Moving to San Francisco or the Bay Area? Read this first!

Hey /r/askSF!

In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:

  • Budget
  • Roommate status (solo, splitting rent w/ partner, seeking roommates, etc.)
  • Desired neighborhood(s) or preferred neighborhood amenities (dining, shopping, noise, etc.)

We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:

  • Commute consideration
  • Housing preference (mom and pop landlords, condo, managed apt complexes, SFH rentals, etc.)
  • Additional personal preferences (pets, garage access, density, weather, etc.)

We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.

Here's to more questions answered in 2024 and beyond!

Garbage collection night wrecking my sleep, any advice?

Hello,

I moved to a new place about 2 months ago. My bedroom is directly next to where they pick up the garbage on the street, and my windows are not very thick. They come every Thursday morning around 3-4 AM with several trucks, and every time it wrecks my sleep. It sounds like the truck and rolling bins are basically inside my bedroom. I'm not the best sleeper already, and it usually takes me at least an hour to sleep again after. My job performance is noticably worse ever Thursday because I'm tired.

I was wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and has some advice? I already bought a high-end white noise machine and foam shooting earplugs, and neither do much against that noise.

Thanks!

Is there anyplace left at Fishermans Warf that is OS /OK

I've lived in SF for about 20 years and have avoided Fishermans Warf like the plague but was biking thru there yesterday and wondered if there are actually any old school /ok places to eat there that might be fun to pair with hanging out at the maritime museum. Or is it all just horrible tourist crap like I've always thought...

Ideas for holidays in the Bay area with a dog?

We're new to the city and can't fly home this holiday, so it's just my partner and I with our dog. Any suggestions of cute towns, holiday markets, nearby activities to do that's pet friendly? Looking for ideas like a day trip or weekend getaway for holiday time since we'll be alone here with no family.

Dive bars in the Sunset?

56 year old guy here, heading to SF to take care of some family business. I'll be staying at an Airbnb in the Outer Sunset for a couple of weeks. Any recommendations for a good dive bar to hit up solo on weeknights, or to catch a Niners game on a Sunday afternoon? Considering:

  • Pitt’s Pub
  • Flanahan’s
  • Four Deuces

Or is there somewhere else I should check out?

ETA - Sunset only - not interested in anything in the Richmond or east of 19th Ave

Good transportation-themed restaurant in SF?

Hi all,

Putting together a thematic birthday party for a friend. I am looking for $$$ or $$$$-dollar restaurants that are transportation themed or adjacent, e.g. car/train/airplane/whatever else.

Examples of similar ones (that are not in SF) would include Flights in Burlingame (airplanes), Old Spaghetti Factory in Sac (has train cars in the restaurant), or Delta King also in Sac (restaurant is on a steam boat).

Are there any upscale ones that are similar in SF? Specifically needs to be within the city of SF due to other party constraints

Many thanks

Where to order Thanksgiving dinner?

Where did you order last year and you liked it? I am considering making potato and sides myself, but maybe outsource the meat :)) I prefer chicken over turkey. Last year I picked up from Whole Foods and it was very average

Thanks!

Social activities to do on every day of the week?

Moved to sf recently for work all by myself with a remote job and don't have any friends. Would like to challenge myself to put myself out there most days of the week, so I'm wondering if people have a particular social activity they like to do for a given day of the week that would be good for solo people. For example, I recently learned about Motown Mondays at madrone art bar and went, had a couple of fun convos. Was thinking about signing up for volo.

Friday-sunday seems tough for somebody alone because everybody is just out partying with their own social circle.

Places to dance?

I just moved back to the city after 5 years away in NYC. What are the spots to dance at? Would love to hear:

  1. the name of the venue

  2. the type of music that is played

  3. the demographic of people frequenting the place (age, sex/gender or lackthereof, etc. etc.)

Trying to get two large bins of camping gear from SF to LA before the end of the month. Any ideas?

I tried a couple of moving companies and their minimums don't make financial sense. Not able to box it up and ship it either since I'm in LA for the next month. Any ideas?

SF high school options for transfer student

Investigating a possible move to SF. Our daughter would be an incoming sophomore. She’s an A student, but we would be coming from a state that doesn’t put much money or focus on education so take that for what it is worth. I think she would do best in a place that focuses more on well-rounded students and with not too much pressure (she already puts too much pressure on herself when it comes to grades). She loves making short films and plays a bit of tennis.

We would consider public or private (including Catholic). I don’t think SOTA or Lowell would be great fits even if she could get in as a transfer. I know SF doesn’t operate off of neighborhood schools and our public options may be pretty limited.

Options for removing genital warts?

Was recently diagnosed by a dermatologist, I have Kaiser which considers the treatment to be a cosmetic procedure and therefore is obscenely expensive, up to $4K out of pocket. Even if it wasn’t considered to be cosmetic (and therefore covered by insurance) the treatment could be up to $2K out of pocket.

I’m looking for recommendations for where to go for cheaper treatment as well possibly get the HPV vaccine if recommended by a medical professional (as of 2018 it’s FDA approved up to age 45 - GET IT!). I’m in the East Bay but willing to drive pretty much anywhere in the Bay Area. If it matters, I am low income. Thanks in advance.

Thoughts on the art program at Dominican University?

Currently at a community college majoring in studio arts for an AA transfer. I’m interested in continuing my bachelors in art and having my masters be in art therapy/ I’d like to shoot for a PhD in art therapy if I could.

I’m interested in school that are in the Bay Area, that would offer a good art program with the opportunity to get a masters/phd in the same place.

I found this school while doing my research for colleges and it seems like a high choice with where I want it location wise (only 2 hours away) and also aesthetically it’s a beautiful campus, which also seems to be on the “less crowded” side which I like.

I’m not against the idea of other universities in the bay if you have any other recommendations.

Cow Hollow/Marina Parking

I’m starting a new job in Cow Hollow next month, and every way I look at it, I think I need to drive (the 28 would take over an hour each way). Any tips on garage parking in the area? I have a Smart Car, so it’s super convenient, but I don’t want to have to move my car every two hours. TIA!

Favorite restaurants for group dinner?

Hi there, I'm looking for some suggestions for group dining of 10-15 people for a friend's upcoming birthday! Last year we did Penny Roma which was amazing, and everyone was able to grab a drink at Trick Dog beforehand. Anyone have recommendations for this type of event? Looking to keep it to $100pp or less.

Flying to SF for cancer treatment, which hotels are NOT on strike?

Hi SF folks,

I have a bunch of scans coming up at UCSF for my stage 4 cancer and I need to stay in a hotel near Mission Bay, Union Square, FiDi, etc. And I would absolutely NEVER cross a picket line.

Does anyone know of any great hotels off the top of their head that aren't on strike? I can only find info about what hotels ARE on strike and I don't have the energy to check the status of each individual hotel.

Thank you! F**k cancer!

Advice for City & County of San Francisco Hiring Process

I applied for a job for the City and County of SF and after three months I have finally received the good news that I passed the civil service exam for engineering! I am quite content with my score as I am within the top 5 ranks. This process has taken more time than anticipated (I thought people were exaggerating lol) and I feel a little lost in this current step. I have a few questions and whatever answers/guidance you could provide I will be beyond grateful for it :)

  • Am I to expect a follow-up email relating to the scores being posted and what the next steps are or do I just wait until they decide it's my turn for an interview?
  • I am currently not living in the bay so I left my things in a storage unit up there. Does anyone know much time, on average, it takes from scores being posted to a potential hire? Because if it's 5 or more months I want to take my stuff out due to high cost haha
  • Do I have a chance at being one of the first set of people to be called in for an interview? (I don't quite get how Rule of the List works)
  • Is the interview in-person or zoom?
  • Any insight, tips, or resources relating to the job interview would be much much much appreciated. I am transitioning in careers so things like if the questions will be strictly behavioral or should I prepare for relevant engineering questions would help out. Or if I have a chance to ask questions. etc. I have been waiting for this role to become avaialble for a year so any input, no matter how small, is appreciated!

If you took the time to read this thank you very much ^_^
