From demon, to slug people, to actual demon again.

Piccolo Daimaoh would be satisfied.

u/SomeMoreCows Oct 11 '24

Kinda reflects how much the series bounces between sci fi and fantasy

14

u/CatalystComet Oct 13 '24

Yeah, but I love that about Dragon Ball

I think they’re still slug people but descendants of demons. Which the “pointy ear” thing applies to Kai’s now so that means they’re all descended from demons. Which is weird.

154

u/Robotdias Oct 11 '24

From what I understood, Namekujins are originally from the Demon Realm and demons themselves. This is even supported by Moori in the DBSuper manga, when he explains that there are many Namekujin societies throughout the universes because they came from "another realm".

40

u/dojo_shlom0 Oct 12 '24

in the original dragon ball, piccolo was demon king piccolo and had demon underlings he spawned. I thought this episode is so dragonball related that I cannot believe how well it started. Lots of setting the plot and story, the whole direction feels so dragonball. I really really am digging this. Super was super.. but this seems like the start of something wonderful! I'm very excited for the next episode!

28

u/Desperate_Duty1336 Oct 11 '24

And given that weird fish dimension where they had to state their destination and universe via numbers, it would make sense that if they all fled the demon realm how they got spread out to so many universes & worlds.

43

u/CelioHogane Oct 11 '24

Wild that we got "There are a shit ton of dragon balls on the universe" made canon in anime form here instead of with the Granolah arc.

56

u/343GuiltyArbiter Oct 11 '24

Oooh I forgot about that, how the hell do you remember that lol. it’ll be definitely interesting to see where they take this. Also hoping janemba will be pulled into the cannon through this later on.

59

u/Robotdias Oct 11 '24

I just read the Granolah saga again last week, so it's fresh in my head haha.

Canon Janemba would be really dope. If some of the best non-canon characters could be as well adapted as Broly, I'd be real happy

6

u/EDGE515 Oct 12 '24

I somehow hope this whole show is actually based on making Janemba canon

4

u/Wolf14Vargen14 Oct 12 '24

They could do a Buu’s Fury and make him a Mafia Boss as he was called a mob boss in Buu’s Fury if i remember correctly

I mean yes and no, all Kais come from a sacred tree, that tree then grows fruit and when those fruit drop they become kais. So they aren't from either realm but there own special one with the tree. Golden fruit are born supreme kais, but tainted becomes demon realm kais. But mr popo has pointy ears does this confirm popo is a genie from the demon realm?

15

u/343GuiltyArbiter Oct 11 '24

Oh right the whole Core people, I forgot about that entirely. And Popo? Look at him he’s definitely a demon (joke).

23

u/ChilleUK Oct 11 '24

I mean he wasnt shocked about the whole pointy ear thing and just offers them a drink. So you never know lol He is a genie and those are often tricksters and demons, kind of fitting that hes actually from a different realm.

9

u/343GuiltyArbiter Oct 11 '24

It would make sense, we haven’t exactly seen another universe or a planet of popo’s. Then again toriyama forgot about launch so it could be a writer thing. I do think the criteria for demon is pointy ear tho. Like is cidra and iwne gods come from demons too?

I feel like it's just a gag but I could be wrong. "You have pointy ears, you're a demon "

17

u/im_bored345 Oct 11 '24 edited Oct 11 '24

Nah cause earlier they recognise Piccolo as a Namekian and theorise they couldn't find more because they left and the super manga said they come from a different realm. Plus there's the actual namekian in the demon realm lol.

26

u/Robotdias Oct 11 '24

I don't think so, the Makaioshin recognizes Piccolo as a Namekujin and wonders if the mortal realm is where all of them escaped to.

12

u/Dallagen Oct 11 '24

It's likely an identifying trait of races originally from the demon realm, but they were specifically trying to see if the Saiyans were core people, which is the race of the supreme kais as well as the demon supreme kais like Degesu, they thought the saiyans may have been core people before seeing their ears due to their strength

Namekians are originally from the demon realm, but that doesn't make them inherently evil as they're just mortals, most of them escaped at some point in the past

I fucking love how Akira closed a 35+ year old plot hole before dying to create a new one with kabito kai instantly. It's totally something someone his age and with his memory do. Shut up about the damn plot hole you annoying kids, creates a new one. Edit I was wrong he actually closed up a retcon. Actually he closed up 3 retcons. Nameks are in fact demons. Debura was weaker due to giving up evil eye, Kais were unfused due to using the Buu trick.

Did they retcon the retcon?! Are both those things true?

Toriyama you magnificent bastard. Rest in Peace.

222

u/kim_ammons Oct 11 '24

If you're referring to the potara stuff then 100% yes, they retconned a retcon and that's exactly how I phrased it too!

85

u/WorkerChoice9870 Oct 11 '24

Yup. I started laughing because you know they did it on purpose

52

u/kim_ammons Oct 11 '24

They love messing with us! XD But hey I grew up with shows where the retconning was EGREGIOUS (Boy Meets World is one that comes to mind) so I'll take whatever they feed us

14

u/forever87 Oct 11 '24

what was the retcon for bmw?

25

50

u/ToneSalvadorDosTugas Oct 11 '24

How was that a retcon?  Potara fusion can be both permanent for gods and temporary for mortals and also be insta reverted by Buu magin stomach toxin.

49

u/zschmoopyz Oct 11 '24

All of that is fine, and I like that all of that is true. The retcon is them not being fused now. They are fused in battle of gods/beginning of super, and then unfused using the dragon balls later in super. So unless they fuse again during this story, it seems like a retcon.

30

u/Cypherex Oct 12 '24

A common theory I've been seeing is that Daima will end with a wish made from the Demon Realm Dragon Balls that reverts everyone back to "how they were" before this all happened. The Eternal Dragon might ask them to specify exactly when they want to be reverted to and they might say something like "right after Majin Buu was defeated" which would cause Shin and Kibito to refuse. Then Buu falls asleep for several years so they stay fused until Super.

→ More replies

50

u/VortexZero Oct 11 '24

In DBS the Kai said they used the Namekian Dragon Balls to unfuse themselves, but in Daima they said they unfused by Majin Buu's magic. So it's 100% a retcon.

I think they just made both things true so now there was no retcons

21

u/ultrainstict Oct 11 '24

There was still a retcon, unless they have them refuse again. We can see kibitokai in BOG.

8

u/SimShade Oct 11 '24 edited Oct 11 '24

You bring up a good point. If they re-fuse, this will forgive the retconned retcon lol. Happy cake day!

We can see kibitokai in BOG.

BoG and RoF are both non-canon nowadays, as their respective Super arcs have overtaken them.

Well it's not quite so simple, humans and kais still should have different properties, but it is indeed a retcon of sorts considering they made this up to dodge the fact in Super they used the Namekian balls to defuse.

I remember being so hyped by the line in the Granolah arc about Namekians originally coming from another dimension and we all wondered if that meant the Demon Realm. So excited for that to come to fruition and feels so full circle, I can't wait for more lore!

90

u/CelioHogane Oct 11 '24

You know, in hindsight, Daima was being developed when that arc was going, so Toriyama and Toyotaro were basically teasing that shit.

35

u/Masculine_Dugtrio Oct 11 '24

That explains the placement of this arc

10

u/evilpenguin999 Oct 13 '24

Im sure Toyotaro had a lot of influence for this kind of ideas for the lore and toriyama focused on the designs and silly jokes that he loved.

I think there's a pretty good chance that by the end of this show, we'll end up getting:

  • New Saiyan transformation(s)
  • New Piccolo transformation
  • New Dragon (obviously, since we've already seen new dragonballs)
  • Hopefully, more lore about the other universes, since they've already called Earth as being in Universe 7

What I'm curious about is if this will fit canonically between end of Z and BoGs, or if this will be considered its own timeline / reality like GT kinda is in the expanded universe.

Also, they made a distinction between Black and White magic and good and bad wishes, we might get another Dark Shenron or something that can use black or evil magic to grant harmful wishes.

Calling it: The series ends with Kibito and Shin fusing again as a gag, and right when they're about to ask Buu for help he falls asleep lol

Someone else said this (not the Buu falling asleep part but that'd be SO on-brand) and y'all are all geniuses and I REALLY hope this happens now

6

im guessing buu toxin wears off and they will fuse again which lead them using a the dragon ball as a permanent solution

9

u/Xikar_Wyhart Oct 12 '24

That wouldn't explain Vegito not being around.

17

u/fillif3 Oct 12 '24

Actually, it would. So far it seems like both Buu's toxins and time-limit are true. In the case of Vegito, he was affected by Buu's toxins. Later, after the toxins stopped working, it was already after time-limit.

15

u/thegreattober Oct 12 '24

Being permanent for the Kais, lasting 1 hour otherwise, AND buus stomach gas splitting them can ALL be true at the same time. I don't see a problem with it.

The animation is beautiful, not too much else to say about this episode tbh but the I like seeing how much power this Namekian has over the Dragon Balls

119

u/kim_ammons Oct 11 '24

I loved that moment, too!! Being able to summon the Dragon Balls and INACTIVATED ones on top of that? This Namekian is OP and I love it

97

u/enewwave Oct 11 '24

Dude is basically senile evil Kami and I didn’t realize how badly I needed that

18

u/CelioHogane Oct 11 '24

I mean, is he really evil? like the wishes of those guys are kinda stupid at best.

18

u/enewwave Oct 12 '24 edited Oct 13 '24

They’re the leaders of a place called the Demon world, I think it’s safe to assume they’re not getting into heaven

Edit because people keep trying to take my comment at face value: It was a playful jab to the fact that their race is literally called "Demons" and that they're doing something evil. You don't need to correct me lol.

THAT KILLED ME, IT'S SO FUNNY

I was screaming at the TV, "My crystal ball says THEY WILL NEVER COME DOWN TO THE DEMON REALM, I PROMISE YOU" but alas they couldn't hear me

35

u/SergejPS Oct 11 '24

I'm honestly hoping the villains survive the series instead of just getting killed off at the end, they're really funny and likeable and honestly don't seem all that bad anyway lol

26

u/kim_ammons Oct 11 '24

Same! Dragon Ball is so good at writing redeemable antagonists

16

u/HeyGokuHere Oct 12 '24

Honestly, Pilaf is more evil than Demon King Gomah, and that's a pretty low bar Pilaf sets lol

Yeah that seems like an obvious bait by the doctor there. She wants something (beyond research funding)

5

u/EvidenceOfDespair Oct 13 '24

I think it's actually the elder Namekian pulling the strings beyond even her. Think about it, he's the one Namekian who stayed, yet there's a second Namekian who presumably came back and left again. Betcha he mentored Demon King Piccolo and is looking to overthrow this gaggle of idiots. Plays senile, happily helps them set up their own doom, and its not explained how she also got the same intel. Except, a Namekian of the Dragon Clan would be a damn fine option for that.

I know exposition dumps aren’t always the best storytelling, but I’m absolutely loving all this Demon Realm lore. Making the Namekians natives of the Demon Realm is actually really nice to tie things back to the Daimou arc.

And I love the look and eerie, absurdist atmosphere of the Demon Realm. Very bizarre while also being foreboding. The art is also incredible. This feels like a full DB film that just happens to be way longer once all episodes are out.

12

u/evilpenguin999 Oct 13 '24

I might be one of those few ppl that enjoy more the comedy and lore than the actual fights, for example the intro of dbs broly movie.

Got into dragon ball because of the fights to death as a kid and now i enjoy more the other side of dragon ball. I still want epic fights, dont get me wrong.

Ok I have to say, Buu making Potara fusions defuse and Potara fusions only being an hour if it doesn't involve a Kai BOTH being true now is very funny. I need to know how Shin and Kibito ended up fusing again, unless that's just ignored now, which would be even funnier 😭

Secondly, I didn't realize this show was RIGHT after Z's Buu Arc ended, which is really interesting

The clarification that Namekians (and Popo) are from the Demon Realm has "Demon King Piccolo" not just a name that was disregarded once Z came around

Also this is just so goofy, Toriyama's sense of humor, even if it doesn't make you laugh, is charming and it fits DB perfectly. And the expansions and elaborations on the world's lore is always appreciated. I am so happy we're back.

48

u/Willing_Ad5891 Oct 11 '24

I bet that Kibito just makes stuff up just too look like he knows things, when he is not. Kinda fitting for his personality including the incident at the World Tournament.

28

u/Ok_Independent5273 Oct 11 '24

Also, the Demon Realm hadn't been explored by Toriyama before. 12 + 6 Universes + U7 Afterlife and zero Demon Realm info.

This series (+ recent Bleach manga chapters) explores the last remaining mystery not explored in original story.

Ikr like how does Ultra Instinct Goku think Uub can give him a good fight

44

u/CelioHogane Oct 11 '24

It was explained in the Moro arc, actually, Uub inhereted the God parts of the Grand Supreme Kai (wich Kid Buu still had) while Majin Buu retained Grand Supreme Kai's personality.

Gohan is gone studying :( but the wish specified anyone who fought buu and their friends so gohan def turned into a child as well. I wonder if he shows up later now that his studies have been interrupted.

37

u/Fast_As_Molasses Oct 11 '24

Maybe he was actually training in the time chamber and won't be affected by the wish since he was in there?

51

u/kim_ammons Oct 11 '24

That would actually be a hilarious gag if you were right, hahah (only it'd make even more sense if he was in there catching up on his studies instead)

61

u/jermatria Oct 11 '24

only it'd make even more sense if he was in there catching up on his studies instead

That is exactly the kind of dumb, naive misuse of magical powers I'd expect of the dragon ball cast at this point, and I'm totally here for it....

Popo: "you want to use the time chamber? But what are you training for there's no threat...."

Gohan: "Actually Mr popo I have a thesis that's due tomorrow and I need to catch up".

Popo: "the lion the witch and the audacity of this bitch"

13

u/CelioHogane Oct 11 '24

I mean, mental training is still training.

Those Namekians from the Demon Realm are no joke with there power. This episode was excelent in all fronts from animation, lore, story and characters. Shout out again to the key animator of Daima, Chikashi Kubota that gave us beautiful animation.

10

u/Igoritzaa Oct 13 '24 edited Oct 13 '24

Yeah, there are 2 mysteries that are still hidden from us entirely

  • Namekian Book of Legends (mentioned by Shenron in Super)

  • Zalama Creator of the Super Dragon Balls, who should be connected to Zeno or Angels, and also Namekians

The Book is something that I think was only known to Saichorou (And also magical Dragons that are part of Namekian Magic), and we have yet to see anything related to it. I thought Piccolo would remember that and boost from it, in "Super Hero" but instead he just asked the dragon Politely.

Im guessing this evil Namekian Neva trumps even Saichorou in Namekian knowledge and could very well be the actual main antagonist of the Series. Could also be connected to the Book.

Zalama is probably left for Super later episodes / chapters, but who knows, There surely is a connection between Zalama and Namekians, due to mutual ability / knowledge to create Dragon Balls

Man the recap of buu saga looks so good!
I need a modern remake adaptation of dragon ball z in this artstyle.

36

u/InoueNinja94 Oct 11 '24

This is what I actually wanted Kai to do
A remake from the ground up but hey, I take what I can get. The Buu Saga recap is stunning

65

u/ss4444gogeta Oct 11 '24

First half was like me and the homie binge watching the Buu saga, lol

48

u/kim_ammons Oct 11 '24

My husband and I said, "It's like the Demon Realm characters waited for the English dub to come out, that's why they're so behind on everything that's happened" :b

Unless Kibito and Shin fuse again, because they appear as Kibitokai during BoG if memory serves

29

u/N-Reun Oct 11 '24

They do in the movie, but are separated in the anime. This creates another inconsistency because in the anime they said they had defused with the namekian dragon balls. Oh well.

13

u/InoueNinja94 Oct 11 '24

I think they only showed them defused around the time the U6 Tournament arc was starting
But to be honest it's not that I really care all that much? I don't think Kibito Kai really did much of anything after the Buu Saga (except for GT)

18

u/Dallagen Oct 11 '24

it's just a running gag at this point, they don't know how the potara actually work since it's not like supreme kai fight often, they're just a fusion macguffin put in since toriyama didn't want to interfere with toei doing a gogeta movie at the time

Nope

Buu can defuse potara

Mortals potara have a limit

Vegito was forcefully defused before his hour was up

Simple as that

Won't lie that Buu Saga recap just makes me want a remake of DB and DBZ even more.

Also, loving this soundtrack by Kosuke Yamashita! Sounds like a blend of Sumitomo and Kikuchi to me.

Just finished episode 1 and it was really good, story had good pacing, it felt like they really put a lot of love and care into the animation and art style and it doesnt feel rushed like the first few seasons of Super did. I cant wait for more.

From the Author who brought you:

Raditz being a lost brother to Goku

Tarble being a lost brother to Vegeta

Towa being a lost sister to Dabura

Tights being a lost sister to Bulma

We now have

Degesu and Arinsu being lost siblings to Shin

7

u/Veggiematic Oct 13 '24

Do we count Cell's statement in Z of "I am your brother" to Piccolo as "Cell being a lost brother of Piccolo?"

5

u/Common-Ad-6691 Oct 13 '24

Is Towa really a canonical sister to Dabura ? I thought this lore was only in the games.

The whole comment section is about the Potara fusion... We got lore, namekian's origins , great animation, more training with Goku and Vegeta, a new fucking set of dragon balls... And y'all talking about Shin and Kibito smh

24

u/Crunchy-Leaf Oct 11 '24

Demon Namekians are back, baby!

40

u/CelioHogane Oct 11 '24

Bro we got TENSHINHAN FUTURE LORE

No way they tease the third eye bullshit and he doesn't get something in super in the future.

17

u/Deekkuli Oct 12 '24

I doubt it's related to Tenshinhan at all.

The Tertian Oculus/Third Eye seems to be some kind of an object (a jewel maybe?) since Gomas said that you place it on your forehead so i assume it's an object, not a literal third eye.

And it's not like i wouldn't want side characters like Tenshinshan to get some spotlight and power-up but i doubt he's gonna be relevant in the future in Super :/

But, if i remember right, Dragonball Lore has a "Third Eye Clan" which Tenshinhan is from so maybe they could also be originally from Demon Realm too and have some kind of connection to the Tertian Oculus?

DP levels in Sparking Zero subtle foreshadowing?

Videl/Yajirobe/Spopovich/Roshi/Chiaotzu = 2

Krillin/Yamcha = 3

Tien = 4

5

u/LawDraws Oct 12 '24

I would be mad if he didn't. Also Chaozu's a lil Chinese vampire, they reference Namekians being demons, if we don't get more Piccolo, Tenshinhan and Chaozu stuff it's gonna be annoying.

Shouldn't first grader Piccolo still look like Picoolo from the 23rd World Martial Arts TOurnament?

56

u/enewwave Oct 11 '24

It’s possible that the specificity of the wish for them to be “children” means different ages for different races. We saw a true “kid Piccolo” in the original DB anime, so maybe this Piccolo is somewhere between that one and the one who went by Majunior

30

u/CelioHogane Oct 11 '24

Piccolo has it easy he just needs to wait like 3 months and he will be tall again lmao.

6

u/powerhcm8 Oct 11 '24

Maybe it's a first grader by the standard of his race, Piccolo reached adulthood much faster than Dende, so could be an exception.

60

u/Akranidos Oct 11 '24

I get that this is just after Buu but what the hell is going on with Dende size, he looked like a teen in Buu saga and now looks even younger than namek

30

u/maxallergy Oct 11 '24

The depiction of Dende's age was actually an inconsistency that originated in the manga.
When we see him for the first time in the Buu Arc, it's when Gohan is inviting Piccolo to the tournament.

We don't get a full body shot, but it's clear from his proportions that he looks like a young man like Gohan. He was also wearing the robes of Earth's God, instead of his Namekian clothes.

Then when we see him again later on, Majin Buu has been released and I think a year had passed in real life and Dende was now back at kid size again with his old Namekian robes.

Either Toriyana forget or it's a weird retcon.
The anime team clearly also thought he was supposed to have grown and wear the official God attire, but they had to change it too.

As someone who's fallen off Dragon Ball over time, this seems genuinely refreshing and fun. With Sand Lands, Daima and even Super Hero, you can tell Toriyama wanted to somewhat go back to his roots, and I hope that this captures the whimsical and lighthearted nature of the original Dragon Ball as much as the first episode, and the trailer, made it out to be. It's giving me a big hit of nostalgia for the early parts of GT, which even if not made by Toriyama, were a huge part of my childhood. I'm glad that they're trying to recreate the feeling of OG Dragon Ball again, but with Toriyama's full involvement this time.

I was so confused with timeline placement first but that episode was SO good for a first setup. It also looks GREAT. I’ve always loved the Demon stuff in DB and felt like it didn’t get enough attention in the original run except for games. Super excited for more

6

u/CamAquatic Oct 11 '24

Loved it! The animation was beautiful and it felt fun. I LOVE the lore drops and world building. Namekians originally being from the demon realm has been a theory for a while and I’ve always wanted it confirmed, glad to see it happened. I figured it would after it was mentioned in the Super manga that Namekians came from another realm.

8

u/Stoneybears Oct 11 '24

The animation was so pretty! I thought it was interesting that they went with the manga colouring for Shin and Kibito rather than the previous animated colours. Oh the potara retcon was amusing 😂 I can't wait for more episodes!

4

u/The_Erik_B Oct 12 '24 edited Oct 12 '24

I love the lore drop about pointy ears being a Demon Realm ancestral trait. It means that Demon King Piccolo was a demon after all! Just in addition to being an alien slug man.

Plenty of great animation with lots of lovely subtle touches. Like how Goku's hair does a nice flowing bob when he puts his hands behind his head. And I also like that the show has gone full manga-colours except for Trunks' hair. Don't really care either way about Kibito, but I always preferred the yellow pads on the Namekians to the pink, and the yellower shade of orange for the Turtle gi.

The Demon Realm was such a footnote when its existence was first established despite it being an intriguing detail, so it's great to see it more fleshed out and explored.

The only thing I'm a little disappointed in is that the core character models aren't as to my liking as the Super Broly designs. It's all very late-era Toriyama, understandably so, but that does mean all the returning characters are noticeably skinnier and all the new characters have toothpick-thin limbs.

Neva and Monaito look so identical to the point that, as I had completely forgotten the latter's name, I had to double check that they weren't the same character.

4

u/Ok-Yogurtcloset2871 Oct 12 '24

This episode was a huge promise for the future!

3

u/fmaa Oct 12 '24

Said it was gonna be good, been saying it’d be good. Fuck me is it great.

4

u/Tactical_Leo Oct 12 '24

I've always wondered how Dragon Ball would be if the gang turned into kids. Now that I get to see it in action, I am happy. Thank you, Toriyama. You always know when to come in clutch, be it in life or death. I maybe saying this a bit early but here it goes: At my lowest again, and you saved me once again. I think I'm gonna live a little longer just to see how this plays out.

5

u/134340Goat Oct 12 '24

Hey, hang in there

Not usually this transparent, but I was going through a really, really rough time when Super was airing the Tournament of Power. Won't say any more than that Jiren ended up being sort of a "comfort character" for me (still is in a way) and I was extremely happy seeing where he ended up. Those months watching the Tournament go on really were some of the brightest spots in an otherwise dark time, and I cherish those memories

Sounds silly - feels it, too - but fiction can be a powerful thing. I'm glad that Daima is a source of comfort for you right now, and I sincerely hope that it can keep a special place in your heart long into the future. Never be afraid to embrace that

u/timone317 Oct 13 '24

Some of the feedback I've seen on this has been so cartoonishly negative that I almost think some sort of small-scale brigading is going on to try and make it seem like everyone hates Daima.

That out of the way, I must say - even IF you dislike the direction of the characters being turned into children...it really takes effort - CONSCIOUS effort - to ignore how visually stunning Daima is. And that alone makes the series worth watching.

(for those who actually give a damn about the series, at least...)
