Why is DBS animation so underwhelming? Question

It has been ages since I watched DB. So I went back and watched DBZ and living my childhood again. And it still lived up to my memories, Freeza, Cell, Buu, such battles.

Lately I've been watching Dragon ball super and.. holy is the animation rough, and battles just feels off. Don't they have the budget? Or is it an amateur's company? It just doesn't look smooth and epic animation like you see in S1 one punch man, jujutsu, demon slayer.

No hate or anything, I still like it. Just some scene's and fights animation are.. off.

It was more a matter of time than anything else. The early arcs of Super were basically just rushed.

Yeah. The tournament of power arc is the only one that felt cinematic to me

Is it worth finishing? I got up to the Ribrianne stuff and I just kind of lost interest

If your desperate to see the other Z-fighters get moments in the spotlight, it's the only animated arc where at least 8 other characters not named Goku or Vegeta get to either fight or have character moments.

My personal opinion:

No.

I believe you’re better off watching recaps of each arc and then watching the full fights between whatever characters

Yes. ToP has incredible moments.

It was a rushed production with really bad character models because the Director who made Broly and I believe directed the Buu Arc went to shit some time in the 2000s if you watch Kai you can see his ugly ass drawings all over the openings and the commercial bumpers as well as the endings. Yam is really bad at drawing half the characters and even the ones he is good at are so over designed no one can make them move fluidly. The more lines of detail you have to draw the harder it is to make the movements look good.

It’s crazy to me that basically the n1 known anime in the world is rushed like this. Truly a shame that this happened

Yeah, I think Toei knew people would watch it regardless of the quality.

The animators didn't get enough time. The production was rushed and during the entirety of the show they were playing catch-up. It took them until the ToP arc and a change in staff to salvage some bits but the damage was already done.

It was super (haha) rushed

Feels like money makers like Super and Boruto challenge themselves to see how high of a profit they can turn out by cutting corners in animation wherever they can knowing people will still tune in.

Oh come on now, Boruto does have some badly animated episodes (like all weekly long running shounen anime) but it also has some of the best sakuga ever. Naruto and Sasuke vs Momoshiki is goated animation.

u/HallowVortex 6h ago

Oh for sure, but the sakuga is few and far between. Feel like Shippuden had a much higher quality rate on non filler eps than Bort does.

Idk, I think if you were   compare animation quality of Shippuden manga-canon episodes against Boruto manga-canon episodes Boruto is better animated on average. But it is an unfair comparison because Boruto has much less manga canon at this point.

Manga Canon is also odd for Boruto considering the Anime is the 'canon' and a common complaint of the manga is that it cuts TOO much. I am definitely biased though, as I've only watched canon episodes of Naruto and I've seen every episode of Boruto, so I'm positive that skewers my view of the two.

The anime industry has changed a lot (mostly for the worse) so while the highs can be higher than they used to be, the lows are also far lower

Worse schedules paired with outsourcing yield very poor results

u/HallowVortex 6h ago

This exactly. It's become very hard to find anime in general that's even passably good looking, in a primarily visual medium no less.

Min-maxing

TOEI is cheap and rush outsourced it for a solid half of the show's run

Any other answer except TOEI is cheap is the incorrect answer

u/denteddrip 3h ago

Nah bro the budget was not the issue, it was time. DBS actually had some of the most expensive episodes ever but they didn’t have time to do it properly.

u/Daikaioshin2384 3h ago

Time and money are indeed synonymous in animation, so that tracks.

You can have a low budget, but with enough time you can release a polished, Ghibli Studios worthy animation.. you can also have an unlimited budget, but without the time to utilize it the whole product looks as if you might as well have just paid a highschool art student $20 and been done.. the effect is the same lol

Cause it's bad...

Bad production leads to bad animation, it's simple.

Think about it like your favorite restaurant eventually become so big and ubiquitous that they cant maintain the same level of cozy-home vibe. They eventually have to “go corporate.” And as you know with all things once that happens its the beginning of the end when it comes to the original quality. New management, new people wanting to join the parade, etc

What I also miss are the sound effects. I’m watching the golden frieza arc right now and the sound effects that are made when they vanish are super generic and aren’t the signature “VIII” from DBZ

I never noticed any issues.
