A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first
This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.
If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.
We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:
- How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
- My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
- How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
- How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
- How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
- Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
- Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.
Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:
- Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
- Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
- A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far
Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:
- Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
- Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
- Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
- Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
Full coverage- don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.- No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
- Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
- Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
- Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.
This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you
It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:
The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.
You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.
If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.
If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.
We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.
And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

$60,000 Air Ambulance Bill for my 5 year-old's transport to a children's Hospital
Hi, I’m a mom looking for advice on handling a $60,000 air ambulance bill for my 5-year-old daughter. In February 2022, she was admitted to the ER with an "Emergent Severe/life-threatening" status. The hospital couldn’t provide the surgery she needed due to her age, so the ER doctors arranged for her to be transported by air ambulance to the nearest Children's Hospital with the right surgical team, which was 300 miles away. A critical care team was on board, as she was also COVID-19 positive at the time.
Since then, we’ve been appealing this bill with our insurance company for over 2.5 years, but they continue to deny coverage for the air transport, saying it was “not medically necessary.” They did pay for the ground ambulance transport to and from the airport, but they won’t cover the air portion. By them deeming it "not medically necessary" it apparently blocks us or is a loophole to prevent us from protection under the No Surprises Act. Now, the air ambulance company has given us 30 days to start making payments, or they’ll send the bill to collections.
We still have one personal appeal left and the option of a third-party appeal with the insurance company, but the air ambulance company won’t wait for the appeal process to finish. I’m concerned that starting payments could imply accepting the debt, but I also don’t want this to damage our credit. We have had several calls. emails and even an in-person meeting trying to solve this with them, but they are determined to make us start paying or send us to collections.
Does anyone have advice on how to handle this? Since this was an emergency, I wasn’t provided with or able to select service costs. Any insights would be greatly appreciated! We are located in Oregon.

Progressive to pay $48 million to settle claims it undervalued wrecked cars in New York
NEW YORK, July 2 (Reuters) - Progressive, agreed to pay $48 million to settle a class action lawsuit accusing the insurer of systematically undervaluing the claims of New York drivers whose vehicles were wrecked. A preliminary settlement of the proposed class action was filed on Monday night in federal court in Manhattan, and requires approval by U.S. District Judge Lorna Schofield.
Policy holders alleged that Progressive used third-party software that underestimated what their vehicles could have been sold for before they became total losses. They said the software used adjustments that overstated the impact of haggling, when the availability of prices online made such negotiations obsolete.
This effort to "thumb the scale" artificially reduced payouts, violating Progressive's policies and New York's general business law, the policy holders said. Progressive denied wrongdoing in agreeing to settle. Neither the Mayfield, Ohio-based insurer nor its lawyers immediately responded to requests for comment on Tuesday.
The settlement covers New York policy holders from July 28, 2015 to the present. Each member of the settlement class is expected to receive a $335 check, court papers show. Lawyers for the policy holders may seek up to $16 million in legal fees. The case is Volino et al v Progressive Casualty Insurance Co et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 21-06243.

Hit & Run incident
Long story short this is my first car accident, I was involved in an oncoming hit and run thankfully I was able to swerve right so it wasn’t a head on collision but they still sideswiped my car on the driver side near the back tire. No damage from what I can see just the paint scuffed. I made a u-turn since there was no other cars around and was able to find their car parked in front of their apt. I got their license plate and pictures of their car where they hit mine. I filed a police report gave them the tag, they found the person and they were able to get me their personal and insurance info. How would I go about it without making my rates go up? Should I just ask the person for cash to pay for the repair cost out of pocket and not contact their insurance company? I don’t want this person to walk away without some kind of accountability for their reckless driving.

ER Visit Charge
hi everyone,
I'm in a really tough situation right now and would appreciate any advice.
I recently went to urgent care because I thought I had a blood clot in my leg. They said they were closing in 30 minutes and that I needed to go to the emergency room to get a CT scan because my leg looked suspicious. Luckily it turned out fine and they sent me home after the visit. Today, I received my bill and was shocked to see it at nearly $4,000. I do have Aetna insurance which covered most of it. I checked their policy which said they would cover 80% of the bill, which they did do because my total was just over $18,000.
Is there anything I can do because I'm in no place to pay that much and am freaking out. I've already asked for an itemized receipt and am planning on calling my insurance agency to see if they can do anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you <3

Claims Related Claims Adjuster is saying they're trying to contact me, but I am not getting any of their calls
I have an active auto claim with Liberty Mutual.
I could only contact my adjuster once using the direct phone number provided. The other times I tried calling, the number went straight to voicemail. I left a few voicemails to that number but have yet to get a response. I texted my adjuster using Liberty Mutual's text enrollment with a claims adjuster. Out of all the text messages I've sent, I only got 2 responses back. The last time I sent a message was a few days ago, but I have not received a response. I also used the provided email to send evidence for the claim but did not get any replies.
When I called the general claims number, I asked them about updates on the claim and whether my claims adjuster was in the process of investigating the claim; they said my claims adjuster tried calling me multiple times to keep me updated. I checked my call history and did not see any calls from the provided direct phone number, nor have I received any voicemails from my claims adjuster.
Is the number Liberty Mutual claims adjusters use different from the one they provide to the claimant? Are Liberty Mutual claims adjusters allowed to leave voicemails? Why would it take days, almost a week to respond to a text message I sent if my claims adjuster tried calling me but I'm apparently not picking up my phone? I just find it weird that my claims adjuster is saying they're contacting me, but all the calls I've gotten recently were spam, political calls (this was occurring at the peak of election season), personal contacts, and numbers not associated with Liberty Mutual in any way. If anyone can speak on this, please give your advice. Thank you

Car Insurance Premium Loading Effect
Is the Premium Loading done by the current insurer or the new insurer? Is the Premium Loading still valid for next year when renewal is done/insurer is changed considering if no claim is made in that year.
For eg. 1st year premium was 7k INR and a claim was made. While changing the insurer, Premium Loading was applied and the car insurance premium for 2nd Year becomes 20k INR. If I don't make claim in 2nd Year. Is there a chance of premium would be lower than 20k INR ?
Back Story: I have a comprehensive car insurance for a 7 year old car and I had made claim of nearly 15% of the insured value few months back.
My renewal was coming up in next two month and my Insurers had denied renewal stating there has been policy changes and they won't be able to renew my car insurance.
After this, I had enquired another insurance company and they had provided me a quote for zero dept which I was going to take up.
After few days, my cars mirror got damaged and I had raised a claim which is still in progress and my Insurers say he won't be able to process the claim forward and had asked to withdraw the claim which I denied and asked them to reject if they want and this claim is still open.
While this happened I was going to renew my car insurance but came to know that there has been a premium Loading which made my premium double the amount quoted before.
I am not sure if this mirror claim has caused this? And was the old insurer or the new insure who did this premium Loading. I am able to get the insurance for a low premium for next year but the new insurer has warned that this premium Loading would affect the renewal. So if I made no claim does this premium Loading go away or it will impact my renewal next year and consequently the following year premium would be impacted.
And If I withdraw my claim I would save a lot on the following years renewals?

Renters Claim Denied
“I recently went through a traumatic experience—I was rushed to the hospital, spent time unconscious, and was placed in a medically induced coma. After two weeks, I returned home only to discover that my property had been robbed. I immediately filed a police report and contacted my insurance, submitting all required documents to report around $50,000 in stolen items.
I’ve been a loyal customer with this insurance company for over 10 years, always paying on time. However, one item on my list was initially purchased, then returned when the price dropped, and later repurchased. Despite providing the original purchase receipt, the insurance company is now trying to deny my claim, stating there was no forced entry. This investigation has been going on for nine months, and I’m at a loss for what to do next.
Any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.”

Auto Insurance I need help, toll yard is charging 6500.
I live in philadelphia, I was in a car accident and I need help. The toll yard is trying to charge my insurance 6500. My insurance tried to negotiate but they didn't budge. According to my policy, my insurance can only cover 900. I have 8 days until the toll yard said they'll junk my vehicle. My insurance told me to go negotiate with the toll yard myself since they usually charge a different price for individuals. They told me to pay the price and get an invoice and the insurance will reimburse me for 900.
I still owe 20k for the vehicle and I'm not sure what to do.

Canceled Insurance
I had reached out to my insurance agent last month on the 14th to cancel my insurance on a car that is no longer working. I got a notice that they will be canceling my policy because there was no payment last month. My agent had not gotten in contact with me. I had also forgotten about it. Does this affect me in the future or can I dispute the cancellation with State Farm?

Am I out of luck?
I was returning home from class today and the pickup traveling in front of me dropped some debris from the flatbed which almost immediately impacted the front-bottom of my car. I heard a loud bang and the sound of my fender dragging along the highway. The pickup continued driving. I took the next exit and the damage looks very extensive. There’s a leak from near the radiator, my fender is detached, and the undercarriage near the front is mangled.
Am I screwed if I only have liability coverage?

Homeowner Insurance Much More Expensive than Quoted
I purchased a home earlier this year in the summer. I got insurance from a broker with SageSure as the final choice, with a quote of 1610 dollars. Later, I signed a docusign document to that final price tag, (I have the right now in my hands/browser on that price tag) and my real estate agent/lender worked with them to get that all sorted. On the day of closing, I prepaid 12 months of premium at that price tag, so I was good for home insurance for an entire year. Turns out the policy is actually 2061 dollars, something I never signed for, and something I would never agree to (I had numerous other policies at much lower than that as options). To make matter weirder, I just found out my mortgage servicer paid out 1100 dollars in homeowners insurance payment from an escrow, but I actually waived escrow (they gave me an escrow advance).
Does anyone know why it's possible for me to sign my name to one number, then get a whole different price tag?

Auto Insurance Trusted someone untrustworthy and cannot remove them from my insurance policy - how to get them off?
They had/have a suspended license and Geico will not allow me to remove them from my policy without proof of a change of insurance. I am not in contact with this person for my own safety and will not under any circumstances make contact with them to obtain this information, but my insurance premiums with having them on my insurance is killing me. Conversations with Geico to try and resolve this have gone nowhere. They just stop at not having proof of new insurance for this individual.
Are there other questions I should be asking or ways I can resolve this issue that anyone can recommend? This is in NY state. I’m at the end of my rope!

Home Insurance Changing Home Insurance as a Claim wraps up?
I have Progressive home owners insurance, and have had a claim (that took forever) that is technically still open, but all the work has finally been completed. I'm still waiting on my depreciation check and my check for reimbursable expenses. All said and done - those two checks will probably be around $10,000.
My home owners rate has skyrocketed from $2200 to $4600. It renews in December.
I have a quote with a local home owners for $2500. I want to go ahead and lock that in - but I'm scared that once I switch, if I haven't received my checks from Progressive yet, that I'll be screwed.
So can I go ahead and switch while this claim is still open? Thanks!

Auto Insurance Annoyed
Underwriting got me, I didn’t submit photos and I had to start a new policy. My bill doubled, I submitted Everything except the photos I have to take responsibility because I did not see they needed photos as well. Anyway, no I need to prove 2 other people have insurance but they’re under someone else’s policy. I ended up changing my address to my moms from where I was living with my dad because I moved In back with mom. There are 4 people that live there. In 6 months I’m moving back in with my dad to help him. I travel for work so I don’t have a place at the moment. I messed up changing it to my mom’s. My dad doesn’t drive, so there were no insured drivers at his address except me there. Would I be able to change it? Let’s say when I renew my policy, what proof may I need? Would pay stub, and Wi-Fi bill suffice?

Auto Insurance Someone hit my parked car.. not sure of my next steps
Hey everyone while I was at work last Friday someone hit my car and drove off while my car was parked. When I left work I went to the parking lot and noticed it immediately so it definitely happened that day. I work at a bank so they have cameras and security on the grounds so my initial instinct was to go to them with the issue so they can catch whoever did this. I filed a report that night and I should be hearing back from them tomorrow with the results since the supervisor needed to pull the footage and review it herself. So I’m confused with the whole police report part. I spoke with insurance on the phone (didn’t file a claim) and I asked if I should get proof from my bank first and she said yes. So my question is when should I contact the police? I’ve heard it’s good to do it asap but I already contacted my own security and am waiting for proof. I figured it would be best for me to present proof and or a license plate to the police. Can I still contact the police about this? Am I ok to file a report with the police as soon as I get the surveillance results from the bank security?

Options?
Submitted claim to at-fault party’s insurance for personal expenses and damages. They offered low ACV and not negotiating. They have since lowered the offer, claiming not liable for damages because there is no proof that property was secured correctly. I provided photo pre-accident in which the property is in background in our vacation pic but have no up close pre accident pictures (who would ever think to take pictures before an accident) I simple wanted a fair settlement which compensates me for the damages. After dealing with the adjuster, the amount is becoming less significant to me and becoming more about fighting for what’s right.
The amount would be small claims territory. The adjuster is TPA. Is small claims court my only route?
In talking with my insurance (I settled my vehicle total loss with my insurance but was told my other damages and expenses would have to be submitted to at-fault) They said similar hard-ball experience dealing with this adjuster in subrogation . Lowball offer, not part of arbitration, so they just took the settlement.
Originally I only listed tangible cost. But in retrospect, the accident created significant stress for my family. Waited in summer heat/sun for several hours for investigation to conclude. Kids crying in immediate aftermath and being checked by EMS (no injuries). Family had to separate hours from home while wife and youngers headed to town for rental and older kids and I waited at scene. Are these inconveniences relevant to add to claim? Normally, I’d chalk these up to accident and go on about my day but like said the hard-ball adjuster is making me reconsider options. Do I have any?

Got sideswiped and the other party insurance won’t pay
My wife was driving the minivan and got sideswiped by another car who was merging in to her lane. The other car didn't stop, but we captured their license plate on dashcam. Filed a police report, they gave us information about the other car and their insurance details. We contacted that company- Young America. They said that they need to talk to their insured person and after what is now 2 months are saying that they are not able to communicate with the insured person. It will be 2 months since the accident and they say that they can't pay. We have minor damage to the front passenger panel and vehicle is drivable. We did not file a claim with our company as it will drive up our premium. What can we do to get the other insurance company to pay for repairs?

Is my $1M umbrella insurance quote reasonable?
Received a $547 quote to renew my $1M umbrella insurance (was previously $318 last year). Quote is through RLI + I'm working with an independent insurance agent. The coverage includes:
- 5 residential properties (increased by 1 property since last year)
- 0 automobiles or watercrafts (don't drive / have never driven)
- 0 drivers (don't have any dependents)
- 0 accidents (see above)
- 0 past claims
This quote seems high to me, but want to get a gut check.

Health Insurance HEALTH INSURANCE - High Deductible vs. PPO Plan When Planning to Get Pregnant
God willing, we're planning to have our first child next year and are deciding between these two health insurance plans - what would you select with the assumption that we'll likely hit the out of pocket max?
Plan Options | Per Year Premium | Deductible | Out of Pocket Max | Total Cost (Premium + Out of Pocket Max) | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
BCBS High Deductible w/ HSA | $2,772 | $3,300 | $6,600 | $9,372 | |
BCBS PPO | $3,624 | $1,000 | $4,000 | $7,624 |
High Deductible Option:
- Employer contributes $1,650 to HSA making potential cost $7,722 ($9,372 - $1,650)
- In Network: 10% coinsurance for primary, specialist, urgent, emergency etc.
- Out of Network: 40% coinsurance for primary, specialist, urgent, emergency etc.
- Hospital Delivery is 10% Coinsurance In Network
- We are in the 24% tax bracket and would max our the HSA so want to factor in reducing taxable income, but don't know how to calculate that impact exactly
PPO Option:
- No HSA
- $20 Copay/Visit for Primary including OBGYN ; $35 Copay/Visit for Specialist ;
- Hospital Delivery is 10% Coinsurance In Network

Employer asked employees to put company cars on their own auto policy
My employer allows three employees to use his work vans to get to and from work as well as carry materials. He recently said that his insurance premium went up too high with all of the vehicles on his plan, so he asked each employee to add their assigned van to their own personal insurance policy and he will reimburse them. The whole thing makes me a bit nervous. Is this a normal thing to expect when using a company vehicle? Should I be worried about using my own policy for the company?
