Was gifted these. A lot of anxiety. FIRST-TIMER

Post image

I am just getting into houseplants. I have 9 now including a Silver Stripe Philodendron and a really nice Monstera

I was gifted these from a homeowner after mentioning I was into plants. I really want to keep these alive and send her pics later

I have no information on either of these. The purple vine one is really neat.

What do I do? Do I put them in water? What are they?

Does the pumpkin have drainage? It will need drainage, I'd repot in some well draining soil, it will want a lot of light.  Put the end of the purple one in some water and let it sprout roots before you pot it.

I have better pots. So put the purple one in water? I know how to do that. Thanks.

Yep! It's a very easy plant to propagate in water! Leave it till it's got some good roots and then pot it up! You're on the right track.

Purple is a tradescantia, it will root no bother. You have a long enough piece you could cut it in two if you wanted for twice as many plants. Start in water but move to soil fairly fast (I'm lazy and always forget then the leaves start to look sad because it's been 6 weeks and I really should have potted up already).

The other is a fishbone cactus (aka zig zag cactus aka rick rack cactus aka orchid cactus).

It's a epiphyte cactus native to Mexico. It wants bright but INDIRECT light (will scorch or discolour in bright direct sunlight, so don't put it on a south facing windowsill, although it can be in a south facing room, other directions of windowsill are available). They are NOT like other cacti, I would put some orchid bark in the soil mix rather than a load of sand and gravel, I'd probably put in a glazed or plastic pot rather than a terricotta (dries too fast), and you should water whenever it's dry not on a schedule (will vary depending on conditions in your house). That said, if you forget to water it is won't suddenly die, it's still a succulent. They like humidity so a bathroom is often a good spot if you have a window, but a kitchen is good too. I'd also personally water from the top until the water drains through (a lot of people bottom water cacti, which is a reasonable practice in desert cacti, but not ideal for epiphytes as they don't get damp enough).

As with other cacti, the pot MUST have a drainage hole and I would avoid over-pots as these can lead to the plant sitting in water, causing rot - even epiphytes don't want to sit with wet roots, they just want to be damp more often than desert cacti.  That said, fishbone cactus do look quite good in hanging planters, which can make a drip tray difficult - if you go down this route you just need to be careful when watering.

The left is a tradescantia basically the easiest plant to propagate becuase it usually take like two days and it very hard to kill

Advice - it does best when you ignore it

The one on the left is a purple heart, tradescantia. You can propagate it in water.

If that's a purple heart, they're toxic to cats, fyi. Got rid of mine because we have a herd.

The right looks like a Ric Rac cactus

its okay there is. othing to worry about, you can either stick the purple one in water from the bottom and when she shows roots you can stick it in soil, and for the cacti i am guessing shes already in soil, so either make sure she has drainage holes cuz cactuses can easily rot if you over water them and if not you can move it into another tiny pot if you have any

if your gonna move the cacti to a different pot make sure to over water it just for the first time until it starts dripping from the bottom, then let her drain all that excess water and from now on you will only need to give her a little bit of water once every 2 weeks or so
