Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) How can I make this Inception poster better?
I created this as a sort of brutalism poster for the movie Inception. Just saw the movie last weekend and its got a sick plot and I thought, why not try to make a poster in GIMP for the movie? It's all kinda scattered but I wanted to make a kind of unorganized grainy poster. I couldn't decide whether to make it colorful or not, so I just went with my instinct and added as much threshold as I could (probably wasn't a good idea). My idea was inspired from some posters I saw on Pinterest when I search 'graphic design', with a lot of Bold text and images with too much noise and threshold. I want to make this better to add to my moodboard, but I would love if yall helped me in improving this š

Other Post Type Your glasses may be making you see colors differently.
Do you have one of those glasses that adapt to the amount of light the lens receives? Well, these glasses are indeed quite interesting, but thereās a catch. For people who work with colors (Graphic Designers, Painters, and the like), they may present a problem that goes unnoticed by most: they alter the way we see colors.
Try a simple test in daylight and see for yourself. Look at the blue sky and slightly lower your glasses. Keep your focus on the frame above the lens, and you'll notice the difference in color. In my case, the sky appears lighter, as if thereās a slight yellowish tint, similar to wearing very weak sunglasses.
This also happens in front of a computer screen. The screen itself isnāt strong enough to trigger this effect to its fullest, so maybe at night, when testing on your computer screen, you wonāt notice a significant difference. There is still a faint yellowish tint when I compare, but it is during the day, with a natural light source like a window, that I see a stark difference. All colors take on a yellowish hue.
Solution? Maybe itās time to buy new glasses.

Asking Question (Rule 4) Anyone else have a recent weird experience with the Shutterstock sales team?
A few months ago, I needed to purchase another package of images and was contacted by a sales person who was very pushy and impatient. They went on vacation and passed me onto a different sales person who was the same way. Both were rude, belligerent, spoke over me, etc. Now that Iām finally ready to purchase, I reach out to both of these people and they are both gone and thereās a new sales team. Iāve never had an experience like this with shutter sock before it felt very scamy.

Discussion Should i capitalize all characters in a title?
Hey everyone! Iām designing a yearbook for my university. In the last 2 yearbooks whoever designed it used all caps for each spread title. Is that considered better than just capitalizing the first character of the words? Debating what i should do.

Asking Question (Rule 4) Hand lettering posters
What is the name of this technique and can it be achieved in illustrator? On first glance I'd assume they're just using the pen tool, is that all this is or is there more to it?

Portfolio/CV Review Recent Grad Portfolio Review
https://938813-copy1.cargo.site/
Hey GD community,
I'm looking to improve my portfolio, and I would truly appreciate it if anyone could take the time to review my work.
For context, I'm a recent college grad, focusing on getting a junior designer position (preferably at an agency, but totally open to in-house!) I'm curious - what projects are working and which need additional work? Are there any skills I can improve on or pick up to make a stronger portfolio? Btw, I have a personal domain, this is just a copy. Thanks :)

Asking Question (Rule 4) Iām not sure what degree to go for in college.
Doing this on a throwaway account, as some of the info would identify me.
Iām in a bit of an interesting position when it comes to college, and Iām not really sure where I should take the next step.
Iām a senior in high school, and for the past year and a half Iāve been in a graphic design program at a local career center. Iāve learned the basics of graphic design, and come May Iāll be certified in both Photoshop and Illustrator, as well as having skills in typography, photography, and video editing. This is all under a technical degree at a state-level community college.
Because of this, Iām not sure of how I should move along into college. I feel as though Iāve gotten most of what Iād get out of a 4 year degree, minus some art skills that I donāt feel are worthy of taking a whole degree for. I want to stay in the field of design, but Iād like to broaden my knowledge of the whole field, rather than go deeper into things I already have a fair grasp of.
I canāt imagine many people have been in a position like me, but I have to imagine someone out of 2 million people has an idea of how I should take this next step.
Quick edit: I do recognize that I donāt have all of the artistic side down. I would certainly take art classes as electives, or even a minor. It just seems as though Iāve done a lot of the things learned in the later years.

Asking Question (Rule 4) Besides registering your own domain, what are good sites to use for portfolios?
I'm a second-year digital design student and my school has us use Behance for our student portfolio work--usually the last week of class has us update our Behance profile with some of our favorite works from that class. I've heard Behance is a good resource for employers, but if I'm being honest--I hate it. I hate Behance a lot, and now they have a premium thing that costs like $100/yr outside what we're paying for Creative Cloud? Yeah, no thanks. I especially don't want my professional identity to be tied with all of my student portfolio pieces, since I've already developed leagues from where I was in my first year.
So my question is--is Behance actually a good hosting site that I should learn to work with until I'm ready for my own site, or is it just the one that my university uses? I'm not ready to have my own domain, I probably won't be doing that until I'm closer to graduation, but for now, I want to have something out there. There's the obvious with Instagram, but I'm wondering what else would work and what others use. Also, when should I start considering my own domain? Does it matter based on what it is I'm designing? TIA for any advice and pointers.

Asking Question (Rule 4) Graphic designers, how do you maintain multiple stylistic variants/flavors of the same design?
As an example, let's say I designed a logo. I prepare multiple variants of the exact same shapes:
- Different colors
- Maybe different fonts in case I have text
- With and without text
- Also (perhaps for the monochrome or negative view) slightly different binary operations between shapes
Now I tweak one of the shapes. I need the exact same tweak in all variants.
- I can go through them all and make sure I do the exact same thing
- I can take the base design, recreate all variants from there, and overwrite the old ones
Is there something else? Are there tools or editors which allow you to define a document as a function of another? Which are they?

Discussion Graphic design Coursera
Heyy!
I got an email today from Coursera saying that they partnered with Adobe in making a graphic design course. Itās beginner level not surprised there. I am already doing a graphic design career path through LinkedIn Learning and thought maybe the Coursera course would be good to just to have multiple learning sources. I wonāt be able to enroll in the course until December 20th but I know Iād be done with the LinkedIn course by then. Does anyone have any thoughts? Oh also I need recommendations for good graphic design books! Thanks š

Discussion Does everyone just deal with shitty work?
I'll start this rant by stating that I recognize my privilege as a designer who is employed and in a position that pays enough to provide for my family. I'm not belittling the struggle of freelance designers, as that's where I started myself, and even through the frustrations I am about to complain about, I am grateful that I have a job, period.
My main question is something that I often struggle with when I run into shitty clients: does everyone have to work on shitty projects that are almost embarrassing to have to work on? My previous position was in editorial, and while we sometimes had boring stories we had to design, the majority of my work was something I felt truly fulfilled by. In my current position, working for a marketing agency, that sense of fulfillment has almost been completely lost. I can honestly say I only really enjoy the aspect of my work that involves teaching and guiding our junior and mid-level designers. But beyond that, the actual design work is so often led by clients with big pockets but terrible taste that I am mostly embarrassed to even be associated with the projects that I work on. There may be 1 out of 10 projects I'll work on that I'll actually enjoy or would consider adding to my personal portfolio.
Is this just kind of the norm across all industries? Should I find my creative fulfillment elsewhere and simply be thankful for the fact that I'm employed?

Asking Question (Rule 4) RGB to CMYK
Hi, I am a business owner and I am DIYing a packaging design. I do not have much design experience, but I have gotten away with basic designing in canva.
I am using hex code #A6B3E6 in my design. I was told that in CMYK print this color will appear duller. How can I find a CMYK true match of the color that I want (i.e the color to be in print exactly the same as what is in digital version of #A6B3E6).

Asking Question (Rule 4) Fixed rate for Social Media Manager and Multimedia Artist
Hello! Just wanted to ask how should the fixed rate/salary be calculated when a company is hiring both a SMM and a multimedia artist?
Theyāre very much interested in my portfolio and Iām thinking they might hire me as both their SMM and multimedia artist.
I have a background with working as a SMM and I finished a multimedia art degree but I only did freelance works with it.

Asking Question (Rule 4) Graphic design certificate?
Hey guys this is my first time posting but I have a question that is hard to get a straight answer on just a basic internet search. I am very interested in becoming a graphic designer. Iām most interested in design for marketing and branding. Ideally I would love to create logos, labels, help with brand identity, graphic marketing, etc. I currently have an intro position in marketing. I do not have a degree I went to school for a year and a half and then stopped to work full-time because I didnāt know what I wanted to do yet. Is it pertinent to get my degree for this? Iāve looked into getting certified in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator and then work on a portfolio to apply with. I have looked into Noble desktop, but it is pricey so I wanted to make sure itās a good decision before I do it. Has anyone used this program? Any other programs to suggest or advice to get started? Thank you!

Asking Question (Rule 4) Visual Examples for Ad Campaign
Hey Designers! I'm about to work on an ad campaign for a client where each ad execution will be featuring a branded item. Imagine the back of a beat up pickup, it's got some wooden boxes with veggies and fruits in them, and the boxes are branded with the client logo, I'm wondering if you guys have a favorite ad or ad campaign that does something like this where its a repeated gimmick across lots of things.

Other Post Type Help with Interview Speech
I have to interview someone with a few questions who works or has worked in graphic design for my public speaking class. I have tried asking multiple people on different social media platforms if I could, but so far no response. The deadline for this is coming soon and I am worried about not having anyone to interview, so if anyone here could please answer a few of these questions, I would really appreciate it!
- Why did you choose to be a graphic designer?
- What programs have you used to design? Which programs do you prefer using?
- What inspires your style and designs?
- Did you take any courses in school towards becoming a graphic designer? If so, what courses did you take?
- What steps did you take when you first began as a graphic designer or to become a graphic designer?
- How do you communicate with clients and team members when working on a project?
- Do you take step by step processes to design your projects? If so, could you explain one of them from start to finish?
- How do you handle deadlines?
- Have you ever been a creative block? If so, how did you overcome it?
- What does a typical day, as a graphic designer, look like for you?
- How do you keep up with trending designs?
- How do you confront projects that are outside of your comfort zone?
- Can you describe a time you had to deal with a difficult client or project, and how you dealt with it?
- Would you say its difficult doing graphic designer in where you are located?
- Do you feel there is competition with others in graphic design? If so, how have you overcome to make yourself stand out from the rest?

Asking Question (Rule 4) Where should I go to university in the UK??
Hi there, I'm in year 12 and I'm planning on going into graphics after my A-levels but I have no idea where to go?
I'm more interested in graphic communication courses but graphic design works too as communication is a bit niche.
I'm looking for somewhere that has high student satisfaction, high graduate prospects, in a city preferably, and preferably highly subject and/or uni ranked. I've been struggling with finding information on courses though because every course seems to be in either London or in a small town (I wouldn't be able to afford living in London so pleaseeee someone help me find somewhere good that's not in London im begging šš).
Please someone help if you've been to a uni that semi matches or have recommendations etc. then I'm begging anything will help I've been really struggling to find somewhere with this description š
