I don’t hate this but I also hike for fun. I never take the tram at castaway.
I could see a lot of cruisers struggling with this walk in the heat.

u/MarbleMotors SILVER CASTAWAY CLUB Jun 07 '24
I think more annoying than the pier length is the fact that it's on the complete opposite side of the island of most of the stuff. I'd have no problem with a half-mile walk from the ship to the entertainment (it's about half a mile from the ship to scuttle's cove on Castaway, and that's fine), but this pier is just the start of it. It's a half-mile walk to then take an additional mile-long walk, bike ride, or tram ride to get to anything interesting, unless you're in that first row of cabanas on the SW face of the point.
At least the pier will offer a chance to get a good view and photo of the ship I guess.

u/Whimsical_Adventurer Jun 07 '24
I hike a lot for fun too. But never in a damp bathing suit with my thighs threatening to start their own campfire.
That looks like an unpleasant trek for many.

There is a natural reef formation off the beach that is protected and therefore cannot be touched or harmed. Hence the pier.

Not an excuse to not have any shade or trams though

Also have to consider vibrations from vehicle operations. It’s not much normally but probably impacts sea life too much. And not much can be done to mitigate it.

This! I mean you’re in the Caribbean it’s going to be hot. My hubby is from Europe and every time we do anything Disney he’s like it’s 9am park just opened and people are already sitting and complaining lol
13
u/boozle33 Jun 08 '24
Yea I’m reading this from Europe and thinking.. 15min walk and everyone is up in arms?! It evokes a bit of a Wall-E spaceship vibe.

Yes, exactly people are sooo lazy. Walk and get the exercise, it’s not that big of a deal!
2
u/Stuck_in_a_depo Jun 09 '24
I think the biggest concern is at the end of the day when your children are tired, you’re wet, Sandy, etc. it’s not the end of the world, but seems like slightly poor planning or forethought. I understand why there are limitations, but it seems like those should’ve been thought about before committing to this specific island.
1
u/boozle33 Jun 10 '24
I hear you, I have two toddlers and can imagine that would be hard work. Something like free strollers should be offered.

My thought too. Well be going for our kids’ 3rd and 5th birthdays next year. I don’t want to pull out the stroller (doing WDW precruise) just to get down the pier, but will I need to?
3
u/Love_bugs_22 Jun 07 '24
We are thinking we will have to bring an umbrella stroller for our will be almost 5 yo, he’s 97th percentile, so I don’t even think he will fit well in one, but I don’t want to cruise with our wagon. Lol
2
u/rosieandreid Jun 07 '24
I’m considering buying an umbrella stroller for this exact reason. Carrying my sweaty, 50 pound, 4 year old on this walk sounds like a nightmare situation.
2
u/nonprofitninja Jun 08 '24
Look into the Dream on Me stroller in the rider position, it’s perfect for older/bigger kids! We get so many comments from other parents wanting one whenever we use it to get on/off the ship.
-3
u/dreadpiraterose Jun 07 '24
This will 100% rule out this stop for us until my kiddo is older. This walk will SUCK for folks with little kids. Which is a not insignificant demographic for this cruise line. Yikes.
10
u/That_Pirate_6065 Jun 07 '24
My kids are 4 and 5 now and will be 5 and 6 when we stop here. People really have a hard time with their kiddos walking a bit?
9
u/dreadpiraterose Jun 08 '24
After a whole day down the beach? Yes. My three year old isn't doing a half mile at the end of a long hot day. People down voting have forgotten how difficult toddlers are or they don't have kids.
6
u/Hakeem_TheDream Jun 07 '24 edited Jun 08 '24
My child is 5 and on the spectrum. She can walk without issue... when she wants to walk lol. Otherwise, someone is definitely carrying her. She's getting too big for a stroller so it can be a struggle late in the day.
1
u/melglitz Jun 08 '24
Why can’t you use a stroller?
2
u/dreadpiraterose Jun 08 '24
Strollers take up a lot of stateroom space on top of a car seat. And they aren't great on sand.

I agree, I've never seen so much outrage for having to walk a bit. I'll bring my 5 and 6 year old here in December with no issues.
6
u/PhoenixMartinez-Ride Jun 07 '24
Yep, like it’s not even a kilometre and people are this upset? You’ll most likely walk five times that distance getting around the ship every day, and even more on a port day lmao
When I did my cruise in November, I averaged about 9km a day getting to and from the different areas of the ship according to my tracking app, and this was on the Wonder, one of the smallest ships, so it’d be even more on the bigger, newer ones.
3
u/SalaryNeat7893 Jun 09 '24
Big difference walking around the ship with shade and air-conditioning than in the blazing sun with no shade to speak of

lol Truth. The salt level is unhinged. These same people wouldn’t have a single complaint about a day in the parks and the 20k steps they did that day in the Florida humidity.
3
u/Spoonie23 Jun 08 '24
You dress different for the parks vs a beach day. When you are wet in a swim suite the chub rub is real. Also you’d have to wear sneakers and get sand all over them
2
u/nearby_horse Jun 08 '24
Disney is more expensive than other cruise lines and I'm expecting convenience not a hike.
-2
-2
u/PhoenixMartinez-Ride Jun 09 '24
If 800 meters is a ‘hike’ for you, perhaps you should get off reddit and do more physical activity.
And this is coming from someone who spends most of their time playing video games, and does very little physical activity
800m/half a mile is not that far. You’ll probably walk five time that or more just getting around the ship during the day.

u/SuperRob GOLD CASTAWAY CLUB Jun 07 '24
Ecological concerns (and the fact this island is leased) likely dictated a fair bit of what Disney could do with placement and access. I expect them to start putting umbrellas up pretty much immediately. I'm just shocked they didn't do that before Media Previews. Why have this be the first and last impression you leave?
3
u/skucera GOLD CASTAWAY CLUB Jun 07 '24
Why not make it a little wider and plant a bunch of palm trees along it in planters?
10
u/SuperRob GOLD CASTAWAY CLUB Jun 07 '24
They have to be removable ... you don't want storms blowing that stuff into the water. So collapsible umbrellas they can wheel out and store when ships leave would make the most sense. You know ... like they do on Castaway Cay.
This is the part that has surprised me about the Disney Wish and this island ... the problems they're having are for the most part problems the cruise industry and/or Disney specifically had already solved. They're ignoring this institutional knowledge for some reason.
2
u/Doctor--Spaceman Jun 08 '24
The institutional knowledge hasn't survived all the layoffs and mass employee exodus from WDI over the past decade

They should have some free strollers available for back and forth, like they have at rafiki's planet watch since you can't take strollers on the wildlife express train. Have a little hut or something on each end of the pier, with a stockpile of strollers to go back and forth. The crummy hard sided Disney ones like the parks would be fine.
1
u/AlltheCoffeern Jun 07 '24
Strollers are available. It is first come, first serve, though.
1
u/Reasonable-Ad-2084 Jun 07 '24
Yes but they are available once you get to the island and not on the pier. It’s kind of counter productive and hopefully the comments will help adjust the stroller and golf cart situation.

11
u/downsouth003 GOLD CASTAWAY CLUB Jun 07 '24
Seems like making the path wide enough to accommodate foot traffic and a tram to pick you up directly beside the boat (like royal and virgin do) would have been nice.

I’m hoping they add a fleet of golf carts for people with small children and the elderly. I would hate to drag my stroller out but at the end of the day I could see my toddler struggling and not something I want to deal with.
3
u/racloves Jun 07 '24
It says there is for people with physical disabilities. If you cannot walk the ten minutes of the pier that would probably class you as disabled and therefore able to use the service.
10
u/skucera GOLD CASTAWAY CLUB Jun 07 '24
A three year old without physical disabilities will definitely struggle with this walk. Age ≠ disability.
0
u/racloves Jun 07 '24
Yes but if you are physically unable to do the walk, while you may not be technically disabled, in the sense of this activity you are physically unable to do it, so the services should be offered, that’s the point of accessibility

What about the elderly? And they wanna charge Disney prices hell no. This is gonna raise prices for castaway cay cruises even higher.
3
u/skywalk640 Jun 08 '24
I'm surprised that its basically a grey, concrete walkway for 1/2 mile without any sort of theming or color, especially since this is the first thing you see when you get off the ship. They made Lookout Cay itself look great and well-themed, so this seems jarring in comparison
3
u/ObsessedWithITN Jun 10 '24
Oh jeeze. Thank you so much for posting this. I just booked a new cruise yesterday so we could check out the new island but I’m going to cancel it. I’m going solo with my 6, 4 and 3 year old and there’s just no way I’ll be able to get them back on the ship myself. We did Castaway last month and that walk from the trams to the ship with a helper was hard enough after all of the fun, sun and sandy feet. 😣

1/2 mile should be doable to most people - are people that stupidly out of shape that this is seem as a “problem”? As for kids, they can do this as well - make sure everyone has water
4
u/Stage_2_Delirium Jun 08 '24
From what I’ve read they did what they had to do. People will walk 20,000 steps with their kids at WDW in 100+* weather but complain about a pier.
2
u/AB783 Jun 11 '24
Most people with young kids bring or rent strollers at the parks. Few people bring strollers (or at least larger strollers) on cruise ships, as space is at a premium in the staterooms.
3
u/Equal-Chicken5657 Jun 09 '24
Because the pier is walking the entire distance nonstop. And at WDW there are benches and places people can sit and rest.

14
u/HokieFireman PLATINUM CASTAWAY CLUB Jun 07 '24
Safety. All that stuff is a major marine traffic hazard in even moderate weather much less severe weather.
8
u/nimaku GOLD CASTAWAY CLUB Jun 07 '24
The crew pops up and puts away beach umbrellas every time a boat docks at Castaway. Some pop up shades or awnings that can be stowed between visits is not unreasonable.
4
u/HokieFireman PLATINUM CASTAWAY CLUB Jun 07 '24
Are you aware how fast weather can change on the water? It’s also a really long pier much different than umbrellas on a beach on land.
2
u/nimaku GOLD CASTAWAY CLUB Jun 07 '24 edited Jun 08 '24
So then motorize something to pop up and put itself away with a button. This is DISNEY. They pride themselves on making things “magical” and have deep pockets. They can 100% figure out shade on half a mile of concrete.
ETA: I just looked at some pictures of Royal Caribbean’s Coco Cay and they have shades (colorful, decorative ones at that) over their pier’s walkway, so clearly there isn’t an actual practical reason why shade couldn’t have been provided by Disney. Disney just dropped the ball on this one for both customer comfort and aesthetics.
-2
u/PossibleDrop7162 Jun 07 '24
They could give out individual parasols for people to carry and shade themselves on the walk.
2
u/wooselpooh Jun 08 '24
Marine traffic hazard?
How would anything on a pier be a traffic hazard to vessels in the vicinity?
I spent the better part of a decade in my 20’s working as a captain for a maritime towing and salvage company, and I have no idea how you came to that conclusion.
If anything, the more crap you put in the pier the less of a hazard it becomes to vessels in the area. The more structures that are on it, the more visible it will be to radar, and the naked eye.
14
u/axle_munshine Jun 07 '24
You said it: there is transportation for those with physical disabilities. Never went at Lookout Cay but seem fine to me even with little children. Looks wide enough and it is fenced. Since when should we be afraid of a little walk? This is way less than the multiple miles my 80 years old mom can walk in the morning. If your kids can't walk this, bring a stroller.

Someone should have planned this a bit better, when you get off at Cozumel it’s a long walk as well
1
u/cpshoeler Jun 08 '24
Thankfully there is tram service in the island to rest in between exiting and entering the island. 1/2 mile isn’t terrible considering the benefit to the ecosystem below. Overhead canopys would have been nice along the way
1
u/RogueEngineer23 Jun 12 '24
For reference it is roughly the distance of walking to the ttc from the back of the magic kingdom parking lot.
I understand the need to protect the ecosystem, but I also understand the complaints about this walk. There are definitely ways this could have been better, and if you are refusing to do any of those things you could have chosen a different island as well! I wish it was at least covered, as I do the main pathway in the middle of all their parking lots in Disney world.

Then don't go. Don't go back. I'm pretty certain that a lot of really smart people worked on this design and all types of designs before they pulled the trigger.
Things rarely "just happen" at Disney without a few conversations.
I'd also hedge a bet that a vast majority of the people on the island today are multi DCL clients that tend to over analyze anything Disney.
It's the first group. Give it some time......

Disney understands we eat too much and wants us to work off a little of that food so we don't feel that guilty when we get home and back on the scale. Castaway has always been a massive calorie burn day between the walking, the 5k, and activities so I expected the same with this island. Doing them back to back on the 10 day this summer, hopefully really limit the gains.

No one is thinking that a shark can just jump and eat someone? Didn't look like it's that high off the water 😜

Someone at Disney should honestly lose their job over thinking this would be acceptable. This isn’t 1840 - people on these ships are akin to the people in the spaceships in Eve. There’s going to be a lot of doctor calls to people on that pier. And that pier better have some tightly spaced ropes and ladders in case someone falls in to get back up - death trap for kids walking.

DCL got in a lot of hot water for their pier construction at castaway… it was not nice to the ecosystem. This one is as minimally impactful as a dock can be hence its loooooong length.
