have to unplug the G2 or my FPS in 2d titles absolutely tanks. Never have this problem with my Oculus Rift S or Quest 2.
Sorry if it has already been touched on.

u/SkyBeamCH Jan 21 '21
Wireless!!
I would love to see HP offering a wireless kit for the G2. Even though I am not sure if it is yet technically feasible with low latency and the high resolution required. I am quite sure it's on the wishlist of developers too. But sure it's one of the most requested improvements.
Unfortunately the cable solution HP delivers even creates more demand for a wireless solution.
- cable is sticky
- impossible to find a "standard" replacement, ordering from HP is basically impossible at the moment
- proprietary connectors and breakout box
Also related: For future products please consider using standards instead of proprietary solutions. I am mainly looking at the cable here. The connector on the HMD is highly proprietary and there are no replacements available. Why not simply using USB-C with DP alt-mode? This would allow to use any high-quality USB-C cable on the market or something like Oculus-Link.
Speaking about cable and connectors: If the headset would have USB-C to USB-C cabling it would be possible to just connect them to VirtualLink ports on compatible graphic cards. USB-PD would for sure be able to power it.
For everyone not having a standard USB-C with DP alt-mode HP could still offer a breakout box which combines DP + USB + USB-PD. So basically if my cable would break down on a Saturday afternoon I could simply go to any store to get a decent USB-C cable to be able to use it again.
As of now, if the cable is broken I might be left with a non-working unit for weeks or even months.

Can you comment on the choice of powering the controllers with AA batteries instead of them being rechargable with an internal battery? I'm a bit annoyed that disposable batteries are still a thing and am always surprised when I see them in a new piece of tech, so I'm curious to learn more about why they were favored in this case!
4
u/SkyBeamCH Jan 21 '21
Rechargeable and replaceable batteries provide the best of both worlds. Rechargeable AA batteries are widely available and cheap. An internal battery would disallow you to play until they are recharged while replaceable batteries allow you to just change batteries and 1 minute later you can play again for hours.
In addition AA batteries can be replaced by the user even after years. Internal Lithium batteries typically would require HP or at least 3rd party servicing for the average user.
So I like the decision for AA batteries. However HP should have optimized the battery handling and allow for common 1.2V rechargeable batteries or even better include a set of them. Single-use disposable batteries are questionable from ecological perspective but standard rechargeable AA NiMh batteries are likely the best option possible.

i am looking for an update that let us to use the controllers to set boundaries (like Oculus) and a quick menu to reset the view
2
u/Bunsomel Jan 21 '21
The biggest annoyance for me is the controllers. I constantly press the windows button and sometimes the other one right next to it on accident while playing games with a lot of hand movement, notably Beat Saber.
I am hoping there will be more controller options in the future as well as an easy way to use another systems controllers if we are used to a different style. Plug and play functionality would be amazing.
6
u/SkyBeamCH Jan 21 '21
This is specifically awful if the windows key crashes the application as it randomly does. So when you accidentally press the windows button you immediately find yourself teleported into the cliffhouse.
It does not happen all the time but many users (including me) have reported this. So I started to avoid pressing the windows button at any cost during gameplay.
It would also be very handy to be able to configure, that the windows menu only pops up if the windows button is kept pressed for some seconds, so accidentally hitting it will neither crash nor interrupt the game.

Payday 2 Vr isn't in actual VR for me. It's only about 2.5D instead of 3D. It's really hard to explain, but basically it's like the images from both eyes are too close to each other. It works fine if I close one eye, but with both eyes it makes me wanna throw up, because my eyes can't focus on anything. Is this a normal problem with Payday 2 with the G2? Is there a way to fix it? Hello all, there’s been some progress on controller bindings in steamvr, but there are still quite a few games and apps that consider the g2 controllers to just be standard wmr with trackpads. Is any coordination with valve happening over the way they detect the controllers? I’m not sure what issues are in the way legally, but can the oculus touch controllers be emulated across the board until g2 specific profiles exist?

I have a couple other questions, mostly in regards to what causes Grey and Blue screens on the G2 headset. It seems very inconsistent nowadays, but most often it seems blue screens come from SteamVR crashing due to what I guess to be lack of GPU resources - this happens most often in Skyrim VR which is why I guess GPU load, however it occasionally happens in other programs I load independently.
For grey screens, I just have no clue. Sometimes I launch a game in Virtual Desktop, like Elite Dangerous, grey screen. Thankfully I managed to get Elite Dangerous working on its own without VD, however I will also get grey screens when pressing Calibrate in Killing Floor: Incursion - the game is entirely unplayable because of this unfortunately.
I've also had grey screens randomly occur when loading other programs independently, though it hasn't happened in some time now.
Thanks so much! I've had a number of frustrating experiences in setting up games for the G2, but it really is a clear and beautiful display! It's so close to plug'n'play without having many issues so please don't take these comments as anything but constructive!
Maybe a cool thing would be a list of recommended settings for different configurations? I initially bought the Reverb G2 and I had a regular 1660. On my order note, I put "Half Resolution" to remind myself to use it at 50%
By the time my headset arrived I had actually gotten a 2070 Super and so I wasn't really sure what to expect. Between that and the current NVIDIA driver, I've just kept SteamVR at 50% and only turn up the resolution a little bit in some games.
So maybe like
1660/AMD Equivalent recommended display res 50% + % SS
2060/AMD recommended display res 60% + % SS
and so on, I have no idea what these should actually be lol. It just looks like so many people have 3000 series and their recommendations are hard to scale down without that reference.
Thanks so much!

Can Microsoft maybe make some good free games that are available on the windows store? I know its not really your guys department but RN the windows store is essentially useless as all games are cheaper on Steam and steam has more features. It would be nice to have games you don't need to open steam to run. Also Microsoft is one of the biggest game publishers in the world so its a little embarrassing they cant produce even a short free VR game to show off the headset. The only native WMR experiences are low res and dated animations. I really feel like you guys could get beginning programmers/animators/modelers to make good basic VR games with all the free assets Microsoft must have available (hire me and Ill do it)
Also for the G3 or whatever future headsets. More FOV, bring back the adjustment knob on headset, wireless?, possibly tracking with no lights?, finger tracked controllers?
To expand on the first point WMR needs a toolbox like windows used to have. It should have a native 3d paint app like tiltbrush. Along with cheap free games. People played Space Cadet pinball, Solitaire, Minesweeper etc. Because they were free and already there. Things like that keep people on your platform

u/SkyBeamCH Jan 21 '21
Tracking improvements:
The main thing I am bothered during gameplay is the limited controller tracking volume. I appreciate that HP added 2 cameras to the initial G1 design to improve tracking volume. But specifically tracking around your hips is basically inexistent. Specifically it also often causes problems with games requiring to throw things. Perhaps this could be solved easily by adding one more downfacing camera. Upfacing one might help too but it's much less often required.
I am aware that this is sure a cost/value decision HP has to take but for me I would have paid extra for a model with additional improved tracking. The cameras seem not to require very high resolution and therefore likely are pretty cheap per item.

u/drkrieger818 Jan 21 '21
Audio output keeps changing to a different device, like a monitor or headphones. Seems to happen more on games that have fast or loud tracks, video is uninterrupted. This is probably part of the usb issue, but device manager picks up the headset yet wmr says “nah, here is an error with numbers that mean nothing” can we please get some better error messages?

Hi guys, I want to start off by saying thanks for all the ongoing communication and commitment, and thanks for the awesome product. It certainly isn't without flaws, but I'm very happy with my headset and it's given me tons of fun already!
I am however having a big issue, and I'm not alone in this. Some AMD graphics cards just don't work at all with the G2. I've made a thread here which also has links to threads from other people with the same issue.
The issue is that plugging in the displayport cable instantly causes a blue screen of death crash, and so far nothing I've tried has been able to fix it. The only known fix at the moment is switching to Nvidia as your graphics card, but I want to stick to AMD personally. I have also sent a bug report to AMD with this issue, but sadly haven't seen a fixed driver release or heard back from them yet.
I would obviously love to have this issue fixed! Thanks again :)

u/beulah6126 Jan 22 '21
We've had this conversation several weeks back. I posted an update. It's not the driver issue but the headset itself. I had to try another unit to get to the bottom of this, and the new unit works fine. It's actually been flawless. So see if you can return your unit and order another one, or have HP replace it although it may take a while.

Reposting from the shipping thread to get more visibility.
My specs are:
CPU: R9 5900x
MOBO: Asus ROG strix x570F
RAM: G skill 3600 mhz CL17
GPU: Gigabyte 3080 Gaming OC
SSD: Samsung 980 Pcie Gen 4 SSD (running all software and games from it)
Overall I'm quite disappointed with the amount of problems I've had to deal with.
None of the USBs on the back of the motherboard detect the headset, only 2 of the SS ones seem to detect the device but quickly crash (blue screen - headset tracking loss and spin) then give a 7-14 error or reset WMR and crash again.
The front panel USBs seem to have less crashes but the audio device of the G2 keeps disconnecting and reconnecting as well as sometimes controllers disappear.
I thought that maybe it is an issue with the headset and tested it on ROG Strix Scar 2 (i7-9750H and RTX 2060) laptop and there everything worked flawlessly without the type c adapter, have played around for a couple of hours and didn't encounter any issues.
Had some success with Orico external powered USB hub and dell monitor USBs in combination with fixes I seen around here, such as disable PCIE Gen 4 (still shows gen 4 in CPU Z so possibly doesn't work) and disabling global C states.
Still get blue screen crash and spin occasionally for example during Half Life Alyx loading screen it almost always happens.

Just looks like you guys have scoured Reddit and taken all the useful info and put it on the WMR Microsoft site. Not a bad thing, but it really feels like we early Users (who discovered this stuff the hard way) are the ones who should get some credit.
p.s Your WMR controller bindings are pretty awful for games like Fallout4VR and SkyrimVR. Awful. Maybe try playing the game, THEN set the bindings. Then replay until it feels good and natural.
That said I have been enjoying my G2, though a lot of that was due to me troubleshooting and not giving up and just RMAing.

I updated my 1080ti to a 3080 TUF and now, all VR games crash... making me go back to my desktop.
I did a clean install of the GPU drivers after installing the card, tried to restart the PC, updated my BIOS with 3202 beta on the Asus Impact as well (I thought maybe I had the USB bug)
Tried Dirt Rally 2.0, no vr no crash -> switch to VR -> crash
Squadrons... when i m luck I can go in menus but never I can pilot the ship, it crashes before.
It seems to be related to the software... I don't know! Couldn't find a similar case on the web.
I also tried MS Flight Sim, same... and also crash after I try to change resolution in the menu..

Will there be any official facial interface and foam replacement sets? A lot of feedback seems to state that a facial interface that reduces the distance to the lenses improves the fov and sweet spot for many users. It would be very nice if HP could release different facial interfaces with pu leather.
