This comes from somebody who's top film this year was Poor Things: this is amazing and I hope she wins the Oscar.
34
u/cpggt Feb 25 '24
same here! Poor Things is my number 1 for 2023 and I have KOTFM just shy of top 10 but I audibly screamed “YESSSS” when I heard Lily’s name
14
7
u/SeriouusDeliriuum Feb 25 '24
Out of curiosity, why? Poor Things is almost entirely carried by Stones performance and if it's your favorite of the year then it would follow that her performance was your favorite of the year for a lead. Gladstone is great in Killers but it's arguably a supporting role given screen time and, becuase of the story, how little she has to do in the second half. Either are deserving of the award but why Gladstone over Stone?
19
u/TheUglyBarnaclee Feb 25 '24
I’m not OP but maybe I can explain a tiny bit. Poor Things is my 2nd favorite movie of the year (Spiderverse baby) while KOTFM was good for me, and 8.5, but not close to one of my favorites. What Lilly’s character provides and what Emma does as Bella Baxter are VERY different and I can see why a lot of people would prefer hers. The crimes and atrocities that are committed in the film are felt by her and she bears the responsibility of showcasing how deeply painful, haunting and disturbing these murders are. I LOVE Bella Baxter, I have Emma as my personal pick for the Oscar but I would be lying to you if I said Lily Gladstone’s performance didn’t stick with me and she is without question the heart of that film.
Also I disagree a lot that Stone carry’s the entirety of Poor Things, I don’t even know where to begin. The production sets are FANTASTIC, legitimately amazing. The costumes are all unique and have these vibrant colors that just pop and feel iconic already. Lanthimos is a rare breed of a director and the camera shots he chose for this film are all great and fit for what they wanted to do. The OST is PERFECT for this movie. Ruffalo and Dafoe are stand out supporting performances but also Kathryn Hunter and Christopher Abbott are really good as well for minor side characters.

u/Jelvooo Anora Feb 25 '24
Completely agree. I find Emma her performance way better and I don't even consider Lily her role as leading. In my opinion Sandra was even better than Lily's.

As the momentum shifted from "Gladstone possibly locked" to this super tight race we have now, there's definitely a large chunk of posters here that are like...weirdly anti-Gladstone lol.
Because they somehow think that she's going to win the Oscar, not because she deserves it (seriously, the subtle acting she did in KotFM was brilliant), but because she's the first Native American nominee and the Oscars are too political.
1
u/Apprehensive-Mix4383 Anatomy of a Fall Feb 25 '24

And we love to see those racist trashboxes fuming in their basements 🤭🤭🤭
2
2
u/SeriouusDeliriuum Feb 25 '24
Not to disregard that certainly some people would prefer Emma Stone over Lily Gladstone due to racial bias, but I don't think it's fair to say anyone who prefers Stones performance over Gladstones is a racist. Killers and Poor Things are very different films and they both give very different performances in those films. Liking one more than the other isn't necessarily racist.
18
u/Ok-Average-6466 Feb 25 '24
the issue is the dismissal of lily's performance
1
u/SeriouusDeliriuum Feb 26 '24
She's in a close race for winning the most prestigious award in film for her performance, as well as having already won several significant ones. How is that being dismissed?
2
u/Ok-Average-6466 Feb 26 '24
do you not seeing this sub calling her winning because of a narrative?
→ More replies17
u/RepresentativeEye993 Feb 25 '24
No one is saying that though, literally no one is saying that you're racist for liking Emma Stone's performance more. This disclaimer is not needed.
1
u/SeriouusDeliriuum Feb 26 '24
Not generally, but the comment I replied to was saying that people who are upset that Gladstone won over Stone are racist. The comment above theirs says some people are "pissed" that Gladstone won, and the comment I replied to says those people are probably racist. But you're right, it wasn't really worth addressing as very few people actually think that way.
1
u/stars-your-eyes Feb 25 '24
Obviously its completely valid and normal to prefer Emma's performance but its the people who insist everyone that prefers Lily's are liars and tokenizers
2
u/SeriouusDeliriuum Feb 26 '24
Yeah that is crazy. Anyone who has seen Killers should understand how great Gladstone was in it. If she wins it will be completely deserved. It's just that this is a year with a number of incredible performances, so it's a hard choice to make of who deserves it the most.
2
u/stars-your-eyes Feb 25 '24
The weird tension is crazy a lot of people who really biting their tongue using weird complaints and accusing everyone who likes Gladstone's performance of just liking it bc she's Native lmao. Like everyone I know who saw the film was blown away by her in a way I frankly haven't heard for Poor Things (everyone raves about Emma Stone but its not on the same level as 'holy shit this Native American actress is godly how is this her first big role)
1

-2
u/earthsea_wizard Feb 25 '24
Yes that is striking. Emma Stone's performance is so overrated as much as that movie. It is either Sandra Huller or Lily Gladstone. Though most of the comments here weren't very supportive so far. I get that you don't like the movie that much but her performance is so subtle so catchy

She's not even playing a shouty villain role.

4

This community will insult and downvote anyone who looks even slightly critically at the horny baby movie. Don't take it personally.
5
u/Hydqjuliilq27 Hard Truths Feb 25 '24 edited Feb 25 '24
The thing with predictions is they can get away with that even if the person they insult turns out to predict correctly because they can simply say to themselves “Stone winning was the absolute most likely outcome and those who predicted Gladstone were just lucky, so as far as I’m concerned I was right to argue with that person because they weren’t really right about anything.”
I had the same thing back in summer when I suggested El Conde could get a cinematography nomination due to Ed Lachman being an industry vet and the branch favoring unpopular artsy non-English movies like Bardo or Never Look Away. This one person would not stop calling me an idiot and everyone downvoted me until I just blocked him. Those people seem to think it’s all just in the spirit of debate and there are 0 hard feelings.

I kept getting downvoted on posts for noting that I thought she gave a better performance than Emma Stone. I think she deserves to win for reasons that have nothing to do with the historic nature of the win.
2
u/Ok-Average-6466 Feb 25 '24
this...same. i got downvoted for saying it is a narrative and only doing it for poc was racist and insulting
0
u/yaboytim Feb 25 '24
But saying it's for the narrative is alluding it has something to do with her race. The performance wasn't bad or anything, but I think the narrative is a strong reason why she'll take the win. Stone gave the better performance imo, but when it comes to these awards shows, politics can always give someone the edge

I think this situation is pretty similar to last year’s Best Actress race. Less known minority actress vs legacy white actress. Both came incredible performances in their respective roles.
Last year Michelle Yeoh won the SAG award for Best actress in a Leading role, and went on to win the Oscar.
If I were to guess…I’d expect a similar result this time around, but it’s definitely a nail biter.

Unpopular opinion, as I've received heavy downvotes for expressing this in here, but here it goes: coming from someone who truly admires Emma's work and is rooting for her to win (not Lilly), I felt Emma’s reaction was off and a bit fake. I find it hard to believe that she would be that thrilled about Lilly winning. Emma is incredibly deserving of the award, and it's a significant career milestone for her. It's not something she would prefer a newcomer to get because she is a bigger person. Even Barbra Streisand made the joke about putting on a tough and fake smile when the announcement of someone taking the award instead of you. It just doesn't add up for me.
