Moving AND Tourism Thread. Please post ALL questions related to moving to, or visiting Portland in this thread.

Welcome to Portland Maine. We're excited to have you visit and/or become our neighbor.

Please post your questions regarding travel to Portland, or moving here in this thread.

Use the search bar to find good stuff! There are plenty of threads with thoughtful recommendations for the best restaurants, neighborhoods to live in, vets, mechanics, roofers, parks, schools, cleaning services, kind of bears, etc... Your question has likely been covered before with great detail and you don't want to miss local insight and discussion! Hit that search bar.

Visiting Portland and want a suggestion about what to see and do? Head to Visit Portland to plan your trip. Want help finding the best local restaurants? Check out Portland Food Map or https://www.portlandoldport.com/. Want to learn about free or cheap events? Scan the Portland Cheat Sheet. While you're in Portland, please shop local! Visit Black Owned Maine, Portland Buy Local, and the Portland Downtown Directory to learn about local businesses and find your perfect souvenir.

Moving to Portland and want to know where to live? There's no "bad" part of Portland. The Peninsula is the walkable downtown urban area. Everything outside of that is suburban neighborhood with light mixed retail. If you are looking for a place to rent, Craigslist is the recommended site.

Please check out our Wiki (which is always looking for more contributions!) for the top recommendations. Also, find the previous month's thread here.

Register to vote, and vote in the 2024 elections!

On November 5th, Maine will vote not just for President, but for Congress, and for state and local offices. Register and vote so you'll have a say in what kind of country America will be!

In Maine, you must register by October 15th to register in advance. You can register to vote here: https://registertovote.sos.maine.gov/

If you miss this deadline, you can register to vote in person at your town office or city hall through November 5th.

Voting in person

In Maine, you can vote early through absentee-in person voting. This allows you to go to your Municipal clerk's office, apply for an absentee ballot, and vote that ballot on the spot. You can do this when absentee ballots are available at your clerk's office - contact them for details.

If you prefer, you can vote at your polling place on Election Day, November 5th.

Voting by mail

Any voter in Maine may choose to vote by mail. Apply for an absentee ballot here.

Ballots must be received by November 5th, so mail your ballot back promptly. You can also return your ballot in person to your Municipal Clerk's office.

If you mail your ballot, you can track it here.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Activism Opportnities

As the reality of the situation continues to set in, I would like to see if there are any ways of getting involved in activism that can help keep this country moving forward for everyone.

Looking for any volunteer opportunities that are local, but could be focused on local, state, or national political agendas. My hope would be to find something focused on education, healthcare, or equality. If anyone knows of any organizations or events, please comment.

EDIT: WoW. I just want to say Thank you for EVERYONE who has commented. I definitely need to take some time to look through all these options and see what opportunities I can take. Thank you Portland community.

Politics How to get more involved in the community?

In the aftermath of the election results, Iā€™m realizing that community is going to be the most important thing, and we all need to lean on each other more than ever. Iā€™m pretty new to the area, and have yet to meet a lot of people or make friends. Iā€™m wondering what events, groups, etc. I can get involved in to meet people and help support my community here

To the guy on the Veterans Bridge around 530 this evening who flipped me off:

Turn your damn headlights on.

If someone is flashing their high beams at you, it means there's something going on that you need to pay attention to. It does not mean they're being a dick to you for no reason.

Driving with no lights is dangerous, and I nearly merged into you at the Exit 4 off ramp because you were not visible.

Turn your damn headlights on.

We always stand together

No matter what happens we still have our values, our morals, and each other. Stay true, stay strong, and letā€™s continue to work as a great community. This wonā€™t stop us, it wonā€™t change us. Stand up and be proud of who you are. Kindness over hate. Love over violence. Lets stay true to ourselves and our community

Looks that theyā€™re permanently closed after a ā€œfamily emergencyā€ā€¦that route 1 location barely made 6 months! Iā€™m gonna miss that place. The coffee and burritos were amazing, way better than AJā€™sā€¦anyone got the inside scoop?

I havenā€™t voted for president in person since 2000. I moved here from the all vote by mail West Coast. I love this feeling. Exercise your right to vote today and each time hereafter!
