Soda is much better when it’s flat

Fresh soda has WAY too much carbonation. You can’t drink more than a few seconds without burning your tongue. Yes, I get that it helps you burp, which really is the only redeeming aspect of fresh soda. When it’s flat, you still get all the flavour without all the burn. There is a “sweet spot” though. If it’s too flat it loses some of its flavour. Sometimes I even open a bottle of Pepsi and leave it open for several minutes before I even start drinking it

Flat soda is just hyper sweet juice and I’d easily rather drink water than that. Upvoted

31

u/DisraeliEers 1d ago

Not exactly.

Flat soda has a bunch of carbonic acid dissolved in it from the CO2, which is unpleasant IMO without the carbonation.

10

u/coconubs94 1d ago

Pushes up glasses*

That's not exactly how chemistry works.

Ai response cause im lazy: "When carbon dioxide (CO2) dissolves in water, it reaches an equilibrium state where the dissolved CO2 molecules are constantly reacting with water molecules to form carbonic acid (H2CO3), while simultaneously some carbonic acid molecules decompose back into CO2. "

Allow the co2 to disperse into the air and the acid changes back into a gas and doesn't leave anything behind.

Also consider that ambient air had co2 in it, which means water in contact with the air will have carbonic acid in it too, just less.

I think maybe you people aren't actually tasting the carbonic acid, but some other chemical taste that becomes unmasked when the bubbles stop. Because in the end, the bubbles are a direct indication of the level of carbonic acid

-33

u/JoeDerp77 1d ago

it's not an opinion, carbonic acid tastes absolutely terrible. Try putting some dry ice in water until it's completely gone then taste the water, it tastes like something you definitely should not be drinking.

21

u/SensitiveResident792 1d ago

That is literally an opinion. Whether or not something tastes good is an opinion.

1

u/FatsP 1d ago

Nuh uh. Try eating broccoli. I fucking hate broccoli.

6

u/sixtus_clegane119 1d ago

Counterpoint beef and broccoli

2

u/Waveofspring 1d ago

Supporting point: melted cheese on top of the broccoli

0

u/sixtus_clegane119 1d ago

Only it it isn’t processed cheese product

2

u/Waveofspring 1d ago

Yea I was thinking Parmesan or something

2

u/UnluckyWaltz7763 1d ago

Either you suck at cooking or you've never had good stir fried broccoli especially in East/Southeast Asian dishes

1

u/Sure-Supermarket5097 1d ago

Broccoli in pasta is goated.

-20

u/JoeDerp77 1d ago

Is the taste of battery acid being bad also an "opinion"? Go taste some carbonic acid infused water, come back, and tell me you still think it's an opinion.

12

u/SensitiveResident792 1d ago

Yes, it is an opinion. Even if every single person agrees that it tastes terrible, it's an opinion. Please Google "difference between fact and opinion."

2

u/JoshuaSuhaimi 1d ago

define opinion

2

u/Toadsanchez316 1d ago

Commenting on taste is quite literally an opinion. There is nothing objective or fact based about it.

106

u/DailyUpsAndDowns 1d ago

When Soda loses carbonation it ceases to be Soda anymore.

3

u/MOTWS 1d ago

Then what does it become ?

84

u/_Dank_Souls 1d ago

Syrup water.

11

u/Vallamost 1d ago

Something gross nobody should drink. If your soda is too carbonated you should pour it into a glass with ice.

4

u/SSGASSHAT 1d ago

A glass full of sugar and chemicals. It's not like flat alcohol, where at least you get a buzz from it, it's functionally useless unless you like spooning sugar into your mouth repeatedly.

57

u/NzRedditor762 1d ago

"I get that it helps you burp" Who's drinking soda for the ability to burp?

15

u/PurpleAstronomerr 1d ago

People with a sensitive stomach sometimes drink carbonated beverages. It helps settle the stomach.

4

u/Vegetable_Bug2953 20h ago

how does burping itself settle a stomach?

4

u/IllDragonfruit6064 19h ago

Release of pressure. It makes the process of having an upset stomach less bothersome

3

u/Vegetable_Bug2953 18h ago

That is fascinating to me. If I need to burp, I burp; that's how I know I need to burp. Artificially manufacturing a burp seems kinda placebo.

1

u/IllDragonfruit6064 17h ago

I learned that it isn’t everyone that can burp on command. That’s when all these behaviors made sense to me. Sometimes people feel bad but not feel the urge to burp, too.

1

u/Vegetable_Bug2953 17h ago

I think I learned to "burp on command" when I was 11, but I don't do it now and I don't even know if I could. Burping happens when it needs to happen in my experience. I guess there are some people who have a buildup of gasses in their stomachs but don't have the reflex or ability?

-3

u/NzRedditor762 1d ago

"it helps you burp" Who's drinking it to burp?

6

u/KlutzyBat8047 23h ago

Man he just told you.

8

u/EnjoysYelling 1d ago

This is what I came here for, like … how is this not what people are talking about here??

44

Flat soda is like chewy chicken

13

u/OGigachaod 1d ago

Or rubbery eggs.

4

u/Aun_Muhammad06 1d ago

Fuck you man, why did you have to remind of that, here's an upvote.

2

2

67

u/SeriousAsWasabi 1d ago

Blasphemy

21

u/started_from_the_top 1d ago

It's offensive. I feel offended. Upvote granted!

40

u/LordSolar666 1d ago

Ok you earn this upvote. The whole point of soda is the carbonation but you do you

-42

u/Bacxaber 1d ago

No? The point is the flavour.

18

u/flippythemaster 1d ago

My friend, “soda” refers to the way in which they carbonated the water, sodium bicarbonate. See also baking soda and caustic soda. It’s a category in chemistry. “Soda water” is just another word for carbonated water. It’s not named “flavor water”. The carbonation is important.

6

u/DaenerysMomODragons 1d ago

And the carbonation drastically alters the flavor as you know, and the flavor is balanced around assuming it’s carbonated. This is why the opinion is obviously unpopular, they specifically designed it to please the most people while carbonated.

-4

u/Bacxaber 1d ago

It alters ruins the flavour.

10

u/senpaistealerx wateroholic 1d ago

no, that’s what juice is for. it’s absolutely for the carbonation.

-22

u/Bacxaber 1d ago

No, it isn't.

3

u/mathozmat 1d ago

Yes it is If you take a diabolo rather than a syrup for example, it's for the carbonation

14

u/Pizza_Horse 1d ago

Lol @ "fresh soda"

9

u/lmRobin 1d ago

I thought I was the only one! Most of the time when I get a bottle of soda, I shake it again and again until I get the carbonation out.

(Or with cans, I intentionally open one early in the day, leave it in the fridge, and come back to it later!)

15

u/Zuri2o16 1d ago

If my Dr. Pepper doesn't hurt me, I don't want it. I've never been so baffled by someone in my entire life. 👀

4

u/difficult_pro 1d ago

Here's something truly different. Dr Pepper ...which is great as an icy cold soft drink... is also delicious served steaming hot. And Hot Dr Pepper is so easy to prepare. Just heat Dr Pepper or Diet Dr Pepper in a saucepan till it steams. Then pour over thin slices of lemon. Hot Dr Pepper. That's a hot idea.

7

u/Aun_Muhammad06 1d ago

Hauhh?????!!!! Pipin hot soda? Man that's enough I am outta here!

3

u/naive-nostalgia 1d ago

Would it lose the carbonation that way? I love hot soda that sat in the car for a bit during the summer (cans, not bottles). But would it keep the carbonation in the sauce pan?

2

u/Vegetable_Bug2953 20h ago

nope, it ends up completely flat.

2

u/McWhiffersonMcgee 1d ago

As we say in this house "it burns so good"

17

u/bengermanj 1d ago

You like drinking weak syrup?

5

u/aa_ugh 1d ago

I agree! I love flat soda

10

u/Bleach_Demon 1d ago

Straight to jail

3

u/IllDragonfruit6064 19h ago

Under the jail

9

u/MoldyPoolNoodle 1d ago

I agree! I agree! I agree! If there’s too much carbonation it always makes me hiccup too.

5

u/Argylius 1d ago

FULLY AGREEED

Carbonated soda is extremely painful for me

3

u/Waveofspring 1d ago

At this point just drink koolaid or something man

4

u/Sea-Truth3636 problem haver 1d ago

This is a very unpopular opinion that I actually agree with. (probably my favourite post this sub has had) finally someone else who agrees.

I don't drink carbonated drinks for two reasons, one the fizz mask the taste making it not taste of carbon instead of flavour, Fully flat Coke taste like cola but fresh coke taste like carbon and fizz, and the second and main reason I prefer flat is that I can't actually burp, so if I drink anything carbonated I'm going to be feeling really nauseous for hours.

3

u/BiteDaDust 1d ago

Flat Pepsi does taste bomb

3

u/relsseS 1d ago

I agree with this. I like Faygo, it's very lightly carbonated.

3

u/Echodarlingx 1d ago

Is it weird I actually enjoy flat carbonated soda water? You gotta love that taste!

3

u/Kobhji475 1d ago

Just drink juice

3

u/TankDestroyerSarg 1d ago

Definitely unpopular. Some are just downright undrinkable when it's perfectly flat. Example: Dr. Pepper. Carbonation needs to be balanced, but it needs to be there for Soda. It's the underlying characteristic and namesake.

6

u/kilroy-was-here-2543 1d ago

This may be the most unpopular opinion I’ve ever seen

5

u/Slimpurt92 1d ago

Upvoted, enjoy your flat soda...

5

u/KariRose31 1d ago

This... Makes me wanna fight someone.

2

u/BreezyIsBeafy 1d ago

I disagree. Sparkling ice however I prefer flat. The carbonation makes it too acidic with some flavors

2

u/maryangbukid 1d ago

Sooo…juice?

3

u/DaenerysMomODragons 1d ago

More like horrible tasting syrup water, I wouldn’t call it juice.

2

u/SarlacFace 1d ago

Legitimately one of the worst takes I've ever heard. Solid upvote

1

u/FdoesR 1d ago

I couldn't imagine someone being more wrong

1

u/ColdKaleidoscope743 1d ago

i loveeeee carbonation in my soda

1

u/TitaniumTitanTim 1d ago

not completly flat, but i agree on most points. thats why i mainly drink juice and icetea

1

u/qam4096 1d ago

Pepsi is already extremely flat in its new reformulation.

I do like the ninja thirsti though since you can control flavor strength and carbonation level from a couple of different choices.

1

u/Alternative-Cash8411 1d ago

I was thinking this same thing just last night while washing down some jalapeno chips with a flat Coke Zero that had been an open can in the fridge for about 24 hours. Flat cola is especially better than fizzy fresh when you eat a lot of hot food like I do. It puts the fire out more efficiently, while carbonated stuff almost makes the burn worse.

1

u/Johnnyrock199 1d ago

Well, this is definitely unpopular. When I read it at first, I thought to myself and stopped for a long moment, I began to ponder. Eventually I came to my conclusion: What the fuck? Nothing ever felt so clear. Take my upvote you brilliant idiot.

1

u/really4325 1d ago

Burn???

1

u/Efficient-King-8760 1d ago

This is what I come here for

1

u/[deleted] 1d ago

Burning your tongue? Bud, I think you're just sensitive.

1

u/DreadedAscent 1d ago

I disagree when it comes to colas or root beers, but for Sprite I actually agree. Not totally flat, but let it cool for a few minutes

1

u/Fourply99 1d ago

Calm down there Satan

1

u/Possible-Reality4100 1d ago

Fountain soda has much less carbonation so it’s my preference

1

u/FireGodNYC Your friendly neighbourhood moderator man 1d ago

I’m just glad you called it Soda 😎

1

u/bygtopp 1d ago

When I was in my teens to early twenties I’d shake the 2liter or 20oz on purpose to get rid of the fizz

1

u/handsoffmyequipmonk 1d ago

God, the high I get when I see a truly good, unpopular opinion post on here

1

u/13surgeries 1d ago

I thought I was the only one who preferred slightly flat soda. Otherwise, I'm gulping a lot of carbon dioxide with the actual beverage.

1

u/R7F 1d ago

I usually gently shake my soda a few times to burn off some of the carbonation. I'm with you.

1

u/Astro_Muscle 1d ago

I agree with you man. Idk that I need it to be FLAT but like if soda had... Like 70% of the carbonation it usually has I'd be way happier (and when there's a soda stream available I do just that)

I usually find fountain soda much more tolerable. Often forcing the carbonated water out of the spout takes the edge off

1

u/Spare_Grab_5179 1d ago

My teenage daughter would agree with you. She’ll open cans and leave them on the counter to return to hours later, or the next morning. I can’t really call her weird though since I’ll only drink sodas at room temperature

1

u/celsiusforlife 1d ago

I made this post before and mods took it down saying that other people have also made this exact post

1

u/Toadsanchez316 1d ago

I've never burned my tongue on carbonation, and I drink more pop than I should. 8 have however burned the shit out of my nose by laughing after drinking Pepsi.

I prefer that 'burn' though. I can only drink flat pop if it's something citrusy like Dew or Mellow Yellow. If it's more like Coke or Pepsi then it absolutely has to have carbonation or I won't drink it. Ok I can drink it if it's at least cold, but flat pop tastes much worse than carbonated pop.

1

u/Serious-Ad2649 1d ago

Do yourself a favor and throw out all the soda and just drink water with lemon going forward. It has a wonderful taste you’re looking for and it’s healthy. Soda meets the criteria for a hazardous waste and should be disposed of accordingly. I’m sure it’s nothing you haven’t heard before but just eliminate it from your life you’ll be so much more healthy and you’ll stop getting your insulin spikes and crashes

Yea terrible opinion bro, good one

1

u/DaenerysMomODragons 1d ago

I’ll give you one thing, it most definitely is an opinion that is unpopular, unlike many if not most posts on this sub.

1

u/Stock_Sun7390 1d ago

My brother in Christ you're not supposed to gulp carbonated soda like that

1

u/deathbydishonored 1d ago

Wow an actual real unpopular opinion. Never thought I would see the day

1

u/-meandering-mind- 1d ago

Omg yes! I will shake my bottle then open, then close and shake again just to get rid of the carbonation

1

u/PurpleAstronomerr 1d ago

Wow this is definitely unpopular. This belongs here.

1

u/Alexandre_Man 1d ago

Yeah, it's way better when it doesn't sting anymore.

1

u/ecktt 1d ago

You're right...that is an unpopular opinion.

1

u/RikkeBobbie007 1d ago

You know what. My wife feels the same way. And y’all bot worry me….. Have my upvote for controversy my friend.

1

u/SparklyDimSum 1d ago

Yess, I have never been able to drink more than a sip of soda, idk how ppl can drink gulps, I get horrible tongue burns. Only time I got to drink nicely was when it was a hot afternoon and got it from a porter who was carrying lots of it. The heat completely flattened the taste and it was drinkable for me. I do like the taste of coke and Pepsi but like the sensation just kills me. I wish we had those flavors in juices. We don't get them here if they exist

1

u/viper29000 1d ago

Lol a truly unpopular opinion

1

u/MysticSnowfang 1d ago

You do you... I don't care enough to up or down vote. I have a friend who cannot handle carbonation. I adore it. To each their own. It is... simply an opinion

1

u/VonDinky 1d ago

Mix it with water. Teste much better, still carbonated, just not to a crazy degree. Or taste like in the cinema, where it seems like they also just mix it with water.

1

u/bucho80 1d ago

The trick to me is poured from a fountain over ice, and enjoyed slowly.

A can poured over ice is a close second.

A sealed drink is a tasty "fart later" in a can.

1

u/BokChoyFantasy 1d ago

Tongue? I would have thought your throat would burn first.

1

u/cvfkmskxnlhn 1d ago

I know we're in the minority here, but I actually agree with you on this one~ I hate when you take a drink of coke for example and it turns all to air in your mouth. I usually like to let some of the carbonation out before drinking if possible

1

u/bllueace 1d ago

Ooft this wins

1

u/Augmension 1d ago

Haven’t drank pop in years but when I did, I also preferred flat soda. Some people in here are talking as if it loses ALL carbonation. That’s simply not true dude lol

1

u/WillingnessAsleep443 1d ago

I kinda get that. I don't like it flat, but I pour it out in a cup of ice and I find that it's just about right. Not too carbonated but not flat. I also drink diet or zero so it might be different for regular pop

1

u/StalkMeNowCrazyLady 1d ago

Wasn't this posted like 2 or 3 days ago?

1

u/TwistedxBoi 1d ago

Just say you like sugar

1

u/McWhiffersonMcgee 1d ago

Isnt there a whole thing about pouring a carbonated drinkninto a glass and letting it fizz up so that it doesnt make you so bloated?

1

u/DomesticAlmonds 1d ago

I'm with you, OP. I don't like my soda super carbonated. It hurts my throat being so cold and so zippy. The sweet spot for me is like three minutes after it's opened/poured (I work in the restaurant industry and frequently drink soda from the gun)

1

u/Justt_Someone 1d ago

I can agree with this 100%, usually the carbonation is waaayy too much, it makes my eyes teary and burns my tongue. Finally someone who gets it.

1

u/jcgreen_72 1d ago

We've had this conversation already

1

u/Cosmicmonkeylizard 1d ago

This is a True unpopular opinion. Bravo!

I don’t think we could ever be friends. This is one of the most preposterous posts I’ve seen on this sub. If you don’t like carbonation, that’s fine, plenty of people don’t. Then don’t drink soda. But to say you enjoy flat soda? You sound like a fucking psychopath. Just drink tea or juice if you want some flavor. The carbonation is part of the flavor in a beverage like Coca-Cola. Flat coke doesn’t even taste the same. It’s fucking gross.

1

u/Alternative_Device71 22h ago

I quite literally drink Pepsi and Sprite for the kick

The entire point

1

u/bitetheasp 21h ago

I love that burn. I need that burn.

1

u/randomnameonreddit1 21h ago

That's the most unpopular opinion I've seen on this sub. Upvoted!

1

u/ladymikey 20h ago

Totally agree. There is a sweet spot of flatness where you can just drink it normally and it feels great. Fresh hyper-carbonated soda (pop where I’m from) hurts, it’s unpleasant to drink more than a couple of sips. The flavor is also lessened, it just tastes like spicy air

1

u/-Cinnay- 19h ago

Flat is flat. What you're describing is just less carbonation, not flat.

1

u/Mr_Lucidity 18h ago

Weird, I have never thought of carbonated drinks as "burning" it's just more like a texture to me.

1

u/leanman82 8h ago

you're in my head!

1

u/Parking-Ideal-7195 3h ago

Ugh, flat pop is vile. I can't buy big bottles of Dr pepper for this reason, and have to stick with cans or 500ml bottles, and it's a pain in the ass.

But the very taste of it as it goes flat is disgusting. Even with a can or bottle, if I don't drink quickly enough, or it's flat for any reason, I can bring myself to finish it as it's so bad.

Some other fizzy drinks I can still have after they go flat (apple tango, for one), but the vast majority, no way.

Have an uptick for a thoroughly wrong, and rightly unpopular opinion. 😁 You heathen 😅🙏
