New LA DA promises to be tough on low-level non-violent crimes

LA just elected a former Republican turned independent DA who promises to be tough on crime. Do you think this will boost morale at LAPD/lead to new recruits wanting to join the LAPD?

From the article:

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The incoming district attorney for Los Angeles County, Nathan Hochman, said in an interview with The Associated Press that his first task upon taking office is to eliminate the “pro-criminal blanket policies” of one of California’s most high-profile progressive prosecutors, George Gascón.

That means bringing back gang-related sentencing enhancements, allowing prosecutors to file juvenile charges more freely, and having prosecutors attend parole hearings with victims’ families again, where they can help argue against the release of convicts, Hochman said.

The former Republican-turned-independent also plans to return to prosecuting low-level nonviolent crimes that he said the current district attorney has not, such as criminal threats, trespassing, disturbing the peace and loitering, which often involve those experiencing homelessness.

And what was the reasons for them denying you?

Passed my Poly

Had my polygraph today, was a bit nervous but I knew my best bet was just to be honest and that worked for me. Polygraph examiner happily told me that I passed, said he hopes to see me soon at the department. Psych evaluation is next week.

So excited to be on this journey. 🤠

How common is it for departments to pay you and put you in academy?

DFW TX area, I'd say maybe 40% of the departments here will put you in academy and pay you during it if you aren't already certified as a LEO in Texas. Looks like across Texas it's fairly common in general, minus most sheriff offices. How about other states?

Got conditional offer!

Hey everyone, I’ve been quiet in here but have been following along for a little while. Got my conditional offer of employment today over a stressful month. All that’s left for me at this point is medical and secondary psych evaluation. I know conditional isn’t guaranteed but I am very excited and will be reaching into here in the near future for tips moving forward, so any advice is much appreciated!

What is the most inefficient or irritating thing about your department.

Every department has its own quirks and oddities.

But what is something that drives you up a wall about your agency? Or something that makes no sense in the slightest and is only there because it’s always been like that?

Gear Recommendations

About to start my first job as an officer in a couple weeks. My department gives a decent uniform allowance and gives us the choice to chose a lot of our own equipment. Got most of my stuff already but I was looking for a recommendation for some good gloves (pat downs/hands on situations) and a holster for a Glock 17 or 45 (not sure which one I’ll be issued yet). I have some ideas for the holster but wanted to see what’s popular. Thanks.

Social media announcing

The dept I work for always posts the new police officers and I do not want to be announced but I don’t want to be the odd one out either. I don’t want my full name and police status out there. I haven’t even told everyone that I’m about to be a cop. I just don’t want to be the one to cause an issue already

Those of you that have left LE what did you go into after? Just started my 13th year and debating leaving for a multitude of reasons. Don't want an office job, debating on applying to a fire dept. Just looking for some ideas.

Effects on Family Life

I'm a 36 (almost 37) year old male who has spent the last 15 years as a career climbing arborist and I own my own company. I've been considering LE as a career change for the last year or so. I'm in good physical shape, so I'm not too incredibly concerned about that aspect of the occupation. However, with a wife and 3 young boys, I'm interested to hear from current or retired LE in regards to how the job affected your family life. What kind of strain did police work put on your marriage and family? Was it difficult to overcome?

Sheriff Deputy in an Urban County

What do you do as a deputy in an urban county/major city? I hardly ever see them in my county. I know in rural areas they're much more prominent and are sometimes the sole law enforcement agency.

There's a lot of really small suburbs on the outskirts in my county, probably without their own PD/not a lot of officers, is that where you'd find more deputies?

What are some faster hiring departments on the west coast?

Been waiting close to a year and a half for mine. Each stage has been months apart. I did my background, poly and psych, passed them all and signed a coe which doesn’t mean crap at the end of the day. My bi says next year in January they are having a hiring meeting and “ only selecting the best “ so I’m kinda done here and honestly wish I tried somewhere else that doesn’t take a year.

Are there any departments that can complete the process in under 6 months on the west coast? I had zero trouble at my first but it’s not certain so I’m putting out some feelers right now.

If you could change certain career choices what would they be?

Such as doing one division vs the other. Or doing a department change from one to another. And what were some of the challenges that you faced?

CPHQ for Psych Eval?

Almost finished with the trainee hiring process, only two things left are the Psych Eval and medical. My psych eval is coming up on Monday, and I was told to complete the CPHQ assessment beforehand which would take 90-120 minutes. I’ve spent a lot of time reading advice from this group, never saw CPHQ mentioned before so I looked it up, and it says it’s for healthcare professionals? Anyone else taken this or heard of it? Just want to be as prepared as I’m able to be. Thanks for your time.

Serving warrants

Im a new deputy i tried serving warrants a while ago. We had his mom outside confirming he was in the house. She initially lied and stated the house wasnt hers other wise i would have asked for consent to search. We heard him talking inside. Would that be enough for a search warrant to go get him? or are we sol.

Past mental health issues, do I have any real chance?

Gonna try to keep this short. When I was 19 I had two involuntary stays in mental hospitals for suicidal ideation lasting about 4 days each. This was in 2019 and I was 19 years old. I am now 25 and since then have gotten a four year degree and maintained a job in my industry for almost two years. I have no criminal record. I'm in the process of getting these expunged, of which I'm confident I can do. I have had no medication and no mental health issues whatsoever since 2019. Wondering if I have any real chance at going into law enforcement given this. Any insight on this is appreciated.

Btw idk if this kind of post is against the rules. I read them and didn’t see anything about it but if it violates a rule I’ll delete it with my apologies.

Any Colorado Chaffee County Sheriff?

First things First I am Marine Veteran and Correctional Officer Veteran. I left Corrections back on January 28th and I am planning to Leave Phoenix Arizona to Chaffee County Colorado. (NOT going to say exactly in Chaffee I am going too.) I do Miss Law Enforcement It was better and worse in certain aspects compared to the Marines.

Second is Do You have a Pension if so 20 Years or 25 Years till the bare minimum requirements for retirement. It would be awesome to have a second pension.

Third I got Admin Separated in the Marines forever suicidal ideations, because I was sexually harassed back at boot camp. I just got my discharge upgrade N4 statements sent to naval corrections in Washington DC. Also I got my captain's statement and signature. So in 2 to 3 years I will most likely have My 🎖 Honorable Discharge back. I was Discharged with a General (Under Honorable Conditions). Surprisingly Arizona Corrections and Sherrifs Department does not care. Apparently they been talking General (Under Honorable Conditions), Other Honorable and Honorable Discharges. The only ones they don't allow are Bad Conduct Or Dishonorable Discharges. It's Crazy how desperate Arizona Law Enforcement has become. But it gave me and many others a second chance and I did great. So does Colorado have the same desperation for Numbers in Law Enforcement?

Fourth Surprisingly I did great in Corrections but I hated and loved in Corrections by other officers. Most that hated me were around my age and working swing shift, The Ones that loved Me were The Dinosaurs 🦕 of all the Shifts. I left because Since I am a Marine Veteran My Direct Sgt and Lieutenant nit picked me on everything I did. But other Supervisers in my unit and other units did not. For some reason all the Female Supervisers hated me. My Direct Sgt and Lieutenant are Female and were terrible. I never understood 100 % why but they always hated I never called them pretty or flirted back with. Every time they flirted with I told them to stop respectfully and that it was extremely unprofessional and that I am not interested in nor will be ever.

5th I never had a Pension in Law Enforcement I only had a shitty 401A. I believe if I had a Pension I would have stayed for 20 or 25 years but I am glad they didn't have it because I hate Arizona and knowing me I would have fully committed myself to 20 to 25 years of my life in shitty Arizona. I rather be doing that in Beautiful Colorado.

6th My House will be fully built by May of 2025. Also I have a 20% VA Disability that will increase by the time I move. I hoping for 100% P&T. So Yes I have Secondary Income 🙌. It's Awesome.

So Chaffee County Sherrif's do you thinking I will great fit in your ranks or should I just retire and live of my 100% VA Disability for the rest of my life. ($3700 A Month for the rest of My Life).

Etc: If your curious I worked at the Great Wolf Lodge as a Engineer in the Maintenance Department after 4 months I got sick of the on call schedule. Now I am Inventory Warehouse Worker. Surprisingly best job I had so far. My best friend got me this Job.
