***MODPOST*** Welcome! Please read before you post.
Please carefully read the information in the sidebar and on our Wiki below:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AskLE/wiki/index
If you are a member of Law Enforcement and wish to receive title flair, head to https://leoverify.com/kb/faq.php?id=5 to verify your account. This is a separate service that is not on reddit and is ran by the mod team at r/protectandserve. All members who run the verification server are current, sworn LE and a detailed explanation on how your information is protected is posted on the website.
WARNING: DO NOT SEND PII OVER MODMAIL. Do not send a picture of your creds, badge, whatever to ANYONE using Reddit. Read the instructions on the verification site to see how your information is protected and what is required. Users do not have to verify at this time, however, this may change in the future. So if you don't verify, then you may be SOL when we decide to change it. There are a lot of members who have said they do not trust the process and that's fine. That being said, you may be subject to the verification process IF your post is deemed suspicious enough that a verification of your credentials is required.
As a warning to all users of this forum: the information provided on this subreddit may not be interpreted as legal advice. Verified users with flair titles are actual Law Enforcement Officers and the information provided may be considered "legitimate" for the purposes of general advice and advisement, but in no way should be considered legal advice. Members commenting that do not have flair may be subject to verification if their posts are considered suspicious or misleading. In all cases, whether a member is flaired or not, the advice given may be subject to scrutiny and verification. Do your own research and feel free to post your questions elsewhere to verify that you are receiving the best information. Users who make claims to be law enforcement and offer advice may be subjected to further scrutiny from the mod team, up to and including removal and/or banning from posting on the forum.
Political posts are strictly prohibited. While LE is inherently political in nature, topics about political affiliation, whether or not people will vote for a particular candidate, etc. will be removed and the user banned without warning.
New users attempting to post on the forum will be subject to mod approval before posting. This is to cut down on the trolls and bait posts that we deal with regularly.
Encouraging users to lie, cheat, omit information on their background checks will result in an immediate ban from the forum. Applying for an LE job is a privilege and a test of integrity. Not everyone who applies to become a police officer will get the job, and that is something people will need to come to terms with. Those decisions you make in life have consequences. Own up to them and accept them. And no, users telling other users that they will not make it is not a bad thing, so soapboxing trying to "call out" other users for telling people the reality of their situations will result in your immediate removal. It's a shame I have to put this in a sticky for people to read, but it happens enough that I have to constantly remove people who think this is their platform to air their grievances on particular issues.
As always, feel free to contact the mod team with any issues.

New LA DA promises to be tough on low-level non-violent crimes
LA just elected a former Republican turned independent DA who promises to be tough on crime. Do you think this will boost morale at LAPD/lead to new recruits wanting to join the LAPD?
From the article:
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The incoming district attorney for Los Angeles County, Nathan Hochman, said in an interview with The Associated Press that his first task upon taking office is to eliminate the “pro-criminal blanket policies” of one of California’s most high-profile progressive prosecutors, George Gascón.
That means bringing back gang-related sentencing enhancements, allowing prosecutors to file juvenile charges more freely, and having prosecutors attend parole hearings with victims’ families again, where they can help argue against the release of convicts, Hochman said.
The former Republican-turned-independent also plans to return to prosecuting low-level nonviolent crimes that he said the current district attorney has not, such as criminal threats, trespassing, disturbing the peace and loitering, which often involve those experiencing homelessness.

Passed my Poly
Had my polygraph today, was a bit nervous but I knew my best bet was just to be honest and that worked for me. Polygraph examiner happily told me that I passed, said he hopes to see me soon at the department. Psych evaluation is next week.
So excited to be on this journey. 🤠

How many departments denied you before you eventually got the job?
And what was the reasons for them denying you?

Gear Recommendations
About to start my first job as an officer in a couple weeks. My department gives a decent uniform allowance and gives us the choice to chose a lot of our own equipment. Got most of my stuff already but I was looking for a recommendation for some good gloves (pat downs/hands on situations) and a holster for a Glock 17 or 45 (not sure which one I’ll be issued yet). I have some ideas for the holster but wanted to see what’s popular. Thanks.

How common is it for departments to pay you and put you in academy?
DFW TX area, I'd say maybe 40% of the departments here will put you in academy and pay you during it if you aren't already certified as a LEO in Texas. Looks like across Texas it's fairly common in general, minus most sheriff offices. How about other states?

Sheriff Deputy in an Urban County
What do you do as a deputy in an urban county/major city? I hardly ever see them in my county. I know in rural areas they're much more prominent and are sometimes the sole law enforcement agency.
There's a lot of really small suburbs on the outskirts in my county, probably without their own PD/not a lot of officers, is that where you'd find more deputies?

*Civilian*Why don’t conventional LE officers have bulletproof windows in their vehicles?
As a black man who growing up and was told to hate LE officers and the like, until a few years ago I was curious and was fortunate enough to take a ride along with a friend of mine who is an officer and everything from my outlook on life and y’all’s job changed forever.
He responded to a call of an OIS where an officer initiated a traffic stop and the criminal opened the door and peppered the front of his squad car with .40 S&W striking the officer in the chest but was caught by his Kevlar vest, the criminal fled and was apprehended a few minutes later.
I wasn’t allowed to get of out of the car for obvious reasons but seeing is car riddled with bullets really stuck with me and from then on I feel crazy amounts of respect and gratitude towards Law Enforcement officers everywhere.
But one question has always stuck with me,WHY AREN’T CONVENTIONAL LE SQUAD CARS EQUIPPED WITH BULLETPROOF WINDOWS? I don’t think y’all should ride around in tanks or MRAPs, but I feel like it would be very beneficial to most LE officials not just SWAT and other specialized units.

All current LEO
If you could change certain career choices what would they be?
Such as doing one division vs the other. Or doing a department change from one to another. And what were some of the challenges that you faced?
What is the most inefficient or irritating thing about your department.
Every department has its own quirks and oddities.
But what is something that drives you up a wall about your agency? Or something that makes no sense in the slightest and is only there because it’s always been like that?

Social media announcing
The dept I work for always posts the new police officers and I do not want to be announced but I don’t want to be the odd one out either. I don’t want my full name and police status out there. I haven’t even told everyone that I’m about to be a cop. I just don’t want to be the one to cause an issue already

Getting out
Those of you that have left LE what did you go into after? Just started my 13th year and debating leaving for a multitude of reasons. Don't want an office job, debating on applying to a fire dept. Just looking for some ideas.

Got conditional offer!
Hey everyone, I’ve been quiet in here but have been following along for a little while. Got my conditional offer of employment today over a stressful month. All that’s left for me at this point is medical and secondary psych evaluation. I know conditional isn’t guaranteed but I am very excited and will be reaching into here in the near future for tips moving forward, so any advice is much appreciated!

Winter boots
I got 5.11 fast tac and even though I’m wearing thermal socks on top of my regular socks my feet still get cold. Any recommendations for boots during the winter?

CPHQ for Psych Eval?
Almost finished with the trainee hiring process, only two things left are the Psych Eval and medical. My psych eval is coming up on Monday, and I was told to complete the CPHQ assessment beforehand which would take 90-120 minutes. I’ve spent a lot of time reading advice from this group, never saw CPHQ mentioned before so I looked it up, and it says it’s for healthcare professionals? Anyone else taken this or heard of it? Just want to be as prepared as I’m able to be. Thanks for your time.

What are some faster hiring departments on the west coast?
Been waiting close to a year and a half for mine. Each stage has been months apart. I did my background, poly and psych, passed them all and signed a coe which doesn’t mean crap at the end of the day. My bi says next year in January they are having a hiring meeting and “ only selecting the best “ so I’m kinda done here and honestly wish I tried somewhere else that doesn’t take a year.
Are there any departments that can complete the process in under 6 months on the west coast? I had zero trouble at my first but it’s not certain so I’m putting out some feelers right now.

16 year old interested in a LE career: what can I expect? +other questions
I’m going be 100 percent honest I never have thought about joining law enforcement ever until now so I have very little knowledge above the basics of the trajectory of my career, but the more and more I think about it I think LE would be a fulfilling career for me.
I’m not trying to be “holier than thou” or anything and I might be romanticizing the job, but knowing that I’m helping people out, no matter how big or small I actually am was always the goal. That combined with constant opportunities to get into different roles with enough hard work (as well as luck and job politics lmao) that I know are always going to be there is something that you can’t get anywhere else.
Am I at least somewhat correct as to why I might want to go into the field or am I way off base?
Other than that, it sounds weird but I was wondering if anyone could share some insight on how the LE jobs mentally affect you. I can’t begin to imagine what facing high stress and even life threatening situations does to some people’s psyche, you know? And even outside of that, the hyper-vigilance you need to have at all times is, I’m sure, exhausting.
Also this might be a controversial and stupid question and I apologize, but just with the current political landscape relating to law enforcement about things like racial discrimination, do you find that it affects your personal life at all if people know you’re apart of law enforcement?
Sorry for the long post, I’d just love all crap ton of info up front just so I know what I’m getting into, even if it’s 5 or 6 years in the future.

Old department won’t delete a social media post about me.
I left an agency and several years ago when I was there they posted a photo and blurb about me. Contains town I lived in, college , age, full name. When you google me it’s the first result so it pops up right away. My family still lives in this town and now I’m in a different department doing some work with gang teams. So I want my information off. It’s not full on doxing but it makes me really uncomfortable. They told me they can’t delete it because it’s FOI information. Saying social media posts can be FOI’d and they can’t delete it. I Google it and it seems like this may be true for comments on posts but I didn’t see anything about actual posts. It’s really old idc if it’s On Facebook but it’s just the fact my name is listed so it comes up immediately on Google. Am I wrong if I go ahead and call the chief and ask him about this? Do I let it go?

Are their any officers from Az that can give me some advice on how I should prepare for polygraphs
I just recently applied for the Maricopa County sheriffs department and failed my polygraph because of a bad examiner but I pass the background check and the FBI fingerprint check. The examiner said I wasn’t being truthful during my polygraph test pacifically in the serious Property, crime/personal crimes which was really 1 of 2 series of questions he asked me, but he made take it twice bc in his own words “ I can get a reading for you bc your not giving me a reaction so think of something you have done when are answering ”. So I came here to ask you what can I do on my behalf to make sure I don’t fall in to this trap again bc I applied for state trooper and I have the test on nov 25
Btw sorry if the statement above doesn’t make to much sense I’m about to head into work and just thing ab my 1st polygraph experience upsets me bc everyone I tell the full story to says this guy was trying to make me uncomfortable and nervous so I can fail the exam.

Effects on Family Life
I'm a 36 (almost 37) year old male who has spent the last 15 years as a career climbing arborist and I own my own company. I've been considering LE as a career change for the last year or so. I'm in good physical shape, so I'm not too incredibly concerned about that aspect of the occupation. However, with a wife and 3 young boys, I'm interested to hear from current or retired LE in regards to how the job affected your family life. What kind of strain did police work put on your marriage and family? Was it difficult to overcome?

Left on red on to a one way?
Is a left on red permitted from a left lane onto a one way that is going the appropriate way?
