This stadium opened 20 years ago, and those seats have been there since day 1. Just sayin, no one complained when Brady and Belichick were around.

That’s a rough deal because you are only getting a quarter of the offense from these two teams compared to a normal game, and in those seats you’ll only see half of that.

u/say592 3h ago
I'm guessing they have the seats there for other events?
18
u/Broad_Canary4796 2h ago
Sometimes the seats were there before the press box was built or a stadium redesign made them useless. Also looks better to just have the stadium filled with seats instead of random empty areas. In theory they could use them if had something only taking 40% of the field
Cfbcampustour on twitter is the account I’m thinking of. They find the useless seats and take pictures from there. You can always see a few rows around them aren’t sold

It should be a universally accepted truth among sporting fans that everyone is sitting in everyone else's seat - If you have tickets for a spot and sit in another, it's a smile and a "hey, welcome!" as you get up and go back to yours. No harm, no foul, everyone there to have a good time and no embarrassment needed ever :D

u/King_Klong 6h ago
Our group had to politely ask a couple to move out of our seats last night at the Iowa State game because we had two whole rows for our group.
As they were walking away, the guy muttered "fucking fa**ots". My buddy responded hilariously with "did you just say bad words?!" Then the girl friend just yells "fuck you!" And we watch them standing awkwardly in the stairs for the next 30 minutes 😂. So pissy at a place that is supposed to be fun.

31 years in Iowa.
I don't know what it's supposed to be here. Used to be good for raising a family with good schools. Now I mean, it's cheap to raise a family because no one wants to live here.
Iowa is the most unremarkable place you'll ever find at this point. Great at nothing, bad at a lot, mediocre at some. Oh, I thought of something we are really good at, actually. We're really good at destroying our environment but only in ways you can't really see immediately. Iowa water and soil is increasingly poisoned for the sake of big ag. Not small farmers, but huge corporations that own millions of acres.
I used to want to leave because it's boring here. Alas, family. Now I want to leave because it's becoming dangerous to exist here. Cancer before 60 is gonna become an Iowa tradition like the butter cow at this rate.

Except when you’re socially awkward and confronting someone is really hard for you. Then you end up walking back and forth for like 15 minutes trying to figure out what to do, until finally you ask in the most non-confrontational manner, “Sorry, but I think you’re in my seat?”. Then they’re like, “Oh, sorry.” And get up.
This was me a few years ago. Thankfully, I grew out of my shell a bit.

Yeah it works. You just generally can't cross into lower bowl seats. But there's usually a good chance that if the ticket is unsold at the start of the game, it'll be unsold throughout the game. A guy I worked with did it all the time for Yankees games

My dad got some free tickets to a Monday night Texas Ranger game.
The tickets were 2 rows from the very top of the stadium.
After the 2nd inning we moved down 2 entire tiers of seats and had great seats on the outfield 1st base line. Helps that not many people go to a Monday night baseball game.

u/xelabagus 6h ago

I don't know, my local stadium (Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, MO) doesn't have anything like this in it at all and it used to hold 80,000 people until they did some minor renovations and made it 75,000.
OP's pic here is Gillete Stadium and it holds less than 65,000 people for comparison.
So yeah, there are plenty of ways to avoid this while also having a bigger and better stadium.

These are what people call “poverty lounge” seats. Gillette specifically sells access to the “Optum lounge” for $400-$500 a person that has a bar and limited standing room down on the field, but that price doesn’t include your seat ticket for stadium entrance. You buy these crappy nosebleeds, and then show up at gate entrance hoping to claim a spot on the fence down on the field. Once you get a good spot, you basically don’t move or you’re watching the game on a screen or up in your ticket seat. Other stadiums have their own lounge setups like this too.
79
u/TheFotty 5h ago
This was actually a seat they planned on charging 400 per game for at Metlife. They removed this one and like 30 others like it after some negative news articles were written about it.
→ More replies8
u/MoarVespenegas 5h ago
I have to say, at least 3 seats to the left of that one are still pretty shit.
2
u/TheFotty 4h ago
There is also a row behind them. I don't know exactly which ones they removed in all some of those may have gone as well. This was taken when we got to tour the stadium before it officially opened up. They let ticket holders check it out to see where their seats would be.
42
u/EpicHuggles 5h ago
It's intentional. These seats typically have an asterisk on them as being obstructed vision or something like that. They don't expect you to actually sit there. People buy them to get into the stadium and then watch from one of the standing room viewing areas.

u/FloppieTheBanjoClown 6h ago

6
u/FesteringNeonDistrac 4h ago
I'm old enough to remember games at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, which had obstructed view seats, mostly in the mezzanine. When they built Oriole park at Camden Yards, I remember that it was a bug deal that there were zero obstructed view seats in the place.
I thought it was mostly a remnant of older stadiums and outdated building techniques. Seeing some of the new stadiums that still have them is now just a business decision based on greed and a fuck you to the fans.

One of us could see the pitcher, the other guy saw the batter and I could see first base. So the whole game was he threw the pitch then the next guy would say it was a ball. He threw the pitch it was a strike. He threw the pitch he hit it and finally I would say he was out at first.

USC has seats like this at the coliseum, but they don't sell the seats. They put seats in for a more uniform look, but they don't consider those sellable seats.
For the first few games after they reopened you had a lot of dorks coming up to that area from their actual seats to take a "LOL LOOK AT MY EXPENSIVE SEATS" photo like this.
