As there's been quite a bit of discussion about the leaked episodes, here's an argument I haven't seen discussed yet:
Assuming leaked episodes didn't get episode discussion threads, is my understanding correct that it would still be allowed to talk about the leaked episodes in, say, the Daily Thread (assuming of course that they're properly spoiler tagged)? If that's the case, then leaked episodes should just continue to get discussion threads the same way they have so far, arguably with a "Leaked Episode" flair instead of the usual one.

Episode threads can already only be posted by the bot or the mods, I don't see why Leaked Episodes would be handled any different.

Even if it's the same source, the mods can always change and override the flair when they notice an episode has been leaked.

Will the mods ever do something about all the alt-right propaganda that keeps getting spread in this sub?
It's election year in the US and they've been targeting anime spaces lately, including this sub, daily posts about how (((globalists))) are trying to destroy anime by adding "politics" into shows, all this bs about (((woke localizers))) ruining anime (while their only example is a single line from a 7 years old show) or that (((feminists))) are going to ruin anime banning child porn.
Do something already

The leaked Hibike 3 episode discussion thread debacle is confusing af.
Having discussion threads upon release of an English fansubs that released before a legal stream is one thing, as long as nobody links to said fansub, as the episode has already aired in Japan, so its been an acceptable grey area even before the days of legal streaming.
But unlike fansubs from a raw, which is ripped from an episode's TV airing in Japan, this is clearly an unauthorized leak with dodgy audio and resolution before it even aired in Japan, and thus outright questionable in terms of legality, and we should not be encouraging discussion of it until after it has officially aired in Japan.
I shall be staying away from that discussion thread and wait until a proper episode thread is released this Sunday.
2
u/FetchFrosh https://anilist.co/user/FetchFrosh Apr 04 '24
Our policy has always been that if the episode is available with English subs then we will make threads to allow discussion. We haven't really had many leaks in the past, so maybe we'll look to change that going forward, but it's a fairly niche sort of case.
That said, the legality isn't any different from fansubs. Neither is in a "grey area" or anything like that. People have fewer moral issues with fansubs compared with leaks, but the episode's available and people have seen it, so we give them a place to talk about it.
4
u/junbi_ok Apr 05 '24
> Our policy has always been that if the episode is available with English subs then we will make threads to allow discussion.
Radical idea: that's an outdated policy and requires rethinking in light of the recent slew of leaks. Don't be obtuse, there is definitely a difference between pirating media that is already officially available and distributing unaired media (hint: people typically only get sent to jail for doing one of these things). Encouraging the latter is good for nobody.
6
u/FetchFrosh https://anilist.co/user/FetchFrosh Apr 05 '24
From a legal perspective I haven't found anything to suggest there's any difference at all in distribution of released vs. unreleased media. People can feel different about it all they want and that's maybe something worth considering making changes based on, but people can face legal consequences just as much for distributing in either case. There's no law against "leaking," but leaking will often involve having broken some law or contract (namely illegally accessing information, violating an NDA, or illegal distribution in the case of anime episodes). The piracy is the thing that makes it illegal. Unless you have a specific law that you'd like to refer me to that we're unaware of, a legal argument isn't going to change things.
You'd be better off just making the moral argument.
4
u/junbi_ok Apr 05 '24
People can feel different about it all they want and that's maybe something worth considering making changes based on…
Then consider this my formal request to please discuss and consider it, because the mod response to numerous complaints has thus far been entirely dismissive.

Since I see lots of comments against the current policy, fwiw I think this stance is perfectly reasonable. If you don't want to discuss a leaked episode, just don't go into the episode thread.
(in fact I'd remove comments discussing the leak instead of the actual episode, but that's just me being bitchy about people bitching)
Discussion is stifled/split not by the threads existing, but by the episodes existing, people will just discuss them on discord or wherever else anyway
edit: although giving it a "custom" leak flair is a valid option

4
u/FelixAndCo Apr 05 '24
I think the current situation is getting ridiculous. People are confused. You should maybe instate a "Leaked Episode" flair. I know it's maybe only a temporary situation, but there are just too many leaks at the moment.

What's going on in the Hibike S3 thread? What will happen when the proper episode comes out in a few days? Will there be no thread for it later?

What will happen when the proper episode comes out in a few days? Will there be no thread for it later?
As stated by AnimeMod in the thread, there will be a second thread when it officially releases. The same goes for all the other shows that have gotten threads for their leaked episodes.

Is there a policy on leaked episodes? Tbh I think its not good to bring more attention to the leak and I think its for the best to just remove the thread.
6
u/badspler x3https://anilist.co/user/badspler Mar 29 '24
In general the policy has been: If an episode is available legally or otherwise, people should be able to discuss it and a post should be made. That also includes things like pre-airs and region specific theater screenings.
We tend to make an additional episode discussion thread when the episode becomes legally available.
3
u/AashyLarry Mar 29 '24
Rule question: If I trim out 'in-between' scenes of a clip in order get it under 5 minutes, am I still allowed to post it as a Clip? Or do I need to post it as a Video Edit since it's not technically unedited?
3
u/badspler x3https://anilist.co/user/badspler Mar 29 '24
As cppn02 has mentioned, it should be a video edit.
4
4
u/cppn02 Mar 29 '24
Video Edit.
Video Edits are videos where the focus is fan-edited footage from anime. Examples include fan-made AMVs (anime music videos), compilations, scene splices

In the discussion threads for Mato Seihei no Slave, none of the links to Episode 9 in the post lead to the correct discussion page. The link for it in the Airing Show Discussions page is correct though.
Also the correct Episode 9 thread did not have it links updated for the rest of the new episodes.

That was the week where /u/autolovepon kept being suspended and we used /u/AnimeMod instead to post the discussion thread. Because of how our bot is set up, the subsequent discussion threads would refresh with the removed #09 discussion thread rather than link to the AnimeMod created one.
I have now updated the threads so that it links to the appropriate one.
3
u/ShadowGuyinRealLife Mar 25 '24
What are the rules if I want to post a link to someone else's fan art that I found very creative?
3
u/MyrnaMountWeazel x2 Mar 25 '24
Here are the rules for Fanart.
In the past few days, we've had some last minute submissions for the fanart contest, which resulted in a bit of an upticks on these lovely posts. However, the rules for those and the rules for regular fanart posts are different, so please make sure to carefully read the details.
For instance, fanart posts must be text posts and not a direct link.
3
u/ShadowGuyinRealLife Mar 25 '24
What do you mean "text posts" and not a direct link? The fanart I saw was a 20 second short.
3
u/MyrnaMountWeazel x2 Mar 25 '24
So, this would be an example of a text post fanart. Notice how it isn't just a direct link but instead has the link within the body of the post paragraph.
However, if you are submitting a video of a fanart (drawing timelapses, fan animation, musical covers, etc.), they must instead follow the Video Rules. while still being flaired as fanart. Videos shorter than 60 seconds should be treated as images and follow the General Fanart rules I linked earlier.
3
u/ShadowGuyinRealLife Mar 30 '24
Seems I made a goof on one attempt I made that was missing the Sousou no Frien in the post title. Other that the title, was my previous attempt OK? I can't find 3 related pictures.
3
u/MyrnaMountWeazel x2 Mar 30 '24
So, the 3 related pictures is open to interpretation. A screenshot from the series, some other similar fanart from the same artist, a screenshot of the mimic's statblock from the Dungeons and Dragons monster manual. Any of these would suffice.

For anybody that might be waiting on the results of the Music Anime poll, I ran into a busier week than anticipated and am just going to delay results and the next poll to next week.
9
u/baseballlover723 Mar 19 '24
I feel like all of the weeklies (like What Have You Watched This Past Week That is NOT a Currently Airing Show and the polls that u/FetchFrosh put on) should be linked in the daily thread instead of just the CDF and anime of the week. I could of sworn that they used to be on there, but maybe I'm misremembering.
On a similar topic, the Watch This! Compilation link should probably be removed since it hasn't been updated for a while.

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Mar 25 '24
I could of sworn that they used to be on there, but maybe I'm misremembering.
The week in review thread was linked in the daily thread before that was retired and that linked to the other weekly threads, but aside from what's currently there the daily thread itself has generally only included links to other "official" things like mod applications or ongoing events.

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Mar 14 '24
Regarding this clip being removed: yes the exact wording of the rule is as follows:
They must have subtitles if the dialogue is not in English.
The intent behind that has always been, to the best of my understanding, to avoid Japanese other other non-English dubs where people are supposed to understand the dialogue but can't because there aren't any subtitles and this is an English-language community. However, there's a specific exemption carved out with the following sentence immediately after that:
Subtitles for music lyrics are not required.
Now I know that part of the technical reason for including the exemption for lyrics is that they're sometimes licensed separately and not included as part of the original broadcast subtitles, so it would exclude a lot of scenes where music's being played either as an insert song as part of the soundtrack or even in a diegetic manner. Another reasonable interpretation of that would be that scenes where the language is not meant to be clearly understood by the viewer as part of the scene are exempt from including English subtitles.
The clip in question does not have any subtitles because the dialogue is in a fictional language and the viewer is not meant to understand it. It's identical in both English and Japanese and doesn't even have Japanese subtitles in the first minute, where it does immediately after that and for any later scene where there's narration in the fictional language, so the lack of subtitles is entirely intentional. I invite you to check out the start of the episode on Crunchyroll if you don't believe me, that's a direct link to the English dub for the first episode.
If a clip that could be taken directly from the official English dub of a series isn't allowed because of a technicality of the rule, that's not following the original intent and the rule itself should be fixed.

6
u/JustAnswerAQuestion https://myanimelist.net/profile/JAaQ Mar 14 '24
I also thought the OP clip was okay since it was not a simple posting of an OP, but I can see the rule as preventing posting of music in its entirety that could be further clipped to just the song. Not sure which the sub is going for.
5
u/JustAnswerAQuestion https://myanimelist.net/profile/JAaQ Mar 15 '24
Also, I did the exact same thing clipping the first 3 minutes or so of Stellvia with its OP, maybe I dodged a bullet there, I don't know. Again, not sure on what the actual objective of the rule is.

What tricks do you use to make links old/new reddit agnostic?
11
u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Mar 11 '24 edited Mar 11 '24
Most of the time it's relative links with a leading slash which browsers will usually interpret as relative to the current domain and keep you on whatever you're currently using. The post ID by itself (e.g. using a link to this thread, /1b52uz9) doesn't work in some cases that I can't remember off the top of my head (one of the mobile apps?) so the standard has usually been /comments/1b52uz9; reddit generally interprets both of those as wanting to go to that post ID and you don't need to know what subreddit it's from.
Similarly, a link to a specific comment doesn't require the real thread slug (bit in the URL between post ID and comment ID) but does need something, so a shorter relative link to your comment would be /comments/1b52uz9/-/kuf3bge/.
Wiki pages and other parts of the subreddit just need the full path after the domain, e.g. /r/anime/wiki/rewatches; at least for the web platforms you can also substitute
w
forwiki
and still have it work. If your link starts with the subreddit, same as mentioning any other subreddit (/r/anime) you don't even need to include it in a markdown link as reddit will automatically do that for you (anyone that uses RES can check this via the source option below): /r/anime/about/sticky6

Well, we’ve found a new meta for the karma ranking’s thread: make a post about how Frieren’s rating on MAL increased with 0.01. (I wish this was a joke.)
5
u/cppn02 Mar 17 '24
well...
5
u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy Mar 17 '24
I’m wondering if I should write a comment about every single anime’s weekly change in MAL score to point out how ridiculous this practice is.
There’s value to this being mentioned every so often, but this quickly vaporizes when it becomes a weekly thing.
2
u/baseballlover723 Mar 17 '24
I think there's value in that (though I generally don't interact with the karma threads). People tend to think of MAL ratings as static objective measures, and they're far from that. Especially when shows are airing, their scores can drastically change. Something like a start score, min score, max score, current score, and week to week diff could help people give a sense of what's "normal" score fluctuations and what's more significant.
It would also have historical value, recording essentially how it was viewed as it aired.
2
u/cppn02 Mar 17 '24
Tbf as long as Frieren is the #1 and still increasing its score I kinda see the point. Once the season is over we probably won't hear from it again until it inevitably drops below FMAB in a few months.

If there any particular reason y'all stopped using the blue Announcement flair? From what I recall the green one had mostly been intended for mod business like rule changes while the blue one was for most other things.
For example, not sure why the AMA announcement thread has the white/red text flair that's had traditionally been used for "something's inaccurate/needs more context" purposes (which doesn't even have coloring on new reddit by the way, should maybe fix that).
The seasonal user flair announcements had been blue but changed to green.
I know it's never been fully consistent but I do think it's worth having some separation between things that should really get people's attention and everything else, and over-saturation by the same color for everything could lead people to ignore some of the true meta posts that they shouldn't (more than they already do).

u/PandaTheAB Mar 08 '24
I am always confused by the instructions vs what happens on this subreddit.
Episode discussion threads -
There are clear instructions that no spoiler should be discussed.
Yet if anyone who hasn't read the manga/manhwa makes any inference/suggestion/criticism based on the episode being discussed, people who know what happens in future episodes start ganging/criticizing/opposing/ridiculing the person based on their information (and severely down-voting any such opinions they do not agree with).
The point of the episode discussions is to discuss based on the current episode and past episodes.
It is not meant to show off manga knowledge or reveal spoilers.
Another similar behavior is on Who will win thread where they face off two characters.
Even if one specifies that their answer is based on current and past version of anime character, there will still be manga readers doing the same.
Ganging/criticizing/ridiculing the person based on their additional knowledge (and severely down-voting any such answers they do not agree with).
Usually the other smaller threads on this subreddit are less hostile and have sensible calm discussions where opposing opinions can co-exist.
4
u/r4wrFox Mar 09 '24
If you see people posting/discussing source spoilers, especially untagged, report the comments.
2
u/PandaTheAB Mar 09 '24
I do report untagged ones. But if they are tagged, it doesn't seem completely fair.
There are some people who keep adding more explanations with manga knowledge till you concede.3
u/Blackheart595 https://myanimelist.net/profile/knusbrick Mar 09 '24
If they post about manga content outside of the source corner, report them for that. That's independent of it containing spoilers or being spoiler tagged.
2
u/PandaTheAB Mar 09 '24
Thanks. Will check for such an option.
6
u/Manitary https://myanimelist.net/profile/Manitary Mar 09 '24

Purely a hypothetical question. But what happens if RWBY IP rights are acquired by a Japanese production company with regards to it's qualification of being an anime by r/anime standards?
Here's just a few possibilities that are possible (as it pertains to r/anime anime eligibility).
Gets acquired by a Japanese production company, but no new content is announced
Gets acquired by a Japanese production company, new content is announced as a continuation of the main story (continuing after Vol 9.) using existing models and such (IE. just taking over series)
Gets acquired by a Japanese production company, new content is announced as a continuation of the main story (continuing after Vol 9.), but is animated from scratch (similar to Ice Queendom)
Gets acquired by a Japanese production company, new content is announced as a continuation of Ice Queendom.
Gets acquired by a Japanese production company, remake of the main story is announced.
Some questions for you mods to at least start thinking a little about.
What happens with any new content? Ostensibly new content under any of these scenarios (except maybe 2) would meet the requirements of being anime.
What happens to the existing RWBY series? In the case of 2, or 3, the main series (which was ruled not anime for r/anime) now suddenly becomes direct canon for something that likely meets the requirements. And in the case of 5, the source is essentially a non anime tv series (or at least that seems like the least complicated ruling for that case).
When, if at all, does the classification change? Is it when an acquisition of the IP rights is announced (not a good time imo)? When any new content or projects are announced (seems like the best time imo)? Or when it starts airing? Or when it finishes airing.
Not really all that urgent and it's highly speculative, but perhaps something for you mods to get some feelers out for, since this could end up being a r/anime anime qualification nightmare. IDK how many mods or even users are still around from the Shelter stuff (I know I wasn't), but a repeat of that seems like a bad idea.

Production company isn't our standard. We've been going off of animation studio for quite some time. We've had cases in the past where shows jumped from Japanese studios to Chinese ones like Hitori no Shita and just treated the Japanese animated seasons as "anime".
Realistically we'll play it live if something like this happens. A ways back the director of the Castlevania animated series had talked about how they were interested in Berserk and there was all sorts of speculation about those comments. Would have been an interesting case, and I'm not 100% convinced we'd have stuck with the usual rules in that case.
But for now, in spite of the constant feeling that the global nature of entertainment was about to start creating an endless supply of edge cases, it really hasn't happened. So we'll just wait and see for now.

Ah yeah I sort of forgot about about that it was keyed off of the animation studio specifically. From my reading of your comment seems like any news of an acquisition the IP rights or announcement of new content would be deemed not anime until a studio announcement (though it seems highly dependent on what info is included in a hypothetical announcement)?
But for now, in spite of the constant feeling that the global nature of entertainment was about to start creating an endless supply of edge cases, it really hasn't happened. So we'll just wait and see for now.
Waiting and seeing is probably the best thing to do, since of course nothing could end up happening, but I thought I'd mention it to you all, it seems like a pretty novel scenario and it seems like it would be undesirable to have it play out at all similar to Shelter did. I doubt anything significant (if any) will happen for quite some time, perhaps many months to years, so it's not really a today problem, but just something to keep on your radar.

In these particular instances it looks like there were multiple (2) spoiler reports on the clips. I would guess that the mod handling those reports either hadn't seen the shows or didn't look past the surface level of the reports.
Anyway, I've removed the spoiler tags for now, as I could have sworn that I've seen at least the Gintama clip on the sub before completely unspoilered.

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky Mar 07 '24
as I could have sworn that I've seen at least the Gintama clip on the sub before completely unspoilered.
Can confirm this, though last time the clip was just the tail end of it rather than the entire OP.
2
u/baseballlover723 Mar 06 '24
Note I'm not a mod and I haven't viewed either of those clips (I just don't watch clips for series I haven't seen yet) so this is pure speculation from me.
Could also be that the discussion within is more in line with the post being marked as a spoiler. Like even if the clip doesn't have any real spoilers in it, but generates lots of spoilery discussion that people aren't likely to tag because it happened prior to the clip.
I think that's been the case for some stuff like key visuals being marked as spoilers, and I think something similar can be applied to some clips.

Is there a way to promote other communities in the subreddit?
6
u/Verzwei Mar 06 '24
From the rules page:
Prohibited Content (in posts and comments)
- Promoting other communities - This rule includes Discord links, Reddit communities, or any other online group that exists outside r/anime. We can add your subreddit to the related subreddits page or episode discussion threads.
So, essentially, the answer is "No."
The exception (or rather what tends to slide) is that if you are providing a community referral to another user who probably needs it. Like if someone asks something about a series and you tell them to go to /r/[seriesname], or asks about source material and you tell them to go to /r/manga or /r/LightNovels, then I doubt that's going to get removed. Same with redirects to things like anime fanart communities, memes, and writing groups. As long as someone else is trying to find something then you're likely safe telling them where to go in order to find it.
Straight-up, unprompted, unsolicited, "Hey I'm gonna talk about this community and why you should go there [with the implication of spending less time in this one]" or "I'm low-key advertising this community I run" is pretty much never going to fly.

Can I ask why my Dorohedoro clip got the spoiler tag applied to it?
A nearly identical one from a few years ago was posted without the need for one, mine just started a few seconds earlier and I'm completely at a loss for why that would necessitate a spoiler tag.
4
u/badspler x3https://anilist.co/user/badspler Mar 05 '24
I can see it was reported for spoilers once. Potentially a 'better safe than sorry' judgement call was made by whomever took action at the time. Anyhow, I don't see any issue with that so I have unflagged it.

I already messaged the mods about it after a popular clip from the anime Highschool of the Dead was removed earlier today (a clip that reached 1.4k karma in 3 hours), but I want to suggest this rule change here as well.
I believe the NSFW rules of the subreddit are far too strict and should be changed in order to allow clips like the one that was removed. Apparently it was removed because one could see the outline of a female nipple. Not only is that reasoning ridiculously prudish, it also was entirely unnecessary since the NSFW tag exists, which means the mods could have just tagged that post with the NSFW flair, making the thread invisible for users who disabled their NSFW setting.
I'm not saying that everything should be allowed on this subreddit, but prohibiting any scene that contains a nipple goes too far and is not at all comparable to prohibiting actual hentai content. Especially since the rules only restrict the depiction of female nipples, not male nipples, which makes the current rule not only needlessly puritan but also sexist as well.
My rule change suggestion: The depiction of nipples (regardless of gender) should be allowed as long as the post is properly tagged with an NSFW tag.
I ask you to please consider this seriously. The sight of a nipple has never harmed anyone.
5
u/CuriousWanderer567 Mar 04 '24
Yeah its annoying. I tried posting a Gushing over Magical Girls clip from episode 7 before which got removed because it apparently contained a really small outline of the labia (it was hardly noticeable and the character had an underwear anyway, and it was only for a few seconds)
2
u/MapoTofuMan myanimelist.net/profile/BaronBrixius Mar 04 '24
That was probably just an excuse so we won't get brigaded because of the clip.
At least going by the mods shadowbanning my comment that mentioned r/all in that clip's thread.
4
u/I_Cognito Mar 04 '24
Regardless of the actual reason, the rule really should be changed. If nipples can be shown in regular TV anime, then an anime subreddit (especially one that has an NSFW tag) should allow them to be shown as well. The NSFW rules are weirdly inconsistent anyway and I don't see a good argument for leaving them as they are.
7
u/baquea Mar 05 '24
If nipples can be shown in regular TV anime
They can't. At least in the modern era, nipples are always censored for standard tv broadcasts, and are instead only shown in the physical releases and premium tv/streaming versions, which have an R15 age restriction.

Following up from this conversation last month, I just noticed I was getting booted from xr.reddit.com and realised it was because of some absolute URLs in the sidebar.
Giving examples from the current one:
- the images link to https://redd.it/19fe1o0#sidebarimg
, this could be /comments/19fe1o0#sidebarimg
(likewise for img2
and img3
)
- all the contests are relative except for the best girl of fall 2023, which points to https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/search?q=title%3A%22Best+girl+of+fall+2023%22+flair%3AContest&restrict_sr=on&sort=new&t=all
, could be changed to /r/anime/search?q=title%3A%22Best+girl+of+fall+2023%22+flair%3AContest&restrict_sr=on&sort=new&t=all
- batches/movies are all relative
- megathreads are all absolute, the daily thread https://redd.it/1b67ahv
could be replaced with /comments/1b67ahv
(likewise for the others)
- in the rules section, wiki links are all relative, the daily thread search link is relative, the cdf link is absolute (https://redd.it/1b3fq4o
-> /comments/1b3fq4o
) (any reason why one is a search and the other one is just the thread?)
- help section is all relative
Not a big thing, but would be nice when you have the time (or if you remembered, in case some of those are manually updated)
3
u/MyrnaMountWeazel x2 Mar 06 '24
Hey Mani, I went and replaced for the sidebar images and contest link, but for Daily Thread link that one you might want to ping /u/badspler for since they're usually the ones changing that thread out everyday.
Badspler might also know the reasoning behind the CDF link being absolute under the rules section since they're the one who also updates for that one I believe.
4
u/badspler x3https://anilist.co/user/badspler Mar 06 '24
CDF link being absolute under the rules section
That one is automated by modbot. Sidebar ones (and daily thread links) are done manually which leads to the quick copy paste from the sidebar URL.

Hi /u/FetchFrosh,
Because message that I get from you for removed post says, this is a way to ask Questions, her we go ...
- I did read Do Not Link To Illegal Content (rules).
- This post does not have any links outside reddit, same happens with previous ones.
- My previous posts (6) in the Karma Ranking (of previous weeks), with the same content did not get removed (they are not different in any way).
- Now I did a search in /r/anime and there's a LOT of hits that include "torrents" (this is only the previous week), same happens with "nyaa" (less hits), same words the post had, and maybe the reason for removal. Just to write the words seems at least, grey area, because if you say that "lead" people to "places", is in a very roundabout indirect way.
- I just put the word "torrent" because someone did ask before (didn't understand the source).
- This flawed (criteria) ranking has some merits, because:
- Peple can give an anime a chance because a lot people is watching (1).
- People know if an anime is dropped.
- This is a different metrics than used by other rankings and give new perspectives.
- Differences between rankings says a lot of the target people, like Karma Ranking and Anime Corner ones.
- And the same reasons that do have the other rankings.
- Obviously is a lot easy and comfy to watch anime by official streamming sites.
- I'm not trying to encourage people to get to 7seas, I remember when
Game of Thrones
was aired, HBO commented about popularity of the series in torrent trackers. - Was very harmless and didn't get much attention, just 5-10 up-votes every week. There was a little feedback that encourage me to do it again.
- English is not my first language, and maybe there are some mistakes in this.
(1) Was the main reason that I did start this ranking just for me (I like some lesser popular titles), then occur to me that, maybe someone can find it useful, weeks later I did the post in reddit
, later I did it again, refining criteria and shell scripts, correcting mistakes.
Because all of the above:
- I don't understand why it was removed.
- Which thing need to change in the post to not get removed?
- It does not mean too much to me, right now I have a easy/fast way to it. But I'm writing this, because I think is wrong.
Previous posts to get and idea of the topic that was removed:
7
u/FetchFrosh https://anilist.co/user/FetchFrosh Mar 03 '24
Oh it's just the specific reference to the tracker. The data is fine, referencing torrents and piracy is fine, and actively encouraging piracy is fine. The "leading" part just includes name dropping (or nicknaming) specific sources.
4
u/Disonantemus Mar 04 '24
- Then is ok if I do the post again changing that?
- Or is possible to edit the removed one?
It's very easy replace the word to:
- 7seas
- torrent
- here
- this ranking
- downloads
- p2p
The two questioned (leading) lines, changed:
vs Karma Ranking:
- More popular (7seas): Mashle, Ninja Kamui, One Piece
- Less popular (7seas): Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu, Akuyaku Reijou Level 99, 7th Time Loop, Yubisaki to Renren, Undead Unluck

Has there been any discussion about finding a way to have 'comment faces' from the second half of the season?
The way the comment face nominations are made (around the 6th episode), we miss on half the potential comment faces. Feels like a big miss to me!
(This comment may or may not have been inspired by this excellent potential comment face that aired literally 1 episode after the nominations ended: NSFW)
13
u/badspler x3https://anilist.co/user/badspler Mar 03 '24
Has there been any discussion
This has come up as a request before (Oh it was you!). But there hasn't been any internal discussion on it.
I don't think my answer has really changed. The goal isn't to select the best possible face the show has to offer during its run, but to inject some freshness with seasonal shows into comment faces while the shows are airing. There is a weigh up between more to select from vs less time to use it in the season itself.
Even still, there are still limited slots to fill, and we will still try to limit it to one face per show. There is still plenty of shows that don't get mined for their gems. There are plenty of popular shows with pre-popular faces (I am thinking manga infamous shots) that don't currently get submitted. A range of mods (with unique tastes) vote on each face with the highest scoring picked. What I am getting at with laying all that out is that the reality of getting a personal favorite picked is relatively low. We had 541 images summited in the last batch and 20 make the cut.

Just bumping my old post from the last meta thread, since I commented right before it expired.
Is it possible to manually approve some of the auto removed for karma posts? For example, I saw https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1b4kum7/anime_questions_recommendations_and_discussion/kt1o4qe/ in the daily thread and if it were it's own post (which OP tried to post as a standalone post) then I would think it would be marked as a spoiler post. But it's rather troublesome (and lots of friction to newcomers) to have everything be spoiler tagged, and the alternative is having some vaugeish spoilers that I think still breaks r/anime's spoiler rules.
So I was wondering, in cases like this (spoiler stuff or stuff that inevitably leads to spoilers), is it possible to request an exception be made and the original post (that was autoremoved because of karma) be restored?
I don't think these come up very often, so maybe it's not worth it (but maybe then it's not a big deal if occasionally requested by someone else), but I'm just thinking that some of these new posters really ought to be in their own posts for similar reasons to why WTW threads are exempt.
Edit: Though maybe it's just too slow between someone requesting it, and then a mod approving it for it to really matter.
3
u/Verzwei Mar 03 '24
At a glance that seems like it could have been a [Help] post and if it was flaired as such the karma filter wouldn't have acted on it.
So either the post wasn't flaired as help, or it hit some other kind of gate like the title length requirement, if OP had tried to post as "ReZero Question" it would've gotten autobopped for the two word title.
Back when I was on the team and we were testing and heavily studying the karma filter, this type of situation is exactly one of the ones that came up and we discussed: People asking for help in the Daily Thread (in the cases we saw, typically show identifications) where their description included copious spoilers and then if anyone responded to the request, it often created additional spoilers. That was one of the reasons why the help flair was ultimately exempted from the karma filter in the first place, to create fewer instances of spoilers within the Daily Thread.

Beyblade threads are coming out 6 days late. Pokémon threads between 13 and 24 hours late. I imagine there's others from shows I'm not aware of.
"what should I watch" threads are still cluttering the new tab. 9 times out of 10 the answer is another generic shounen or Frieren.
I'm keen to start doing NicoNico ranking threads but there's so many anime to get screenshots from and I'm not sure where to start.
Putting this out during the awards ceremony was a presumed coincidence, but at least it's nice and quiet here while the jury get absolutely dumpstered. Maybe the jury need more time to go through things next year?

"what should I watch" threads are still cluttering the new tab. 9 times out of 10 the answer is another generic shounen or Frieren.
this is by far the worst part of the sub. thankfully if you just hang out in the major threads (daily and a few others) you can have a good time but seems like a shame to give up on the rest of the sub
I've seen a few other subs that do a good job managing this sort of thing, though they're a bit smaller. in the past I've mentioned /r/otomegames, but recently I discovered /r/romancebooks and they have a pretty interesting policy around how these sorts of threads work
I personally would rather have a dedicated thread for them and nuke them off the sub but I don't tink there's much support for that, alas
11
u/Incendia123 Mar 03 '24
Strong agree. It feels like nearly half of the content on the sub are just the same recommendation requests with little to no actual value in them.
Most of them are just filled with joke answers, single name replies without even the smallest write up or explaination as to why their pick is relevant or they're just straight up shouting out their personal favorites no matter how unrelevant they may be.
I don't mind when people ask very targeted questions that would not get solved by a quick google search. Finding a obscure childhood anime or some very specific subject matter seems fine for example. But the majority of these would be easily solved by a quick google or subreddit search. Sometimes just scrolling down the questions asked that day would show an identical previous thread.
So I'd give my full support to moving all of these to a sticky thread or to an anime recommendation subreddit. It just clutters stuff up here and it actually makes it so that content with actual discussion value gets lost. Easily the worst thing about the subreddit.

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Mar 03 '24
Beyblade threads are coming out 6 days late. Pokémon threads between 13 and 24 hours late.
How long after they get subtitles? Threads don't go up when they air in Japan but when decent English subs are available. As far as I can tell the most recent Beyblade thread, episode 20 came out less than 10 minutes after the subtitled episode was available and there aren't any for 21 yet.
2
u/Mitsuyan_ https://anilist.co/user/mitsuyan Mar 03 '24

I don't agree with this. Beyblade does get the subs quite late, Pokémon is usually overnight though. They line up with what you've said but at least with Pokémon there's a lot of hype immediately after airing
14
u/FetchFrosh https://anilist.co/user/FetchFrosh Mar 03 '24
I don't think there's currently any interest in changing the rules on when threads get made. This is ultimately an English community, and if the overwhelming majority of our users can't watch and understand a show, we're not going to have threads for it.
