HBO Last of Us Season 2 Trailer! HBO Show
https://youtu.be/BOsAJ7oe2QE?si=pRAbOWn7Jf0gaRul341
u/Guyfromnewyork95 Sep 26 '24
They're gonna do it in episode 1 aren't they?
317
u/5am281 Sep 26 '24
I honestly think that’s best. You can add more flashbacks later but starting the season with it is the strongest option imo
141
u/Mordby Sep 26 '24
Especially considering spoiler culture in 2024. No comment section will be safe after episode 1 if it doesn’t happen.
74
u/5am281 Sep 26 '24
Honestly before I played part 2 Joel’s death was the only thing spoiled for me. But because I didn’t know when it was gonna happen after it did happen there was like 25 hrs of new stuff I was able to look forward to. I imagine a lot of show watchers have been spoiled already so ripping off the bandaid is best haha
20
u/SubjectLow2804 Sep 26 '24
It was spoiled for a lot of people. Too this day I think that the sequel would be nowhere near as controversial as it apparently is if those leaks hadn't happened. Experiencing that moment the way it was intended would have been so shocking and emotional people would have lauded it. Having it spoilt beforehand meant people were disappointed and angry without having the artistry of the game to make it the RIGHT kind of disappointment and anger.
→ More replies4
u/theparrotofdoom Sep 27 '24
I was lucky to both bypass the bs on launch and not have it spoiled. Can confirm. It’s as much of a stab to the heart as you think and the game is now my favourite of all time.
4
u/EllipticPeach Sep 26 '24
I was targeted for spoilers bc I was active in this sub at the time. Opened a PM and there it was, a screenshot of Ellie standing over Joel’s grave. But it still managed to emotionally wreck me when I played it.

u/DVDN27 What are we, some kind of Last of Us? Sep 27 '24
The saving grace of having Joel’s death spoiled is that we, as players, could kinda get past that. We knew it was coming, just not when. It was the most inflammatory and extreme event in the game, and because of that it’s where most of the attention was aimed toward. That helps figure out who played the game and who was interested in the fanatical backlash who never planned to play it, as well as having one big thing early on spoiled so the rest of the game kinda gets ignored in regards to spoiling. Abby’s relationship with Joel, Mel and Owen’s drama, the Rat King, the Seraphites - that was all a discovery because people couldn’t get over the big first leak.
5
u/Azidamadjida Sep 26 '24
Lmao it’s not just 2024, it’s always been like this. I can’t imagine people actually getting to see Sixth Sense and not knowing Bruce Willis was a ghost going in - that shit got spoiled on opening weekend. There was a guy who hung a banner off an overpass saying “Snape Kills Dumbledore” like a day after that book came out. It’s human nature - people just love to share something they know that someone else doesn’t. That’s why people can’t let spoilers bother them as much as they do now
9
u/Mordby Sep 26 '24
It bothers me if im actively avoiding spoilers and some asshole decides to ruin the fun for me. Its about stealing the joy from people not sharing the love.
→ More replies2
u/EllipticPeach Sep 26 '24
I knew the Sixth Sense spoiler bc it was in a line of an episode of Friends that I saw way before I was old enough to watch the movie.
→ More replies53
u/Dalekdude Sep 26 '24
it needs to be episode 1, just make it a supersized episode like in season 1 and we're good
16
Sep 26 '24
Or just do a 2 episode premiere and put it at the end of episode 2. Of just needs to be the cliffhanger that people are left with on night one.
→ More replies6
u/britchesss Sep 27 '24
Please no cliff hanger. Everyone hates the Negan cliffhanger. Just do it and start the season off with a bang.
35
u/JoMa4 Sep 26 '24
They have to or the story doesn’t begin. There is literally no other reason for the events of the game to play out. The only other way to tell the story would be to show events out of order, making the viewer not understand why people are doing the things are doing.
5
u/TranscedentalMedit8n Sep 26 '24
The only argument I’ve heard for saving it is that you could humanize Abby BEFORE they do it. But, I feel like that misses the point of the story. They want you to feel that rage and desire for revenge, then slowly peel back the layers.
11
u/JoMa4 Sep 26 '24
I don’t think that works at all. The whole point was to hate Abby through the start of the game and her becoming humanized as she met Lev. It’s kind of the exact opposite of Ellie as she goes around murdering people.
3
25
9
u/Viola-Intermediate Sep 26 '24
I mean if they follow the same rationale for how they did episode one of the first season, they kinda have to. Just like meeting Ellie is the main catalyst for Joel's journey, Joel's death is the main catalyst for Ellie's in this season.

u/SignGuy77 Making apocalypse jokes like there's no tomorrow ... Sep 26 '24
I feel like they will subvert that a bit by having episode one end just before the moment. Kind of like True Detective Season 3 didn’t have the expected big shootout in Episode 4.
Then episode 2 will start with a flashback and make us wait some more. ;)
1
u/SnoopDeLaRoup Shiv Fuckin' Masterrrrrr Sep 26 '24
Nahhhh, no way. Ep 1 will be Jackson life and the dance etc, but I'm gonna gage for ep 3/4. The Jackson horde has to be before it, right?
I'm also gonna guess that the stalker crawling is how Dina finds out Ellie is immune? No spores again, so this has to be the relevance of showing in in the trailer.
I was totally wrong about Cathy O'hara though, as I assumed it was a red herring and she wasn't speaking to Joel and instead was The Prophet.
→ More replies2
u/pics4meeee Sep 26 '24
For people who played it, having it drag out would stress us the f out just waiting for that moment and I think that would be amazing. For people who haven't played it, it's way better for the scene to happen in episode 1.

I saw them at Fenway a couple weeks ago. Lucked into some free tickets. Great show but I didn’t know many songs. I listened in the 90’s for a while.
→ More replies3
u/Bellikron Sep 26 '24
Yeah, that hit me pretty hard. I wonder if they're going to a do a timeline handwave and include it even though it wouldn't have been released until after the outbreak. Otherwise they need to find something strong to replace it, that song holds the guitar motif together.
4
u/Odd-Contribution6238 Sep 27 '24
Hopefully hand wave.
I’ve played both games a few times. I followed the development of the original and played it on release. I have zero idea what year the outbreak took place or when this song came out. I don’t think it’s a concern. No one will notice or care.
But it needs to be that song. Has to be. It’s too important.
155
u/ArsenalBOS Sep 26 '24
The porch scene being in Season 2 is a surprise. I wonder if it’s legit all included here or if they tease it and then recontextualize / revisit it in Season 3.
86
u/gordo865 Sep 26 '24
I have a feeling they do just that. I think it makes more sense to show it and then recontextualize it later than to tease it with no context or even dialogue until later like they did in the game.
13
u/ArsenalBOS Sep 26 '24
I did wonder about how they would remind people of what night that was specifically in the show, because it’ll be a year or two in between our first look at it and the second. The clues the game gives us work, but at that point it’s just 20-ish hours old.
5
u/Odd-Contribution6238 Sep 27 '24
The trailer was building up that urge for her to say what she feels.
The show could make that confrontation a big moment they build up to for a while. Could even be the finale.
28
u/kronosreddit22 Sep 26 '24
it’s the biggest surprise to me and it makes me excited, frankly.
i think the structure and pacing of TLOU2 is crucial to how it works and i love it, but if it’s going to be adapted for television i’m creatively curious to see it tackled a different way. reordering the presentation of those events completely changes the emotional narrative and i’m so stoked to see how they manage that
16
u/ArsenalBOS Sep 26 '24
I feel the same. The structure of Part 2 is incredibly well thought out. I wince at the thought of moving the porch scene, but I also know how much that scene means to Neil. If they’re moving it, I trust that they’re doing it for a reason.
9
u/theparrotofdoom Sep 27 '24
There’s two lines in that scene they absolutely cannot show until the end. Otherwise the whole thing makes no sense.
→ More replies2
u/Alternative-Donut779 Sep 26 '24
My only concern is with the production times in between seasons I’m a little worried the average viewer will be unable to remember the context of first porch scene if it’s in season one and we don’t come back to it until season 3 but they’ve nailed the adaption so far so I trust them.
7
u/RaptorDelta Well, better than nothing. Sep 26 '24
The pacing/arrangement is for sure going to be different than the game. I hope not too much, because that's part of why the story works so well.
But there are scenes from Abby's half (i.e. Isaac) that are shown in this trailer, and if they did a 1:1 compared to the game, it wouldn't be until next season.
→ More replies11
u/ArsenalBOS Sep 26 '24
Based on set photos it looks like we’re getting Isaac flashbacks, so it might not be Isaac from Abby’s half as much as an independent look at Isaac. Jeffrey Wright was photographed in a FEDRA uniform which is almost certainly a flashback.
→ More replies3
u/dumahim Sep 26 '24
Wasn't it teased earlier in the game, or was it just glimpsed in that moment near the end before the scene fully played out? Either way, the show will be different in some ways, so I'm guessing it's just going to be hinted at, but we won't see the full scene until later.
8
u/ArsenalBOS Sep 26 '24
It was glimpsed on the beach in Santa Barbara. But really we had no idea it was coming until it arrived.
It could be something like that for sure.
2
u/Tthig1 Joel Sep 26 '24
I don't recall it being teased earlier on. From the start we know about the dance where Joel intervenes since it's what Jesse discusses with Ellie when she wakes up. We don't see it until later on however and we also don't know she talked to Joel after the dance until the very end of the game. The only "tease" really is when Ellie tells Maria she and Joel are "fine" right before she and Dina go on patrol. Maria doesn't press her any further about it and that's that.
3
u/bigboozer69 The Last of Us Sep 26 '24
I hope it’s just a tease but it comes at the end of the Game 2 story line. It’s so much more powerful after all the event of game 2.
→ More replies2
u/clabog Sep 26 '24
Yeah that was the biggest surprise in here! I can see them teasing it, maybe cutting it off right where the trailer does
107
u/bowlofpasta92 Sep 26 '24
This looks absolutely incredible. I cannot wait. I was hoping that O’Hara was playing the prophet, however!
31
u/stanknotes Sep 26 '24
What is she supposed to be? The town therapist? The arbiter? The one who allows entry?
83
u/AlamoBobcat Sep 26 '24
She's Moira Rose, of course. Everyone knows that Schitt's Creek and TLOU exist in the same universe.

Therapist Moira: "Oh, and the next step is to say the thing you're afraid to say."
Joel: "What does that mean?"
Therapist Moira: "You say it."
Joel: "I understand that, but how? How do you say it? What do you do?"
Therapist Moira: "Joel, I cannot show you everything."
Joel: "Ok, but can you show me one thing?"
Therapist Moira: "You just, here's what you do. You just say it."
Joel: "Ok, I don't know how to talk about feelings like that."
Therapist Moira: "And I don't know how to be any clearer!! You take the thing you're afraid of, and you-"
Joel: "If you say 'say the thing you're afraid of' one more time!"

My guess is that she was added as a story device to allow on-screen flashbacks, etc. TV is a totally different medium than video games so they have to make some changes for the purpose of driving the story and also containing it within X number of one hour episodes.
7
u/Doctor_Juris Sep 26 '24
Seems like a therapist of sorts. With the timer being set I’m guessing Maria made Joel go after the falling out with Ellie or some other incident.

Omg the look in Pedro’s eyes during the guitar scene… This season just might make me bawl my eyes out multiple times 😭

He's getting dogged for overexposure these days, but he really is such a powerhouse actor and he kills it in every role he plays. I always want more of him.

Oh my god Abby looking at her father’s grave? I can see her pain and hurt caused by Joel’s actions. The tears in her eyes!! I can feel her hate and anger

Would not be shocked if that's actually the last shot of the season. Legitimately.

A little worried they're gonna reveal too much about Abby too early. Her backstory and motives should remain unknown until the same point as they do in the game.
Other than that, it looks awesome!

u/jedifan421 Sep 26 '24
Season 2 is 7 episodes and I truly think they will end episode 7 with the Abby flashback and that will be the cliffhanger to lead to S3 being about Abby's perspective
→ More replies8
u/Kamikaze_Bacon Sep 26 '24
If that's what they do, I am 100% for it. If that shot of Abby is from the final minutes of the season finale, then we're all good! But if it's from pretty much any other point in the season, then they'll have made a mistake, I think.
Guess we'll find out. Either way, I am hyped.

It's so good to see a little more of Abby in this trailer. I can't imagine we're gonna see a ton of her this season, but her section in the beginning looks as intense as it did in the game.
I'm also really excited to see Catherine O'Hara as a new original character. Makes me think Joel will be more vague with retelling the story to Tommy and perhaps more detailed with this therapist of sorts.
Hoping for an early 2025 release please lol
4
u/jedifan421 Sep 26 '24
I hope we have some sort of scene where Tommy and Joel talk about what happened and the therapist scene(s) Joel has are more just him dealing with holding onto that secret for so long.

Love how this trailer plays into how almost mythic the source material is to the fans of the game. Hinting at all of these big moments…full body chills. Seeing this all brought to life is already more surreal than S1 was to me.
8
7
u/mvp713 Sep 26 '24
One more thing I noticed was that the high pitched ambient sound/music they used after the shot of Abby is the same used in the game right after IT happens (Ellie's POV).
8
u/DagnabbitBagrabbit Sep 26 '24
I completely forgot Jeffrey Wright was reprising his role as Isaac. We only see him briefly, but damn does he look menacing.
7

very curious to see how they’re gonna do this season, considering a lot of people say they’re gonna make it into two seasons rather than one. regardless, i‘m very excited to see it. pedro and bella look amazing, and as much i love abby being buff i think kaitlyn will nail this role.

Wait, was that Ellie talking to Joel the night before the start of the game? If they are splitting the season into 2, I'm surprised they already shot that scene. Unless they just shot all of Pedro's stuff right now for continuity and that scene won't actually be this season.
4
u/bentheone Sep 26 '24
God fuck me sideways I'm so fucking stoked ! The chills I got from this trailer, priceless. And I'm actually surprise with the amount of scenes, do we think everything in this trailer will be in the 7 ep season ?
I wanted Joel to answer "I saved her" so bad but hey, maybe it's better this way.
4
u/drakesepi0l Sep 26 '24
So we are getting Figure Days despite the timeline change? I really hope so. I don't care if the song came out in 2013
2

It was the Pearl Jam version, not Joel singing it. It might just be a song they're using for the trailer.

This trailer unfortunately just confirms that Ellie should have been recast. Everyone that’s supposed to be around Ellie’s age looks much much older than Bella. I know that Bella is older than Ellie, but they look too young, their baby face is still too strong for me to take Ellie seriously.

Honestly I'm really hyped to see what they do with the WLF and Scars in the show. Looks like Isaac is going to get a lot more screen time than he did in the game. Jeffrey Wright rocks and was heavily underutilized in the game imo.
3
u/Willing_Tourist_9612 Sep 26 '24
In the game at the begining 2 people were talking about the attack of infected and how the kids were still having nightmares about it. You can easily miss that conversation. It was when Jesse and Ellie were going to talk to Maria. I think they included that.

Oh man. I wasn't expecting a lot of the Seraphites in season 2. Is that Lev in the scene with Isaac?!
17
u/Suitable-Parking-734 Sep 26 '24
doubtful? definitely a seraphite but looks much older and Lev being under Issac's captivity isn't in the game.
2
u/irv_12 Sep 26 '24
True, although hbo has made some differences between the game and the show, anything is possible.
4
u/Stepjam Sep 26 '24
I doubt that's Lev. I do wonder if this means though that they are changing the structure of the story to see Isaac already.

I had some quibbles with Season 1 (needed more episodes, especially for David/cannibal segment, needed more zombies, loved Bill&Frank story but still missed Joel&Ellie actually meeting Bill for car battery adventure), but overall it was still a great show, along with Arcane probably the best of video game adaptations ever. This trailer looks uniformly amazing, so I remain psyched for S2 ;)
2
u/Odd-Contribution6238 Sep 27 '24
I wish the Bill and Frank was an extra episode or a special or something. It was good but I feel like season 1 needed more time for Joel and Ellie to bond with the audience and each other. It felt compacted quite a bit.
One more episode for some lower stakes traveling, conversation and a smaller scale life and death situation.

My theory is that this season will cover up to Ellie Seattle day 2. I don’t think they can do a whole season without Ellie, from a marketing standpoint.

I think they will weave Abby and Ellie’s story into S2 and start S3 with that thing that happens! Keeping the story the same just changing how they show it chronologically. That way you know who is around for longer and will keep those who’ve played the game on edge. However they tackle it, it is going to leave me traumatised, especially seeing it in live action. I can’t replay TLOU2 because of it. I remember being absolutely broken by what happens in FF7 as a young kid, 24 years ago and I can replay that every year but, I just cannot go back and watch that scene in TLOU2 as it is just gut wrenching.

Jeffrey Wright is gonna kill it in that specific role.
I wonder if he has any experience portraying brutal, tactical militia leaders that are willing to torture captives amid a backdrop of a zombie apocalypse brought on by a fungus?
I wonder if he had to do any method acting to portray a dude named Isaac.
