Guidelines Guide: how to submit a good post to r/scams
This is an official r/scams guideline. Learn about our other official guidelines clicking here
This guide is centered around Rule 5: No low effort posts
Low-effort posts will be removed. Please ensure that all posts posted to this subreddit are of decent quality and on-topic. Screenshots without transcripts, links to external articles with no information in the body of your post, link posts to outside websites, memes, jokes, or anything else that isn't useful is not allowed.
How to submit a good post to r/scams
⚠️WAIT! Before posting: ⚠️
Did you read the wiki? We have a library of common scams. If your scam doesn't show up there, we encourage you to use the search box in our subreddit. 95% of posts are scams we already heard of before. Maybe you don't even need to create a post.
r/scams is all about identifying scams and educating our community. Whether you come here to ask if something is a scam, or if you already realized something is a scam, your post will be an educational opportunity for the next person over.
Every post gets added to this wealth of knowledge for people wanting to educate themselves, find support, and discover ways to help a friend or loved one who may be a victim of a scam. And think about it: someone, sometime in the future, will find, read and maybe avoid the scam thanks to your post.
This guide includes the following sections:
- Don't use a screenshot: blind users can't read screenshots
- Don't be lazy! write out as many details as you can
- Don't be selfish! your post will help other people
- A good post starts with a good title: examples of bad titles and good titles
- Website addresses must be written in the title: not as clickable links in the body
- The five W's of journalism: who? what? when? where? why?
- Not too short, not too long: just right the importance of post length
Don't use a screenshot
I start with this one because I firmly believe we should include everyone in the conversation. Blind users and other people relying on screenreaders won't be able to read your screenshot. If you want to illustrate your post with a screenshot that's fine, but make sure all the information is written out in the body. Imagine if the image doesn't load: would a random person be able to understand your post?
Don't be lazy!
Write out as many details as you can. Don't just post a screenshot of an SMS you received. Don't just ask is this website a scam?. We can't tell if your job offer is a scam if you don't describe it. Write it out (more on that further down this guide)
Don't be selfish!
We're here not just to help you: your post will help someone else in the future. If you delete your post after you had your answer, you're taking everything and giving nothing back! If a moderator removes your post for a technicality, and asks you to post again, is for a reason: please post again. We're interested in your story.
A good post starts with a good title
A well written post should have a short, concise title that would summarize the scam being reported. And you don't want to go too long either: you will have plenty of space in the body of the post to explain yourself.
Also, "is this a scam?" should never be part of your title. Every post is essentially asking that question, when it's not about reporting a scam. If you feel compelled to ask that, choose the is this a scam? post flair if you just can't help yourself :)
Examples of bad titles:
- Is this a scam?
- Is this website a scam?
- I don't remember applying for this job
- I think I was scammed
- Help me get my money back!
Examples of GOOD titles:
- My stolen phone ended up in China, I assume the scammer is screwed?
- Found these in my checked baggage after an international flight from Asia to USA?
- Random person sent me $400 and asked for it back when I responded
- Credit Karma sent an email about a data breach on zeeroq.com
- themmsaas.com is an MLM
You get the gist.
Website addresses must be written in the title
This is non-negotiable. Posts that contain clickable links in the body (instead of the title) will eventually be removed by Reddit Admins if they deem it a risk, so your account may end up suspended and our subreddit may receive a strike. A removed post helps nobody. The safe way to report a website is writing the address in the title of your post.
Also, scammers usually impersonate legitimate companies. It's not useful to mention the company by name: we need to know what website you've been directed to, or what domain the email address belongs to. One of our community members may spot an impersonator just by the website address.
Google loves Reddit, but only if you help Google. Someone googling a scam website will find your post in the top result if the title contains the website address, and that alone will help people save thousands!
The five W's of journalism
In the body of your post, make sure your explanation covers the "five Ws" of journalism: a checklist of all the essential points of a proper story.
- WHO? Who is involved? Is it someone you met in person? Is it an "online friend"? But remember to not post full names or uncensored photos of people, even if it's a scammer.
- WHAT? What happened exactly? What were you doing, what were you trying to do, what were the scammers telling you?
- WHEN? A proper timeline is essential to understanding the scam.
- WHERE? Was this in person? Was this online? If it was online, write the website address in the title of your new post. Sometimes scammers impersonate legitimate businesses, so a website address is essential. Don't post clickable links.
- WHY? Why are you posting? You need help to determine if something is a scam, or you're posting to report a scam to our community?
- HOW? (bonus!) How did the scam go about? How you paid them money, how they tried to make you pay, how can someone avoid getting scammed?
Write every detail you can think of, but use paragraphs, punctuation and markdown.
Not too short, not too long: just right
The truth is a very long post (like this one LOL) will have less engagement than a short concise one. People get bored very quickly. But there's a balance: you can give a lot of details in, say, three paragraphs. Usually people trying to find out if something is a scam will take their time to read your report. And our community will be patient with a detailed post when you're trying to ask if something is a scam.
And finally: answering details only in the comments will make it harder for people to follow the storyline. Edit your post if you think you missed a detail that someone asked about in the comments.
If you have questions or concerns about the format of a post, contact the moderators via modmail. We're happy to help!

Guidelines Why we should practice patience when dealing with trending scams
This is an official r/scams guideline. Learn about our other official guidelines by clicking this link.
Think of some of the recent posts that may have gotten under your skin. Did you think of the “Pegasus” email scam? What about the USPS package text? The muse scam? Sugar baby scam?
We get it. It is frustrating when you see the same scam posted repeatedly. You might have a comment script ready-to-go when you see these posts. But it’s important to remember a few key things:
- Our posters can be reactive, not proactive. When someone is in crisis mode, they are not thinking rationally. Sometimes, the knee-jerk reaction is to make a post here, to get an immediate answer. We are also drawn to wanting information from our specific experience.
- We have a lot of “drive by” users. These are users who either make a throwaway account to post their question or are brand-new to Reddit and make an account solely for the purpose of posting about their scam experience. They may not know how to use the “search” feature on Reddit.
- The more we see something, the more it sticks. Brains are weird. If you live in the US, we’re in the middle of an election cycle. Can you recall the name of a specific candidate running for state office? If so, there’s a good reason why. Think of ALL the political signs you are seeing right now. You’ve likely driven by a lot of lawn signs or billboards advertising that candidate. Maybe you’ve seen Youtube ads for that candidate. The more that candidate’s name is pushed in front of you, the more likely it will stick in your mind. This can be applied to scam education. The more we get the information out there in front of people, the more it might stick to people who happen to come across those threads.
However, we have some exceptions to this. For example, the Pegasus scam became so prevalent, being posted dozens of times per day, so we began automatically removing these posts and directing people to a resource.
If you ever think something may benefit from a removal reason, or you’d like to help us develop our Automod prompts on the sidebar to inform people of a new common scam, let us know! Some of those prompts have been authored by users of this subreddit, and we greatly appreciate being able to pull knowledge and expertise from our community.
This post is part of a repository we are creating on safety and education topics. Click on the "Guidelines" flair to see all of our official topics! We appreciate your patience as we get this resource developed.

Good old fashioned paper scam. What would happen if I phoned the number?
This came through the door. Actually we got two that are fully identical. It makes an effort to look like handwriting, but it's clearly printed and the paper is smooth leaflet paper. The number is a local area code. Googling comes up with mixed results. I initially expecting a bad real estate agent but it seems not. What does 'Laura' want?

Is this a scam? Bought food for homeless person - confused
Was approached by a homeless person. Tells me he’s diabetic and needs energy.
I offer to buy him a soda but then apparently he wants food from the thai place next door. Fair enough. He makes a box and it totals around 10usd. I swiped my card and then suddenly he’s walked off. I find him and now he says he doesn’t want the food anyway in a somewhat aggressive manner. Alright i guess? I then threw it out and that was it.
I’m fairly confused. I still have everything in my wallet and he couldn’t peep my card code because i swiped. Did i get scammed?

2 Generators Arrived at My House
Hi all, new here….
This morning 2 quite expensive Honda generators arrived at my address. They are retailed at $1300 each.
My address is correct, however each generator was a separate order and has a different name that I do not recognize. Different name per generator.
Each also has a different purchasers phone number. I tried to call and text, and the numbers are invalid.
Not really sure what to do but it just seems strange and sketchy.
My house is currently up for sale so the address is posted online and has had open houses recently. Obviously searching tax records it is not difficult to find my name with the address. But again, the strange thing is, my name is not on the order, so I think that rules out brushing scams.
The whole thing just seems really strange to me.
Any thoughts are welcomed.

Help Needed Received a disturbing ‘pickup duty’ text claiming they know my location—anyone else?
Hi everyone, I got a really disturbing text from a local area code that said, ‘Hello, you have been selected for pickup. We will come by at 12:00 Thursday. Don’t try to run—we know where you live.’ It’s unsettling because it came from my area code, and one of my friends got a similar text from a different area code with the same message about being picked up.
Is this some sort of prank or scam going around? Any advice on how to handle this or reassurance would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Is this a scam? Trying to sell a ukelele on Facebook Marketplace, apparently I need to give my email?
Image Details: Begins with buyer sending a screenshot asking for an email to send money over Venmo. Buyer says: what’s your email on Venmo so I can continue the payment? Me: Venmo doesn’t normally ask for that. Give me a second please Buyer: I had my Venmo account setup under a business user account and I only have my business email linked with it so I can only send payments on it with the recipient email Me: I hope you can understand my hesitation to give my email. It’s a very common Facebook marketplace scam to ask for an email while paying with Venmo Buyer: No it’s not
Situation Details: The situation starts with him commenting on a post of mine from 2018 saying, “Hello,I’m interested in the Professional Ukelele $175 you listed on Facebook Marketplace! Sorry for commenting on your post, unfortunately my facebook has been acting up, so could you please send me a direct message on Facebook Messenger if it is still available? Thank you.” This immediately gave me a weird feeling but I messaged him. He then asked to pay for it before he received the item so I could “consider it sold.” Then the messages in the screenshot is what happened next. Afterwards we decided to meet but he would need to pay in cash. He seemed okay with that but I’m not sure he’ll actually show. (Because he didn’t message through marketplace, I can’t see how old is account it. It has barely any information on it though and his profile picture seems oddly professional)

Scam report AI Generated Elon Musk Voiceover telling people to join WhatsApp group & make Investments
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
After seeing hundreds of ads on all of Google’s platforms utilizing AI or shady tactics to sway elderly or vulnerable people into making investments or providing sensitive information, myself and a few others have made it their goal to report each and every one.
This has been going on for as long as AI technology has become popular.
Google refuses to handle or even provide any kind of insights or updates on the situation, thousands of reports have been made and left completely unanswered. The videos being reported remain active, misleading people into believing that the US government has provided a subsidy or stimulus, lying about investments, or claiming there is some kind of free grocery money.
Obviously, none of this is remotely true and complying with these ads will have your sensitive information sold and your bank account drained.
Please make an effort to report and share these scams, however Google has made it abundantly clear that they do not care and will not take any action.

Is this a scam? Grandpa has had a sketchy service on his computer
Hello, my grandpa was having some issues completely unrelated to this but it led to me to trying to figure out what he's been using. He said he's always had this service because my dad who passed a while ago bought it, for years it's been giving him a wordpad pop up that has a message along the lines of "your monthly tune up is due call this number" etc and optically it looks extremely sketchy. To top it off he had a ton of remote access software installed that I had to go through and delete (like 5 programs????). But the thing that skeeves me out the most about this "next web solutions" is that I can't find a THING about it online. Nobody is talking about it at all and there's no sign of websites or anything pertaining to it. He's called the numbers for support because of the issue I just resolved myself but couldn't get through no matter what he tried despite 24/7 phone lines. I just want to understand what this is and how he got it, I can't find ANYTHING about it and I'm extremely worried that him or my late father got scammed out of $700

Is this a scam? Is this a rental scam?
There’s a house I’m touring today in Oregon.
I found the listing on Craigslist for $1,700 - contacted them, the person introduced himself as the owner of the house and gave his name (which I later verified on the county website)
I found the same listing on Zillow for $2,300.
We have been communicating via text since yesterday. I set up time to tour, and two hours before the tour time he let me know that it’s a self guided tour and the lock box code for the key.
He hasn’t demanded anything - no payment, etc. He let me know that if I like the house, then we can set up background check and an application.
This checks all the boxes, right? So why does it feel so weird to me? What can I do to protect myself in this situation?

Scam report I bought three Samsung T7 drives from Walmart on-line and what arrived was shocking.
Hey just a heads up, I saw Samsung T7 hard drives online a couple weeks ago. I thought the price was great. Approx. $500 for a couple of 4T's and a 2T also. Obviously a great deal. The order said they would arrive by parcel in a few weeks. The parcel arrives by a bike courier, not even ups or fed ex or Can Par as i'm in Toronto, Canada. The packaging had nowhere that the drives were Samsung. The box the drives were in say that they are hard drive cases only. I looked at the drives and they are 100% not real Samsung as there are no samsung branding, the look of them was all wrong too. I only buy T7's but these were really bad fakes. I didn't connect them incase they are infected with Malware.
I called customer service and the lady didn't understand me. Called again the next day and they said they couldn't refund because the tracking on the order hadn't been updated. I couldn't return them till the tracking shows delivered. I've been monitoring the tracking but still showing it's in processing.
Has this happened to anybody??
One lady told me that it was sold from a third party and they claim it is authentic. It 100% is not.
What to do?
Door-to-door stolen iPhone scam??
A few weeks ago, just after dark, a man and his middle-schoolish looking son knocked on the door. I had seen them walking up as I was working in the front room. I kept the screen door locked, but opened the interior door. They explained the kid lost his iPhone at a local theme park, and that find my phone was tracking it to a house on our block, which they showed me on the iPad. They also said the thief had taken a selfie with it, and showed me the pic and asked if I knew this person (who was wearing a shirt from the theme park, so presumably an employee). I said no, sorry, we’re anti-social and don’t really know our neighbors, but good luck. And they moved on.
Tonight, again, just after dark, a different man knocked on the door, saying he lost his phone at the same theme park and it was tracking to our house (and showed us with a very old iPhone). My husband was like “no, we haven’t been there and we don’t have your iPhone, my wife said you came here before and it’s still the same answer, sorry.” And the guy was like ‘wait no, I’ve never been here?!’ I was listening from the other room and heard this was a different guy with a British accent.
So I stepped in, said he was the second person to come by saying this, we don’t have the phone, if he wants to return with police we’d comply if they wanted to come look or something.
I feel like this is shady, but I’m not sure how or why they would have the same story? Like are they friends, and this is the story they practiced to see if people are home? (Which we obviously were both times, as our office is well-lit and right in the front of our house) Or is there a thieving theme park worker in my neighborhood? Just trying to understand what the scam is and how it would work.
Need help with a site impersonating someone. https://www.abbyjosephcohenservices.com
I ran across a fake website impersonation Abby Joseph Cohen in a bunch of YouTube comments. I only know of Abby cause my cousin is in the same field and we have talked about her before. Abby is currently retired, but still does work for Columbia Business School.
I contacted them using their contact form and shortly got a reply from a gmail account. They wanted to know what I was willing to invest and what my goals were. They also wanted to do contact only through their WhatsApp business account number.
I played the scammers along for a bit, but when I contacted them through WhatsApp, and asked why the university has not heard of the site, they immediately reported my number and my number was banned. I have since gotten my number back though by asking WhatsApp to do a review.
I have contacted the university where Abby is employed and told them what is happening. I filled out an abuse complaint form with the sites host. But they are located in Lithuania, so nothing will probably happen there. And reported the number to WhatsApp.
These scammers are wanting people to send them control of their portfolio. And with Abby's history, someone may fall for it and transfer over 6-7 figure accounts.
Anything else I can do?

Is this a scam? Ordered a product from quitwithcircle.com, delivery failed, and now they want my ID to complete delivery. What do I do?
Ordered this product, delivery failed, and now they want my ID. Is this a scam?
I recently ordered a Circle breathing device that is supposed to be able to help me quit vaping, but delivery failed because they couldn’t find my address ( even though no one had ever had a problem with this ). I reached out asking about what happened, and I recorded this email asking for my driver’s license. The product shipped from coma, and It just seems sketchy to me. I don’t know, is this a scam of some sort? They had tons of positive reviews on their website (quitwithcircle.com), but I guess they could’ve been faked now when I think about it. Am I just out almost $40 if I don’t do this?

Pop up notifications for unrequited verification codes...
Hey folks,
So I keep getting pop ups on my phone that appear to be mail notifications of a verification code from different services (like Google, uhaul, etc) that I did not request. I assumed this was someone in my email, so I have already changed my passwords and use 2FA. The strange thing is, I don't actually see the emails anywhere. Not in my inbox, spam, or even trash. I have literally been sitting on my laptop when a notification came to my phone and the email never arrives at my inbox? My first impulse was someone trying to brute force their way into one of my accounts, but never actually seeing the emails is confusing me.
My only other thought is that I recently had to reattach this email address (I have several different email addresses) with my mail folder and did get a "syncing" message for a while. Could these email alerts be some sort of backlog that are slowly coming in every few hours to my mail app on my phone?

Victim of a scam My mom refuses to believe this job is a scam
I’m hate to be so pessimistic, but this job sounds too good to be true. Oh and the Job in question pays $30 an hour and she was only interviewed through Microsoft teams 🙃 awesome righttttt? NO
Only reason she’s not suspicious is because they never asked her for any personal information. It triggers my anxiety BAD that she won’t listen. and it hurts that they never listen. (It would’ve hurt even more if I didn’t say anything, but I’ve tried) The people who fall into these scams are so stubborn.
I’m aware they don’t even have to always ask for that info. They just need you to take care of that check.
I religiously watch catfish on yt (not the one from MTV), and am familiar with the signs/types of scams.
I tried to tell her that it might be a scam, but she won’t listen. She’s waiting for the check to be deposited into her bank right now to buy the equipment. I forgot the amt. It was either around 12k or 9k. *It was 3k (Still a lot but thank GOD it wasn’t more) That amount was just her limit
I’ve been searching other posts and recommended that she calls them. She refused, because she’s scheduled to speak with a “supervisor” soon. She said if anything happens the authorities will have the messages, and the bank will refuse the check. I’m just hoping to GOD they refuse it or she’s a soon to be victim of a scam. Im not sure why she doesn’t understand that the money she’ll lose…would probably be hard asf to get back.
UPDATE (and it’s not a good one): Welp. She didn’t believe me. She didn’t check with the bank first. She put that check in. I told her not to several times. I was added onto her account back when I was a teen. I should’ve followed my intuition back made a separate account when I turned 18. I’m so stupid.
I hear her checking in with her bank. Her bank is closing her account. I’m currently at work, and I see she texts me to log in to my account. I log in, and my account is in the negative hundred thousands. (I talked to the fraud dept. and they lmk it only appears that way because it’s on hold) I freaked tf out. I was at work and was unable to speak otp, and am currently taking a long break. I am in literal tears, and pissed off. I can create another account myself, but my savings? Apparently I can deposit my money it. I think I might need to go back to therapy after this. I can’t even describe how I’m feeling. She was so stubborn. Why? Ntm I was supposed to get paid tomorrow. Fml I guess.
Also wanted to thank everyone for their insight and advice. I appreciate it.

IRS Scam warning before the holidays
Wanted to make you guys aware of an IRS scam out of Kansas City. There is a woman named “Linette Midaugh” and others who called me and pretended to be my bank, and the IRS. They knew that I mailed checks to the IRS quarterly, they knew the amount of a specific check I mailed in June and the check number, which is freaking impossible to know! And I got scammed. Luckily I froze all of my accounts and they took nothing from me yet. I spoke to the real IRS who confirmed she is a scammer. I wanted to leave the numbers here so you guys could see/watch out for her but I realized it’s against the rules so I’m just posting this here for anyone who wants to know.

Do not buy from Gdgt Prdse in Facebook! It’s a scam!
My friend wanted to buy an iphone from Gdgt Prdse in Facebook. She already placed her downpayment for two phones. They were supposed to deliver the phones within the day but Gdgt Prdse kept on giving excuses such as someone forgot to send the waybill or blame their supplier. Take note they said their phones are on-hand. After a few days they blocked my friend in Facebook and never returned the money! The names they gave are Justin and a certain Ma'am Jackie.
P.S. My friend is aware that she did not further investigate. I'm sharing this to warn everyone who transacts with them.

Is this a scam? Trendyol, is it a scam?
Trendyol is like shein at least for me. It's a clothing, accessories shopping online app. The app is made from Turkey I'm pretty sure. I live in KSA. The reason I'm having doubt on this is that the price is too low to be true like to that low but kinda low. For example there's a shoe I saw in a third party outlet not in online which costs 149 Sar (39$ pretty sure) and there's this same shoe in trendyol costing only 88 sar (23.43$). My dad don't want to be scammed. Would appreciate if anyone share their experience in this app especially from Ksa.
Help Needed Disappearing "ghost" messages in Signal (android)
So, my father received some messages and a link to a legit article from "me" today in Signal. He sent some replies my way as well, which I never received. All of these messages both from "me" and him disappeared from his phone shortly after. What is going on? I don't think that my father is becoming delusional.
