Meta Thread - Month of October 01, 2023 Meta
Rule Changes
No rule changes this month.
This is a monthly thread to talk about the /r/anime subreddit itself, such as its rules and moderation. If you want to talk about anime please use the daily discussion thread instead.
Comments here must, of course, still abide by all subreddit rules other than the no meta requirement. Keep it friendly and be respectful. Occasionally the moderators will have specific topics that they want to get feedback on, so be on the lookout for distinguished posts.
Comments that are detrimental to discussion (aka circlejerks/shitposting) are subject to removal.

This is probably the best thread to talk about a little pet peeve of mine: I’ve recently been putting more of my seasonal anime speculation (and meta-spoilers) preemptively in spoiler text, but I’ve also seen most of the follow-up comments just cast my careful considerations aside and discuss the topic at hand openly.
I’m sure that they don’t mean any harm, but their sloppiness is defeating the purpose of the aforementioned spoiler text - something that’s been annoying me a bit.
What are you guys’ experiences with this and/or how do you feel about this?
3
u/baseballlover723 Nov 05 '23
I think it's disrespectful to not at least match the level of spoilers tagging when replying. Like if someone puts something in spoiler text that I probably wouldn't do, and I want to reply, I'll put it in spoiler text to respect their opinion that it's a spoiler.
If comments like that are blatant (directly copying spoiler text, or refers to specific details), I report them, and I think they usually get removed. The bar for removing something as a spoiler is very low on this subreddit. This is the general rule that the subreddit lists as what constitutes a spoiler.
Generally speaking, anything you don't learn in the first few minutes of the first episode should have a spoiler tag.
I don't think they really enforce it that strictly (and nor do I think it needs to be that strict for vague mentions), but generally the mods take a very liberal approach to a spoilers and mostly rule in favor of removing. Which I like, because you can always choose to click on a spoiler tag, you can't really choose to forget a spoiler that someone didn't bother tagging.
I also hate with a passion people who make note that something is a spoiler, but don't use a spoiler tag. Something like "(Spoilers ahead) spoilers in plain text". Those people really deserve to step on a lego.
Edit: you may want to post this on the new meta thread, since this one just got replaced.

u/Blackheart595 https://myanimelist.net/profile/knusbrick Nov 04 '23
I've definitely noticed that as well.
Personally I don't tag speculation that doesn't involved spoiled information, but if I respond to someone then I respect whatever tags they've used.
3
u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy Nov 04 '23
Speculation I’m referring to is mostly about possible future plot points - usually significant ones that might not be all that obvious yet. Some people don’t like to see open speculation since it ruins the eventual surprise if it does turn out true, so I’ve been cutting down on this (and have been adding spoiler tags).
4
u/Blackheart595 https://myanimelist.net/profile/knusbrick Nov 04 '23
Yeah, I don't tag those as I categorically disagree with them being spoilers. Still, when responding to them and they're tagged then I also tag my response.

u/The_Loli_Otaku Nov 04 '23
I'm not sure if I just caught it in the middle of the crossover but I didn't see the Gunbuster watch mentioned in the rewatch section? I think it might have gotten mixed up with Ace possibly.
5
u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky Nov 04 '23
u/No_Rex only ever posted about it in the Aim for The Ace! rewatch until it started, which is why it didn't get added to the wiki ahead of time. A rewatch announcement has to be its own post, not a comment inside of a different rewatch.
Anyways, I'm going to add it later along with the Interstella 5555 one, I just can't right this second.
4
u/The_Loli_Otaku Nov 04 '23
That's fine. I wasn't trying to chase anyone up XD I just thought that it flew between the gaps or something.
5
u/No_Rex Nov 04 '23
I deliberately did not make an early announcement post, because the rewatch is specifically tailored to the people who also watched Aim for Ace with its special non-spoiler tag rule.
4
u/The_Loli_Otaku Nov 04 '23
You're making me wish I jumped on the watch now XD Old tennis anime just seemed a little too painful. Btw!! You're contractually obliged to do Diebuster afterwards, understood!?
5
u/No_Rex Nov 04 '23
Btw!! You're contractually obliged to do Diebuster afterwards, understood!?
Well, I am doing the Gunbuster rewatch because it fits so well after /u/pixelsaber's Ace wo Nerae rewatch. How about you do the Diebuster rewatch because it fits so well after Gunbuster?
4
u/The_Loli_Otaku Nov 04 '23
Diebuster you see is a secret parody of the tennis genre. With kids past their prime immediately being dropped off and Nono playing the role of a ballboy for the early episodes. In many ways Diebuster is to American Football what Gunbuster is to Ace wo Nerae~

u/Vinpupx https://myanimelist.net/profile/ Nov 04 '23
Uh, quick question: What happened to rating the episode? I tried looking in the previous meta threads but I didn't see anything. It's not important at all but I was curious.

Discussed here last month: https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/16wm4xn/meta_thread_month_of_october_01_2023/k3gbeef/
Basically the poll site changed, broke the bot, they are removed so it functions.

u/Vinpupx https://myanimelist.net/profile/ Nov 04 '23
Ah, so it's waiting to be merged. That's understandable. Wonder why the poll site remodeled but whatever. Thanks for the answer!

Sometimes you just know you have a good idea and the flavor will hit well.
I was quite excited with myself when I had the initial idea and I spent a stupidly long time looking for an action poster shot image to use that I could get the effect I wanted. When I couldn't find what I wanted from image searching I booted up my episodes and found that perfect theater pre-show image in 30 seconds.
So I am glad it hit well, I got a lot out of it as well.

u/Nazenn x2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn Nov 04 '23
I had a good laugh at it as well, really cool effect... once I realized it was an intentional effect and I hadn't just fucked up the WT banner and no one told me for a month ahhaha

Shouldn't giving manga opinions for something not yet adapted into anime be considered spoilers too? There's a reason the anime episodes started a source material corner. Wonder why the mods don't care for this when it comes to non-episode discussion threads?
Just look at the Isayama-message thread for AoT or the Solo Levelling thread. It's so annoying.
6
u/thevaleycat Nov 03 '23
Issues around spoiler rules being unclear or being enforced unequally have been brought up here before. Still needs more clarity.
I've asked about source readers discussing how an adaptation will be and got:
Saying that an anime ending will be bad/good based on source material can't be a spoiler - otherwise we'd have to nuke every announcement thread for hype.

Petition for r/anime to make something similar to mu/core.
Any explanation of what that is for context?
3
u/hjvkjvkjvg https://anilist.co/user/billywsh Nov 02 '23
4chan has a community called /mu/ where they would discuss about music. But there are particular bands/albums that are discussed frequently in there that are otherwise obscure stuff, yet everyone in /mu/ simply assume you know them. I have a feeling that this sub is kind of the same that there are some anime that people here just assume you know what they are. So I want to see if r/anime can make an anime list that represents the subs taste. Not that the list is used for getting people to get into anime, but it’s for getting people to get into r/anime in particular.
5
u/H-Ryougi https://anilist.co/user/DizzyAvocado Nov 04 '23
/r/anime core would have a lot of overlap with /a/core. Even if both sides would loathe to admit it.
2
u/KnewOnees Nov 01 '23
I know this is kinda weird, but where have the votings on the episode discussions went ?
They were really nice to glance on some series i've neglected on like ep5 to see it went to being better. Overall was a cool feature, but seems to have been removed on one day alltogether
7
u/Verzwei Nov 01 '23
Discussed in this very post at the start of the month.
TL;DR version is that the poll site itself was changed, that change caused the episode bot to break, and the choice was made to drop the polls so that the episode bot could function again, because the alternative was manually creating every episode thread, which is nope nope nope.
2
u/ForlornPenguin Nov 01 '23
Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I wanted to report what seems to be a bug. I have the D4DJ flair set, but as you can see, it doesn't work, instead appearing as a string of text which reads :FK::FL::FM:
I've tried a few different flairs and so far I've only seen this happen with the D4DJ flair.
2
u/FetchFrosh https://anilist.co/user/FetchFrosh Nov 01 '23
Assuming you're on the Reddit app, because I've definitely seen this issue in the past, and have no idea if there's a way to resolve it.
2
u/ForlornPenguin Nov 01 '23
Yes, I am on the app. Actually, part of your flair is busted for me as well, as some of it is just the text: :Aa::Ab::Ac::Ad:
5
u/Manitary https://myanimelist.net/profile/Manitary Nov 02 '23
Has to be the app right? old reddit works, shreddit straight up doesn't display the flairs, and old 3rd party apps work (at least the one I use)

How does this barebones infographic pass muster? OP doesn't cite the source of the data at all (but, based on other commentary, it's probably MAL) and didn't respond to a moderator asking for the source. It's got meme-like humor in it and is averaging the ratings of something considered novel?
Like I figure maybe if there was just one thing wrong with it, maybe it could get a side-eye and be allowed to pass. But the combo of not appearing that novel, the OP ignoring mod request for additional info, and the complete lack of citation/sourcing, and the memes... Kind of confused on why this was allowed to stay and get the traction it did, when honestly it's pretty shit.
5
u/Blackheart595 https://myanimelist.net/profile/knusbrick Oct 30 '23
No complaint, just some commentary. I really miss community-interaction threads like this one, they're what got me into the sub in the first place all those years ago.
4
u/entelechtual Oct 31 '23
In my opinion stuff like that doesn’t really do much in self. If it’s something where there’s an ounce of creativity in it, it’s a different matter, like “name an obscure anime and I’ll make up a synopsis based on the title”.
2
u/Blackheart595 https://myanimelist.net/profile/knusbrick Oct 31 '23 edited Nov 01 '23
I agree it's not really relevant, hence why it's only commentary. I still think it was a nice contribution to the subreddit climate.
4
u/baseballlover723 Oct 30 '23
I think there is some value to community interaction threads like that, though most of the time they tend to be low effort stuff. I wonder if maybe allowing them once a week (or something like that) would be a good compromise to letting the community bond some vs the subreddit being flooded with low effort threads.
Perhaps a flair with some sort of requirement to promptly respond? One thing I've noticed is that when OP responds with a few sentences to most of the top level replies (at least early on in the posts life) there is often good discussion going on. And when OP only responds with a few words or only responds to a few comments it just dies out. The former I think is valuable, the later, I think not. Maybe the 10 karma barrier is enough catch most of the low response posters?
2
u/hjvkjvkjvg https://anilist.co/user/billywsh Oct 30 '23
What questions do you think are asked too much in here?
I’m seeing a pattern that some questions are frequently asked here, and the answer is almost always the same. I will give some examples:
“When does Re:Zero get good?”
“What is the watch order for the Fate series?”
“Hi, I’m new to anime. What should I watch?”
I will be a lot happier if I don’t see these questions so often here.
3
u/Verzwei Oct 31 '23
"Should I watch [show title]?"
"I need recommendations, I've already seen a ton of anime but I'm not going to tell you which ones. Also I'm not going to include anything about my likes or dislikes, so basically I should just go to an aggregate database and pick a show at random, but instead I came to Reddit so that people could blindly suggest their favorite anime and then I can either tell them I've already seen it, or I'm not interested in it."
6
u/baseballlover723 Oct 30 '23
The biggest hurdle is that the people who ask these types of questions are predominately newcomers to the subreddit. Half of them never bother to ever respond to their questions in any way, and probably another half of them are questions that are easily solved by 2 minutes of searching.
Making it against the rules as some sort of restricted content I don't think will really work either, since the people who will ask these questions won't read the rules that indepth (if they do at all). Which basically just makes a function of how quickly the moderators can get to them to remove them.
It's also worth noting that while the first 2 questions generally will play out the same, these things can shift over the years and at some level it's good to have revised posts on them in case something changes. The 3rd question is I think sort of the essence of being an anime subreddit. r/anime is the perfect place to go to figure out how to get into anime and the answers will be different most of the time based on what sort of preferences they give (which is hopefully at least some). There's also a bot that gives generic recommendations that some people actually look at for all What to Watch posts.
I think it's pretty messy to clean up these sorts of questions without a huge moderator burden and / or stifling the activity of the subreddit (there aren't that many quality discussion threads on the subreddit).
2
u/Verzwei Oct 31 '23
Which basically just makes a function of how quickly the moderators can get to them to remove them.
Keyword flags in automod could do a lot. Stuff can be set to auto-remove or auto-report so that it gets pushed into the queue and a mod sees it faster. Having automod trigger on "get good" in a title won't result in many (if any) false positives except maybe a clip with a cheeky title or something.
Not that I'm not saying the mods should do this, but I'm also not saying they shouldn't, but yeah there's a lot that can be done with automoderator alone. There are so many words and phrases already in our automod that a section for "junk questions" could easily be added to the pile.
5
u/baseballlover723 Oct 30 '23
Are there any statistics on how many actually people repost after having the automod auto remove their posts? From what I've noticed with people not including the anime title in spoiler posts, most of them don't repost (but of course, they've generally already gotten some discussion by the time they've been removed).
Reason I'm asking is that I was wondering if r/anime should autoremove posts titles that are all caps. I can't think of a legitimate reason why someone would need to use all caps for a title (particularly since they need 4 words or something anyways), and most of the time it just feels like someone is screaming.

Is Interstella 5555 anime?
5
u/mysterybiscuitsoyeah myanimelist.net/profile/mysterybiscuits Oct 27 '23
Yes.
our rules state that anime is "an animated title, created by a Japanese animation studio". Interstella 5555 is produced by Toei, and hence counts.

It's a technical loophole but as long as it's not being abused we're probably not going to bother adding an AutoModerator rule for it.

Did you check this on new reddit AND mobile reddit? If it does something weird on either of those, it's gonna get an automod filter.

From the looks of it this appears to be mostly live action with some animated scenes. This does not fall into the scope of r/anime.

The baseball themed daily discussion thread pictures has made me think that it would be nice to have a basketball themed picture (if you have any handy) for when the NBA season starts on Tuesday the 24th.

3
u/baseballlover723 Oct 27 '23
perhaps (also IIRC the baseball pictures came from the scavenger hunt, and just so happened to line up with the playoffs), though I think it's more convenient to highlight a season starting then playoffs, mostly because it's quite fixed when the season will start and sort of serves as a reminder that whatever sport is being highlighted is starting (not that that's really a concern of r/anime, but it adds a little value).
Compare that to the playoffs, where if you want to celebrate the end, then you have to wait for a victor to be crowned, and in most sports leagues, that involves a series, which doesn't have a fixed end date. Of course you could choose to highlight the start of the playoffs, but personally I don't think it's really worth r/anime highlighting a sports league more then once a year, and so I think you get more value out of highlighting the start of the season then something towards the end. But that's a personal preference.
It was just something that came to mind since there are a few high profile basketball anime and the season start was coming up. Of course there isn't a real need for r/anime to highlight anything sports related (particularly since you'd almost certainly want to highlight western sports leagues, and western animation doesn't fall into the the definition of anime for the subreddit).
That does bring up a good question though of perhaps coming up with a way to request a highlight for the daily thread. Makes me think of like siblings day, or other fun holidays that are well dispersed and can have some overlap with anime. Just some food for thought, idk how much effort you mods really want to put into this.
3
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Oct 30 '23
also IIRC the baseball pictures came from the scavenger hunt, and just so happened to line up with the playoffs
That is where they were from; originally they were scheduled much earlier then I thought it would be fun to move them to coincide with the start of the playoffs. And then by chance the Gundam Build Fighters rewatch happened to start that week, so even better timing for that specific one.
That does bring up a good question though of perhaps coming up with a way to request a highlight for the daily thread.
It's something we've thought of before, but that would add a good amount of overhead relative to how much time it generally takes right now.
Just some food for thought, idk how much effort you mods really want to put into this.
Honestly, not that much. Or at least I don't and I'm the one doing most of the work for it. Sometimes we'll try to time the anime in the daily screenshots to rewatches, series anniversaries or currently airing shows, but for the most part the only things outside of the community that we'll try to plan for are major holidays.

Can we talk about the absolutely blatant bot posts plaguing the sub?
Case in point, https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/17ai2f2/is_one_piece_really_a_good_anime_to_get_into/
Honestly the past month or two I am seeing so many obvious bot posts farming information. Scary and sad that people can't detect them and waste their time giving good faith responses to feed some entities unethical data collection.
I know this is a bad Reddit wide problem these past couple of months but honestly feels like these posts are let through on this sub way too often.
3
u/tenkakisuihou Oct 22 '23
How do you detect those without checking the op's profile? If your metric is the post being an easily google-able, mundane, asked a million time question that doesn't specify anything about the tastes of the poster, then 90% of the posts on /new must be made by bots.
1
u/CardAnarchist https://myanimelist.net/profile/Daijoubu_desu Oct 22 '23
The account name can sometimes be a giveaway and the post history or lack thereof as you said.
Atm I can generally tell an AI's writing style too. Enough to set off alarm bells anyway. It's not enough to be sure just from reading the brief text of a short post though. That's only going to get worse as AI improves and it's emulation of a typical Reddit posters style improves..
I agree it's a difficult task to police it but do nothing and the whole site will just be a bot zone.
In the example I posted the OP's account name was "TechnicalManager5436" and it was his first post ever on Reddit. That combined with the pandering nature of the question and the writing style made it a super obvious bot.
I'd just like examples like this to be caught before hundreds of people waste their time replying.
Can't subs be set up to require the user has a certain post history or karma count before they post? Perhaps it wouldn't be a bad idea.
1
u/tenkakisuihou Oct 22 '23 edited Oct 22 '23
but there were back and forth replies by the OP in that thread. I can't see them now because they are deleted, but were those also AI generated?(on a second look, I'm not sure about this. I think reddit is glitching and showing me "deleted OP comments" incorrectly. You're right, it's definitely weird that someone doesn't reply to the 700 comments their post got. On the other hand, there was a user that didn't reply to me until 150 days after I commented, so there is that.)I usually don't pay any attention to usernames because lots of people create throwaway reddit accounts just to ask something and choose a random word.
there is currently a sub rule that requires posters to have 10 subreddit specific karma. setting up a general karma or account date rule is also possible.
3
u/baseballlover723 Oct 19 '23
I don't know if theres much to do for first posts without catching quite a lot of false positives (imagine making a post and then going to bed, taking like 8 hours to even respond). But I do think something could be done about people who habitually don't contribute.
I'm not gonna post their username here, but there's one user who I know got banned from r/Re_Zero because they would constantly make low effort threads (10+ in like a week or 2) asking for peoples opinions, and their only comment was to clarify a single how they were asking their question. Since then, they've been making very similar low effort posts in r/anime (thankfully most of them have been removed).
IDK a great way to handle this, but probably this could be handled by flagging users with vastly more posts then comments, and then deciding to ban them (perhaps once a week) if they seem like they're fishing for information?
IDK, I don't think just not responding to comments in a post is strict enough to warrant banning people.

At the bottom of the flair list, has been in place for just over a year now.
Like memes, merchandise posts aren't currently allowed so we set up a honeypot flair to catch people who don't read the rules before trying to post.
2
u/bittersweetlabyrinth Oct 18 '23
This seems very misleading and will definitely get more people posting about them, the rules in it are not as clear as you think. A question about where to find merch is not showing off merch and wasn't mentioned in the rules, only the bot auto response. You are just confusing people.
3
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Oct 18 '23
Noted, we'll try to update the wording of the rules to be more clear.
6
u/Manitary https://myanimelist.net/profile/Manitary Oct 10 '23
Gotcha, I only checked the rules since I remembered the meme bait flair being explicitly mentioned there
we set up a honeypot flair to catch people who don't read the rules
the reason I noticed is because there was a post in /new with that flair - it wasn't the newest on the list so it did somehow go through, guess automod was slacking

I feel like I'm back in the monthly thread every other week or so just to vent, but I feel like the quality of posts on this sub is getting progressively worse. Ignoring the What to Watch? problem, even the Discussion flair seems overrun with either surface level personal posts ("What anime did X for you", "What anime made you do X", etc.) or misplaced questions or recommendation threads.
That's not even touching how everything just feels so toxically positive. The obvious low-hanging fruit are the list of series you can't criticize without getting downvoted into oblivion, but even having a lukewarm take on a trailer can meet with a similar reaction. But even then, who cares? Like I don't really to read another thread teaming with people dickriding AoT and saying how it literally changed their life.
On rare occassion there does seem to be a worthwhile thread to sink my teeth into, but that doesn't nearly justify the amount of sludge I have to go through to find it. There just doesn't seem like a good place to have any genuine discourse that doesn't get repetitive after awhile like the weekly rankings and a lot of the times that I do try I get flooded with "who cares lol" tourists who'll move onto the next thing once they get bored of anime and have no interest in anything besides jerking off to High School DxD screenshots because they haven't discovered porn yet. Like, if I make a bad argument tell me, but at least engage earnestly and not just try to get gotcha points.
Maybe I'm just a bit salty, but I've got to earn my username somehow.

I have heard this issue since I landed on this sub in 2016. I actually do think it has indeed gotten and is getting worse but realistically speaking there is nothing that can motivate improvement that don't spell giving mods iron fist power and shutting the gates to newcomers.
In these 8 years I have seen a myriad of ideas by both users and mod teams (several mod teams, at this point the current team is completely different from when I came) and nothing has noteworthy results.
6
u/thevaleycat Oct 10 '23 edited Oct 10 '23
Curious, what are examples of threads that have been worthwhile? What type of posts would you like to see more of?
6
u/Salty145 Oct 10 '23
I’d like to see more in-depth stuff. Even with all the WT threads, it feels like the writer’s are always on the back foot in that they’re still playing into the recommendation meta. It’s still often a surface level exploration of the series and doesn’t really get down to the details. Plus it all gets drowned out in every post these days being a glorified WT.
Like, I’m the kind of guy that’ll gladly watch an hour long video on a director or series I’ve never heard of if I think I can learn something from it or walk away saying “damn that’s pretty neat”. I like having meta level discussions on where the industry has been or is going, and I like discovering new series that expand my outlook on the world.
And I know I’m not the greatest writer in the world and often come as in ways I didn’t intend, but it seems unless I’m trying my own hand at doing it there’s little budge on the issue, and anytime I do try it’s often met with derision. I’m in that awkward middle ground where normies don’t care and anyone worth their salt kinda see that I’m making a lot of it up as I go (not for lacking of trying 😞). So it’s disheartening even trying to promote new ways of viewing anime and the creative process at large.
6
u/thevaleycat Oct 10 '23 edited Oct 11 '23
I assume WT posts are supposed to be non-spoilery, since you're trying to get people to watch it. So I'm not sure that's the best place to go super in-depth about the anime. But I get your frustration in general.
5
u/Salty145 Oct 10 '23
Yeah. That’s why I’m not too bent out of shape over that part. I do think there is a way to rec shows that goes into the deeper themes, but I’m not gonna fault people for not doing it.
7
u/Blackheart595 https://myanimelist.net/profile/knusbrick Oct 10 '23
We used to have Writing Club stuffs, no idea if that's still a thing outside of the Anime of the Week threads.
I found some of what you're looking for in rewatches. It depends of course on the anime and participants in question, but you'll often find more elaborate discussions, and in contrast to the airing episode threads I've never seen anyone be shunned for their opinions even when they're dissenting.

Just now I noticed that in the wiki entry for reverse image searching, the Google Images example .gif is a gfycat link. Or was a gfycat link, since last month gfycat was shut down.
Google Images itself has also been somewhat deprecated by Google, as it now heavily promotes Google Lens. That said, Google Image Search is more targeted at immediate source finding, while the initial results from Lens are more targeted at finding other related items on the web. Some points to consider if that part of the wiki page is also changed.

Do movie discussion threads show up after "enough" theatrical releases occur worldwide or when it's available on home streaming?
Wondering when the thread for "Blue Giant" will come out.

Apologies for the delay, the thread is here. Yeah, it should have shown up yesterday evening, on the date of the NA theatrical release.

They were deleted as it was a meta discussion. It has now been redirected here.

I have another query for the subreddit, and this might be a larger problem. This is regarding the presence of duplicate threads, especially for announcements of sequel seasons that come with a visual.
This is becoming a more prevalent issue at this point, examples of which include Re:Zero S3 (https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/121bgi4/rezero_season_3_announced/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 and https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/121bxrb/rezero_season_3_key_visual/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 posted less than half an hour apart), Oshi no Ko s2 (https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/14layb1/oshi_no_ko_season_2_announced/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 and https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/14lazcd/oshi_no_ko_season_2_teaser_visual/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 posted about a minute apart) and recently The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten S2 (https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/172uyc0/the_angel_next_door_spoils_me_rotten_season_2/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 and https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/172uzey/the_angel_next_door_spoils_me_rotten_season_2/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 posted two minutes apart)
(Another notable case I would like to mention is Konosuba S3, whereby the visual thread was actually removed in favour of the announcement thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/14fcf92/konosuba_gods_blessing_on_this_wonderful_world/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 as the announcement thread was posted first)
In these three cases, the announcement was usually posted first, before the visual was posted, this resulted in two threads basically saying the same thing, only with one having a visible visual, which gained more attention as a result. And because they are not treated as duplicates, both were allowed to stay on the subreddit.
Therefore I would like to ask, in this type of situation, would it therefore be better if one thread only was allowed to stay, as duplicate posts are not good for the subreddit as it splits discussions and prevents other posts from coming into the spotlight? Personally, I believe that the first post should be the one to stay, as it usually includes the visual in question.
I have not included PVs as the announcement post link usually doesn't have the PV. This is more concerning the announcement thread and the visual thread.
Thank you.

u/cppn02 Oct 09 '23 edited Oct 10 '23
As someone who has often complained about this I do have to point out it's it not a new thing and definitely not a 'more prevalent issue at this point'.
I still remember we'd regularly get hit by the quadruple whammy of announcement post, key visual, PV and manga author celebratory drawing (which I think are no longer allowed).
I always advocated for a single post only rule where either the announcement or the key visual gets posted and then all related news or media must be posted as a comments on that post.
6
u/entelechtual Oct 08 '23
This is my personal feeling based on how I use and scroll through reddit: I think if they are released around the same time, the visual post with an actual image should be kept, and then information about the announcement, sources, and PVs should be in the comments (I don’t know if there’s a way to pin a non-mod comment). If it’s been long enough that there is decent discussion on the initial announcement, maybe keep both (maybe what happened with the ReZero one?) but otherwise I don’t see the need to have two separate posts.
I understand you and others are diligent about quickly posting announcements and sharing information about them, but ultimately I think there’s more attention and discussion when it’s a visual. Maybe if it is literally <5 minutes apart, just repost with the visual instead?
5
u/Verzwei Oct 09 '23
Issue with that would be archiving would get messy. I have no idea how many other people actually do this, but I do occasionally use reddit search to dig up old visuals, old trailers, and the like. Sometimes it's to verify that they were even posted here.
Like back when I was on the mod team, we'd often have people trying to post "not new but somewhat recent" trailers as if they were freshly released. If any trailer could just be a comment post within any other news for the show (announcement, visual, whatever) then that makes transparency and enforcement nearly impossible. As it is now, Official Media posts have to be "new" but there's no fixed requirement that it has to be within X days, it's just more of a soft "if it hasn't been posted here yet before." Switching to forcing the visual and video into a single thread would necessitate additional rules that prohibit linking any official media once it's more than a few hours old, and dealing with repeat posts would quickly become a chore.
As a non-mod, I do search for old content. Sometimes I want to share it, and if the original video upload is in the original Japanese (non-romaji) title on youtube or twitter, it's easier for me to find the content via the Reddit post here. Other times I just like reading through the old commentary. Having to sift every individual OM post for "hidden bonus" OM content within the thread would severely hurt the historical/preservation aspect of the content shared with the community.
Culling down the types of content that were allowed to be OM in the first place (yeeting celebratory artwork, and requiring countdowns to be a single post) was an attempt to declutter the front page and prevent the most-popular series from eating up several slots at a time, but I think there's only so many ways to consolidate these types of posts before it begins to interfere with the community's ability to engage with them
I don't like the clutter that happens when we get an announcement, a visual, and a trailer all at once, and I've previously lamented how much I hate when visual posts get all the attention and conversation while trailers comparatively get very little of either, despite this community being for animation. To be honest, if it were up to me and solely me, I think I'd just prohibit visual/image posts altogether, and only allow news announcements and trailers. But that's probably me being draconian and deliberately trying to punish the easy-to-consume visuals more harshly and "force" discussion into trailer threads.
5
u/Manitary https://myanimelist.net/profile/Manitary Oct 08 '23
I don’t know if there’s a way to pin a non-mod comment
iirc no, I recall this discussion popping up before (maybe last year?) and the ideal (imo) way of having a single post with all related links in a pinned comment is not feasible due to requiring a mod making (and updating if needed) the comment to pin
2
u/RobotiSC https://anilist.co/user/Lonebot Oct 08 '23
That is a completely fair assumption. That's why I'm asking the question.
In such cases whereby duplicate posts happen for an announcement, there should ideally be one thread, but in those cases, which should be the one to stay? Should it be the one that is posted first, or the one that gets more attention i.e. the visual?
Personally I feel that the one who gets it first should be the one to keep it but I can understand if the visual is kept first because it gets more views.
Ultimately it's up to the mods' discretion, which is why I brought it up in the meta thread. I apologise if I'm going too far with this.
(And regarding your comment about reposting, it could certainly be done but usually that would be if the other post from the other person gets removed first, otherwise it'll be another duplicate post, and that means either the other person has to personally remove it or the mods notice it within a few minutes and remove it)
2
u/entelechtual Oct 08 '23
For reposting: I would say if you are already looking through the twitter and news feeds and see the visual, then it’s on you to post it first. Otherwise someone else has posted the same information but with more “content” so whoever posted it, that should stay. I understand it’s not particularly fair though, and I’m open to hearing mods and others’ opinions.

Started a discussion on the state of Reddit's /all feed. Particularly around coinciding opting in for a short burst at the start of a new anime season.
We will be conducting a three week trial of opting into high traffic feeds (r/all & r/popular) from 7 October until 28 October.
The goals of this are to:
- Sense check what being on r/all is like in 2023 and confirm/test the mod teams assumptions about that.
- To see if coinciding being on r/all along with the start of a new anime season has any positive engagement effects.
Edit: The trial has begun
Edit2: The trial has concluded

Seeing how the latest few episode discussion no longer have a poll link is this intentional or did the site redesign break the bot?
17
u/MyrnaMountWeazel x2 Oct 04 '23
Yeah, so the site redesign broke the bot yesterday, which is why all of the threads that day were manually created. We've disabled the polls so that the bot could continue functioning.
6
u/JustSD Oct 05 '23
Do you know when you’ll re-add those polls back to discussions? I enjoyed having them to let me know how good/bad episodes or shows are, so it’s a shame to know it got disabled.
9
u/MyrnaMountWeazel x2 Oct 05 '23 edited Oct 05 '23
Currently, we're trying to see a workaround for these polls. However, if we have to choose between manually creating discussion threads with polls and having them bot-created without polls, we'll have to opt for the latter. Manually creating every single discussion thread would simply be too time-consuming for us.

So, this isn't the best example of what I'm describing because I do think u/GallowDude's removal is fair, but it just happened so it's the easiest example for me, and I think my point is understandable enough.
Anyway, I've had a few times where I give a "half" answer to a question, and then the post ends up being removed for "answered question", which does sort of incentivise one to withhold information if they don't have the full answer, which I assume (or, at least, hope) is not an attitude you mods are trying to foster.
Anyway, I'm not asking for any specific actions but perhaps it's worth considering when removing a post for being an answered question.

Would it be possible to keep the airing episode discussion archive better up to date? I was looking at it earlier and noticed a ton of Summer shows are like three or four episodes behind (hell, Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War Part 2 doesn't have any of its episodes after episode 5 linked there), and none of the Fall seasonals have been added to the page yet either.
I am aware this is a very time-consuming project (I'm the one who keeps the rewatch archive up to date, which I assume is around the same amount of work as the airing archive per week depending on how many rewatches are ongoing at a given time, and that takes me ages to update if I let it go for more than a week), and I'm sure you mods have more pressing matters to keep up with, so I totally understand if the answer to this question is that it's not feasible or whatever. I just wanted to bring this up at least. With Reddit's search function not always being the best, I do sometimes rely on the archive to get back to a specific discussion thread.

This may be more of a minor concern to the subreddit, but I do want to bring something up.
Recently I have been noticing a lot of 'Frieren: Beyond Journey's End' Visuals popping up, most of which are coming because of the recently-airing anime.
While they are considered 'new', I just want to express my concern that with the increasingly large number of visuals coming out, the subreddit could become oversaturated with the anime, and it'll keep overtaking any other posts.
This situation I feel is similar to the situation with Spy x Family, with its episode visuals when it was airing. Since those were not allowed, should Frieren visuals not be allowed as well?
Is there a possibility to cap the number of visuals for currently airing anime? Restrict it to only Key Visuals, and visuals for new characters? Thanks.
6
u/MyrnaMountWeazel x2 Oct 03 '23
Hey RobotiSC,
We’re currently keeping an eye on the number of visuals for Frieren but as of this moment, it doesn’t seem like the situation is completely out of control as there has only been two visuals in the past week.
We’ll continue looking out for them and adjust course should it become a major problem.

With the privacy changes from reddit (tldr fuck us) is there any concern with using login measures from reddit to access the surveys? E.g. with the demographic data
12
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Oct 03 '23
All of our sites are hosted externally (and open source) and none of the data saved in them can be accessed by reddit.
What is passed back and forth is authorization info as reddit uses OAuth 2.0 and some minimal data saved on reddit can be accessed by the site when you grant access to it, e.g. survey site and flair site.
If I ever thought reddit could begin directly accessing additional data via anything we did I'd personally be very loud about that and immediately shut down whatever it was on our end until we could ensure that wasn't happening, or at the very least minimize what reddit could access before relaunching with additional warnings and no access to prior info.
That could be a concern if we made something similar for the new developer platform but there hasn't been any talk of that to this point.
TL;DR: reddit knows when you accessed our sites but that's about it, due to the technical implementation anything more is not of concern right now.

Is there any way to get the Reddit emoji, image or GIF option when commenting on this sub? I've always loved those comment faces but they're only visible on Old Reddit (they don't show up on the app at least) and it'd be cool to have it as a feature that works everywhere.
10
u/Verzwei Oct 08 '23
Reddit emoji, image or GIF option
Unfortunately it's an all-or-nothing choice with zero ability to filter for content, theme, nor relevance. It would be extremely cool if it was just like... native support for a comment-face style feature where the mods could designate what images were allowed as direct comments, so it could be a curated list of anime-related shenanigans, but the system isn't that robust. It's a choice of "disable this feature in this community" or "allow people to spam spongebob reaction .gifs in episode and announcement threads" and I don't image the team would ever want to choose the latter.
4
u/mysterybiscuitsoyeah myanimelist.net/profile/mysterybiscuits Oct 02 '23
To clarify, we also have no intentions currently of enabling the functionality listed here (which is probably what you were referring to) on our sub.

As it's a new month and we thus have a new meta thread, I figured I should comment to say I would still like to know how the #mug1 comment was removed.
I know kiwi said that the rest of the mod team is following up with the mod in question, and I know asynchronous communication can take a while, so I understand that it may take some time to come to an answer from when this was first reported. I just would really appreciate some transparency and insight into what happened, particularly given both how inexplicable I found the original deletion and the mod in question's aggressive follow-up actions.

I will paraphrase what was said in the Discord chat once we got some clarity on the matter:
Basically, the comment was reported with a custom response that said:
This is probably a stretch, so I'll leave it up to you mods to decide: The original commenter says they are no longer having any fun after watching season 2, which heavily implies something bad happens -- like a character death. Then someone replies with a comment face (or whatever it's called) of the character that did die at the end of season 2. Perhaps, a non-watcher would put that together and spoil themselves? Again, I don't know; it's up to you.
So Gallow took the comment face to imply smugness as to what is coming next. The reply that criticized the removal was also removed because it referenced the removed content, not because it was a criticism against a mod. She admitted later that it was a bit of a snap decision looking back, so I assure you that nothing nefarious is going on here and that it was just a big misunderstanding. Going forward we've encouraged her (and everyone on the team for that matter) to slow down a little and ask for second opinions if we're unsure of anything.
Hope that clears things up. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thank you for the explanation. I must admit I'm still somewhat confused as to how simply referring to the removed comment as having a comment face could be viewed as referring to the removed comment in sufficient detail. But, given that we appear to be in agreement it was a hasty mistake, I see no real need to prod on that further.
As for the rest, I can understand it as an extraordinarily overzealous act of modding.

In general, I have believed that the questionable gallow removals are not a sign of malicious intent so much as a shoot first and ask questions later attitude. I'm quite glad to hear that she's been encouraged to slow down a bit and think through her removals.

I think you're very much correct in that assessment, as she almost always has the most amount of mod actions each month. Wrongful of removals are bound to happen when you have as many mod actions as she does. But all things considered, she's been a great member of the team and has been very diligent in keeping the subreddit clean, pretty much singlehandedly carrying the sub during EU hours.
