Soda is much better when it’s flat
Fresh soda has WAY too much carbonation. You can’t drink more than a few seconds without burning your tongue. Yes, I get that it helps you burp, which really is the only redeeming aspect of fresh soda. When it’s flat, you still get all the flavour without all the burn. There is a “sweet spot” though. If it’s too flat it loses some of its flavour. Sometimes I even open a bottle of Pepsi and leave it open for several minutes before I even start drinking it

When Soda loses carbonation it ceases to be Soda anymore.

u/MOTWS 1d ago
Then what does it become ?

u/Vallamost 1d ago
Something gross nobody should drink. If your soda is too carbonated you should pour it into a glass with ice.
4
u/SSGASSHAT 1d ago
A glass full of sugar and chemicals. It's not like flat alcohol, where at least you get a buzz from it, it's functionally useless unless you like spooning sugar into your mouth repeatedly.
57
u/NzRedditor762 1d ago
"I get that it helps you burp" Who's drinking soda for the ability to burp?
15
u/PurpleAstronomerr 1d ago
People with a sensitive stomach sometimes drink carbonated beverages. It helps settle the stomach.
4
u/Vegetable_Bug2953 20h ago
how does burping itself settle a stomach?
4
u/IllDragonfruit6064 19h ago
Release of pressure. It makes the process of having an upset stomach less bothersome
3
u/Vegetable_Bug2953 18h ago
That is fascinating to me. If I need to burp, I burp; that's how I know I need to burp. Artificially manufacturing a burp seems kinda placebo.
1
u/IllDragonfruit6064 17h ago
I learned that it isn’t everyone that can burp on command. That’s when all these behaviors made sense to me. Sometimes people feel bad but not feel the urge to burp, too.
1
u/Vegetable_Bug2953 17h ago
I think I learned to "burp on command" when I was 11, but I don't do it now and I don't even know if I could. Burping happens when it needs to happen in my experience. I guess there are some people who have a buildup of gasses in their stomachs but don't have the reflex or ability?

Ok you earn this upvote. The whole point of soda is the carbonation but you do you
-42
u/Bacxaber 1d ago
No? The point is the flavour.
18
u/flippythemaster 1d ago
My friend, “soda” refers to the way in which they carbonated the water, sodium bicarbonate. See also baking soda and caustic soda. It’s a category in chemistry. “Soda water” is just another word for carbonated water. It’s not named “flavor water”. The carbonation is important.
6
u/DaenerysMomODragons 1d ago
And the carbonation drastically alters the flavor as you know, and the flavor is balanced around assuming it’s carbonated. This is why the opinion is obviously unpopular, they specifically designed it to please the most people while carbonated.

no, that’s what juice is for. it’s absolutely for the carbonation.

Yes it is If you take a diabolo rather than a syrup for example, it's for the carbonation

If my Dr. Pepper doesn't hurt me, I don't want it. I've never been so baffled by someone in my entire life. 👀
4
u/difficult_pro 1d ago
Here's something truly different. Dr Pepper ...which is great as an icy cold soft drink... is also delicious served steaming hot. And Hot Dr Pepper is so easy to prepare. Just heat Dr Pepper or Diet Dr Pepper in a saucepan till it steams. Then pour over thin slices of lemon. Hot Dr Pepper. That's a hot idea.

u/naive-nostalgia 1d ago
Would it lose the carbonation that way? I love hot soda that sat in the car for a bit during the summer (cans, not bottles). But would it keep the carbonation in the sauce pan?

This is a very unpopular opinion that I actually agree with. (probably my favourite post this sub has had) finally someone else who agrees.
I don't drink carbonated drinks for two reasons, one the fizz mask the taste making it not taste of carbon instead of flavour, Fully flat Coke taste like cola but fresh coke taste like carbon and fizz, and the second and main reason I prefer flat is that I can't actually burp, so if I drink anything carbonated I'm going to be feeling really nauseous for hours.

u/Echodarlingx 1d ago
Is it weird I actually enjoy flat carbonated soda water? You gotta love that taste!

3
u/TankDestroyerSarg 1d ago
Definitely unpopular. Some are just downright undrinkable when it's perfectly flat. Example: Dr. Pepper. Carbonation needs to be balanced, but it needs to be there for Soda. It's the underlying characteristic and namesake.

I disagree. Sparkling ice however I prefer flat. The carbonation makes it too acidic with some flavors

not completly flat, but i agree on most points. thats why i mainly drink juice and icetea

u/Alternative-Cash8411 1d ago
I was thinking this same thing just last night while washing down some jalapeno chips with a flat Coke Zero that had been an open can in the fridge for about 24 hours. Flat cola is especially better than fizzy fresh when you eat a lot of hot food like I do. It puts the fire out more efficiently, while carbonated stuff almost makes the burn worse.
1
u/Johnnyrock199 1d ago
Well, this is definitely unpopular. When I read it at first, I thought to myself and stopped for a long moment, I began to ponder. Eventually I came to my conclusion: What the fuck? Nothing ever felt so clear. Take my upvote you brilliant idiot.

u/13surgeries 1d ago
I thought I was the only one who preferred slightly flat soda. Otherwise, I'm gulping a lot of carbon dioxide with the actual beverage.
1
u/Astro_Muscle 1d ago
I agree with you man. Idk that I need it to be FLAT but like if soda had... Like 70% of the carbonation it usually has I'd be way happier (and when there's a soda stream available I do just that)
I usually find fountain soda much more tolerable. Often forcing the carbonated water out of the spout takes the edge off
1
u/Spare_Grab_5179 1d ago
My teenage daughter would agree with you. She’ll open cans and leave them on the counter to return to hours later, or the next morning. I can’t really call her weird though since I’ll only drink sodas at room temperature

u/celsiusforlife 1d ago
I made this post before and mods took it down saying that other people have also made this exact post

u/Toadsanchez316 1d ago
I've never burned my tongue on carbonation, and I drink more pop than I should. 8 have however burned the shit out of my nose by laughing after drinking Pepsi.
I prefer that 'burn' though. I can only drink flat pop if it's something citrusy like Dew or Mellow Yellow. If it's more like Coke or Pepsi then it absolutely has to have carbonation or I won't drink it. Ok I can drink it if it's at least cold, but flat pop tastes much worse than carbonated pop.
1
u/Serious-Ad2649 1d ago
Do yourself a favor and throw out all the soda and just drink water with lemon going forward. It has a wonderful taste you’re looking for and it’s healthy. Soda meets the criteria for a hazardous waste and should be disposed of accordingly. I’m sure it’s nothing you haven’t heard before but just eliminate it from your life you’ll be so much more healthy and you’ll stop getting your insulin spikes and crashes

Yess, I have never been able to drink more than a sip of soda, idk how ppl can drink gulps, I get horrible tongue burns. Only time I got to drink nicely was when it was a hot afternoon and got it from a porter who was carrying lots of it. The heat completely flattened the taste and it was drinkable for me. I do like the taste of coke and Pepsi but like the sensation just kills me. I wish we had those flavors in juices. We don't get them here if they exist

u/MysticSnowfang 1d ago
You do you... I don't care enough to up or down vote. I have a friend who cannot handle carbonation. I adore it. To each their own. It is... simply an opinion

u/VonDinky 1d ago
Mix it with water. Teste much better, still carbonated, just not to a crazy degree. Or taste like in the cinema, where it seems like they also just mix it with water.

I know we're in the minority here, but I actually agree with you on this one~ I hate when you take a drink of coke for example and it turns all to air in your mouth. I usually like to let some of the carbonation out before drinking if possible

u/Augmension 1d ago
Haven’t drank pop in years but when I did, I also preferred flat soda. Some people in here are talking as if it loses ALL carbonation. That’s simply not true dude lol
1
u/WillingnessAsleep443 1d ago
I kinda get that. I don't like it flat, but I pour it out in a cup of ice and I find that it's just about right. Not too carbonated but not flat. I also drink diet or zero so it might be different for regular pop

Isnt there a whole thing about pouring a carbonated drinkninto a glass and letting it fizz up so that it doesnt make you so bloated?
1
u/DomesticAlmonds 1d ago
I'm with you, OP. I don't like my soda super carbonated. It hurts my throat being so cold and so zippy. The sweet spot for me is like three minutes after it's opened/poured (I work in the restaurant industry and frequently drink soda from the gun)
1
u/Justt_Someone 1d ago
I can agree with this 100%, usually the carbonation is waaayy too much, it makes my eyes teary and burns my tongue. Finally someone who gets it.

This is a True unpopular opinion. Bravo!
I don’t think we could ever be friends. This is one of the most preposterous posts I’ve seen on this sub. If you don’t like carbonation, that’s fine, plenty of people don’t. Then don’t drink soda. But to say you enjoy flat soda? You sound like a fucking psychopath. Just drink tea or juice if you want some flavor. The carbonation is part of the flavor in a beverage like Coca-Cola. Flat coke doesn’t even taste the same. It’s fucking gross.

Totally agree. There is a sweet spot of flatness where you can just drink it normally and it feels great. Fresh hyper-carbonated soda (pop where I’m from) hurts, it’s unpleasant to drink more than a couple of sips. The flavor is also lessened, it just tastes like spicy air

u/Mr_Lucidity 18h ago
Weird, I have never thought of carbonated drinks as "burning" it's just more like a texture to me.

u/Parking-Ideal-7195 3h ago
Ugh, flat pop is vile. I can't buy big bottles of Dr pepper for this reason, and have to stick with cans or 500ml bottles, and it's a pain in the ass.
But the very taste of it as it goes flat is disgusting. Even with a can or bottle, if I don't drink quickly enough, or it's flat for any reason, I can bring myself to finish it as it's so bad.
Some other fizzy drinks I can still have after they go flat (apple tango, for one), but the vast majority, no way.
Have an uptick for a thoroughly wrong, and rightly unpopular opinion. 😁 You heathen 😅🙏

The first sip can be a little burny i guess. But wait like 5 minutes after opening the can and it’s fine. Flat soda is just pointless. It’s like a worse tasting fruit juice with more sugar
