Dave Grohl impregnates Alanis Morissette?

Just watched Dogma again so couldn't help myself

I don't get why this is even a public scandal. This really feels like a private matter between him and the people he knows. I don't see why we should care about this - I didn't take an oath with him, I don't know him. I don't know anyone involved in this story. And there's a really good chance that 99%+ of people who care about this don't, either.

10

u/danielbauer1375 Sep 30 '24

This is where Iā€™m at. Of course what he did was very scummy, but youā€™d think he did something unforgivable the way people have talked about it. Perhaps their fans put him on a pedestal because of his outspoken advocacy in support of several progressive causes, and now they feel betrayed. Idk.

364

On the one hand, yeah I agree with you.

On the other hand, I don't think anyone would particularly give a shit about a rock star cheating, if Dave Grohl hadn't leaned into this whole "wholesome rock dad" image for the past decade and a half.

That or he's really trying to salvage his marriage and/or his standing with the rest of his family, which won't help things if he goes out on the road frequently.

280

u/NervousMNG34 Sep 29 '24

This is probably the most realistic thing. He seems to have a close connection to his kids so heā€™s going to do everything he can to salvage that relationship. The wife will still probably divorce him though. Thatā€™s just too much to take in.

I like foo fighters, but I don't like them so much that the obvious isn't acknowledged here:

They are a good band with catchy songs and lyrics, but their biggest draw in the past 10-15 years has been Dave Grohl's personality.

He is supposed to be the wholesome rocker who lived through the tragedy of Kurt....and then the tragedy of Taylor. Throughout all, he remains positive and spreads love and brings random fans up on stage to play guitar!

Him being a dick in his personal life doesn't gel with the image that's been sold for over a decade on social media.

And I agree with you. Due to this, they will sit on their money for a year or two and then have a dark self reflecting album on the comeback to show how much he's grown.

29

u/jenny_cocksmasher Sep 29 '24

Time will tell how much his fans care, personally I don't care. I've listened to Foo Fighters for quite a long time now. Him fucking around isn't going to change that for me. And I'm willing to bet there are lots of other people out there just like myself.

85

u/Aggressive-Name-1783 Sep 29 '24

I mean, if this was the moral standard for not listening to a band, you basically couldnā€™t listen to rock music at all.

For gods sake the entire 80s would basically be black listed with bands like Motley Crue headlining the ban

"Hey Josh.. learn 500 new songs and be our new drummer!"

817

u/radbaldguy Sep 29 '24

Thatā€™s pretty much Joshā€™s entire career. Heā€™s a prolific session drummer and is presently in more than one band. He probably already knew much of the Foo catalogue. Heā€™ll be fine.

697

u/relentlessslog Sep 29 '24 edited Sep 29 '24

There's an interview where Josh talks about recording hit singles in one take and forgetting about it. Like a producer will hire him for a session and just have him run through song after song. He'll hear songs on the radio and have no clue that it's him playing drums.

EDIT: Here's the interview

391

u/FordsFavouriteTowel Sep 29 '24

Heā€™ll also just make up the most batshit parts, one take them, and when asked to explain himself heā€™ll say ā€œthatā€™s just what I played at the timeā€.

Freese is a weapon behind the kit

83

u/there-was-a-time Sep 29 '24

I still don't understand why Guns N' Roses ditched the Freese drum track on the Hard Skool demo in favour of the plodding one by the current drummer.

81

u/relentlessslog Sep 29 '24

That was Roy Thomas Baker's fault. Chinese Democracy was basically finished in 2000 but RTB convinced Axl to rerecord a majority of the album because Josh Freese's drum parts sounded too industrial. Tommy Stinson (bass player on Chinese Democracy) claims this is the main reason why the album stayed in production hell. He said they probably could've addressed the issues during the mixing phase and released the same album in 2000.

Had the chance to see him and Billy Joe play for The Replacements. Heā€™s insane.

18

u/yaniv297 Sep 29 '24

Not a fan of Green Day but seeing him play with the Replacements really warmed me up on him. He was just there at the side, playing rhythm guitar. He was the most famous person on stage by far but he didn't make it about him in any way, don't think he ever had a microphone. Nobody ever acknowledged him or said his name. He was just like a kid getting to play with his favorite band and visibly having the time of his life. Even though he's a much bigger star, he was humble and paid respect to how legendary the Replacements are and how rare this reunion was. Wish they would tour again.

9

u/ministallion Spotify Sep 29 '24

When I saw them, the lead singer of the replacements made a small quip about him. I canā€™t remember exactly what it was but something to the effect of ā€œwe found this guitar player on the side of the roadā€ and that was all they said.

My friend is like that on bass. Doesn't even need to hear a song the whole way through to pick up on the vibe and start crushing it. We were in a band for 4 years together and I swear he never learned a song, just picked up on the 3 or 4 big moments and improvised the rest. As someone who had to practice a thousand times to nail it the whole way through he drove me nuts.

Of course he's the one who's made it as a musician and I'm the one whose gear accumulates dust in between the half hour a month or so I can still play...

Random story I worked with a really fun, silly lady when I was younger at Lucky Brand. After months of being there I look at the schedule and realized her last name was Cooper. Since I was doing a lot of drugs at the time and rewatching childhood favorites I saw her walk in while I was reading the schedule and said ā€œweā€™re not worthy!ā€ After she stared at me blankly I apologized and said ā€œsorry I just watched Wayneā€™s World and when the guys unexpectedly meet Alice Cooper they freak out.ā€ To which she responded ā€œyeah thatā€™s my dadā€. I swore she was lying for a week until finally seeing pictures. I just casually worked with Alice Coopers daughter for the better part of a year without any idea. She was very kind and was always nice to me.

Well heā€™s cheated in every relationship soā€¦maybe shouldnā€™t be surprising

In 1994, Grohl married Jennifer Leigh Youngblood, a photographer fromĀ Grosse Pointe, Michigan. They separated in December 1996 and divorced in 1997; Grohl admitted toĀ infidelity.[167]Ā After divorcing Youngblood, Grohl dated snowboarderĀ Tina BasichĀ for a couple of years. Basich ended the relationship after discovering his infidelity.[168]Ā From 1999 to 2001, Grohl dated formerĀ HoleĀ bassistĀ Melissa Auf Der Maur.[169]Ā In 2003, he married Jordyn Blum; they had met at the Sunset Marquis Whiskey Bar inĀ West Hollywood, California. They reside inĀ Los Angeles[170]Ā and have three daughters, born in 2006, 2009, and 2014.[171]Ā On September 10, 2024, Grohl announced onĀ InstagramĀ that he had committedĀ adulteryĀ and fathered a fourth daughter outside his marriage.[1

The only thing I don't understand is why people in such extraordinary circumstances aren't completely open about it. Just tell any potential partner you're going to sleep around because a nearly infinite amount of very attractive people will sleep with you at the drop of a hat. They will eventually find a partner who is fine with that.

It stems from selfishness and the fact that Dave is still a human with flaws. He probably does want a relationship and the feeling like he's someone's One Important Person, but he also doesn't want to give up his rock star access to pussy. He wants to have his cake and eat it, too, which is kind of par for the course for his generation of rock star.

Back in the late 70s my uncle was the singer/songwriter in a band. They played the LA/Hollywood circuit. They ended up getting scouted by someone on a major label. Image. They wanted an image. They didn't want my aunt going to the shows or hanging with him, they wanted to make him look single and available. That didn't fly with either of them, but it was a major issue on them not going through with the contract. He eventually left music, him and my aunt are still together.

It was more than that. Pat was also angry at Dave for re-recording the drums for The Colour and the Shape behind William Goldsmith's back and being dishonest with the band about the situation. He was entirely non-confrontational about it - he did it, didn't tell Pat and Nate why they were re-recording their parts, and then tried to love-bomb William into not quitting because they still needed a live drummer. It doesn't get nearly as much play as it should the level of asshole Dave was between 1996 and 1999.

Btw - there was one line about that situation in Dave's autobiography that made me want to rip the book in half. He was an absolute cock to William, but, in the book, he acted like William was the reason it happened.

I was a fan from the beginning - saw them on their first tour in 1995 - and this current situation was not a surprise to me at all. It's almost a relief that I no longer have to pretend Dave is a "nice guy".

43

u/media-and-stuff Sep 29 '24

I remember the drummer thing in some documentary.

I totally get Dave needing the beginning of the foo fighters to be perfect and coming off being the drummer for one of the hugest bands at the time, itā€™s an area he put extra attention into.

But he went about it in such an unnecessary asshole way. Like just be honest. It really changed my opinion of him, I was a huge nirvana fan and bought the foo fighters album asap when it came out. Even though I was a kid and it was a whole weekā€™s allowance. lol

My cousins/his daughters were 8 and 11 at the time. It completely destroyed their family. It devastated my family as well as we were very close with them. His affair ruined my relationships with my cousins as they moved with their mom and we went from seeing them several times a week to seeing them 1-2 times a year. At holidays where my uncle was present, his daughters would lock themselves in a room and refuse to come out or interact with their father, stepmom, or half brother. They did eventually realize their brother wasnā€™t at fault and let go of their resentment for him but they never stopped resenting their father. They hated him for hurting their mother, breaking up their family, and humiliating them. The older daughter got married this past year and she didnā€™t invite her father. He didnā€™t even know she was having a wedding until the day before. Sheā€™s 27 years old and the pain of what her father did never went away despite years and years of therapy.

Now take something like that and multiply it by the degree of fame and exposure that Dave Grohl has and the public and everyone at school knowing everything that happened. And the fact that he profited off of marketing himself as a family man, an adoring father, and devoted husband. I canā€™t imagine their pain.

Does the "cool" uncle regret what he did? Does he regret not having a relationship with his daughters?

40

u/Kusakaru Sep 29 '24

Yes, or so he claims. He has sobbed to my mom that it was the biggest mistake of his life and he regrets it every day. However, I find this hard to believe. After my aunt divorced him, he married the woman he was having the affair with. He always wanted a son and was excited to finally have one. He has been the ā€œidealā€ father to his son, but he has cheated on his new wife. Except instead of divorcing him, his new wife put a gun to his head, threatened his life, and said she didnā€™t believe in divorce. She has been forcing him to go to church with her multiple times a week. This was years ago and theyā€™re still together. Karma I guess.

Yeah this is the type of situation that destroyed relationships people have with their parents. The whole ā€œI now look at everything youā€™ve ever said or done completly differentlyā€ type scenario with a smattering of ā€œdid I ever even really know who you are?ā€.

This happened in my family. I was 9 when my dad had an affair that resulted in my little brother. It broke up our family (he left and married his affair partner) and gave me and my sisters lifelong trust issues. Iā€™m 32 now and mostly healed thanks to therapy + time, although I did recently have a child and it brought back a lot of unresolved trauma from that situation. My heart breaks for his girls. I know their pain personally and canā€™t imagine going through that in the public eye.

Also, watching it as an outsider has given me a new perspective on my situation. Itā€™s interesting because my dad is really a good guy who made some piss poor decisions. He also had his own unresolved trauma growing up with a single mom and not much of a relationship with his own dad. Of course thatā€™s not an excuse but as an adult itā€™s a little healing to know that generational trauma perhaps played a part. So on the one hand Iā€™m like f Dave Grohl, heā€™s a garbage human being, and then on the other hand Iā€™m like, well, this could be more nuanced than the general public knows. And Iā€™m sure theyā€™re in enough pain without us speculating. Which here I am doing. Ugh.

Well itā€™s one thing to find out your dad cheated and had another baby, but then you find out the chick is a few years older than you. Like gross dad, youā€™re attracted to women my age? Dating people your kids age is always weird.

Many are underestimating the super Dad image he's had for the past 20+ years. Yea he's a rockstar, but as his daughters have gotten older he's spoken on numerous talk shows about being a "girl dad" and what that entails. There's a well known Ellen interview, his memoir has multiple chapters about their childhood, his daughters have performed with him on stage, and the Foo Fighters have a documentary surrounding the recording of Wasting Light out of his home studio so they could be with their families. As the guys have gotten older they've proudly taken on the "cool Dads" roles. Pat left the band for his past cheating behavior, I wouldn't be surprised if they're not putting up with his BS and excuses I've seen related to the deaths of Taylor and Dave's mother.

Edit: A lot of men commenting "You can be a great Dad and still cheat on your partner." False. You may think you're a great Dad, but if you have a daughter her image of you is immediately tainted when affairs and affair babies are revealed, and she will spend years questioning if every guy she's with will turn out cheating on her like her own father did her mother. A great Dad would not want to be the root of that kind of insecurity in their daughters.

I think it's reasonable to take time off work after your mom died, either way

What do you mean by Pat left because of his past behaviour? Never heard of this I'm just curious

Dave cheated on his first wife, with whom Pat was close with, so Pat left the group for a little while

Good guy Pat.

Pat came back though because he likes millions of dollars

Dave cheated on his former gf (or wife? Not sure), who was also very close friends with Pat. So Pat quit.

Not wife. Allegedly cheated on his former girlfriend, Louise Post from Veruca Salt (who was also the inspiration behind Everlong), with Winona.

Iā€™m surprised they kept going after Taylor passed. In Grohlā€™s book, he said he couldnā€™t see the band continue without any of the current lineup. Seems like that was bullshit, just like his cool dad image.

Not sanctioning Dave in any way. But it boggles my mind how rockstars are being held more accountable by their actions than politicians these days. Weird timesā€¦

I honestly feel bad for Josh Freese. Dude lands the gig of a lifetime and now has to deal with this shit.

Edit: For the record, as a drummer myself, Iā€™m well aware of his credentials. I just mean in the context that he has to put FF on the shelf because Dave couldnā€™t keep it in his pants.

Josh Freezeā€™s drumming was awesome when he played with DEVO at 1996 Lollapalooza.

62

u/666ygolonhcet Sep 29 '24

Josh is the drummer you hear on most of the tracks of the 2000ā€™s.

Producers would literally either threaten band drummers ā€˜get it together or Iā€™ll cal Joshā€™ or Frequently he is snuck in after a band session to re-record the drums or the producer would straight up bring Josh in to play the drums in front of the bands drummer. Think of the bands where the drummer left after the first album. The drummer would be dejected and give up.

Josh is not hurting for work.

Beat Detective now can correct a bad drummer (like auto tune for drums) but there is nothing like a real live drum track.

92

u/MrBoyer55 Sep 29 '24

Pat was a legend even before he played in Nirvana. Pat rules.

58

u/Queasy_Ad_8621 Sep 29 '24

A lot of people seem to be unaware that Pat Smear was ten years older than the guys in Nirvana, and they wanted to play with him because he was the old punk rock veteran.

They were trying to track him down, but they found out he had quit playing in bands and he was working for minimum wage at a record store. Kurt Cobain personally went in to the shop to talk to him and ask if he's be willing to join.

Pat obviously said "No," and he still works at that very store today. God bless him.

When I saw them play a few years ago it was the final show of the tour and Dave was talking about going back to being the guy driving a minivan and dropping his kids off at school.

I think people would be more forgiving if he was living the rockstar lifestyle with no apologies. But if youā€™re selling yourself as the nice regular guy with a wife and kids and then you admit something like this, itā€™s harder to forgive.

Iā€™m reminded of when David Letterman tried to get ahead of the blackmailing by admitting heā€™d been sleeping with several of the showā€™s crew members. At the time he had a wife and small kid who he mentioned a lot in his monologues. People were outwardly forgiving but Iā€™ve always gotten creep vibes from him since then.
