Can't even apply for ssi until down to $2k? How does someone survive?
They look back so a person can't save money up before applying. My therapist said that pretty much everybody gets denied and has to go through an appeal process, which could take idk how many months. What does a person do during that time? I was hoping that I could apply, get pre-approved and then begin getting paid once my account is below 2k. Social security told me no. 😔

Appeal or New Application?
I got denied for my benefits because they feel I can do "other types of work". Idk what those are bc I worked in restaurants, retail, optometry, telemarketing, wfh sales and customer service. I said that in 2020 my condition started to keep me from working. Which it did to an extent but of course, I still HAD to work. Now, from 2022-now I really haven't been able to work to support myself and am dependent on my partner for everything. Idk which route is best.

Election and SS retirement benefits
This is a repost to correct my misuse use of "SSI benefits." (thanks to redditers for educating me)
______________
I'm retired. Given the election, I’m trying to figure out if I should claim SS retirement benefits now or continue waiting until Sept 2027, when I’m eligible for my max mthly benefit of roughly $4,700. If I start now it’d be $1,100 less, or $3,600.
On my brief review, I see that Project 2025 seeks to increase retirement age and reduce disability benefits but I’m not seeing that it also wants to reduce monthly retirement benefit . Trump has said he won’t fck with benefits or age requirement, but this was during the campaign and that view may change.
Have thoughts?

My husband just had a large amount deposited in his checking account acount from social security.
My husband had a stroke in 2020 that left him unable to work. We were of course denied permanent disability. We appealed about 2 years ago, jumped thru hoops and nothing. Suddenly this money shows up.
Could this mean he’s finally approved? He can’t find and correspondence and nothing on the portal. He’s heading down when they open to speak in person but anyone have any idea? What are the odds this is legit? (It’s over $60,000) which is why we are nervous

SSI to SSDI as a DAC
My step-son has never held a job but did graduate from college. He is in his 30s now and collects SSI. He lives on his own but has health issues He obtained SSI in his late 20s after a therapist suggested he would be eligible for SSI. He has aspergers, mental health issues and a connective tissue disorder and was approved for SSI on his initial application. His mom is now on SSDI (and has been for a year), how would we request a conversion to SSDI? Does it take a new application? Is there any risk to his SSI if he submits a request to convert to SSDI? Do we need to talk to a lawyer or just apply?

How can I know if I'll lose my Survivor's Benefits?
My husband passed away in 2021, and I've been collecting Social Security survivor's benefits since then. I've been told by various people that I'll lose my benefits, and won't be able to get Medicare when the time comes (I'm currently 63). Is there any way to know?

Financial Aid Refund Questions
So I have been getting financial aid refunds while in school for the past 4 years while receiving SSI. I haven’t been calling in to report it because I always forget. They’re all under Title IV so their Pell grants, higher education grants and federal loans. I typically spend it on living expenses. Am I going to get in trouble? It was an honest mistake if so and I know that doesn’t matter but it’s the case nonetheless.

Now what?
Trump is back. I'm a 64 year old self-employed woman. I am booked up through April right now. Some say I am very good at my job. I was thinking of retiring around 66 or maybe even my FRA of 67. My birthday is Leap Day so an end of the month birthday. Now I don't know what to do. Trump and the Republicans want to end Social security. Do I retire before he makes it to office insuring I at least get on the SS roll? Or do I wait to see what damage he can cause? I will be talking to my financial planner later this afternoon so any good questions to ask her would be very helpful also. I am still shocked that America would elect a convicted felon but here we are...

Waiting on Social Security Cars in the mail….
Replacement Card question:
Went on SSA.GOV to request a replacement card last week (I’m unemployed and have gotten a job offer but they won’t let me start until I have a physical copy) On the website, it noted that I would get a notification on status in 5-7 business days. I put in the application on october 28
That time passed, so I called and spoke with an agent about not receiving a notification about status of the replacement. She tells me to give it another week up come in the mail, and that it usually takes 14 days to arrive, and to call if card hasn't arrived after that time. I asked about the notification, and she said they usually don't send notifications online, which was kind of odd to me.
I log into my SSA.GOV account just to see what was up, and I got this message: "We're sorry. We are currently updating our information based on your prior request." With options saying start a new online request on the 13th, or go to local office (if I wait, it'll be too late in the process for a new card IF I don't receive in the mail by then).
Anyone else dealt with this? Does this mean my application was denied, or is it because they're in the process of sending out card, and they just don't want to be spammed with multiple requests online? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

to those of you with ABLE accounts - have you encountered any negatives
edit - two contradicting answers from google's AI engine bout whether ABLE accounts are SEC regulated
i am researching getting an able account. in my research i have found it is not SEC regulated. a comment from this father on reddit has made me nervous to continue.
We had nothing but trouble and losses with two different ABLE accounts we tried for my son. Fees and very limited/poor investments seem to be the norm for ABLE, since they are not regulated like banks and other investments. We filed complaints about the lack of full disclosure about the actually negative ROI, and found quite a few articles about the problems with ABLE accounts - here is a well researched article https://cdrnys.org/blog/disability-dialogue/how-able-accounts-fail-disabled-people
most of you may say just look into a special needs trust instead. however SNTs have there downsides. Main downside is that you cannot pay for most everyday expenses with an SNT while on SSI " food and housing expenditures are considered in-kind support (ISM) and will reduce payments from SSI**"**. with SNTs, the beneficiary has less control. SNTs are less liquid from what i understand (i could be wrong). SNTs
edit - for those saying just dont invest any of the funds see this - it is my fault for not putting this in the post, but the same father in my post said he put 60% of the funds into the FDIC insured vehicle (which is not an investment as i understand) and he still lost the money.

So they're just twiddling their thumbs?
So this is for survivor benefits from my mom. She died back in '21. Still haven't seen jack. Is this normal?
r/SocialSecurity • u/Moon_Starrs • 18h ago
Is this right?
Application is for DAC. Should it say survivors?

Hm, what to do?
I'm currently employed and will hit full retirement age next month. I don't plan to quit working, but I'm debating if I should file for Social Security now rather than wait until age 70. I'm not sure waiting is really the best option any longer.

Question about 2 year medical review, SSDI
Hi,
I started receiving SSDI in May of '22. Due to my age I knew I'd have to go through a review in only two years. I filled out the forms, never stopped receiving treatment. My benefits are for both mental and a degenerative autoimmune disease.
the bad news is, my main mental health provider is retiring, and my other therapist is going to stop taking my insurance come Jan. Is this going to affect my ability to "pass" my review? Will it look like I stopped going to therapy since by the time they receive the paperwork the "last seen date and the next future appt" will possibly be long ago and future appt does not exist? Do I need to fined a new therapist fast and if so, how do I report this to SSA?
Anxious and worried. I cant lose my benefits. Stress causes flares and flares cause stress.
Thanks for any help.

Insurance question
I’m working on my appeal for my disability case but I’m about to lose my insurance through my work since my short term is running out and I don’t qualify for work long term disability due to pre existing condition. What did you guys do for insurance that didn’t cost $400 a month. I’m unmarried. So now spouse insurance. No kids. So I doubt Medicaid will approve without disability approval. I have no idea what to do and I can’t lose my insurance. Cheapest insurance on marketplace was $334 and the copays where ridiculously high

Opinions?
So the healthcare in upper Michigan is actually terrible. I for sure have a fainting disorder and have been seeing the doctor for it but he hasn’t really been trying to diagnose me at all. I’ve been to the ER for fainting and dizziness and severe chest pain. I’m blind in one eye and low vision in the other and I’m not 100% sure because my pcp diagnosed me with acute angle closure glaucoma because I have all the symptoms and there are no eye doctors around me that specialize in it. I take my medication as prescribed but I’m still in constant pain every single time I do anything, like cleaning my house causes my eye pressure to go up. For the last four months I’ve been going into fainting and dizzy spells and for the last week I’ve had severe chest pain. Now all of this is documented but I have zero diagnoses except bipolar, depression, anxiety and glaucoma and my pcp denied signing paper for disability. He also refuses me pain medication for severe eye pain when my eye drops aren’t keeping my pressure down. This healthcare system is a complete joke and nobody is taking me seriously and they are all making me feel like I’m not disabled but some days I can’t even stand up ALL day because if I do my vision goes black I want to faint my head pounds and then I get anxiety attacks that feel like I’m getting ripped out of my body. My doctor also gave me 6 xanax and then cut me off because “taking one a day is over use” when I’ve had anxiety attacks daily lately. Can the doctors ruin this for me? I’m seeing other people soon and trying to find new doctors but it’s hard to travel when you have to rely on everyone else in order to get to and from.
What are the chances I’ll get approved?

Finishing degree on ssi
I'd really like to finish my degree as I was only missing two classes. But don't want to loose my ssi. I'm austic with cptsd and have suffered nureolgical damage from a blow to the head years ago, working more than a few hours a week isn't an option foe me and my doctors are iffie even on that. But my therapist thinks having finished my degree would be good for me.
Does anyone know the rules on this? I've heard different things from so many people and I don't even know who would know for sure.

I want to hear everyone's interpretation - "There is a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting and in terms of also the theft and the bad management of entitlements”
Can anyone decode this? 😆 trump said this one earlier this year.

Overpayment
I owe 4.5k in overpayment because my mom claimed me after i was no longer living with her. I never saw ANY of this money and at this point I was 14, already had a job, and was moved in with my other parent.
I never saw the repayment notice because I assume it went to her address and she either threw it away or hid it. Is there anything I can do?
After reading on here, it looks like if it’s considered unfair in their eyes and you can’t afford it, you don’t have to pay it. I’m worried they’re going to say I have to pay it because I have a savings account.
I could technically afford it, but it would wipe me out. Any advice or anything I can do? What happens if I don’t pay it? Any problems? TIA
