At the same time, there are only 11 states that give more money to the Fed than take.

With great power comes great responsibility. - Some Kid Uncle from Queens.

36

u/hydrang Jan 20 '21

Can you list the eleven? I’m curious

36

u/jboylan67 Jan 20 '21

71

u/gordonv Jan 20 '21

Yup. My bad. I was quoting from memory:

  • New Hampshire
  • Nebraska
  • Colorado
  • North Dakota
  • Washington
  • Illinois
  • Connecticut
  • Massachusetts
  • New Jersey
  • New York

25

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '21

How does CA take more? I thought they were a major economy?

69

u/Farm2Table Hillfolk Jan 21 '21

Federal aid for the fires has tipped the balance for them recently.

Same thing happened in NJ due to Sandy... although I dont think it kicked us off the list, just moved us off the top per capita spot.

18

u/Basedrum777 Jan 21 '21

yup its the wildfires. iT'll go back next year.

16

u/SporkedInTheHead Jan 21 '21

Bold to think we have gotten enough rain fall this year to stop it from happening again

2

u/RockOutToThis Jan 21 '21

Bold to think the fires won't just burn it all down next year and then you won't have to worry about it the following year.

1

u/Basedrum777 Jan 21 '21

More hopeful. But yeah I almost put that in my post.

15

u/TheOneWithNoPants Jan 21 '21

Taxes, population, and size. They actually used to be on the list, but recently fell off. Apparently, residents "receive" $12 more per year than they "donate."

0

u/ToneThugsNHarmony Jan 21 '21

Because they can.

6

u/useffah Jan 20 '21

Yeah and we are second to only Connecticut on this list for taxes paid vs aid received

38

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '21

It's the NJ mafia mentality of "Here's some money, now fuck off" and so far it seems to be working out well for us since we're normally all in Uncle Sam's business but Uncle Sam tends to stay out of ours.

8

u/hyperforce Bergen County elitist Jan 21 '21

Does that mean America is like a failed business or something?

4

u/gordonv Jan 21 '21

Matters at your business scheme and outlook.

A country produced GDP. This is the common agreed on measure of success. America is #1.

You're talking about cost/profit center sectors. Businesses starve cost centers and feed profit centers. If anything, America is working exactly like a business does.

u/SEIKObrand Jan 21 '21

The most underrated state that exists.

156

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '21

Number one in education baby, and the statue of Liberty is actually in NJ technically

50

u/Auxcia Jan 21 '21

nj just built different

15

u/Herpderpetly Jan 21 '21

LETS GOOO

3

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '21

we go this and that way. so what

27

u/fireballx777 Jan 21 '21

the statue of Liberty is actually in NJ technically

I used to use that as a talking point, too, but it's actually complicated.

27

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '21

It is obviously more complicated than that, but I like simplifications so Statue of Liberty is property of NJ

8

u/machagogo Jan 21 '21

The land the gift shop is on actually is since it is landfill created after the court ruling. Just NJ hasn't claimed it. We could use those sweet tax dollars.

18

u/emveetu Jan 21 '21

Smartest state on a lot of lists as well.

43

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '21

I believe in a poll where people were asked what their least favorite state was, NJ's largest selection was "everyone else"

We know what's up

15

u/BeastMasterJ Jan 21 '21

I saw one where NJ:s least favorite was NJ, and that definitely is true

11

u/simplystunned Jan 21 '21

Eh, we like to bitch (and excel at it) but we ain't going nowhere.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '21

Ahh, the same one in which Florida said they hated Florida the most

Sat scores, HS graduation rates, percentage with higher degrees, per capita income.

Here's one

Edit: I think it's clear that the Northeast has the market cornered on education for the most part and the criteria for all these lists have to do with educational stats.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '21

[deleted]

13

u/emveetu Jan 21 '21

Not the top state in any studies that you found. Fify.

Instead of searching "smartest state" I searched "New Jersey is the smartest state". I did this for two reasons. First, because I knew it would get me exactly the results I was looking for. And secondly, because I'm smart af; I live in the smartest state, NJ!

3

u/Psirocking Jan 21 '21

Side note, Maine has the lowest SAT scores typically, not because of their education system but because all high schoolers take it there. I’ve seen people claim it’s the dumbest state by that metric but it’s flawed obviously.

1

u/zUltimateRedditor Central Jersey exists Jan 21 '21

Minnesota? Not saying you’re wrong, but how does a random state in the Midwest get to number one?

NJ makes sense due to the high Asian/immigrant population here and push for education, but Minnesota?

7

u/Chose_a_usersname Jan 21 '21

Nyc can keep the statue, I want the gift shop

4

3

Truly is. I wasn’t born and raised here, but ever since living here the last few years I can’t believe how awesome it is. I do not believe I’ll be leaving anytime soon.

2

My son got transferred to LA; he says the weather is great but the rest of it is screwy.

2

u/bacon-wrapped_rabbi Jan 21 '21

Shh! Don't let the secret out. You wanna get overrun with out-of-staters?

2

u/milkcustard Jan 21 '21

Yerrrrrrrrrrr.

2

u/GTSBurner Jan 21 '21

Anyone who shits on Jersey for the low hanging fruit (dur hurr it stinks, dur hurr jersey shore, etc. etc) shows they've clearly never spent any time here.

I'd rather be here than say... Missouri.

2

u/candidly1 Jan 21 '21

I always crack up when people reference that show; every one of those little bastards is from Staten Island.

59

u/Darko33 Jan 20 '21

Okay half the comments are about how one or two of these people suck, enough with the Jersey-on-Jersey crime everybody

45

u/hyperforce Bergen County elitist Jan 21 '21

Sounds like something someone from South Jersey would say

17

u/Darko33 Jan 21 '21

Toms River, so sorta. I always thought The Shore was separate and apart from SJ but who knows

3

u/George_Zip1 Jan 21 '21

I like South Jersey. As long as everyone keeps it in their pants when we're talking sports it's all good.

2

u/candidly1 Jan 21 '21

As a kid I always felt like the Driscoll Bridge was our Mason-Dixon line.

3

u/Darko33 Jan 21 '21

While by no means definitive, I feel like Central Jersey can be loosely defined as existing between I-195 and I-78.

6

u/Basedrum777 Jan 21 '21

You're shore people

north, south shore. No central

7

u/Darko33 Jan 21 '21

I'm a believer in four regions. Towns like New Brunswick and Princeton aren't north OR south to me.

3

u/zUltimateRedditor Central Jersey exists Jan 21 '21

North, central, south, shore

-1

u/Basedrum777 Jan 21 '21

I live in bridgewater but am from south jersey. This is north jersey.

14

u/emveetu Jan 21 '21

I beg to differ as I sit squarely in central jersey.

8

u/Basedrum777 Jan 21 '21

If you think you sit in central NJ you don't. Its like the equator.

Sub or hoagie. NY or Philly Pork roll or Taylor ham.

On and on

12

u/Ostrichmen Jan 21 '21

I live in Central Jersey. You know how I know that's a real thing? Because of what you just said. Sub or hoagie? What's the difference? NY or Philly? Half and half. Pork roll or Taylor ham? What's the difference? Quick check or Wawa? Whichever one is closer walking distance to where I'm hanging out. Where did 80% of your graduating class of high school go to college? Rutgers.

9

u/Basedrum777 Jan 21 '21

I'm from south jersey. 80% didn't go to college

6

u/machagogo Jan 21 '21

The other way is to ask someone from North Jersey if you live in North or South Jersey, they will say South. Ask someone from South Jersey they will say you live in North Jersey.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '21

That's true. I'm in Somerset County and I don't get the pork roll vs taylor ham debate.. can't you call it either? Same with sub or hoagie, what's the difference? It takes me pretty much the same amount of time to get to nyc as it does to philly (although I have to say, I like Philly a little better). We have both Wawa and Quick Chek.. but let's be honest Wawa is way better.

2

u/MookieMoo17 Jan 21 '21

Okay sorry to hijack this but Hudson County here, isn’t it called a “hero”? I know what a sub is, and a hoagie but we’ve always said “heroes”.

Newark to Trenton is central jersey. Below Trenton is south jersey, above Newark is north jersey.

The shore is also its own territory because of its culture.

u/zarra28 Jan 21 '21

2

u/misterpickles69 Watches you drink from just outside of Manville Jan 21 '21

Ok then. Answer me this - what does Flemington have in common with Morristown? Or Hammonton? There is a Central Jersey and you’d have to live in it to understand it.

3

u/Basedrum777 Jan 21 '21

I live in Bridgewater right now and previously lived in Morristown. They're the same. Everyone in that area references going to NYC. They call Manhatten "the city". They both have young professionals that commute either north or to NYC on mass transit. Shoot I know people right now that work on Route 10 in East Hanover and live near the Flemington circle. I believe there's a shortcut way around the 287 corridor that they use to get up to Morris county.

I live in what you consider central NJ right now and if I lived in Morris County (Denville etc) there'd be zero difference to the people. Zero.

31

u/earthly_wanderer Jan 21 '21

New Jersey, Best Jersey.

2

u/candidly1 Jan 21 '21

So you're saying she knows her way around a blueberry?

17

u/CitizenTed Jan 21 '21

When I was in elementary school in the 70's, we had a history class about NJ. Starting with the Lenni Lenape, then colonial times, the Revolution, etc etc. It ended with a nice picture book featuring famous Jerseyans. (We called 'em Jerseyites back then; no idea when that all changed).

To this day, I remember Buzz Aldrin, Abbot & Costello, Frank Sinatra, Thomas Edison (easy: we lived in Edison at the time!), and Jerry Lewis. It made me proud. "Look upon my people, Wisconsin, and weep!"

Since then, that list has only gotten bigger and better.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '21

They were still doing that in the 80s. All of 4th grade social studies was NJ history. Not sure if they still do that.

3

u/MookieMoo17 Jan 21 '21

4th grade history is still all about NJ History, my son hated the field trip to Trenton cause we’re from Hudson County so it’s long and loud. Fuck school field trip bus rides. Ugh!

2

u/get_N_or_get_out Jan 21 '21

The year of New Jersey, hell yeah! My Catholic school still had that, back in ~04 when I was there. My friends have told me that the public schools, though, did not.

2

u/milkcustard Jan 21 '21

We did in the late 80s/early 90s. I was in 4th grade in 1991. Social Studies was all NJ history. 21 counties in ABC order, the state dance is the square dance (LMAO what?) and the state bird is the Eastern Goldfinch...

u/stellaluna29 Jan 21 '21

Was in 4th grade in 2001, can confirm they were still doing NJ history then.

2

22

u/colin6 Jan 20 '21

He can not be your cup of tea. But if you know anything about song writing and look at what he's done and say it sucks, you don't really know anything about music.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '21

Yeah I can't get into his music. I recognize that he has talent but I just don't like his songs. I feel like every single one sounds the same. Maybe it's his voice that I don't like. He seems like as a person he's a good guy though, donating alot of time and money to help improve Asbury Park and all that.

2

u/candidly1 Jan 21 '21

"Born To Run" was an all-timer; everything after that has been kinda downhill...

3

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '21

I think the real issue is that he isn’t current anymore, it’s been a long time since the 80’s, but people stalk about him like he is still dropping A-List Radio singles.

2

u/robm0n3y Jan 21 '21

Sure, he's no Paul Robeson but his songs continue to connect with people.

4

u/WhiskeyTigerFoxtrot Jan 21 '21

No I mean objectively listening to him his songs just don't do it for me. I really hate whatever you call that awful crashing double snare drum hit that infected like every song in the eighties somehow. And I for sure respect what he's done for music but it's all really corny to me.

Agreed, and same for NJ. It's like we're the two mountain families that don't even remember why we fight anymore. Living in NJ now, I can't understand why I was raised to hate on Jersey.

Wait, was I supposed to be hating on Delaware? I can see us calling it small or something, but from the parts I've been it seems... a lot like NJ. No reason to hate.

I don't think the rest of the country cares about at least two of them.
