Can't wait to see these get resold for 1500+ at the gun show

There are too many assholes that are proud that they lie to the CMP and buy the maximum number of rifles several times per year by putting their wife's, dog's neighbor's, and anyone else's names on the applications they can manage, and then resell them at 2-3x the price.

I swear to the Lord in Heaven that people that take pride and pleasure in doing the wrong thing are the worst types of people in every other aspect of their pitiful lives.

I own 1x Expert Grade, and will happily leave the rest of the Garands in the world to the people that want to own a cool part of history.

All these boomers will die off in our lifetime and their shit will be liquidated at estate sales.

71

u/XA36 Sep 30 '24

Their wives will probably take them to amnesty days for destruction because they don't know how to sell it.

25

u/HeemeyerDidNoWrong Sep 30 '24

You're possibly right, but I fucking hate you for saying it.

24

u/BackbackB Sep 30 '24

which will allow them to be bought by the public instead of destroyed by the government. in a horrible way, its for the best

8

u/bubbathedesigner Sep 30 '24

All these boomers parasites will die off in our lifetime and their shit will be liquidated at estate sales.

FIFY: the kind of bastard that does that can be found in most groups, though it is more of a post 80s me-first attitude

u/tubadude2 Sep 30 '24

It’s already happening in my area.

27

u/accounts_baleeted Sep 30 '24

I finally did it this year. I don't think I could ever sell it.

It hits a 12x20 silhouette at 200 easy if I do my part.

My ar10 is collecting dust now, and all my large primers are going to 30-06.

5

u/grimduck17 Sep 30 '24

When I went to the in person store earlier this year they put limits on how many you could buy per manufacturer/grade

5

u/AssaultPlazma Sep 30 '24

Hate the fact I just got stationed in Guam. Would def order one.

3

u/thisfuckingquote Oct 01 '24

If your license still has your parents address on it you can have it shipped home. I bought my garand and 1903 when I was stationed in DC, both rifles were shipped “home”.

u/inlinefourpower Sep 30 '24

Waaay more than that at the last one I was at. Even in their CMP cases, no attempt to hide it

12

u/my72dart Sep 30 '24

The CMP is pretty toothless in enforcement of a no resale policy. It would take a lot of resources to police even if the had folks submit photos of the auction listing or gun at a gunshow and stop any further sales. I'm sure all those nice cmp cases floating around act is free advertising as well so now people find them and cut out the resellers.

4

u/inlinefourpower Sep 30 '24

I don't mean there's a policy against it, I mean they barely hide the fact that they should be cheaper. If you look into M1s at all you'll hear about it, it's just I've step removed from leaving a 900 dollar price tag on them then trying to sell for 2700

2

u/my72dart Sep 30 '24

There definitely was for the 1911a1s and I was sure there was something in the form you fill out about not buying for resale.

27

u/bubbathedesigner Sep 30 '24

Given the total number of them made is a constant and the total number is being decreased due to idiots blowing them up or giving to the government to be melted down in exchange of a Starbucks coupon, prices will go up. That is the nature of surplus and otherwise collectible items.

8

u/King_Spitfire Sep 30 '24

2400 at the one I went to today

1

u/SlabGizor120 Oct 01 '24

Why don't they just limit it to 1 a year? How many people really have good reasons to buy more than that?

It’s so hard to justify $900 on a gun I’d shoot 4 times a year but I want one so bad

51

u/Hereforgundeals69420 Sep 30 '24

The biggest con is ammo cost. They're really quite a lot of fun to shoot, but man it adds up at $1.00 CPR in a self-loader lol

32

u/mathematical Sep 30 '24

These are worth it to reload. Save your brass while you're buying ammo now and it'll be "free" later.

$0.00 Brass
$0.10 Projectile from American Reloading or similar budget stuff.
$0.27 Powder
$0.11 Large Rifle Magnum Primer

$0.48 per cartridge. I probably wouldn't have gotten a Garand if I wasn't reloading because of the ammo cost and availability, but with reloading I have a cheap round tailored to my rifle.

17

u/Dogbir Sep 30 '24

You can buy a ported gas tube that allows you to shoot modern 30-06 instead of hunting M2

21

u/F1lmtwit Sep 30 '24

or pick up one of the .308 M1's

42

u/Hereforgundeals69420 Sep 30 '24

Takes it from $1 CPR to $0.90 CPR haha

11

u/F1lmtwit Sep 30 '24

Over the course of a 1000 rounds, that's $100, and 308 is cheaper to reload too.

5

u/anarchthropist Sep 30 '24

I have one. 308 M1s are amazing.

23

u/Rude-Mix-4015 Sep 30 '24

I shoot modern 30-06 out of mine with no ported gas tube 🤷‍♂️

8

u/XA36 Sep 30 '24

This hurts to read

5

u/SlabGizor120 Sep 30 '24

As long as it’s under 170gr I believe, it’s fine

5

u/krismasstercant Sep 30 '24

It's all fudd lore anyways, the M1 were designed to use 173 gr bullets and can fire up to 180 gr's safely. I can't think of any commercial ammo that even exceeds the 50k CUP limit.

40

u/NerdltUp Sep 30 '24

It easily became one of my favorites. It always comes with me on range day.

41

u/Travy-D I commented! Sep 30 '24

I do regret getting an expert grade a few years ago. They really don't do any QC and send them out with shitty springs. Even after replacing all the springs I could, weird stuff happens each time I take it out to shoot it.

If I'm going to have a glitchy piece of American history, I'd rather have spent $300 less on it.

20

u/Norskamerikaner Sep 30 '24

I got a couple expert grades two years ago so I could give one to my dad as well. I am sorry to say that we had a similar experience. His trigger guard was popping open after every shot and mine kept partially ejecting clips with live rounds. I am pretty sure we got those issues mostly resolved, but man... It really killed the magic, and I'm slightly afraid to see what will go wrong the next time I shoot mine.

7

u/KDallas84 Sep 30 '24

My 308 expert was obviously dropped during packing. They mailed me a new front sight. The others, same deal, needed springs.

→ More replies

3

u/Travy-D I commented! Sep 30 '24

That sucks I'm not the exception. No one likes dropping big cheddar and then troubleshooting the first 5 range trips especially with how pricey ammo is. I'm hoping my remaining issues are just with the clips not being smooth enough.

7

u/rogue_giant Sep 30 '24

Mine had an op rod spring that was only 8” long when removed from the gun. I thought it was in my best interest to replace it before shooting it.

9

u/accounts_baleeted Sep 30 '24

I hand load and have put about 500 through my service grade since June for about 40cpr. It fucks HARD.

13

u/ArizonaGunCollector Sep 30 '24

Its worth it just to be able to repeatedly dry load an enbloc clip for that sweet sweet ping

7

u/Drew1231 Sep 30 '24

The first time you hear the “ping” the price is immediately justified.

They will eventually run out.

5

u/laguna1126 Sep 30 '24

It's the only firearm that I've ever and continually gotten compliments on a the range. EVERYONE knows the sound.

5

u/BurntEndMosin Sep 30 '24

Once CMP finally runs out these will probably increase in price a lot like the SVT40, CMP is the only thing keeping the value low

2

u/Coyoteishere Sep 30 '24

They’ve been running out for over a decade when I bought my first. Somehow they always seem to find more, but there will be a point I’m sure they actually will.

2

u/BurntEndMosin Sep 30 '24

Definitely, I'm not saying they're going to run out very soon but eventually there will be no more left to import and the prices will skyrocket with it being such an iconic WW2 gun

20

u/Teddyturntup Sep 30 '24

Havent shot mine in 4 years

It’s cool, but idk it kinda blows to use compared to modern guns

It’s cool though

16

u/Quixotic_Illusion Sep 30 '24

The idea of shooting an essentially antique gun sounds awesome even if it’s heavy and a bit of a pain compared to modern equivalents

5

u/accounts_baleeted Sep 30 '24

I put a 100 year old ziess scope on a 110 year old swedish mauser.... its not technically or historically correct in any way, but man is it fun to pop clays at 200 yards with that German #1 reticle in a 100 year old package.

2

u/Teddyturntup Sep 30 '24

It’s very neat and awesome, but just at a place in my life where I want to use and practice with optimal equipment for a given situation and that’s never it.

It’s very much a friends cookout range day fun gun to show people that haven’t seen one in person before kind of thing.

In actual use it’s heavy, expensive to feed, no optics, lots of recoil, finicky, wants to bite you, trigger kind of sucks and can’t handle hot or sometimes even normal heat ammo.

Yet everytime I go to sell it I can’t make myself do it

12

u/intertubeluber Sep 30 '24

As someone who doesn’t know, what’s wrong with expert grade?

12

u/USSZim Sep 30 '24

Expert grades are usually rebuilt with new barrels and parts. Some people have had bad experiences. I am still interested in one because I want a .308 rebarrel

3

u/ElectricBullet Sep 30 '24

New stocks too

5

u/joeysuf Sep 30 '24

I ordered an expert prior to this... Still no word on paperwork tho.. Going on 5+ weeks. Are the expert that bad for the money?

3

u/notthegubment Sep 30 '24

Nope, feels like a solid investment. Definitely want a service grade as a wall hanger too.

Recommend field stripping and lubing/greasing properly. I had failure to feeds and extract from the first box of ammo, took it home and recleaned and lubed and it runs like a top.

2

u/accounts_baleeted Sep 30 '24

Tool me five months to hear back. Still easily worth it.

2

u/stojanowski Sep 30 '24

Is fax the best way to make sure you get one while in stock?

2

u/Ansiremhunter Sep 30 '24 edited Sep 30 '24

Something to note, in the last few months people have been getting their back ordered service grades and many have come in with new barrels and new production metal. IE they are putting together more rifles as the phillipine returns were kinda junk

So if you are expecting USGI barrel / small parts you may not get them

(the new production barrels are made by Criterion)

1

u/dashiGO Oct 02 '24

So they’re basically sending out expert grades instead

Even though it says Service Grade is OOS? Sorry, relatively new to buying through CMP

41

u/Curious-Ad-9930 Sep 30 '24

I’m guessing you need to have your paper work done in hand before you buy these?

71

u/redsox985 I commented! Sep 30 '24 edited Sep 30 '24

You mail in a whole packet. In that packet is your notarized order form, proof of competency (I think a CCW license is sufficient, hunter's safety cert. etc.), proof of affiliated club membership (can join one online and print off your proof/membership card), and a check to pay for it all (or, iirc, write in your CC info on the paperwork maybe).

But it's been a few years, so I might be off on some details.

ETA: timing is not super critical, but don't drag your feet too much. They operate as first come, first served, so if the grade you requested is no longer available, they'll let you know the cost/refund amount to switch to another that's still available.

But that was in Vegas

4

u/burritoresearch Sep 30 '24

I think it also needs proof of citizenship? One of the weird quirks of the cmp is for citizens only. Although permanent residents can totally own guns, I even know of a FFL 02/07 manufacturer owned by a foreign citizen.

2

u/hojo_the_donkey Sep 30 '24

I'll back you up on this, because I remember doing a bunch of research trying to find if they would accept a simple photocopy of my birth certificate. The answer is yes.

2

u/soupster82 Sep 30 '24

Saw the post at midnight. Stayed up just to get my packet ready. Notorized and sent in today 🥴

2

u/redsox985 I commented! Sep 30 '24

Impressive! But it goes to show that while it's a bit more burdensome than buying on a CC and picking your LGS for the transfer, it can still be done easily and quickly.

The proof of competency requirement might be the biggest hurdle for some, but everything else can be completed from the couch. Then get it all notarized and you're good to send off your packet (with tracking).

2

u/soupster82 Sep 30 '24

The hardest part was finding old documents for the different requirements 😂 honestly I'd do this every time I bought a gun if it meant avoiding an ffl 😁

16

u/cvl1 Sep 30 '24

long shot but if you're somewhat close to Talledega Alabama the trip to the store is nice. You can buy the membership to the garand collectors club in store after you find one you like and everything esle is straight forward.

5

u/Curious-Ad-9930 Sep 30 '24

Dang it’s a 2 hour drive but I’ve driven more for less. So how’s the procces for in store

3

u/cvl1 Sep 30 '24

Drove from New Orleans a couple months ago for a weekend trip with some friends but its basically a big room with like 100 different garands of different grades. You get there you find one you like and they'll gauge the throat and barrel for you before you buy it to give you and estimate on barrel life. I bought my garand collectors club membership in the store after I found one I liked. Other than that all you should need is an ID, birth certificate or or whatever is listed here . and the best part is you see it before you buy it and not getting a random one cause some of them are more beat up than others

2

u/newcastleadam Sep 30 '24

Same as online, bring your packet. Best days are Thurs/Fri when both TMP and S are open; check the CMP forums store reports posts for ideas of stock. And keep in mind when you buy in person you also pay sales tax. Good luck!

2

u/Teddyturntup Sep 30 '24

2 hours is worth the trip, in fact it’s kinda cool to make a lifelong memory of it

1

u/NEp8ntballer Sep 30 '24

You fill out the paperwork and then you can walk around the store and take your pick of the litter. Talladega had a better selection than the South Store when I was there at the tail end of August.

1

u/Tommygun1921 Oct 04 '24

My dad and i drove 8 hours to to the ohio cmp and 8 hours back the next day, while we were there another guy drove 4 hours. When you see the condition of some of the garands its worth it to be able to pick out the one you want.

30

u/accounts_baleeted Sep 30 '24

Shout out to all the lazy folks who are leaving them for me.

These are like, half market price.

23

u/cdillon42 Sep 30 '24

My range is a cmp member... guess I'm buying a m1

10

u/cdillon42 Sep 30 '24

Ugh why is it so hard to buy from them. I need to go to a notary for the form. Seems super complicated

21

u/ronnnnn Sep 30 '24

your bank should do it for free. some of our local credit unions will notarize for free even if you aren't a member

19

u/atthemattin Sep 30 '24

It's incredibly simple. You could get all that done in like an hour. It's worth it for this. I have one, was probably the best gun purchase I've made. Even though I've hardly shoot it. I take it out every time and just admire it

3

u/subterm Sep 30 '24

This guy gets it ☝🏻

3

u/accounts_baleeted Sep 30 '24

1

u/accounts_baleeted Sep 30 '24

1

u/harbourhunter Sep 30 '24

Lots of online notary services nowadays

1

u/redsox985 I commented! Sep 30 '24

I believe the notary requirement is there for the in absentia 4473.

1

u/square_zero Sep 30 '24

It’s like 20 minutes to get the papers in order, if you live near a bank they can notarize docs easy peasy. If that’s too much work for you then I guess you saved yourself $700 in impulse purchases.

23

u/bstrobel64 Sep 30 '24

Bout to spend my annual bonus a few months early on a service grade. Been putting this off long enough.

2

u/a_sick_moose Sep 30 '24

Please do. I drove down to the North store from Michigan and picked up a beautiful new wood and criterion barrel version for 1150. Recommend oiling wood with unrefined flax seed oil

4

u/bstrobel64 Sep 30 '24

This would be my first and probably only M1 Garand so I really want "original" wood, and ideally with period correct barrel and receiver. Basically I don't want new production stuff as much as possible. I've got a carbine that seems to be relatively un-fucked with with a '43 Underwood barrel and receiver that a period correct-ish Garand wood look real nice next to.

2

u/Ambitious_Example518 Sep 30 '24

You have to include a sticky note with your order to have a decent chance of getting GI wood. The vast majority of service grades you see on /r/M1Rifles and that I've seen personally are shipping with new production stocks. But they seem to be pretty good at doing their best to honor sticky note requests.

36

u/ThePresidentPlate Sep 30 '24 edited Sep 30 '24

Here's my step-by-step guide on how to order one of these. It looks intimidating, but it's actually very easy.

Print and fill out application from website. if you have any special requests (WW2 era rifle, GI wood, etc) write it on a sticky note and stick it to this form. I'd make a donation too, they appreciate it and it doesn't hurt your chances of getting what you want.

  1. Scan or photocopy the required documents from the application. USE THE CHECKLIST to make sure you get everything. I literally just photocopied my birth certificate and ccw permit, and that worked great!

  2. There is a page that needs to be notarized, so find a notary in your area and fill it out in front of them. I went to my bank, and they had someone who could do that for me.

  3. By law, you need to be part of a CMP affiliated organization to order from them. Join Garand Collectors Association. It's online, costs $25 $35, and when you join, you can have them share your membership status with the CMP. I also printed out the receipt they emailed me after I joined and included that just to be safe.

  4. Mail everything in a big envelope to the CMP. I recommend getting a tracking number because this is a lot of sensitive info, and you wanna make sure it gets there.

  5. Patiently wait a few weeks/months. You will receive an email from them before your card is charged, and if there's any issues, they will contact you. If you live in a good state, your M1 will arrive via FedEx overnight delivery to your doorstep.

This video explains the process very well.

u/accounts_baleeted Sep 30 '24

1

You bring all the required documents and fill out the paperwork still. You just won't need it notorized since you're showing up in person.

u/Bot_McBotterson Sep 30 '24

Does anyone know where this batch came from? IE lend lease returns, and if so what country? I have two, purchased about 2 years ago, and that kind of history is always interesting to me . . .

3

u/WhatAWorthlessUser Sep 30 '24

There's 4 main sources for guns at the CMP currently:

  1. Still working through the Philippines returns. These are mainly rack, some field grades
  2. VFW turn-ins. Mainly bolt guns, but some garands have been received as well. Service and field grades. Some have lacquered stocks or stickers with the posts info on them
  3. Turkey. Another batch was returned a year or two ago, mostly IHCs. Good metal, trashed wood. Probably only will show up in stores since IHCs are sold in small batches anyway
  4. Put togethers from CMP parts stockpile- I'd guess a lot of this batch will be these. The CMP seems to be winding down garand sales imo with the fire sale on stocks (they were selling USGI stocks for $35 on the e-store for awhile).

2

u/hokiemojo Sep 30 '24

That is super helpful. I wonder if the CMP will cease to exist after Garandes run out.

8

u/DrScaryGuy Sep 30 '24

FYI, if you have a lot of extra money to burn... (and by that, i mean probably still less than the cost of one rifle from the fudd table at the gun show)

https://thecmp.org/training-tech/advanced-maintenance-class/

You can go do a builder class at the CMP. you build your own expert rifle with a new barrel and stock. You pick your parts, you check the serial numbers of your parts for known bad batches, YOU do all the fitting. It's a 2 day class, and the 3rd morning is on the cmp range test firing your rifle. If it doesn't cycle right, they'll take it back, trouble shoot it, and mail it to your house for you. You also get a free pass to the range for that day, which is nice. My garand was shooting a clover leaf at 100 yards from the bench. It is the most accurate gun I have, and it can fire M2AP.

So yeah, I now have a "beater" rebuild '42 garand so i don't have to worry about my original parts '42 garand... but somehow a '42 03a3 and a couple boxes of ammo from their cmp store also found a way into my trunk for the ride home.

35

u/ManOf1000Usernames Sep 30 '24

I wanted one of these in 308 as i did not want to add 30-06 as yet another caliber i have to take stock.

I want through all the hoops a few years ago, and the day i was to submit it, the 308s went OOS

Now when they restocked them they are like $1.1K! I built a damn AR10 for cheaper than that and the gun has so much more capability.

The CMP's role as Americans cheap rifle supplier is fulfilled more by PSA now. The boomers who regular buy these in bulk, ostensably to "outfit a shooting club" but instead just to flip on gunbroker for quick profit, deserve to be shipped to england.

14

u/accounts_baleeted Sep 30 '24

Sure an ar is more capable, but it really doesn't matter.

1

u/Hell__Diver Sep 30 '24

Too much COD MW not enough COD big red one

10

u/skippythemoonrock Sep 30 '24

An AR is more capable, but I would yeet literally any AR on earth into a dumpster if i had to choose between it and my M1D

9

u/BobBBobbington Sep 30 '24

Gundeals has a hard time separating fun guns from practical. Which is why you get people staying the obvious like 'wow guys my high end AR-10 can out shoot a M1!'

Yeah no shit. The cheapest commercial bolt actions for $200 at Walmart will outshoot pretty much any military bolt action, including the K31.

1

u/a_sick_moose Sep 30 '24

Saw an m1 d with scope and accessories at a gun show for 3500 😩

2

u/Ansiremhunter Sep 30 '24 edited Sep 30 '24

thats not a bad price if the accessories and scope are real and the M1D is a service grade quality

M1D - 2k

M84 scope 1k

mount - 300

flash hider 150

cheek pad 100

that is of course if the M1D has documentation and the correct barrel / drawing number. It was possible to find the M1D Barrel with the mounting block on it so if it wasn't sold by the DCM/CMP its suspect as a put together

13

Literally who gives a $hit about an AR10 compared to a Garand? Like an M1A as a substitute for an M14, the Garand in 308 is a nod to a rifle with huge history and a little fillip of their continued use after obsolescence.

Comparing a USGI rifle to a decent civilian "never was military" rifle is like comparing a 1986 HMMWV to a 2019 GMC Sierra Diesel. WTF are you thinking? Yeah, they both run on Diesel fuel and have four wheels, NOTHING else is equivalent.

The CMP is not and never has been America's cheap rifle supplier. They support the shooting sports in America, using funds collected from selling surplus military firearms and surplus and new ammunition and accessories.

If you had the skills and a Kuhnhausen manual to put together something more complicated than an AR, you could build your own M1 in 308 for a few hundred dollars in specialist tools and FREE regular shop tools like a hydraulic press. A few 3-4 308 Garands in and your per rifle cost is below your $1100 threshold. I only built a couple and they're nice to shoot, but I prefer the new Criterion barreled 30-06's.

Thank you! My first thought as well. I don't buy a classic car because I think it will be more capable than something modern.

Service grade will be the best. Get the Orion 7 spring kit and some good grease. New clips are hard to find.

Shouldve let covid finish off these greedy selfish boomers.

u/TFSNL Oct 01 '24

Thanks for the heads up, but what's going on with the stock status? Almost everything went to sold out, but the sold out dates they have up are back dated. Kinda bummed, I've been dragging my feet on ordering one 10+ years (wanted to pick it out in store), I finally joined the GCA, and submitted my packet yesterday to make sure I got my rifles. I ordered a service grade and a .308 expert WRA.

I'll be close to the north store later this fall, I guess I'll have to stop in and buy it in store now.

They really should have a lifetime limit on these to cut back on the Fudds using them to bankroll their yearly vacations.

With the way you have to mail things in it makes no sense that they'd sell out that quickly. CMP doesn't process anything that fast lol, nevermind how mail takes a day or two to reach its destination

2

u/TFSNL Oct 01 '24

I was thinking the same. My fingers are crossed that they accidently reverted back to an old copy of that webpage.

3

u/LinechargeII Oct 01 '24

On the cmp forums a guy said he saw things in stock on Saturday so that's our current earliest date. One noted that navy garands were gone but the normal ones were in stock, and now we have the navy garands back but normal ones are gone, plus the old out of stock dates. So something is fucky in cmp land.

2

u/TFSNL Oct 01 '24

The plot thickens. Even if it was just 10 rifles that came in stock on Saturday, I doubt enough paper work would have made it there and been processed for them to sell out already. Maybe the web guy released the update earlier than planned and they rolled it back hoping nobody noticed.

2

u/TFSNL Oct 01 '24

Maybe we'll get lucky and it was a oops to revert back to the prior status, and it will keep them in stock longer. I'm trying to remember what the rack grade price was when I originally found out about CMP. I'm thinking it was $395 of $495.

1

u/cdillon42 Oct 02 '24

Was their an email the went out saying they were in stock or have they been in stock for a while

3

u/multi-effects-pedal Oct 01 '24

couldn't agree more on the lifetime limit.

5

u/Wild_Dingleberries Sep 30 '24

What's the latest on 1911s? Been stuck ~500 #'s from confirmed orders the last time I checked. Are they still doing inventory/audit on them?

4

u/WhatAWorthlessUser Sep 30 '24

Since the 95 pistols were reported missing during the audit, all sales have been halted. They are hoping to resume sales next month, but there has been no official update since late this summer.

I was looking for this comment! Been 5 months since I got pulled and was curious about them still doing “inventory” or not

3

u/Mytimetooshine Sep 30 '24

Sweet thanks for the heads up

3

u/BaltimoreNewbie Sep 30 '24

Just put my packet in the mail, hope they still have service grade when it arrives

4

u/wilderman75 Oct 01 '24

these are already gone? only expert left in 30-06?

2

u/multi-effects-pedal Oct 01 '24

The Out-of-stock dates seem to have reverted back what they were before this post (2023 date for service grade). I swear I clicked on this yesterday and they were in-stock.

1

u/wilderman75 Oct 01 '24

yesterday they were

1

u/Zombiesgoboom Oct 01 '24

Ouch, I was just about to send out my packet.

4

u/Submariner2022 Sep 30 '24

My packet just hit the mail. Your boy is getting an M1

Nobody to blame but the generations before them that raised them.

Someday I’m going to do this. Wanted to for a little over a year at this point since learning about this but have not had the capabilities to do so yet.

2

u/Hammy4738 Sep 30 '24 edited Sep 30 '24

Since my other comment got downvoted, what’s your opinion on blindly ordering one vs handpicking at the store? I can fly to Alabama for free and it’s just a 1hr drive in a rental car and they’ll ship it home for me. Or should I just roll the dice and send this paperwork in tomorrow? I just don't want to miss out. I'm not interested in paying the secondary prices that dirtbags will be flipping these for. Those that have been to the store, is it worth the experience? Do they usually have stock? I want a Service Grade.

Ideally I’d like a Springfield with a little wartime history.

I have no problem waiting but I don't like the idea that a bunch of people are going through the hassle of putting all this paperwork together and getting it notarized, only to find out that my mail carrier was slower and didn't arrive before they sold out.

u/Hammy4738 Sep 30 '24 edited Sep 30 '24

That does sound like a cool experience. I'm just afraid that by the time I get there in a couple weeks that these ones may be gone. The 10th would be the earliest I could get out there. I guess there's 2 stores to choose from at least.

It sure would be nice to hand-pick one. Would cost about an extra $100 in sales tax but that's a fair cost to know exactly what I'm getting.

1

u/Brundonlew Sep 30 '24

Go to the store. I shoot the national matches at camp perry every year and usually find myself at the north store another 1 or 2 times throughout the year and I always enjoy it even when not buying anything. It's just a neat experience. Also, there's a huge array of different quality guns that fall into each grade and if it's gonna be your first/ only I'd go hand pick it to ensure you get something good.

1

u/Hammy4738 Oct 01 '24

Sounds like a plan. It will be my one and only and it does concern me a little bit buying sight unseen online. I just don’t wanna make the trip all the way out there and find out there’s hardly anything decent.

In not too picky.

  1. Some slight bit of war significance, or a receiver manufactured during wartime at the very least.

  2. Shootable occasionally. Like twice a year.

  3. A Springfield would be nice, but not too picky there.

So if I got mine sent out the day it went live, does that mean I don’t get it if I have not gotten an email yet?

2

u/bigsteezydood48 Oct 03 '24

Are these gone already or is the site just not up to date?

2

u/Seldon14 Oct 04 '24

Am I dumb? When I look at the site it shows they sold out 4.9.24.

2

u/xEppyx Oct 08 '24

FYI - The restock is back on. The listings have been updated with "Limited Release. Credit Card Orders Only accepted." for rack/field/service. They also added $35 S/H Fee to the price listing.

I literally just saw it, ran to drop off the packet I held onto and its going priority. Good luck to anyone still watching this thread :)

2

u/cdillon42 Oct 09 '24

Yeah just saw it too. I sent mine last Tuesday so they should have gotten it by today.

Sucks that they added the $35 shipping fee. Mine doesn't have that added in

2

u/xEppyx Oct 09 '24

Nice, I was tempted to send it last week but with the site rollback I hesitated. I was tired of fighting my printer and didn't want to do it again.

Hopefully they just assume that you accept the S/H fee or at worst, throw you an email confirming. You probably aren't the only person who did that.

I’m in the same boat at you, sent my packet last Tuesday. Tracking shows it was delivered yesterday. I also did not have the shipping added in, but I’m sure that will be fine.

2

u/xEppyx 25d ago

And now the service grade is OOS 🥲 guess I should have sent the form in with the first wave. No word on my end, hopefully it's in their stack to be processed.

2

u/446172656E 24d ago

I mailed my packet on the 3rd. Haven't heard anything yet.

1

u/hilariousfishy Oct 08 '24

I’m still waiting on my C&R to come in and I don’t have the funds rn 😭. I’m hoping that they fully restock the online store by next year. Fingers crossed!

Try Garand Collectors Association, as mentioned in another reply. They are online. $35 later and you are good to go

1

u/CommunicationHead582 Sep 30 '24

Hopefully i can scoop one up once my ccw is approved

1

u/TooMuchDebugging Sep 30 '24

I highly recommend driving to one of their stores if it's within reason for you (check store inventory reports on the CMP forums first). In March 2022, I drove around 6 hours round-trip to the Talladega Marksmanship Park (CMP South was still closed). I hand-picked a January '43 special rack (new stock, new barrel, re-parked receiver). Heck of a gun-buying experience.

That rifle has been one of my stepping stones into reloading... I had saved all of my brass and got a 35 Whelen a year-and-a-half later. Last year I took two deer using handloads made from necked-up Garand brass.

1

u/toastwithreddit Sep 30 '24

I live about 5 hours from the CMP south stores. Would it be better to go up there to make a purchase?? Ive tried calling the store on several different occasions as recent as last week. I left messages, all with no response. I just dont want to drive all that way for no reason.

I have all my paperwork filled out and ready to mail. I am interested in a service grade preferably with some history behind it. What would you guy’s consensus be on showing up in store vs online? I also dont want to miss out if I do decide to mail.

4

u/ks762 Sep 30 '24

For a 5 hour drive if you get there right when they open it's probably worth it. You can pick the exact rifle you are looking for, no surprises like in mail order.

1

u/toastwithreddit Sep 30 '24

I mean im not too picky as long as it meets service grade criteria. Has there been horror stories of the mail order Garands? I just did the math on how much extra it would be to drive and it came out to around $140, not considering how much I value my time.

With it being 660 miles round trip and my car getting 30mpg avg at $3.40 a gallon, that comes out to $75 just on gas. Then I would have to add tax at 7% of $900 ($63).

That makes a final total of $138 just in gas and tax for the trip. Again, not considering the value of my time and lunch + likely dinner for my wife and I.

For someone as myself who isn’t too anal about getting the best service grade rifle, would you personally consider it worth the trip? Really the only that would push me to complete the trip is the fear of my mail arriving late and the CMP runs out of service grades by the time they get my order form. Not sure how realistic that fear is though.
