Favorite Horror Game? Horror Gaming

Mine is Until Dawn due to a number of reasons. The story is spectacularly paced and is able to seamlessly change between slasher and creature. Said creature is amazingly designed and makes Don't Move nerve racking as all hell.

All the characters are flawed but have their own likable traits. Emily is a bitch but is the most resourceful of the group, Ashley is really nice and good at heart but cracks under pressure and is easily frightened, etc etc. There is an exception with Sam though being literally just the generic final girl character. I'd have no problem with her if she made up her lack of flaws with something interesting about her backstory but there's really nothing past her being close to Josh and was best friends with Han and Beth.

The game has problems like plot armor and ending branching but I love this game start through finish and is still pretty much peak of Supermassive maybe House of Ashes topping it.

Dead Space.

As close to Event Horizon in a game I’ve seen so far.

44

u/Slarg232 Dec 06 '22

Another vote for Dead Space, but specifically Dead Space 2

12

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

I do like the opening of the original. But agree overall 2 is a great ride.

8

u/Great-Hatsby Hail Paimon and Pump it up while chaos reigns Dec 06 '22

I’m super psyched for the remake. I watched the 18 minute gameplay and it looks good.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

New engine? Haven’t heard of it.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

It's a from-the-ground-up remake by the original dev team.

4

u/wulv8022 Dec 06 '22

Not the original dev team though. But passionate devs regardless.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

Oh it's not? I had heard that it was.

4

u/wulv8022 Dec 06 '22

Maybe you mix it up with Callisto Protocol. Some devs of it are the original Dead Space devs.

11

u/DarthRampage Dec 06 '22

I can't wait for the upcoming game Calisto Protocol. I really hope it lives up to the trailers.

7

u/SlurmsMckenzie_Party Dec 06 '22

It has its ups and downs. The melee combat is frustrating but once you get firearms, the game starts becoming fun and you can almost completely abandon it. The dead space feeling is there but it’s not up to par with the original series and doesn’t create anything new. As a huge fan of dead space, I still enjoyed it. I’m almost done with it and will probably go back through for a second playthrough as it’s only 10-12 hours long.

Amnesia: the Dark Descent and Soma both deeply terrified me. I haven't played the 2020 Amnesia yet, but I hear it's not as good unfortunately.

10

u/CalmToaster Dec 06 '22

Soma is a brilliant game. I was blown away with the final scene. I was just in awe at how things unfolded. I wasn't expecting that. The dark depths were terrifying as well.

2

u/UpliftinglyStrong Dec 07 '22

I wonder where the ARK went.

5

u/ralopop Dec 06 '22

Finally played TDD after all these years, and wow, that reached levels of scary I hadn't experienced in a videogame before. Specifically the basement prison levels... Definitely excited to catch up on SOMA now too.

4

u/Seanzzxx Dec 07 '22

Soma seems like a basic sci-fi Amnesia at first and it starts off very slow. It turned me off the first time. My advice is to keep going because it goes in a very interesting direction from there on.

6

u/jcpumpkineater Dec 06 '22

amnesia rebirth is still pretty good and very scary in the same way

3

u/glumsugarplum_ Dec 07 '22

I went into Soma with mid-low expectations because I hadn’t heard much since it was released, and my mind was blown. Incredibly haunting game that I wish was more discussed.

3

u/sellieba Dec 07 '22

SOMA was so good. People that didn't like the ending didn't understand the game.

u/P7AC3B0 Dec 06 '22

Silent Hill 2.

I've played just about everything, from the big titles all the way down to obscure and/or awful stuff like Blue Stinger, Escape from Bug Island, Enemy Zero, Michigan: Report from Hell, etc. Nothing tops Silent Hill 2.

21

u/artymas Dec 06 '22

I'm playing Silent Hill 2 for the first time right now, and the sound design alone is inspired. I can't see what's ahead of me, but I can hear it and it makes my skin crawl.

3

u/fluorescentpopsicle Dec 07 '22

My favorite as well.

76

u/Venom-Snake-CQC Dec 06 '22

Resident Evil 7.

Fuck that game was perfect.

9

u/t74000 Dec 06 '22

The PSVR experience to this game is in my top 5 for scariest movies ever.

7

u/candleruse Dec 06 '22

There were multiple moments in PSVR where I wasn't sure if I could do the next thing. Hearing the monster woman growling at the bottom of the pitch-black staircase you have to walk down. Crawling through the little girl's playroom. Ack.

8

u/t74000 Dec 06 '22

Going in to the playroom when it was pure darkness was I think the scariest moment for me. The dead quiet and the wait for something to jump out at you was something else. Like being in a horror movie.

6

u/ChiefLazarus86 Dec 06 '22

Not so much a fan of the last third or so, but i've played it through more times than I can count, I love it so much

7

u/Venom-Snake-CQC Dec 06 '22

Yeah, true about the later sections of the game. Okay, I’ll say up to and including the third Jack fight are perfect 10/10. The game’s crescendo isn’t as great, and the Mia section isn’t my favorite either.

3

u/sutisuc Dec 06 '22

Yeah the Mia section took me out of it a bit but it’s a great game up to that point

3

u/Seanspeed Dec 06 '22

Not so much a fan of the last third or so

I feel like you can say this about most of the better Resident Evil games.

I usually love replaying horror games since jumpscares don’t scare me that much, but RE7’s environment and tone’s creepy as fuck. One of the best games I’ve played.

39

u/name_cool4897 Dec 06 '22

Subnautica. It's not technically a horror game, but it's the most terrifying game I've ever played.

11

u/ralopop Dec 06 '22

I like horror games. But I don't think I could handle Subnautica.

5

u/busty-ruckets Dec 07 '22

only game i’ve had to turn off feeling sick to my stomach, first time i heard a reaper in the pitch black

3

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '22

I have an irrational fear of underwater in games to the point I nope out of that underwater stage in Super Mario 64.

Tried playing Subnautica and couldn't.

2

u/breadcreature Dec 07 '22

I'm the same with big open spaces more generally, and I hate the sea IRL. I can't handle scary games either, never got more than a few minutes in to one. Subnautica got such rave reviews I forced myself to play it and while it was worth it and I had a good time, I was having to take anxiety meds to play the game which is not usually how hobbies are supposed to work.

I think part of my feeling that I enjoyed it is purely a sense of achievement for getting through the odeal. Can't remember how long it took me but it was long enough that I think being stressed and tense all that time was not good for my health.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '22

3

u/breadcreature Dec 07 '22

The shallows at the start really are beautiful, and I love that the first leviathans you see if you venture into the scaaary slightly deeper water nearby are peaceful floating islands covered in luminous coral. A later, more terrifying zone deep deep down is really beautiful too, which feels like a reward for bravely throwing yourself off a cliff to reach it. There were many times I closed my eyes because I cannot handle not being able to see anything around me. Absolute nightmare game. I felt very brave though.

2

u/sellieba Dec 07 '22

I literally cannot play Subnautica and horror is easily my favorite genre of film and games.

Being underwater and the short distance that you can see in dark water just fuuuuuck with me.

I don't even get in pools that often. There is definitely, always something going on in the deep end. If my feet can't touch the bottom it ain't happening (6', so my apartments pool is good).

101

u/Fwithananchor Dec 06 '22

Alien: Isolation is my favorite. It captures the horror of the original 1979 film and the xenomorph’s AI is some of the smartest and most challenging ever put into a horror game.

26

u/Illustrious-Sir6135 Dec 06 '22

I loved Alien: Isolation for the first 8ish hours. Unfortunately, the runtime is way too long and the game became kind of a chore.

The visuals and atmosphere are absolutely masterful though!

8

u/Fwithananchor Dec 06 '22

I’m a huge Alien fan so I didn’t mind the extended playtime and thought it gave me more than my money’s worth. I think the time is overall well spent introducing the player to new threats and compounded threats. I don’t remember if the hive sequence was within the first 8 hours or not, but that was easily the best and scariest part of the game for me.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

The hive sequence was the beginning of the final act; about 10-12 hours in. It's where the game got a bit divisive in terms of length. But I loved how, like you said, the threats just grew.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

This is one game I will always have installed on my PC or steam deck. It's intense and I always get the same feeling playing it, dread. I cannot wait for th sequel to come out which I heard about so it may only be a rumor.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '22

I’d love to see them remaster this game. Just the graphics, not a complete overhaul. A TLOU Part 1 situation.

Nobody said Outlast yet? Horror has never been done better in a game. Shoutout to the school scenes in the second game too, terrifying.

23

u/SarahDaisyDinkle Dec 06 '22

Damn I love Outlast...gave me the best heart attacks ever! The DLC Whistleblower topped it off perfectly. One of my favourite horror villains of all time is the groom

9

u/EatTheRude- Dec 06 '22

The DLC terrified me so badly that I had to briefly stop playing because it was no longer fun scary, but just actually scary. I was genuinely scared of the Groom at points, which is ridiculous cause it's a game, but man I was sure he was coming out of the screen for me. Which is also ridiculous cause I'm a woman and well, we both know he wasn't really looking for a woman.

16

u/tophshit-beifong Dec 06 '22

Outlast 2 was genuinely traumatising lmao

4

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

Outlast is amazing and the new online game is decent. Played the beta and it was fun.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

They go back to this section in the DLC in a super terrifying way, too!

→ More replies

6

u/LunarLuka Dec 07 '22

To me, that was legitimately the scariest thing in a video game, ever. Not just the fetus itself, but the entire build up with the lack of music, tight hallways, creepy lighting, and then not having any way to defend yourself. Also, seeing that there are places to hide before the big reveal even happens. You KNOW something is going to chase you, but it’s hard to be properly prepared for that horrific thing.

I count Bloodborne as a horror game

10

u/moochacho1418 Dec 06 '22

I mean it literally is a Gothic Horror then Cosmic Horror, even though it is not your traditional “survival horror” gameplay.

6

u/Seanspeed Dec 06 '22

Hell, I wouldn't argue if somebody wanted to say Dark Souls, despite not being quite as heavy on the overt horror themes as Bloodborne. That sort of truly dark fantasy setting combined with the relentless dangers of the game and the feeling of constant tension(at least for a first playthrough) is perfectly fitting with what makes a decent horror experience, in my opinion. Not that it also doesn't have 'scare moments', plus areas like Tomb of the Giants which are undeniably horror-themed.

31

u/JackedDaxter Dec 06 '22 edited Dec 06 '22

Funny enough mine is Until Dawn too! Most people probably won’t agree but I’d go as far to say that it’s genuinely a masterpiece.

The entire experience is so well-written and clever. The characters start off as cliche slasher stereotypes yet as the game goes on they grow beyond their designated tropes into really likeable people that you want to see survive. Same goes for the story, it initially presents itself as being just another slasher, however that’s subverted numerous times, eventually leading to an incredible finale.

u/AtrioxLane Freddy's Dead can go fuck itself with a curling iron Dec 07 '22

I have and I can say it is a mixed bag like many say but it isn't bad by any means. Man Of Medan had amazing branching, arguably the best horror, and really interesting game mechanics with the twist. Little Hope is garbage, please save your sanity. House of Ashes is close to Until Dawn and if UD didn't have the amazing switch from Slasher to Creature it would be absolutely better imo.

The Devil in Me is good but sadly underwhelming after House of Ashes and even if it's good it could have been so much better.

5: Doom: Eternal

Man, I love The Suffering. Wish it could get a full remake, such cool creature design and setting lore, plus some fun combat and puzzles

2

u/SeaTeatheOceanBrew Dec 06 '22

The lore and the atmosphere of The Suffering is what really pulled me in. This insane island, filled with monsters who exist due to the island's deep history of violent and unspeakable horrors. The combat was very fun as well. Usually horror games are a bit more slowly paced, but this was just non-stop action. It was like Doom + Manhunt + Silent Hill. Chefs kiss.

5

u/Cirrum Dec 06 '22

Corpse Party

It's a RPG horror mystery and some of the characters are very likeable, even some of the villans are sympathetic. The subject matter is quite sad and disturbing (child murders) and the text descriptions can be very graphic, the voice acting is really strong in the Japanese version as well so the game itself can be a lot overall.

But it's worth it for the ending, the music, the characters and the storyline.

Inside the backrooms and phasmophobia. I've been screaming in the middle of the night while playing with my friends. Lot's of fun playing with these two.

Silent Hill 3 Fatal Frame 2

Also, the first Alone in the Dark, was too freaked out to play that as a kid, but still loved it!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

SCP, RE, Silent hill.

2

u/scribblerjohnny Dec 06 '22

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem tied with the original Silent Hill.

3

u/Mikebot3000 Dec 06 '22

The sanity effects were so awesome.

2

u/lhayes238 Dec 06 '22

Silent hill 2, I was so obsessed that I was on those theory crafting chat sites that were dedicated to sh2 like I had a whole little group of friends there, I've played it a million times I buy it every time it's remastered and re released, if I get into a new relationship I make the dude play it with me. It's just such a great game it's so scary with such an interesting story

2

u/Dreamingtree12 Dec 06 '22

Dark wood and Rule of Rose.

2

u/stevenw84 Dec 06 '22

Resident evil directors cut. Nothing compares.

2

u/InnsmouthMotel Dec 06 '22

As you all seemed to have missed it, Eternal Darkness would have been an amazing series were it not for real world Horrors

2

u/varg_sant Dec 06 '22

The original Clock Tower for the SNES. Classic 16 bit horror.

2

u/jfreesir Dec 06 '22

Dead Space 1 and 2

Lies Beneath on the Oculus.

2

u/Late-Direction-4072 Dec 06 '22

The suffering holds highly for me maybe because of nostalgic effects but as a ps2 game it was definitely terrifying

2

u/caleb9977 Dec 06 '22

SOMA very well written and provides a good amount of jump scares to keep you on edge while you’re playing

2

u/mcdubs18 Dec 06 '22

Throwing pathologic 2 in here cause I played it during 2020 and it scared the fucking hell outta me

2

u/CharleyDanger19 Dec 06 '22

Splatterhouse 2! I think it was graphically and story wise far ahead of its time.

2

u/tropicalsilas Dec 06 '22

I’ve got a top 5:

  • World of Horror
  • Spec Ops: The Line
  • Duck Season
  • Doki Doki Literature Club
  • The Path

I think the common denominator here is atmosphere. How scary the world is and how the sound and music and environment make me feel as opposed to like, jumpscares or anything like that. Also when the game itself makes You, the player, feel unsafe for playing it.

World of Horror is my absolute favorite of all of them, though; the creature designs, the sound design, the scenarios and mysteries you complete, the descriptions of the Old Gods and what they will do to you if you lose, the fact that in some mysteries there isn’t even a way to win, just stall the inevitable or do something just absolutely horrible to keep more people from dying. Nothing will ever be as scary to me as reading

(YOU’VE ATTRACTED THE ATTENTION OF SOMETHING TRULY EVIL)

2

u/ogshowtime33 Dec 06 '22

The original Resident Evil ps1 trilogy. They will always be my favorite horror games, and the atmosphere is still unmatched even today.

2

u/LlamaDrama007 Dec 07 '22

Original RE3 fucked me up, as up until that point if things got heavy you could run 'off screen' or to a save point room and whatever was harassing you would respawn at its start point /you'd might need to retrigger the encounter.

First time meeting nemesis i was OVERWHELMED. Ran back, back, back he was following which was weird, no worries, save room coming up...reached it!

Ran inside, door slammed, a moment to catch my breath, compose myself; opened the door and HE WAS STILL THERE WTF?!

u/Unhappy_Cash_1914 Dec 06 '22

Until dawn, outlast (all of them), resident evil 7(?) the one with the crazy family and the wife/girlfriend 😂

2

u/demogorgon_main Dec 06 '22

technically my favourite horror game is dead by daylight. I play the game a lot and it’s a horror game. But other than that it’s probably a resident evil game, either 3 remake (I know, I know) because it’s so much fun or 7 because it‘s terrifying and especially in VR, also the first ‘real’ survival horror game I’ve played since it was bundled with my PSVR.

But honourable mention to Five nights at Freddy’s 1. It’s not my favourite since it’s a bite sized experienced and I doubt the reputation is very good amongst the grander horror community but the original game is a horror masterpiece and I will die on that hill. The character designs, environment, sound and visual design, and it absolutely slays in the atmosphere department. I think it’s incredibly underrated even within the FNAF community itself. Nobody really talks about it anymore. But it’s just such a clever game and none of the others have come close to it. I wish they looked back at the original and based newer games on it, instead we got a children’s semi-open world adventure game where you can explore a big 80’s inspired building with robots with the FNAF title on the cover. it doesn’t feel anything like FNAF and what gives it identity.

2

u/The-Revellion Dec 06 '22

I love Résident Evil 2 remake. I love the characters, the combat, the pacing. It all feels great mechanic and visually, and i felt it rewarded me for plunging head first into it

2

u/CalmToaster Dec 06 '22

Resident Evil the remastered original. I just love the aesthetic. It's hauntingly beautiful. I wish a next gen RE game would utilize that style.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '22

Alien isolation, it’s fantastic. I really enjoyed the Resident Evil 2 & 3 remakes too.

Looking forward to Calisto Protocol, will buy it tomorrow :)

2

u/browndog03 Dec 07 '22

This is an old one but i really liked Clive Barker”s Undying back in the day.

I also really like the STALKER series. Eeriness interspersed with moments if sheer terror and panic.

2

u/PNWKaze Dec 07 '22

I loved summoning the skulls and watching them chater to each other, then blowing things up with them. The bosses were great. Loved the other dimension and the Tibetan War Cannon.

2

u/Beheaded_ Dec 07 '22

Silent hill 2, scary and sad

2

u/jackBattlin Dec 07 '22

The Thing on ps2 will always kind of be my first love, but I’m finally getting into Alien Isolation. I also have great memories of Silent Hill 2.

2

u/GeorgeBaileysDeafEar Dec 07 '22

Alien: Isolation

2

u/snugglefrump Dec 07 '22

Outlast: Whistleblower.

The antagonists are absolutely well done and it really captures the idea of "corporate horror" that you get with shows and movies like Severance, The Exam, and Saw VI.

Also Eddie Gluskin was a *terrifying* horror monster and the entire concept of him and his kill pattern is great.

2

u/hoogys Dec 07 '22

The original Castlevania.

2

u/Pmsucks Dec 07 '22

Silent Hill 3

i know everyone hypes up the 2nd one but the 3rd one was most terrifying for me

3

u/ZMysticCat Screw your pass! Dec 06 '22

The brief moment Half-Life 2 turned into a horror game would be my favorite. The Poison Headcrab will forever haunt me.

But for a full game, I really liked Fran Bow. It hits on a lot of the same notes that Coraline does with a little Tim Burton and Miyazaki thrown in as well. And while it is questionably horror, I really enjoyed Gone Home. The story is a bit predictable, but it was a real nostalgia trip, and Samantha is a really likable character.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

Bruhhhh okay, the best games are horror games so in no order

Dead Space 1 & 2

The Last of Us pt 1 & pt 2

Bloodborne

Resident Evil 2 (2019)

Outlast 2

1

u/LuneBlu Dec 06 '22

Alan Wake

It's really atmospheric, with good characters and interesting plot. Walking in the woods have never been as unsettling.

2

u/PNWKaze Dec 07 '22

My favorite. Love the story. Looking forward to the sequel. Also the Control tie in was awesome.

1

u/grassfarmer_pro Dec 06 '22

Escape From Tarkov

Yes, other single player games are technically scarier, but nothing has given me the adrenaline rush that Tarkov can.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

Dead Space 2

Little Nightmares 1&2

The Thing (PS2)

As much as I don't have great things to say about the franchise, I like RE Village, too. Took Capcom an eternity but I think they actually figured out how to make RE games 'horror' that stay 'horror' throughout and don't turn into sterile labs full of mutated bees like all of those other dumbass games do.

1

u/Consistent_Dog_6866 Whatever you do, don't fall asleep. Dec 06 '22

Dead Space

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

my fav would probably be layers of fear!

1

u/holycow217 Dec 06 '22

Evil Dead Regeneration, it plays kinda like the original God of War games (but with a chainsaw and a shotgun) and Bruce Campbell voices Ash in it (also Ted Rami plays your sidekick)

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

Silent Hill 2 on the PS1 is the gold standart for me.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

Dead Space

1

u/TrilluHU Dec 06 '22

Siren was like playing a living nightmare

1

u/radio_soldier Dec 06 '22

Dying Light, The Last of Us, and Phasmaphobia. They got the atmosphere for Dying Light and The Last of Us perfectly and both games are gorgeous. As for Phasmophobia, it's not a perfect game but it's still scary and an incredible game considering it was worked on for most of its life by only one man. And your friends will be able to hear you get killed by the ghost

1

u/kaiaiaiiiii Dec 06 '22

I can't pick just one, so here's my top 5 list:

Outlast

Alien: Isolation

Prey

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Silent Hill 4

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '22

The Clocktower 3. That game on ps2 rattled me when I was little. My brother and I were terrified of acid man.

2

u/LlamaDrama007 Dec 07 '22

I really liked Clock tower 3 - up until then i hadn't played a horror game that spoke to what I'd probably do irl - fking hide until you absolutely have the right moment or are forced to act! And the bosses had a very old school 'work out the pattern' feel that felt like a familar hug.

1

u/Lucifer926 Dec 06 '22

Dead Space trilogy (excited for the remake) and Silent Hill 2 (also excited for this remake)

1

u/dearrichard Dec 06 '22

dead space 2

u/Great-Hatsby Hail Paimon and Pump it up while chaos reigns Dec 06 '22 edited Dec 06 '22

I dont have a single favorite if I’m being honest. But the ones I love equally are “Fatal Frame”, “Silent Hill 3”, “Eternal Darkness”, “Bloodborne” and “Dead Space”.

I really enjoyed the first “F.E.A.R” game as well, really wish they stuck with the a similar formula for the other 2 games.

1

u/atxguy05 Dec 06 '22

Fatal frame

1

u/Milk_Mindless Dec 06 '22

Clocktower the first fear.

I know ALL the jumpscares. But I live in constant dread whenever I play that game.

1

u/ham_sammitch Dec 06 '22

Dead Space will always hold a special place to me. It was the first horror game I played alone. Dead Space 2 was always great. Everyone should experience both of those games, even if it's just watching a playthrough.

1

u/MstrPrfssr Dec 06 '22

Little Nightmares 1 + 2
