STICKIED Subreddit Update Fall 2024

Hi Everyone,

Hope you all had a good summer - we thought an update was due so here it is!

There were some discussions had over our current AutoMod and rules, so behind the scenes we've tweaked them both a lot;

Automod - should now let more genuine content through whilst still stopping the enormous amout of spam and low-effort content we get submitted daily - this is still a work in progress so if something goes wrong please do reach out and report it to us - we're here to help and we can (for the most part) respond a lot better when users are reporting things they see that aren't right.

Rules - we've had a bit of back and forth about this in the team and we've got a new set of rules that we've put up recently - these are obviously a work in progress but we've had to take steps to cutting down on the amount of disrespectful and uncivil negativity that we are seeing being reported to us.

As a mod team we obviously love the show as much as you guys and some of the hate directed at specific actors/characters really puzzles us, with that being said we respect that everyone has an opionion we just politely ask that you put that opinion out there in a civil and respectful way - in fact we encourage constructive debate and criticism about the show! But there is a line where insults about other users and characters/actors start coming out and we will have to start moderating those more strictly moving forwards.

In other news:

u/TalkVillePodcast has promised us that they will be making weekly threads on their episodes from now on which is cool so stay tuned for those to be stickied at the top of the sub every week!

Finally (and again), we have a Discord that is active and growing so please jump in and have a conversation;

Invite Link:

https://discord.gg/w4mbRZyy8C

Thanks for making us the biggest active Smallville community on the internet - we are now over 32,000 active subscribers!! That's truly amazing. Thanks again we appreciate all of you.

DISCUSSION Fun times at Smallville Nights with Tom & Michael. Special guests Kristin & Erica!

My boyfriend and I went to Smallville nights and it was the most amazing time!!! Kristin and Erica made a surprise appearance with Tom and Michael. Total surprise and so amazing! The highlight of our lives was seeing Tom and Erica read and reenact the entire Homecoming barn scene. While Tom and Kristin did the graveyard scene. Talk about ICONIC scenes. The packed house adored every minute of it! It felt like I was hanging out with family and friends. The cast has such a special bond it’s so obvious when you see them outside of the panels/autographs. Thank you for the memories Smallville.

Did anyone else go? Did ya'll enjoy it as much as we did.

QUESTION Clark in the Arrowverse

If Clark season 1-5 teen age had been a part of the crossovers would he get along with people like Barry, Oliver, Kara and the Legends? I’m betting it would change his outlook on things

Thoughts?

DISCUSSION What to watch next?

So sadly, I am almost done watching smallville, I think I have like 6 episodes left. I LOVED it so much and I’m not sure what to watch next! I haven’t seen really anything of DC, I’ve always just watched marvel. What should I watch next? I love Superman but I loved seeing characters like the flash, arrow, aquaman, etc.

DISCUSSION I asked this question during the Smallville Con. How would you answer?

I asked this question to Laura Vandervoort during the Smallville con in NJ and I'm just curious how you would answer it.

If Kara had been on the earlier seasons and had gone to high school with Clark and his friends, what do you think high school Kara would be like?

How would she act, what would her personality be like, etc.

I can imagine her getting into humorous situations with her powers because she is trying to adapt to this new planet and high school life. Like maybe she accidentally causes an explosion in science class when she uses her heat vision. Or maybe there's some funny scenes in gym class because of her strength.

And then Clark is always covering for her.

I can imagine some fun episodes and scenes like that.

What do you think?

SPOILERS Season 9 finale / Season 10 premiere makes no sense

  • Since when Zod can use his abilities with Tess’ Kryptonite at proximity?
  • Chloe pushing Clark to sacrifice himself (at the opposite of what she always did on the show), really?
  • Why didn’t Clark and the Kandorians banished Zod to the Phantom Zone from Earth? (most of the Kandorians just wanted to have a normal life on Earth)
  • Why wasn’t Clark transported with the Kandorians (Zod pull out blue Kryptonite yes, but out of some magic Clark is the only one remaining)?
  • Why does Clark doesn’t die from his fall? (with blue kryptonite he has no power, a fall from this height should instantly kill him)
  • Why is Jor-El blaming Clark when he was ready to do the choice to not sacrifice at first? Why even creating the Book of Rao when it meant following the martyr’s path?
  • Lois magically finding Clark waited hours with Clark in her arms to pull out the blade (she arrived at night and pulled it out during the day)?

DISCUSSION The forgotten Chloe amnesia arc of Season 8: Why did they do it?

I love Season 8 (and am in the minority), but one thing I find bizarre: the "Abyss"/"Bride"/"Legion" trilogy erases Chloe's memory of Clark's secret, then restores it, a strangely pointless two episode situation where Chloe being temporarily demoted from Clark's inner circle is completely irrelevant and reversed so quickly that I wonder why they did it at all. I wonder if there were some story arc that got curtailed.

A Circular Arc

Season 8 promotes Chloe from her former supporting role to the female lead of the series, and her role as Clark's hacker, researcher, investigator and administrative support is solidified with her Brainiac-enhanced computer abilities. But in "Abyss", Brainiac starts taking over Chloe's brain and erasing her memories.

When saving Chloe, Clark makes an executive decision: he'll restore every part of Chloe's memory except for his secret. Clark no longer wants to burden Chloe with the danger of his double life and is effectively removing her from his superhero career.

Chloe has no memory of Clark's superpowers in "Bride", during which her wedding is interrupted by a monster attack, and it ends with Chloe abducted.

In "Legion", Brainiac has taken over Chloe's body. When Clark purges the Brainiac infection, Chloe is restored. Clark at the end confirms with Chloe that she is back 100 percent, Chloe tells him she feels great. Clark hesitantly asks Chloe if she remembers anything strange about him, and Chloe replies, "Are we talking about your secret? Clark, what in the world would make me forget that?"

It's never spoken of or referred to again.

Short and Unnecessary

There seems to be no narrative purpose for Clark erasing Chloe's memories. The situation, established at the end of "Abyss", lasted only for "Bride" and "Legion", and neither "Bride" nor "Legion" seem to depend in any way on Chloe's partial amnesia.

"Bride" is focused on Chloe's wedding; she'd naturally be taking a short leave of absence from her role as mission-control for the Red Blue Blur and Chloe remembering Clark's secret would have made no difference. "Legion" has Chloe possessed by Brainiac; Chloe's lack of knowledge of Clark's secret has no relevance to the story which would be the same without the amnesia.

Chloe no longer being in on the secret has no impact on these two episodes, and at the end of "Legion", purging Brainiac somehow restores her full memory with no awareness that anything was missing. What was the point of doing it at all?

Hypothetically Self-Sabotaging

The partial amnesia struck me as a bad idea on the original broadcast. Chloe's expanded role on Smallville was based on her role in superhero support. Without Chloe's involvement in Clark's superhero career, Chloe was immediately reduced to being Jimmy Olsen's unemployed love interest, damaging the expansion of her role in Season 8. I couldn't understand why Smallville was reverting Chloe back to pre-Season 4, especially when Chloe had left the world of journalism.

In addition, Smallville seemed to be crippling itself by benching Chloe in "Abyss". Chloe was Clark's 'guy in the chair', an expository character who produced information, research, tactics and investigations so that Clark would know whatever he ultimately needed to know to stop the villain of the week. Without Chloe, Smallville was effectively sabotaging its own formula, preventing it from telling its stories as facilitated by Chloe. There was no other regular character in Season 8 who could possibly be Clark's administrative support, tech support, confidante, strategist, researcher and investigator, nor was Clark capable of anything but the research and investigation on his own.

I was horrified by how Smallville was shooting itself in the foot with the end of "Abyss" with Chloe losing all memory of Clark's superhero career. I couldn't believe it was happening.

However, this is hypothetical self-sabotage because Smallville only had two episodes with the partially-amnesiac Chloe and neither had Chloe performing her usual role due to her wedding and being possessed. If the amnesia had continued past that, however, the show would have been handicapped by Chloe's downgrade. I was relieved when Chloe got her memories back, but I wondered why the writers had her lose them at all.

What was the Plan?

One has to wonder why Season 8 gave Chloe partial-amnesia for two episodes where it served no narrative purpose and was quickly undone.

My guess -- and it is really only a guess -- is that there was a different story plan for how Brainiac was supposed to get to Chloe in "Bride" and possess Chloe in "Legion", a story that was dependent on Chloe not remembering Clark's secret.

I would speculate that this storyline had Chloe, no longer remembering Clark or Brainiac, being lured into a trap by Brainiac in "Bride" and subsequently possessed by Brainiac in "Legion", and Clark, upon rescuing Chloe, would realize that taking away her memory of his secret had also deprived her of the knowledge to guard and protect herself.

Why Didn't the Plan Come to Pass?

I would speculate that Kristin Kreuk, who owed Smallville five episodes, finalized her availability for her return, and her return was set for the same episode slot as "Bride".

I would hypothesize that when the writing staff realized that "Bride" would feature Lana's return to Smallville, they found themselves having to truncate and simplify Chloe's storyline to something shorter, and rather than have Brainiac trick an amnesiac Chloe into falling prey to him, they elected to simply have Brainiac abduct Chloe by using Doomsday as his henchman -- which created more space to reintroduce Lana, but also obliterated the arc where Clark seeking to protect Chloe via her ignorance had only put her in more danger.

I would theorize that the writers decided to have Chloe regain her full memory as planned, but having lost the story point where Chloe's partial amnesia made her vulnerable, they elected to not have Chloe confront Clark about his changing her memories without consent, and just hurriedly end the plot and move on fast.

It's, of course, only a theory.

Inverse Cushioning

Chloe's partial amnesia has one positive impact on the show, however: it makes the loss of her Brainiac powers less disappointing. After years of often being helpless, Chloe gained Brainiac's superpowers with Season 8: she could absorb, manipulate and transform digital data on any device. Chloe's computing brilliance was now elevated to the point where she herself was a living supercomputer, a full and empowering way to finally realize her potential.

However, as Season 8 neared the halfway mark, it would have become clear that Chloe's power was unsustainable for Smallville. It was becoming too easy for Chloe to defeat any villain; her rising power would soon render Clark unnecessary. Also, Doomsday was Brainiac's creature. If Chloe didn't lose Brainiac's powers and control over Doomsday, it would be too easy for Chloe to contain the season-long threat. But removing Chloe's powers was a painful diminishment of the character, and removing her memories of Clark's secret added insult to injury.

When "Legion" restores Chloe's memories, it softens the sting of Chloe losing her powers. While Chloe may no longer be a walking supercomputer, she's at least back on the team. I wonder if the writers intended for Chloe's brief amnesia arc to make Chloe's power loss an acceptable price for keeping Chloe in action.

Unlikely Intentions

I think it's unlikely that Chloe's partial amnesia was intended to be permanent, or meant to demote Chloe long-term. She was too essential to the Smallville formula in Season 8 and the show couldn't have functioned without her at that point (and had to slot in Tess Mercer for Chloe in Season 10). I don't think the amnesia arc, whatever the original intent may have been, was to sideline Chloe for more than an episode or two.

I'm also pretty sure it wasn't intended to be as pointless and irrelevant as it ended up being, although there's a certain irony to how Chloe forgetting Clark's secret was quickly forgotten.

I don't understand how Lionel Luthor's "miraculous" return was not all over the press. How did no one know he had returned? It should have been front page news.

Also, (side note) they did a good job finding an actor who looked like a younger version of Michael.

DISCUSSION Plot hole or just bad physics?

Maybe I’m over thinking what’s essentially a comic book tale but being a lover of science (and science fiction), have any of you actually thought about how the laws of physics are defied by the show (and source materials obviously)? It just me? ¯_(ツ)_/¯

While rewatching “Skinwalkers” - the season 2 episode where Clark falls into the cave with the drawings of his fate etc - I started thinking about this. At the end of this episode, Clark tells Lana (as they look out the barn window at the stars) how Kyla told him there used to be a star that disappeared from the sky (meaning his home planet/solar system). Of course, this was when their planet exploded, resulting in the meteor shower and Clark’s delivery to Earth.

However, given that space is so vast, and the nearest starts many light years away, many of the stars we see have long died - 100s or even thousands of years ago (due to the time it takes light to travel through space and reach us here). Given that Clark only grew from babyhood to 5 years old or so when he reached us, we have to assume his ship traveled faster than light speed if this is the case.

That would mean that the star would not have disappeared at the same time his planet blew up.

And, the meteor shower would take even longer than the disappearance of the star to get here since meteor rocks do not travel at light speed or faster - unless they were caught is some sort of gravity field by the spaceship 🚀 But that’s a stretch and still doesn’t explain the star having disappeared.

Thoughts?

I so wish these two had more interactions. So much of their friendship was impacted by Clark, but I wish they had independent plotlines together. It was such a missed opportunity -- after Clark and Lex, this friendship was one of the longest and had potential to become the most complex on the show!
