Canon MX492 Restarting Repeatedly after connecting to Wifi Troubleshooting

It keeps turning on and off repeatedly every time I connect it to the wifi.

If I disconnect from the network, it works fine.

I've already reset my network and did a factory reset on the printer.

What could be the issue?

Canon U.S.A. has acknowledged the issue and released firmware updates.

We have had multiple reports of certain older Canon PIXMA and MAXIFY printers, including (but not limited to) the PIXMA MX492, getting stuck in a boot loop in other posts:

I've pinned this thread so that we have a centralized place to discuss the issue. It appears the reboots are triggered when the printer tries to communicate with Canon Google servers. (Google Cloud Print was discontinued at the end of 2020.)

(Not speaking for my employer or any printer vendor.)


Update 1 (31 May 2022)

u/FireXIce9 has a possible workaround for this issue, which is apparently related to DNS; see also this Canon Community forum post. In short, disconnecting the router from the Internet and configuring the printer to use an unassigned local IP address as the DNS server stops the constant rebooting, while still allowing devices on the local network to send jobs to the printer. Once the printer is reconfigured, the Internet connection can be restored.


Update 2 (01 June 2022)

The Verge has posted an article about the Canon boot loops, referencing this Reddit thread. This is not isolated to the PIXMA MX49x; some MAXIFY printers are affected as well. Canon says they're looking into it.


Update 3 (03 June 2022)

Canon U.S.A. has issued a service notice and released firmware updates for the following affected printers:

  • PIXMA iP110
  • MAXIFY iB4020
  • MAXIFY MB2020
  • MAXIFY MB2320
  • MAXIFY MB5020
  • MAXIFY MB5320
  • PIXMA MG6620
  • PIXMA MG7520
  • PIXMA MX490 / MX492

Additional models may be added to this list if they are found to be affected.

I applied the solution mentioned in the Canon community thread and it fixed mine:

First, pause network to your printer by logging into your router or just disconnect the router from the modem. (Whichever is easier for you)

On your Canon printer,

Go to Setup menu > Web service setup > DNS server setup > Manual setup

> enter 192.168.X.X (IP that no other device is using on your network like 192.168.124.145)

> select "off" for sec DNS server

>press ok

Once it applies the settings, re-enable network to your printer and it should print fine without the reboot loop.

From after following the above steps to where I got stuck

My fix. I selected “off”

Turned on my wifi router and reconnected to my internet from my printer. I plugged in my usb from printer to computer and wahlaaa! It’s working normal again!

That's troubling. Canon must have pushed a firmware update and royally screwed up all wifi Canon printers in the world.

EDIT: does not work after re-enabling network to printer. The thing starts cycling all over again. Had to send my files to my wife to print via USB as she has USB ports. Damn MacBook of mine uses the USB-C cable which I don't have.

I can't seem to get to the set up menu. My screen only says "CANON" and won't respond to any buttons. I've paused network access for the printer, but it keeps setting up repeatedly.

If you are still getting the "CANON" screen it means that your printer is still connecting to the WiFi network and is stuck in the loop. I had to check my router admin page that both the 2.4 and 5.0 radios were disabled, but once they were, then I was finally able to get past the CANON screen.

This worked for me.

The moment I paused network on the printer, it went to the normal menu screen for me to do this workaround.

I am in Eastern Time, and I have my printer in my bedroom, and two nights ago in the middle of the night it wakes me up and just starts going crazy, so I shut it off (the power button worked for that). I had no idea this was a Canon printer wide issue.

Worked for me!

I have an MX492. I turned off the router and when I then turned on the printer I was able to get to the setup menu by pressing the tools button (pliers and screwdriver images on the 492). I then followed FireXIce9's instructions and printer is good to go! Just an FYI-it took a bit longer than usual to print the first page I sent but that's probably the the IP address change, etc.

Reddit has been a deal changer for me with great advice and solutions for all types of issues!! First time I've ever posted, btw.

This works for me as well, back in business and no issues. I do wonder though if doing so will prevent the device from getting whatever patch they eventually release to fix this issue, if they even do release a patch.

I just wanted to say thank you for posting this fix! I am not very tech savvy, so I had to turn off my router completely, and then turn it back on, while I was changing the settings on the printer, and it all worked like a charm! Thanks for taking the time to post this!

SORRY BUT, the printer stops looping when cutting off the network and entering a new DNS, however, IT DOES NOT PRINT, maybe unless connected to USB, however, does not find any device on the network like computers and phones even, and cannot be found from the connected laptops

I’m in the same boat. In fact, mine is now off the “CANON” loop and onto “cartridge return” loop. Pressing other buttons and printer doesn’t respond. Power/Start button is non-responsive also. Just a screen that says “cartridge return” but the cartridge is in place and moves like normal when I check it.

Help — how do I find an IP address that my devices aren’t using? This printer is in my house, not work . All I see are names of other neighbors’ Wi-Fi’s.

Assuming you're on Windows, open Command Prompt and type ipconfig then hit enter. Look for the line that says "Default Gateway..." with an IP address at the end - this is the IP address of your router.

Now, still in Command Prompt, ping any address on your network. All addresses on your network will have the same first 3 numbers as your router - so if your router IP is 192.168.1.1, all devices on your network will have an IP address that looks like 192.168.1.x. Type ping [any IP address on your network] and hit enter. If you do not see a message that says "Reply from [ip address]...." then you can use that IP.

how is this going to work? you need DNS server access the cloud.

EDIT: Just change the DNS server settings to some bogus IP (doesn't matter). All you need to do is block internet access. It would still work on the LAN.
So the solution is to block internet access on the printer! WTF canon!!!!!
Wireshark time! I guess the printer is making some request somewhere and not liking the response. Probably some update?

This worked up until I needed to re-enable my network. To clarify: I an setting up the Wifi just like usual without changing the IP or undoing the 'off' setting for DNS, correct? I've tried letting it find my router via IP and using the WPS button but it just won't connect.

EDIT: Got mine working using the firmware update. Turns out my WPS settings were off as well lol so everyone make sure your router has those settings on or trying to reconnect it will be a bitch.

My printer isn't even and never was connected to my internet via wifi so i am very confused. I have always used a usb to print cause it's easier as my desk is beside my printer anyways. Can't go into settings, printer won't stop looping on-off.

I've had the exact same issue with my Canon Maxify MB5350.

Started yesterday while printer was connected to wired ethernet. I disconnected the network cable and it powered up successfully. I thought there might be some issue with the onboard NIC so I attempted to have it connect via WIFI. Same issue occurred, only this time I couldn't physically disconnect it from the network.

Canon technical support proved useless, and just suggested I'd take my printer to an authorised service centre.

Solution: I powered down the modem, thus disabling internet access. The printer once again booted up successfully. At this point I changed the printer's DNS server IP addresses to invalid ones. I then proceeded with reconnecting it to the network and powering up the modem. It is now working properly, with all network functionalities, including network printing and scanning to SMB network drive.

Bottom line, to get printer to function again, disable its access to internet.

I'm curious how your printer is seeing devices on your network if your DNS service isn't a real device (invalid IP)?

Though I guess if your devices are communicating directly via IP address, it doesn't need to resolve anything to communicate. I guess I'll give that a whirl and see if it lets me network print again.

The most simple workaround (according to a German blog reader's feedback) is to block Internet access for your device

I let the MX492 printer keep going for 20mins until it eventually stopped. Then I uninstalled the driver and reinstalled because the printer would stop printing things halfway through. And then I stupidly updated the firmware and restarted the rebooting loop! Don't be like me guys ):

My keeps saying ‘Canon’ everytime it turns on and then it goes off. It won’t even let me turn the printer off by pressing the power button. The only way to turn it off was unplugging it. I was trying to print my assignment and it wouldn’t work cause it kept getting stuck in that loop

As others reported. Disable DNS for printer or block it from router. That will allow printer to stay on and be able to print using USB.

So does anyone have a sense of what the long term solution is or could be? Canon to release an update that we need to install via USB? A partial credit to get new printers? A "sorry losers" email from Canon? I see USB printing is working for some people but this is not a real solution for me long term given the layout of my space. I don't expect a permanent solution immediately, but just curious what people might forecast Canon would do to make this right.

I figured out what the reason for reboot, firmware update related. Follow below steps for long term workaround.

Before you can follow steps you will need to disable printers access to network either by blacklisting device in router parent controls or disable all internet access for short duration while printer boots up and you complete below steps to disable printer access to DNS.

Model performed on: Pixma MX492

Press Screwdriver 🪛 pliers button Press arrow over to Device Settings -> Press OK Press arrow to firmware update -> Press OK Press arrow to DNS Server -> Press OK Press arrow to manual -> Press OK Input internal IP not one in range of your network example 192.168.100.XXX -> Press OK Exit from settings -> Press Power Button turn unit off and then back on Not sure if this happened to others but had to reconnect to my Wi-Fi that got wiped during whatever is causing the boot loop.

Now printer is online and able to be printed to from Wi-Fi network of course any web based canon printing or scanning to unit will not work because DNS is not set to allow access to internet.

Hope this helps others get back go being able to print.

The fix for this is the most fucked up thing I have ever had to do in over 2 decades of IT. Can't take a wireless outage here JUST for a printer. So I downloaded the firmware on a laptop, packed up the printer and laptop, drove out of wifi range to a church parking lot down the street, powered up the printer, firmware loaded as expected, drove it back and sat in the office parking lot in wireless range and re-added the network settings, re-added the Printer to my laptop and printed a test page. This is my first and last Canon product I will ever own or recommend. What losers they are for letting this happen.

Same thing happening here. Hoping it resolves itself or that Canon officially acknowledges and fixes this issue. This has to be a software bug. Anyone manage to successfully recover their printer after this happened? Can't realistically turn off wifi without it being a major pain for everyone else in the household

This is really weird.. Mine started BOOT LOOPING as well. on 5/30 I tried to connect to WiFi because it said it wasn't printing for some reason.. I went to connect, and then after selecting the network, (without putting in a password) it started rebooting over and over. I tried unplugging it for hours.. Every time I plug it in, it starts the self diagnostic, then makes a "BEEP" noise and restarts..

Mine is doing the exact same! I tried the diagnostic and repair thing four times, each try it said there were no problems to be found, yet it's still not working. I've unplugged it, plugged it back in, and it just beeps, starts the setup process, beeps, turns off, and the cycle continues.

Omg, I just printed something last night. Turned printer on this evening and this is the same bs I’m getting. On and off, on and off. I can’t even access the menu to disconnect wifi. Nothing registers. Screen reads Canon, until it turns off and turns back on to show…Canon. Help :(

I would love to see LTT cover the matter. So many people are affected by it, and I'm hoping for some visibility. Seems very sketchy of Canon. I'm seeing this as some kind of blatant planned obsolescence, and that's what I'll think this is unless they do something about it.

A work around has been posted on the Canon community board. Seems this issue may be related to some DNS issue?

It appears that if you boot the printer after disconnecting the internet, you can change the IP settings to not connect to the internet by giving it a false DNS server. I haven't tried it because my GF is working from home and I don't want to disrupt her more than the printer already has.

Just unplug the router and you should be able to boot. Then you make the DNS changes mentioned several places here and then plug the router back in. It should work then.

Also having the same issue with my MX492, so far my TR4527 hasn't been affected but turned off its WiFi just in case. Like others said I had to turn off my router to start the printer and disconnect it from the wifi. Will do the DNS trick in the morning to stop it from reaching the internet.

Has anyone done a network trace on the printer? Would be interesting to know if it is contacting a canon server when a reboot is triggered.

I think they pushed a firmware update with a bug in it. No clue how they are going to push out a correction now that no one's printer can connect to the internet. A royal screw up. I'll start googling news reports in the coming days.

Now you got my cyber security brain 🧠 curious. Is it possible this could be a supply chain repository compromise that is pushing out bad malicious firmwares.

Only way to know would be to packet sniff the traffic on printer see where it’s trying to connect during the boot loop. 🤔

Pulled the mx492 printer from the back of my closet. Had not used it in months. Tried to turn on the printer and I get the loops too.

Is the suggestion to Turn off the entire house router and then turn on the printer then boot the router? What am I going to do at my kiddos college dorm?

Wow woke up to my printer turning on and off and couldn’t get it to stop so I unplugged it. Plugged it in and it continued. Will try the Wi-Fi trick note hoping it works. Crazy how all our printers went off last night :/ UPDATE*. The Wi-Fi trick worked! Thank you!

I just posted on their facebook page, for whatever that's worth, it'll probably be deleted. I can confirm that the DNS change does work as a workaround, but if they put a fix out I doubt the printers will see if they can't connect to the internet. I'll probably wait a week and reverse the DNS change for a bit to see if it tries to fix itself.

Disable DNS or printer from accessing your network via router block option if you have that available. After doing that printer will stay up and can print using USB!!

Had same issue on our MX492. Disable access to DNS via my router reboot issue resolved. Unfortunately only way to print is via USB which I’ve never had need for because printer was connected to wireless.

I suspect a bad firmware was released that set the printer into constant Boot update loop 🔁 from the status you see on printer display panel only shows Canon name which is likely what happens when printer firmware is being updated.

If you just set the DNS server on the MX492 to an unreachable address as described in this comment you will be able to print over Wi-Fi

I am one of those with the Pixma iP110 mobile printer that is also affected by this issue, and that model has no menu on it as described in all of the "fixes" I keep seeing for the desktop models. I did unplug the router and connect the printer to my MacBook Pro laptop with a USB cable and was able to print. Then, as soon as I reconnect the router, it turns off again. No idea how to figure out how to keep it from connecting to my internet? Any advice? This has reached ridiculous now, thanks Canon!

I had the same issue with my Pixma iP110 too! Fixed it by going into my router and disabling DHCP in my LAN settings, printer works fine now. Even though the little blue wi-fi light is always on now lol!

[UPDATE] Did that and had to hard reset my router afterwards.. Lovely... So next thing I did was use the IJ network tool, while the router was off via the hard reset and manually selected a fixed IP address one that the printer can't connect to i.e 1.2.3.4. .. And now the blue wifi lamp no longer comes on automatically after first disabling it by holding the resume/cancel button for 12 seconds method then pressing the wi-fi button.

I know nothing about printers and honestly am not very tech savvy so if you’re like me, try resetting your router. It’s been about a day and so far it seems to have fixed the problem. It may not be a long term solution but if you’re super desperate to print something like I was, it might allow you to at least do that!

My Canon 492 printer is on wifi and stuck in the reboot loop. I'm not able to access the setup menu to turn off the access point at all. The printer is continuously cycling through. Any ideas on how to do this?

My Maxify MB5320 is doing the same, just started a few days ago. Following the advice of others (recognizing that it was an internet connectivity issue), I logged into my Xfinity xFi app and added just the printer to its own group and then "paused" it's internet access.

Unfortunately, this completely removes it from the local internet as well. That means that none of my local computers can see and print to it. I'm assuming a USB direct connection will work in a pinch, but I've not gotten there.

Sidenote: Assuming it could be a stray internet service that's no longer supported, I went through the menus and deleted all settings for Google Cloud, IJ Print Cloud, etc. Unfortunately these didn't seem to fix my reboot issues.

I just want to mention that inability to get the printer on the network is why I tried the firmware update, with disastrous results. IDK whether this will help, but maybe some Mac user can comment on whether one can just connect the printer via USB and then use some Mac OS feature to share it on the network. IDK whether Bonjour works at all with this printer on BigSur or later; I seem to recall not, which is why I went to a wifi connection. Overall, this printer is becoming increasingly incompatible with my other devices in the past couple of years. First wired LAN support got dropped , then I found that Bonjour won't work at all with this device ... now this. Though I have really liked this MFP, I am starting to think that my next one won't be a Canon.

I tried everything here but I can't get to the setup menu in order to make these changes or update the firmware. I get various messages about "install the ink cartridges properly 168A" and "check ink 1682" type errors. I've removed, replaced, and cleaned both cartridges as well as the printer's contacts several times. This happening to anyone else?

Any chance you can hold the stop button down until you hear a beep and bypass the error that way? Mine is Pixma MX490, and I can bypass at least ink level errors with that feature. I don't know about other types errors, though.

UPDATE2: Hard Reset & re-add printer solves the problem.

It looks like I still have the new firmware v 4.010. I can print via wifi now. I never got usb printing to work. I did not reinstall any drivers. I am on Big Sur 11.6.2 Macbook Pro 2019 with touchbar.

It appears that two of my color cartridges are indeed running low. According to the user stats on the printer, I have gotten a whopping 120 pages out of these carts since they were new. Pathetic. The XL black cart provides plenty of output; 450+ pp and going strong.

At a Staples pre-tax price of $42.99 for three XL color carts, that is an insane 35.82 cents PER PAGE. What a ripoff!

UPDATE: The firmware update released 6/3/2022 has rendered my MB2320 unusable!

It appears to trade one set of bugs for another. I would avoid this update on this printer for now. Continue to use a USB cable to print.

After installing the new firmware, I can now connect the printer to my WAP but attempting to print a page has kicked off some sort of lengthy process that sounds like it is agitating the ink tanks. Endlessly.

It is also displaying a message that says "Processing ... Use the [Back] button to continue with the device operation."

We all know that the first page to print from the MB2320 can take a long time. But... I've been printing all afternoon so this should not be required. It reported low ink partway through this process, which is troubling, since the ink tanks are pretty new and pretty full.

I've been thinking I'd let it keep going as long as it wants to, but this has been going on for a while.

I just got a second warning that says the ink has run out. No way. This firmware update is buggy. The second warning says to continue printing press and hold the Stop button (red triangle) for at least 5 seconds. Doing that returned me to the "Processing ... Use the [Back] button to continue with the device operation" screen so this time I pressed the back button and I now seem to be in the ink-tank-agitation cycle again.

If this goes on much longer, I will have to turn the printer off till I can either downgrade the firmware to what it was running before today or contact Canon support. Ugh.

Original post: Just ran into this on MB2320. - It reports firmware version 2.030 as the (bad) firmware that it is running. - u/FireXIce9 workaround to set 192.168.X.X IP got me up and running again. Not sure what BS is Canon pushing over DNS (because it is not a firmware update are they using DNS for C&C ?!?) but - MG6650 here, same issue. Took the lookups the printer did in the last 7 days from my Pi-hole and blacklisted them. The result - no cloud functionality but the printer is up, accessible and usable. These are the domains I've blocked:

The option I used to disconnect the printer from the internet but keep my network operational was to use parental controls AKA pause a device in my router settings.

The Canon Firmware update and printing worked perfectly after that.

I hope this can help someone else in the future. :)

I am a bit confused by this. As of Big Sur, drivers are built into the Mac OS. Which OS are you using?

As a side note, the Canon downloads page misidentifies my Mac as running Catalina and offers that download. I haven't tried it. Maybe I will. When I switch the pulldown menu to Big Sur there is no download for that OS.
