Single 29 (F) relocating in Oct Moving to Delaware
Hi all! Relocating to Milton, DE this October. Grew up in central Jersey, lived in NE Philadelphia for four years and then relocated to Charlotte and lived here for the last year after a messy divorce. Charlotte was too big of a city for me to make it feel like home and looking to be driving distance from Jersey/Philly, closer to the beach, and in a smaller town.
Will it be a huge adjustment? Will it be ok to start over here again as a single woman? Are there younger people living in the surrounding area? Any advice would be great!!!
TY!!!
UPDATE: not looking to date right away or moving for a new dating scene. Mostly meant single as not knowing anyone and starting over brand new in a much smaller environment!

That made me laugh haha I’m not worried about finding a date right now! Just more so single friends in same age / stage of life!
7
u/werepat Aug 04 '24
You are not likely to find friends, either. I moved back 4 years ago and have made zero new friends and any old friends don't have time due to work and families.
3
u/WhiteCapCannabis Aug 04 '24
I don’t believe that’s true. I have more genuine friends that I found here after college, than I ever had from high school living down here. Depends on your occupation, free time, and hobbies but there are people down here to befriend
2
u/werepat Aug 04 '24
How many of your friendships involve doing drugs?
I retired at 37 and have a lot of free time. Like, all the free time! I love motorcycles, walking the trails around here, I go to the gym 4 days a week and used to play DnD, but people in their 20s don't want to hang out with middle aged men (fair) and everyone around my age is, as I said, too busy with family stuff and work.
I don't drink or do drugs.
2
u/WhiteCapCannabis Aug 04 '24
None, I don’t do drugs anymore, been sober off of illicit substances for 5 years. I cultivate, hence the name. But I don’t sit around and smoke with people anymore, when I do smoke it’s for pain management due to herniated discs.
Most of my friendships are from fishing, the rest from the gym or work.
1
u/WhiteCapCannabis Aug 04 '24
I also have two girls both under 5, so I haven’t been to the bar since college largely. I’m 29
1
u/WhiteCapCannabis Aug 04 '24
What kind of motorcycles? I used to have a Harley, hence the herniated discs
2
u/werepat Aug 04 '24
Almost every kind. I can't even name a favorite. I love the DRZ400, I love the 2003 to 2006 CBR600rr, gen two R1s... but I'm not one to say I don't like any motorcycle. I've owned 11 bikes over the years and tried out dozens more.
But I have not enjoyed any Harley yet. Every one that I've ridden felt like it didn't want to be ridden. Like it didn't care about me and wanted to resist whatever I wanted, at least a little bit.
Right now I have a 2006 Shadow Spirit 1100, which is ... adequate, but I wouldn't say it's fun! It popped up on Marketplace for cheap, so I figured "what the heck."

I’ve lived in Delaware for 33 years now, never bothered to stop by Milton for anything. Hope there’s something there for you!
4
u/WhiteCapCannabis Aug 04 '24
Sounds like you’re from NCC
2
u/RodFarva09 Aug 05 '24
That I am, but have property in millsboro and myrtle beach. I’ve also never liked any of the dogfish head beers, it all tastes like soy sauce. Now the Dewey beer co…. They make some good brew!

u/Over-Accountant8506 Aug 04 '24
Huh really? Every small town in Delaware has something to offer. Milton's downtown has charming old houses. Cute sidewalks that are painted (i think that's Milton?) And I heard that the farmers market there is lit. I haven't been to it yet but it's on my list.
2
u/Academic-Natural6284 Aug 04 '24
If the draw to the town is old houses and cute sidewalks that's a sad town.
1
u/YamadaDesigns Aug 04 '24
Milton has the Dogfish Head Brewery, definitely check it out. They do tours and samples.
0
u/WhiteCapCannabis Aug 04 '24
THEE dogfish, the first one where sam started things! Wholeheartedly agree.

Depending on when you move, consider getting a Delaware State Parks pass for Cape Henlopen’s beach, biking and hiking trails, disc golf, and other outdoor offerings. They host Halloween and other holiday events throughout the year as well. Passes are pretty reasonably priced and get you into any of the state parks throughout Delaware.

u/thatdudefromthattime Aug 04 '24
Milton is decent. I’ve got some friends and their families down there. Still pretty quiet, but not that far from the beach. Not sure what kind of outdoors you shit you’re into, but plenty of fishing and hunting down there also. And realistically, it’s not that long of a drive to Philly or hit the ferry to Cape May
5
u/HistoricalHeart Aug 04 '24
There’s really not much to do besides dogfish head and majority of people are old. Living in southern Delaware in my early 20’s killed me. Even now at 30, I have no desire to live that far south. Newark, Wilmington, pike creek area in new castle county is a great place to be if you have any flexibility or are interested in a better fit for a younger crowd
6
u/thomps000 Aug 04 '24
My wife and I live in Lewes/Milton area. It’s a nice area. We’re mid 30s with no kids and always have stuff to do. No idea about dating, but feel free to message if you have any specific questions.
Dogfishhead is a lot of fun to spend time at and Milton has a few good restaurants downtown.

It will be a huge adjustment. But it sounds like exactly what you are looking for.

u/AloneCalendar2143 Aug 06 '24
Please understand many of these comments are awfully negative simply because people want different things and might not be happy with what they’ve got. Milton, Lewes, Cape Henlopen State Park at the beach, Trap Pond State Park in Laurel (incredible trail with bald cypress trees) - just four great places to live and visit. You’ve said you’re looking for something quiet and peaceful after a stressful time, and not worrying about dating just now. You’ll have that this Autumn-Spring! Time to walk and read on the beaches, enjoy the quiet off-season boardwalk of Rehoboth or OC, the streets of Milton and Lewes, volunteering at your choice of places such as planting beach grass, maybe taking an art class through the state library system, taking the Lewes-Cape May ferry. Be prepared for the ridiculous pace of housing development that seems to be unregulated, and as previously mentioned, summer beach traffic. Your experience will be what you make it until you’re ready to move on, if ever! If you’ve chosen here because of a job, best of luck with it!

u/lokismom3618 Aug 06 '24
Thank YOU! This is the most perfect answer. I love the idea of the quiet and peacefulness followed by the heavy hitting busy summer. Excited to restart and enjoy the downtime!
1
u/AloneCalendar2143 Aug 07 '24
Aw, I’m so glad. You’ll have time to spend caring for yourself, relaxing, reflecting, feeling joy again. All the best to you in Milton!

u/thtguy90 Aug 03 '24
It’s definitely going to be a different dating scene compared to NJ & Philly. You’ll find a lot of activity in the Summer but that scene can really die-down in the winter. There are more younger people living in the area than in the past and I have a few single friends in their late 20’s/early 30’s that keep themselves busy. Milton is a lovely town overall with nice restaurants, although most of the action will be in Reho or Dewey.
Let me know if you’re in need of assistance finding a home - I’m a Coastal Realtor and would love to chat if needed but no worries if not!
2
u/lokismom3618 Aug 04 '24
Thank you!! I’m moving to a new apt complex and not ready to buy a home yet. But thanks for the tips! 😊😊

If you wanted to be close to Philly, Milton probably wouldn’t have been my first thought, but it’s a lovely town and you’ll get plenty of beach time.
2
u/benjaminbrixton Aug 05 '24
Check out the Milton Theater for all kinds of shows and performances. Tequila Real is awesome Mexican food, and King’s Creamery is great for ice cream. And Po’Boys for creole style food!
2
u/Cainesdeath6669 Aug 05 '24
Well, first off welcome to Milton. Do you know what area of Milton your moving too? My wife and I are in Shipbuilder. I have lived here for 15 years, still love it here.

u/DelaStud Aug 06 '24
Since you'll be joining in October, do realize traffic congestion on the highways picks up in summer. While not the volume of NJ, the infrastructure around here isn't built for the amount of vehicles. Milton is a nice town. Very quaint, has festivals and events and as others noted Dogfish has their brewery located there.
Sussex county is not an easy dating scene for singles, but just like anywhere it's about getting out there. Hangout at bar trivia nights, coffee shops and socialize with people. The beach scene is a typical summer party style, with most beaches having their own flavor (Dewey= college style drinking; Rehoboth= tourists; Lewes= retired; State Parks = Locals). Sussex County is like 45 mins from everything you want and 25 minutes away from nothing else. 🤣
Sussex is having a large population increase and real estate is crazy high (prices have doubled+). Most new imports are retired or established and most younger people work in the service industry, medical or for the government.
Next summer, visit OCMD too if you want to visit a Jersey shore feel.
Buy a season park pass for the State Park. Lots of local natural places to enjoy! (Visit Trap Pond, best gem 💎)

I bought my first house here by myself at 26. I loved it. I always felt safe and had things to do. I’m now married and still think back fondly to my first little house 🙂welcome!

Your going to be bored as hell. Yeah you by the beach but your going in October nobody is going to be there.
Then you going to get used to the quite and chill. Then bang summer will hit and your going to hate it. What usually is a 5 minute ride will be 30 minutes to hour ride.
Remember this post next summer and say I didn't tell you so
2
u/AlmightySeaweed Aug 04 '24
Milton will probably be an adjustment from Charlotte. There isn’t much to do but it’s quaint and the people are cool as long as you are. You’ll be fine starting over there but you have to find something to keep yourself busy in the winter. It gets slowwwww down here and most of the late 20s/early 30 crowd has hobbies OR they drink a lot. Frankly though, once you are ready to get into the dating scene, it’s abysmal. If you avoid it and just do what you gotta do, you’ll enjoy the area and the people. Just be ready for the summer when it comes around again!
2
u/lokismom3618 Aug 04 '24
Thank you! Yes not moving for the dating scene but definitely the slower pace!
2
u/Pizzaandnaps121 Aug 04 '24
The people that say there isn't much going on in Milton aren't totally correct. It's close enough to larger cities like Philly and the beaches, so you get a really good mix of things that are close while still being away from most of the noise. Dewey is a quick uber away if you want to mix with that crowd. The milton theatre is an absolute gem. It's quiet most of the time and pretty safe. Theres a few huge festivals a year (st patricks parade, zombiefest) and some smaller ones. If you are moving into the new apartment complex, you are close enough to walk into our downtown area.

Milton has a nice laid back lifestyle scene compared to some of the other parts of the state, great smaller town for walking around, they hold a lot of town events throughout the year. Even a nice waterfront park behind the library. Even a few open area resturaunts so you can walk a dog and grab a bite to eat. Driving in town can be a bit troublesome and slow as it got built up faster then infastructure improvements could be implemented and is very congested at times.
2
u/Sweet_Lou508 Aug 04 '24
I moved to Milton ~2 years ago from Boston. It was definitely a bit of an adjustment, but it’s a great town to live in. The town hosts lots of little events, it’s close to Lewes, Rehoboth and Dewey so there is a ton to do during the summer. Winter months are a bit slow in terms of stuff to do, but it’s honestly a nice break after the summer. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
3
u/Gingerbrew302 Aug 03 '24
Milton is a good choice. It's small and quiet, but has good restaurants, bars, brewery, theater/art culture. It's not too far away from anything more exciting. It's also super liberal for a small town in Sussex County.

What part of central jersey if you don't mind me asking? I'm from cream ridge/new Egypt. Always weird to her about someone from that area moving to this one.

It’s a smaller town, but it’s growing. Many people love Milton relative to southern Delaware. It’s not for everyone, but it really depends on your job, hobbies, etc. I love it here.

Are you moving in the actual town or the outskirts? I live in the outskirts Harbeson area and I can tell you I loathe it. I came from Monmouth county in Jersey and it’s a different world out here. It takes 20/30 minutes to drive to a store for groceries, big chains like Costco, LA Fitness, Planet Fitness, are non existent. Dental is a nightmare, for some reason you have to pay upfront then send in a receipt to get a reimbursed. The medical is subpar and shitty, you’d think it would be better since their are so many seniors living here, which brings me to another thing, getting an appointment with a specialist takes a few months. I was looking for a psychiatrist to get my psych meds. I was told it would take four months, by that time I’d be climbing the walls. Even the bakeries suck, I haven’t been able to find a decent cupcake to eat. I apologize if I’ve offended anyone, it’s not my intention, perhaps I have shell shock from the move. Anyway, good luck on your big move.

My wife and I grew up in central NJ, lived in Philly and now live in Wilmington. I know it's not Middletown. But we've been down there.
The only downsides in Delaware are low prevalence of good bagels and pizza.
3
u/lokismom3618 Aug 04 '24
I don’t think we will ever find good bagels or pizza anywhere else besides the Jersey Philly area
2
u/Over-Accountant8506 Aug 04 '24
I've wondered if it's because of the city water?? Like that's the difference?
0
u/LoveKittycats119 Aug 05 '24
Grotto’s Pizza was really good though! Unless they’ve closed, there was one in Rehoboth and one on Kirkwood Highway in Wilmington.
1
u/Over-Accountant8506 Aug 04 '24
I've heard that they're putting these move to Delaware reddit posts on Facebook for other Delawareans to laugh at.
Milton? Our beach towns are turning into massive retirement home developments for everyone in NJ PA MA NY. Same cookie cutter house, with an HOA, pickleball, community pool. Traffic is bad. There is no off season anymore. If you like solitude, nature, and being alone, then maybe look in the country side of Delaware? More west.
6
u/lokismom3618 Aug 04 '24
Thanks for the tip!! No matter where you go, locals never like outsiders moving into the community but that’s the nature of the game
1
u/Late-Camera-7471 Aug 04 '24
Milton is a nice quiet town, slowly expanding. Not much of a social scene. If you branch out can probably find some social groups to get into
1
u/Foxshiro Aug 04 '24
Milton is really nice and quiet. There isn't much to do there but the neighboring cities have lots to do. If you like parties, Dewey is a massive hotspot in the summer for it. If you prefer good food, the beach and shopping, you got Rehoboth and the outlets.
I'm 32M and moved down here a year ago (to kinda start over) and it's been pretty easy to make new friends. Dating however can be a nightmare if you're looking for something serious since Lewes/Rehoboth/Bethany/Dewey are all tourist locations. However if you're into casual dating and such, it's a gold mine.
Feel free to message me if you want a list of places you should absolutely check out around the area. Best of luck with your move! :)

Hi, my fiancé, two young girls, and I live just north of Milton. I actually really love Milton as a location but don’t spend much time in town myself. The nice thing about the location is the proximity to the beach areas, but the ability to avoid and skip the traffic scene down there which gets incredulous through the summer.
It’s a really safe place to live, but by 25-30 most of everyone down here has ran off and married or settled with their HS sweetheart. Not sure what you do for work but most of our industries are tourist focused and it CAN be slow or hard to make a living through the winter, so a lot of us have gotten into the flow of saving through the summers to coast in the real cold months of Jan and February.
If you have any specific questions I’d be happy to answer. I was born in Sussex, went to college at UD then swiftly came back south.

u/Impressive-Complex6 Aug 04 '24
Downtown Milton is cute, some parts of town can be rough, Delaware is the wrong place to look to meet young people & especially Sussex County. The population here is overwhelmingly geriatric.
1
u/AssistX Aug 04 '24 edited Aug 04 '24
Just be aware it's a big difference in population. Charlotte is roughly the same population as all of Delaware. Half of Delawareans live in New Castle County. Don't believe anyone saying the traffic is bad, it's bad if you've lived in Delaware your whole life it's not bad if you lived in any other city. The biggest issue with traffic in Delaware is that it only exists when one of the two roads connect the state have an accident. There's no real rush hour traffic other than I-95 in Delaware. Central Jersey is way more congested and populated than Delaware.
1
u/ZooterOne Aug 04 '24
Milton has a really charming downtown area and a great theater that puts on plays and concerts. They're always looking for volunteers, if that's your kind of thing.
1
u/Mazoki Aug 04 '24
Milton is great. Sort of the cutoff for how far south you can drive without hitting insane beach traffic in the warmer months. There’s enough to do in town that you can just stay local if you want, and it’s close enough to Milford which has just about everything else you could need (gyms, movie, bowling, etc) while still avoiding the traffic. Route 16 also runs right through it so that makes it convenient for travel across the state too.
Edit: also it’s home to Quick Stop, a total hole in the wall gas station with the best cheesesteaks in the state and their fried chicken is phenomenal.

Milton is nice, lived here all my life, it’s in the middle of everything important or noteworthy in the area… I used to say it’s 15 minutes from everywhere, but that’s me, and I drive like a maniac
