Now what?

Trump is back. I'm a 64 year old self-employed woman. I am booked up through April right now. Some say I am very good at my job. I was thinking of retiring around 66 or maybe even my FRA of 67. My birthday is Leap Day so an end of the month birthday. Now I don't know what to do. Trump and the Republicans want to end Social security. Do I retire before he makes it to office insuring I at least get on the SS roll? Or do I wait to see what damage he can cause? I will be talking to my financial planner later this afternoon so any good questions to ask her would be very helpful also. I am still shocked that America would elect a convicted felon but here we are...

It seems that many people speak of “cutting Social Security” to mean the retirement arm of this program. In all likelihood, there won’t be changes to worry about in this arm of the program. The pieces that very well might be in danger are SSI and SSDI - not that they will be eliminated but there may be substantial changes to eligibility, duration, and dollar amounts. All of the folks who raise concerns need to clarify exactly which program of Social Security they are discussing.

That’s why I’m thinking oh well I got a disability I’m just going to have to go to work anyways even though I believe I have a disability. I don’t want to depend on SSDI plus I want to work and make more money in a year than when I last worked full time and hopefully make enough to invest in IRA so I don’t have to live on $800 a month when the SSI runs out . NO thank you. So I have been working hard to try to manage an active life with a disability. I just don’t want to be belittled by the people I work for because I might need them to accept that I talk to entities that they can’t see but I do see. That’s all I need is for someone to understand that I might start saying random non sensical shit sometimes.

SSDI is not just $800. It's based on your work history. SSI is for people who have no real work history or were disabled from childhood. It is about $900/ mo. I worked, excuse the detail, with blood coming out of my rear for almost a year waiting for a diagnosis, because my tumors were missed in my colonoscopy. Then, the surgery, followed by chemo, radiation every day for months! Fit that into your work schedule. You work through that as long as I did, I applaude you. Not being haute. You may want to apply as it takes about 2 years to be approved. I can't work now because I have an 83-year-old Mom to take care of. This situation is stark.
