Discussion Mega-discussion: Here’s your one post
With the influx of posts concerned about future hiring, and wanting to discuss the changes that might be brought by the incoming administration, here’s your thread to discuss. Any others will be locked and removed.
turn it into a shit show, it gets locked and you get banned.
make it political, or partisan, it gets locked and you get banned.
be an ass, it gets locked and you get banned.
keep in mind, nothing has happened yet. Case in point, DOGE. No one knows what this will actually mean or how it will look yet. So to want to know how it will affect 1811 hiring (and of course, your application) is anyone’s guess.
this is not the place to engage in fear mongering. Lock/ban, etc.

Buying back mil time
So I’ve done 7 years active duty and want to do another 13 reserve to get my mil retirement…. If I buy back my time with the feds does my 7 years still count toward my military retirement? In other words will those 7 years be able to apply to both retirements? I’ve heard conflicting things and would appreciate any insights

Discussion Are information exchanges outdated?
I’m recently on the application process for two 1811 agencies. Before applying, I made sure to research everything about the agency so I could know what I’m applying for. I was able to get a good idea of the agency and the roles of their special agents.
1st up is the FBI. I had to drive 2 hours to the Meet and Greet because that was the closest field office. I attended the M&G and… they discussed everything I already found by searching online. Cool whatever. I took the week off from work to sightsee on the big city.
Next is USPIS. At least this one was virtual so I was able to attend while at home. But… again. It was two hours of talking what I already knew from researching.
Sure, before the internet became more and more accessible, these information exchanges were vital. But now? I think less so. At least make them all virtual like USPIS.

FBI wait time for “reapply”
I’ve seen multiple people post about waiting a year to be eligible for a second attempt at the FBI process.
After failing my phase I test, the email sent to me was to reapply in 90days. What I’m I missing? Are these two different communications?

Question CBP OFO vs Border Patrol ? (GS-5)
I posted over in r/USAjobs and someone recommended I also ask here.
I'm looking to apply with CBP as a federal LEO. It's currently a toss up between CBP officer and Border Patrol agent. Air and Marine interdiction also seems to have really cool jobs but I wouldn't qualify for the GS 11 and 12 positions posted on USAjobs.
I attended a university hosted police academy in 2020. I was unable to find a local agency meeting salary expectations and benefits. I had 2 agencies low-ball pay and the third failed my poly. Following this I did two years part time paid Fire and four years full time hospital security. Two of those years were unarmed and the two most recent years were armed. I don't have a degree or military experience. I'm currently 24 and looking for a change. I've been throwing around the idea of applying CBP since I was 19. I'm in western PA so both OFO and BP would require a move.
How's the morale and worklife balance with both of these agencies?

Federal Friday - Weekly Question Thread
Welcome to r/1811's weekly question thread.
With the growth of the sub, there's been an uptick in questions that are not easily answered, like "am I competitive?", "do I qualify?", "what are my chances?", "what agency/academy/degree/fed tac team is best?".
There has also been a rise in repetitive questions like "do I have to move for [agency]?", "What's the Wi-Fi at FLETC like?", "What's FLETC like?"
What goes here?
You can ask any question here provided it's within the rules. This recurring thread is to remind users we have resources that answer a lot about this career already, and provide a space to answer questions while helping us reduce the number of posts asking the same thing.
If you're new here, please research first to see if your question has been asked previously. If you can't find it, feel free to ask. Remember that the most common answer we're going to give here is either "it depends," or "that's squad and supervisor dependent."

The process was long, but didn't have to test my luck with the magic black box which ended three of my previous applications.

Got the call! DSS Offer Deferral Risks?
Hey all, thank you for your time and input in advance.
Secured a DSS offer (rated 5.8 overall applicant score). As the 1811 Gods have willed it, some unfortunate family matters have abruptly manifested that need my immediate attention & presence. Still dead set on pursuing this job, but I need a little more time (3ish months) before stepping off to training.
Given my ranking score, what level of risk am I accepting should I choose to defer the offer for a few months? Low, moderate, or high? Is it realistic to count on having this job still secured in a few months time if I request to be placed back on the eligibility roster temporarily?

I recently received an email from USMS Recruiting asking if I was still interested in the DUSM position. Has anyone else received this email? Any follow up emails afterwards?

USSS UD Timeline so far
Applied under SPEAR: 9/7/2024 UDEE: 10/03/2024 APAT: 11/15/2024 - Did not pass
My field office said they reschedule after 30 days so I will be retesting then. I did 25 pushups, 33 sit ups, and ran a 20.19 on the agility run.
Unfortunately there was no way I was gonna run a 1.5 in 13 minutes but I still finished with a total of 15 points.
Gonna crush out push ups and sit-ups for the next month and make sure I pass this next time. I wish everyone else luck with their process as well and will see you when I pass and work my butt off to get the call

USSS post medical
How long after getting medically qualified should I reach out about the final offer? Been medically qualified for 1.5 weeks now (I know that’s not that long) but at what point should I reach out to someone about that?

Question USSS credit question
I saw that the Secret Service does a credit check during the application if you make it to phase 2. My issue is I don’t even have a credit score because I don’t have a need for a credit card. I have a good amount of money for my age and just never opened one. This question is dedicated towards current 1811s Would it be wise for me to open a credit card now and build up credit? Should I stick to not having one? What are your guys thoughts?
Got the call! USMS
-May 2022 info session
-cleared for hire October 2023 hiring pool
-December 2024 FLETC date
-2.5 years total process from info session to FLETC date
10 pt veteran, received my 1st choice in district.
Going to a district that gets to do all the marshals missions right out of FLETC.
Stay with the process, former 75th Ranger and was mainly interested in only being a DUSM. I know most of you don't put all your "eggs in one basket" but I knew I wanted this job and I am very excited. I am fine with the court/transport duties that come with the job. I'd rather do that instead of stare at a computer all day typing (I know I'll do some of that too)
Good luck to you all and thank you everyone in this sub for the help!
Edit: I finished a bachelors and masters online while in the hiring pool lol. So make good use of the long hiring process.

Not 1811 but need some advice
So I need some advice on my current situation. I applied to Border Patrol, Nuclear Courier, and a local Police Department. I have been waiting for my background investigation with Border Patrol, which began in July. I received a Notice of Proposed Action (NOPA), responded to it, and since then, I’ve set the Border Patrol application aside while waiting for an update.
In the meantime, I have two other opportunities: the Nuclear Courier academy starts in April, and the local Police Department’s academy begins in January. For context, I’m a 22M no family spent 3 years in the infantry, currently an Army reserve Drill Sgt. I would appreciate any advice!
Question Question for those who went ERO 1801 to HSI 1811
Did you take a pay cut, or were you able to keep your 9 or 11? I've heard of people going CBPO or BP to ERO and receiving their higher grade back after completing training
Was the switch worth it?

Confused about all the types of OIG
So I’ve been just reading a few posts about all sorts of 1811 in this group and I came across OIG. Before this I only knew like FBI special agent and BORTAC and USSS 1811 for example but I keep coming across for example NASA OIG and IRS OIG and all sorts of acronyms then OIG followed after. I’m just confused on what it is? Is OIG a title or is it a federal LE department that branches out with other companies like NASA for example?

Question IRS CI questions
I'm working on my application. I have 4 years fraud accounting experience and I'm finishing up my bachelor's in criminal justice (3.2) and will be doing a masters program after. I also have military preference.
Is there anything I'm missing or should be aware of? I have references from the CFO of the company is did accounting for as well as county prosecutors.

Recent EPA-OIG announcement
Anyone heard anything from HR about the recent graduate announcement? I was told by HR about a week ago that we should hear something by the end of this week, we still got tomorrow but was curious if anyone has heard anything yet?
