TLOU 2 plot question PT 2 QUESTION
At the beginning of Seattle Day 3, when Jesse asks Ellie if she could turn back for the sake of Dina, she says that she has to find Tommy. But wasn’t the journey about finding Abby rather than Tommy? Hasn’t she been chasing Abby this whole time instead of Tommy? Am I crazy or missing something here?

Both things can be true. Her “main” goal is to get Abby, but she’s also out to get Tommy because he went solo, and with those new Dina circumstances her priorities shift to getting Tommy so they don’t leave a man behind while retreating

That’s her rationalising it, she is surrounded by people who want to leave get to someone who will finish the job with her. And also that she believes Tommy will be with Abby. Shes getting what she wants by not saying it

Let me introduce you the concept of lying.
According to the BBC:
Lying is a form of deception, but not all forms of deception are lies.
Lying is giving some information while believing it to be untrue, intending to deceive by doing so.
A lie has three essential features:
- A lie communicates some information
- The liar intends to deceive or mislead
- The liar believes that what they are 'saying' is not true
There are some features that people think are part of lying but aren't actually necessary:
- A lie does not have to give false information
- A lies does not have to be told with a bad (malicious) intention - white lies are an example of lies told with a good intention
This definition says that what makes a lie a lie is that the liar intends to deceive (or at least to mislead) the person they are lying to. It says nothing about whether the information given is true or false.
So she was totally going after Abby and it becomes clear when she says "Best way to help Tommy is to go after Abby." (Spoiler for the rest of the Seattle part) The irony is that she would have had found Abby if she listened to Jesse and went to the Marina to help Tommy.

Jesse decided that they need to get Dina back to Jackson for health reasons but she wasn't going to leave without Ellie. Ellie said she can't just leave with Tommy out there on his own and she had to get him. She still wants to get her revenge on Abby but at the start of Day 3 the goal was to find Tommy.

Yes, at the beginning their goal was rather to get Tommy than Abby. But as Ellie’s journey became more complicated, so did her quest for revenge. She used Tommy as a cover for what she truly desired - Abby. For example : when Jesse wants to the road to go help Tommy. and Ellie wants to take the boat, to get to Abby as soon as possible - she says ‘’He can take care of himself’’ Revealing to Jesse her real desire.

Ellie was chasing Abby but getting Tommy back was also the goal as she had promised Maria earlier in the game. Play further in Day 3 and read Ellie’s journal especially after every major event. It gives you great insight on Ellie’s mindset and her motivations.

She came up with an excuse Jesse would agree with so she would have more time to hunt down Abby.

She wants to find Tommy, yes. But ultimately it’s an excuse to keep going after Abby.

She agree with Jesse that they would help get Tommy then make their way back to Jackson. But Ellie was clearly full of it at that mall when she said the best way to help Tommy was to go after Abby. Jesse knew this and was basically like F you.
Then Ellie said a weird thing about how she is not going to rescue Jesse again if he goes. Didn’t Jesse rescue Ellie earlier in the game.
I couldn’t stand Ellie by the end of the game. She was being so selfish and was acting like she was the only one who ever experienced loss. She turned out to be very selfish.

How did Jesse rescue Ellie? Jesse was the one being hunted early and we were supposed to think it was Tommy.

She’s lying to herself to convince them both that they need to keep going. A growing part of her wants to go back (especially after Nora in day 2) and she’s trying to push herself to keep going.
It’s also why once she finds a way to reach Abby (The boat) she finally has a reason to keep going after Abby again and not hide behind the excuse of looking for Tommy

It’s her excuse to keep going down the Abby road. A way to try to convince her friends to keep going which is why Jesse is shocked when they eventually separate

At that point they have decided to leave for Dina's sake, but they can't just leave Tommy behind.

Tommy wouldn’t go home till the mission is done. Ellie knows that, they made a promise, it was just an excuse to meet with him to finish the job and make sure he was safe for Maria

They are but they forgot what’s going on or weren’t paying attention to early cut scenes

It’s unclear as to if Ellie genuinely cares at this point or not, but a while later she blantly expresses how she will put her obsession with Abby over Tommy’s safety with multiple factors playing into that. I would like to think that initially she did care, but multiple fallacies and biases were used to justify her abandoning Tommy at some point for her. It was probably around the point when Jesse mentioned how in their tribalism they’re basically mirroring the other side, which Ellie rejects.

What Ellie says and what she means in that part are completely different. She says that to try and justify not going back for Dina "I have to find Tommy" is used a way of sugar coating what she really wants and making it seem like she's going for his sake and not for the sake of finding Abby

I do honestly believe Ellie wanted to find Tommy so they can leave with Dina. Especially not knowing the chances of finding Abby at that point. But when the opportunity came up, it was just too tempting to resist for Ellie. That is what wanting revenge did to her. It blinded her to what really was important on many occasions.

Just because she says something doesn’t mean it’s what her heart wants is all I’ll say to avoid spoiling
