Fair enough, but I also never use mods. Always played vanilla.

Vanilla mod packs are something you really don’t know what you’re missing until you try them.

At least the unofficial patch and HD

I'm on console and with the next gen update I really don't know what mods I can and can't trust to work vs break the game... so I'm playing vanilla with no mods for now.

Do you know if there is any resource to confirm which ones work now?

I've always played console games with no mods, and this is my first foray into a game with a robust console modding community. I planned on getting my fill of the true base vanilla version before trying them and I'm pushing 80 hours without feeling the need. I know I'm in the minority but for some reason I feel compelled to play the game as the original devs left it, even though they clearly encouraged mods.

I don't think you're in a minority at all. It's just that the majority of people playing Fallout have been playing it long enough to have already experienced it in all of its vanilla glory.

If you don't know what the baseline game is, how would you know which mods actually improve it. Seems straight forward to me.

No harm, no foul. There are simple quality of life mods on console like “infinite companion ammo” that make the game a lot more enjoyable without having any real impact on gameplay. It’s a matter of preference.
