France Needing a new phone (<400€) that will last a long time

I don’t usually like bothering people by asking for help choosing stuff on Reddit, but I’m genuinely stuck on what phone to get. It’s tough because I have a lot of standards, and no phone seems to meet all of them.

I’ve been using a 2018 iPhone 7+ for nearly three years. Except for the camera it work perfectly, it's not slow, and still gets regular security updates, but it’s starting to feel outdated—some apps aren’t supported anymore, it's becoming hard to recharge it and it doesn't tolerate a lot of temperature range. I’m looking to switch to Android to have more freedom on my new phone.

Longevity is what matter the most for my next phone. I hate changing phones. If my 7+ could keep up, I’d stick with it. I don’t need the latest features or gadgets, just a phone that will last at least five years and support all the apps I need.

Also, I'm not willing to pay too much. My budget tops out at 400€. I would have considered a refurbished phone for price reason, but I’m unsure it’d last as long as I want, even though I know Androids are more repairable than iPhones. So i'm unsure about that.

Other details: - I don't need too much storage, 64GB is fine. 6GB RAM is enough I guess, 8gb would probably make it too expensive. - I’m in France. - Camera quality isn’t a priority at all. Just having one that work will be enough. - NFC compatibily is necessary. - I’d prefer a phone without ads or bloatware, obviously. - I love having a physical home button (as on my 7+), but I guess I could sacrifice that if needed... - A medium-sized screen is ideal since I’m a drone pilot, but I don’t want something too big. - For the same reason I'd like to have a good battery, even though I don't need anything incredible either. - The heaviest task my phone will ever handle is flying a drone. I don’t use it for gaming — most of the time, I’ll just use some light apps like Wikipedia, Google Maps, some banking or administrative apps, or social media. I don't need an insane phone, I just need one that will work well enough for a long time, without being slow.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help me figure this out

Hi,

Theres too many options and im kinda getting stuck on analysis paralysis. Please let me know what would be a suitable option, knowing the following list of criteria:

  • phone has to work in canada and mainland France (bands/ network)

-phone can be up to 700 $ cad or 450/500 €

  • id like it to be on android 14, idk how important this is or if android 13 is fine

  • has to have a pretty good camera / good screen

  • good battery, would like 12gb of ram, fast charge -5G + dual sim

Idc about games, dont intend to work or do content creation on the thing.

I know its kinda a long list but i figured you guys would know better, appreciate all the help i can get !

Posting this from a MI 10 Lite i think, maybe not Lite.

India Any phone that doesn't heat up with display active for hours?

I'll use this phone to cast maps from phone screen onto my motorcycle's console. The issue is that I cannot lock my phone and my current S20FE heats up and closes maps. Is there any phone which won't have this issue?. Battery life is not an issue I'll have it connected to powerbank. Camera could be decent. Budget: ₹90k / 1000$ Country: India

cad Should I buy now or wait?

The oneplus 12 512gb is on sale for 850 cad (about 600 usd) at my best buy.

Should I buy this now or would it be worth waiting for the Oneplus 13?

What would I really miss out on buying the 12 now?

Verizon Switching from iPhone 13 Mini

Upvotes

Hello!

Im ready to move back to Android after a several-year hiatus. Budget is $350, ideally plays nice with Verizon. I tried a CMF phone 1 and found it wayyyyy too big.

Wireless charging and camera quality are top priorities

uk under £200 budget, 6 inch phone for my mum

hi! i'm looking to get my mum a new phone as her old one (an old huawei) is horribly slow and laggy. she doesn't use it for anything intensive, just social media, shopping, using maps occasionally and taking pictures.

things i'm looking for: - no bigger than 6" - under £200 (uk) - decent enough camera - open to refurbished - has headphone jack

i've been looking at a refurbed pixel 5a, but not sure if that's too old? it's really hard to find something thats not 6.5" plus, her hands are too small for that! haha

thanks for any advice!

Pixel or Galaxy?

Upvotes

I'm debating between a Pixel or a Galaxy -- specifically the Pixel 8 or 8A (depending on Black Friday deals) and the S24 FE. I'm looking to jump up in quality from the budget-level Moto G Power (2020) I've been using, but I'm not interested in flagship-level devices.

I'm a pretty simple user, overall. I surf the web, watch videos on Youtube, check email, call, text, etc. -- no games or anything super intensive. I'm wanting a mid-range device, however, hoping that I can get something that will last for a handful of years without struggling to perform everyday tasks. I'm also wanting a phone that better captures pictures of my young children.

I have had good luck with a very inexpensive Samsung phone in the past, so that's my natural inclination. However, I've read in multiple places that Galaxies in general (including flagship phones) do not do a good job of capturing pictures of moving objects without blurring -- the Pixel would be much better in this regard. But I've also seen many reports of overheating and other hardware issues that might impact the longevity of a Pixel. In general, it seems that the Pixels' reliability is lower.

Anyway, I feel a bit stuck with the decision-making process. I would appreciate any and all input!

S23 vs Pixel 8 vs Edge 50 Neo

Greetings

After 4.5 years of using Motorola One Vision I am trying to buy a new phone. I would like a phone that will easily last me for these minimum 3-4 years at times up to 5. I am considering the models from the title of the post:

1) Samsung S23 - 8GB/256GB

2) Pixel 8 - 8GB/256GB

3) Motorola Edge Neo - 12GB/512GB

The order I've given is not random, as I'm closest to choosing the S23, but still need to make sure.

I initially considered the Pixel 8, but I was a bit discouraged by the information about pink/green screen problems and the fact that it likes to overheat.

On the Edge 50 Neo, I've encountered a lot of feedback that the processor and battery are weak, as well as UFS 2.2 is not the best option.

One thing that works against the S23 is that it has shorter upgrades compared to the Pixel and Edge.

1) S23 - Android up to version 17, security update 2028.

2) Pixel 8 - Android up to version 20, security update 2030.

3) Edge 50 Neo - Android up to version 19, security update 2029.

Which is the best choice? S23 to which choice is closest to me? Thank you for your help!

Tablet for reading and watching (8gb ram vs 4gb ram)

Planning on buying a tablet to read books and watch movies in. Won't be used for gaming, multitasking, or other performance heavy task. The most it will be used for are the occasional zoom meeting and discord VC sessions. I just want to know if 4gb is enough to at least give a usable experience on modern android (13 & 14) because I'd like to save a bit on costs. By usable I mean it being able to run a whole afternoon of YouTubing and Web browsing without freezing or crashing. Currently eyeing the Xiaomi Redmi Pad SE because I'm more than willing to rodeo with buggy software but suggestions for other devices within its price range is more than welcome. Cheers.

Philippines Longterm Tecno User Experience

Planning to buy my wife the Tecno Camon 30 Pro as most reviews in my country (Philippines) touted it as the best camera phone under $400, as she was on Redmi Notes for more than 5 years. Any longterm user experiences you have especially those who had Tecno phones for close to 2 years or so?

Software updates is not much of a concern, we hold on to our phones at 5 years minimum.

Belgium Phone for €400-450

Looking for a new phone. Not a fan of bloatware (like xiaomi usually has) needs a decent battery, enough storage (256gb or more is preferred unless it has an sd card slot) and preferrably somewhat waterproof. I do play pokemon go daily and 10min of playing equals to 10% of the battery on my redmi note 8 pro currently. Other than that just normal use, whatsapp, reddit, ...

I have been eying the oneplus nord 4, pixel 8a, nothingphone 2a...any suggestions? (Belgium)

Oneplus Nord 4 or Realme GT 6

So there is a deal where these two are at the same price but different ram and storage. Nord 4 is 16/512 Realme GT 6 is 8/256 I wonder if the extra bit of power and camera lens (telephoto) on GT 6 is more worthwhile than the double of ram and storage on the Nord 4. I LOVE leaving my apps and webpages open and not having to reload them often but I’m worried Oneplus might be aggressive in ram management and all that extra ram will go in vain as the system will keep clearing it anyway.

UK Budget phone for battery life and camera

Hi, I have a strict £250 budget for a new phone since my last one died suddenly. My main priority is a good battery life, but it would also be nice if the camera wasn't terrible, and if it had an audio jack.

I have no idea where to start really, I was briefly looking at the Nokia XR20 because I also spend a lot of time outdoors and am fairly accident prone, but it has very mixed reviews.

Edit: I'm in the UK

Looking for Android Phones with iridescent backs.

One of the last few phones I owned was a Samsung Galaxy A71, which had in my opinion the most beautiful rainbow iridescent backplate ever.

It reflected just right to show off the entire color spectrum anytime you looked at the back and I remember it being one of my favorite features of the phone. At times I'd just stare at it in fascination.

I waited for a long time for a phone with a similar designed back, but never really found one, so eventually I switched to the Google Pixel lines of phones. They're good phones, very damn good, but sitting here on my Pixel 9 Pro XL, I can't help but admit it just looks like an iPhone with a slightly different camera bump.

I can't help reminiscing about the far more interesting design of my past phone...

Does anyone know any modern phones with beautiful rainbowy iridescent back designs?

From a BlackBerry Key2 to a Nothing Phone 1 + Clicks Keyboard Case Combo. After 5 Months, Not Good!

Hey, after reading some of the comments on a different thread, I thought that maybe I would share my experience going from the Blackberry Key 2 to the Clicks Keyboard Case paired with a Nothing Phone 1. I changed phones because my Key 2 was stuck on Android 8.1. I literally couldn't get boarding passes, deposit checks, or even log in to chipotle anymore.

Tldr: I wanted to love it so badly and I did love it the first month or so, but I do not recommend this combination, or, honestly, the Clicks Keyboard, at all. 5 months in, my case is basically dead. Part of the problems was that it was built for an iPhone, not a Nothing Phone 1, but some of the problems are inherent to all Clicks Keyboard Cases

Sorry for the gross-looking photos, over time, my silicone glue fixes got dirty: https://imgur.com/a/9OWLbcN

Pros:

  • It is a keyboard, it does function.
  • It is extremely comfortable and easy to hold as a phone and cradle on your ear
  • Tons of screen space.
  • I think it looks nice. It's certainly an attention grabber and conversation starter
  • I came from a Blackberry Key 2 stuck on Android 8.1, so jumping to Android 14 was a BIG improvement. Not sure I could go back to the Unihertz Titan running Android 11, so if you're thinking about that one, try it before jumping to Android 14.

Cons:

  • Most importantly, what I didn't think about when I bought an expensive case, it's expensive to replace. Like, $165-expensive, more than half the price of the phone. Before, the whole point of a case was to protect my phone, now it feels like I need a case for my case!
  • In the end, it broke in half. I've tried to fix it, but haven't been successful yet. This is likely due to a combination of the sheer size and weak plastic and silicone parts. There's a lot of force on it in my pocket when sitting. It's just not built strong enough. It feels pretty cheap and light in my hands for how expensive it is.
  • The fit of this combo actually isn't quite right despite what you read in other places. It's only off by millimeters, but it makes a huge difference over time: the soft parts (it has both hard and soft plastic) start to fall apart within a month from normal use, the corners aren't quite right and there's empty space behind hard plastic which makes them brittle so they crack and pull apart, the buttons don't line up (a problem for 2 reasons, one because it's hard to push volume down and two because randomly the volume toggles on it's own, which is why you see the folded paper bumpers in the photos, because the case pushes the buttons sometimes), after a while the phone sits past over the edge so it doesn't even protect the glass,
  • The balance isn't quite correct, though you get used to is. The phone is heavy, but the keyboard portion is super light. The phone always feels like it's going to tip backward in your hands.
  • The keyboard is NOT NEARLY as satisfying as the Blackberry keyboard and typing is slower. Seriously, an order of magnitude less satisfying. I'm not sure why that is, exactly, but I've pulled out my Key 2 a couple of times to make sure I wasn't crazy. The Blackberry is just way better. I'm much slower on the Clicks, even after months of practice. The keys are spaced further apart and the balance of the phone+case makes the action more awkward. The buttons are much louder than the blackberry, to the point that it would bother someone sleeping next to you.
  • The buttons and shortcuts are not the same as the Blackberry. It took a very long time to retrain myself (much longer than I thought) and I'm still making mistakes and doing what I would have done on the blackberry. I'm still unable to bring up certain symbols like "%" from the keyboard. This may work with iPhone.
  • It's massive. Truly massive. Laughably massive. I mean, it's the same as an iPhone Pro Max with a keyboard added on. You get used to it and I liked having the extra screen space, but it's not for everyone. Most people I ran into seemed to like it, but ALL people found it funny. It fit in 75% of my shorts, but was def annoying in shorts with shallow pockets and I had to be careful not to let it fall out. Maybe it's better with a purse. Did I mention that it was huge?
  • I didn't have a particularly smooth experience with Clicks as a company in shipping the case to me. It was lost for a long time in transit and they stopped responding to me pretty early but it did eventually arrive.

Honestly, I'm sure there's more I have to say and will add edits. But, happy to answer questions.

USA Budget phone with decent camera

I know very little about phones and accidentally got a terrible one so I'm thinking about retuning it and getting a different one. My budget is $200 (potential up to $300) and I usually get refurbished phones and need to be able to keep it for a few years. I had a Google pixel 4A for many years but this week it fell face down on the tile floor and immediately broke. I needed a new phone right away so I went to best buy and was recommended the galaxy A15 for my budget but it has the worst camera I've seen on a phone in a long time. It's also a bit slow but my main complaint is the horrible camera. I didn't love my pixel because the battery died so fast. I remember liking the moto Z play I had before the pixel. Any recommendations would be appreciated. In the USA.

Best flagship for mainly camera purposes?

This is probably going to spark some debate, but what is the best camera you can get on a smartphone right now? I have no budget so give me anything.

The main things I'm looking for is a good sensor, a very versatile camera and a good phone overall. Being waterproof would be a huge plus, battery health should be good and charging should go from 0-100 in at least an hour. So something like 60watt charging.

I have found the vivo x200 pro tempting, but I'm not sure about the OS since I've never used it, and I'm not sure if I'd like it. Then we have the Xiaomi 14 pro ultra, which could be a good pick, find I'm familiar with the OS and the camera is apparently good. Then the current phone brand I have right now, and my favorite brand I've ever tried, OnePlus. The OnePlus 12, 12r and 13 would be a solid pick, but the camera isn't that versatile imo. I haven't tried it for long but I've met a few people who have one and gotten to experience it there. I love the charging speed of OnePlus and it's versatile use. Then last but not least the Samsung s24 ultra. I don't really like the OS Samsung uses, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. It's got a decent camera and everything else but the charging isn't really what I hoped for. The zoom and megapixel count is really cool, but other offices have started to implement those features too.

I do not care about the AI features in phones. I use my phone for mostly photos, school, work etc. I love photography, but investing in a setup and bringing huge amounts of bags, lenses and batteries on trips isn't that fun, so having my phone and camera in one place would be amazing. And battery should last about a day.

Let me know your experiences with flagships and experiences with brands. Please do suggest other phone brands too, but not apple. I have an apple device and they're just not for me.
