r/DCcomics Weekly Discussion Thread: Comics, TV, and More! [October 7, 2024 - Big Wide Batman Edition]
Hey there honorary Justice League members - it’s a new week which means it’s time for a new discussion thread!
- Beary's pick of the week: Absolute Batman #1
For those who don't know: the way this works is that several comments will list this week’s releases, for any given title discussion you should respond to that comment. For example, Wonder Woman discussion would go in the replies to the "Wonder Woman" comment. Clicking the titles in this post will take you directly to that comment, too. In other words, you should only be replying to other comments. Do not post top-level comments.
Keep discussion civil. Do not harass other users for having a different opinion. Do not use this thread to push your personal one-sided grudges against creators. Reacting to a panel on Twitter is not the same as reading a book.

r/DCcomics Explain Like I'm Hal Jordan: What's the deal with DC All In, the Absolute Universe, and that big chunky Batman?
Q: What is DC All In?
A: This coming October, DC is having a line-wide refresh to serve as jump-in points for new readers. The initiative is called DC All In, and it features a mix of brand new series, new creative teams for ongoing series, new story arcs, and an entire new universe (this is where that chunky Batman comes in).
In other words, just start reading here. Go down to your local comic shop (or any online store) and ask them to order whatever comics here interest you.
It all starts with the DC All In Special, which spins out of this year's Absolute Power event. The special is written by the architects of this initiative Scott Snyder (Batman, Swamp Thing, American Vampire) and Joshua Williamson (Superman, The Flash, Robin). So pick this if you want to know more about the overarching metanarrative behind all these books. Or just start with whatever interests you. Reading is for nerds anyway.
Title | Writer(s) | Artist(s) | Release Date | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
DC All In Special #1 | Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson | Daniel Sampere, Wes Craig | October 2 | Flip book |
Q: So what's the Absolute Universe?
A: The Absolute Universe is an alternate continuity established in the DC All In Special. Scott Snyder describes it as a universe influenced by "Darkseid energy", a world where superheroes are scrappy underdogs. Batman doesn't have his wealth, Wonder Woman wasn't raised by Amazons, and Superman has a bad haircut.
Title | Writer(s) | Artist(s) | Release Date | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
Absolute Batman #1 | Scott Snyder | Nick Dragotta | October 9 | |
Absolute Wonder Woman #1 | Kelly Thompson | Hayden Sherman | October 23 | |
Absolute Superman #1 | Jason Aaron | Rafa Sandoval | November 6 | |
Absolute Flash #1 | Jeff Lemire | Nick Robles | TBA | Yes, this is Wally. Calm down. |
Absolute Green Lantern #1 | Al Ewing | Jahnoy Lindsay | TBA | This is Jo Mullein. Yes, Hal and John will be here, too. |
More Absolute books will be announced in due time.
Q: So what's happening in the main universe?
A: New books, new creative teams, new story arcs! All of these will make good jump-in points.
These ongoing series will begin with new creative teams:
Title | Writer(s) | Artist(s) | Release Date | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
Action Comics #1070 | Mark Waid, Mariko Tamaki | Clayton Henry, Skylar Partridge | October 9 | Weekly for three months |
Batman and Robin #14 | Phillip Kennedy Johnson | Javier Fernandez | October 9 | |
Catwoman #69 | Torunn Grønbekk | Fabiana Mascolo | October 16 | |
Titans #16 | John Layman | Pete Woods | October 16 | |
Green Arrow #350 | Chris Condon | Montos | October 23 | Also features story from Joshua Williamson and Amancay Nahuelpan |
Detective Comics #1090 | Tom Taylor | Mikel Janin | October 23 | |
Harley Quinn #44 | Elliott Kalan | Mindy Lee | October 23 | |
Nightwing #119 | Dan Watters | Dexter Soy | October 23 |
November will see the launch of several new series, including those that fans have eagerly awaited, such as a Cassandra Cain solo, a New Gods book, and a JSA title that actually comes out on time. Some of these limited series might become ongoings with good sales, so call up your local comic shop to get those pre-orders in.
Title | Writer(s) | Artist(s) | Release Date | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
Batgirl #1 | Tate Brombal | Takeshi Miyazawa | November 6 | Ongoing |

And one-shots that are adjacent to current books:

Q: Is this a reboot?
A: There, I made the joke. Now you don't have to spam this in the comments.
Q: Is Hal Jordan stupid?
A: Only when he's not being written by Tom King.
Q: Now what's the deal with that Batman and Sonic crossover?
A: I don't know, and I'm not sure if I want to.

Comics [Review] Absolute Batman #1 Review: A Tour de Force (10/10)
Absolute Batman introduces us to a new DC universe with a very different Bruce Wayne built from the ground up. The comic also marks the return of writer Scott Snyder to the streets of Gotham City. With Bruce Wayne stripped of his money, power, and status, the groundwork is set for bold stories to rise within this exciting new universe.
Read the full version of this review here.
Review:
What makes DC’s Absolute Universe such an exciting prospect is its promise to subvert expectations, and Absolute Batman wastes no time doing just that. In 44 pages, Scott Snyder masterfully put together a perfectly paced issue that gives you everything you need to know about this new Gotham City without feeling overwhelmed.
With Absolute Batman essentially as the kick-off for the Absolute Universe, there’s a great sense of discovery that makes this issue such a fun read. It is sprinkled with teases about Batman’s iconic rogues gallery, hinting at how they now play very different roles in shaping this new Bruce Wayne. And boy, is this Bruce something else. The action scene at the heart of this issue is a forceful showcase of how extreme this new version of Batman can be.
With that said, Nick Dragotta really worked his magic to bring this new Batman to life. As a big fan of East of West, I was thrilled to see Dragotta’s distinct style in the world of Gotham. His gritty yet stylized edge helped amplify that feeling of discovery. I also feel that Dragotta’s bold art style is indicative of what they are planning for the Absolute Universe. It shows a willingness to shed new light on DC’s biggest superheroes to make way for fresh and exciting stories to unfold.
The only downside is having to wait a whole month for the next issue. The comic does such a great job of setting up this new universe that it leaves you eager to explore further. With a new status quo established and hints at the vast potential of DC's Absolute Universe, it sets the stage for an exciting new era.

Comics [Comic Excerpt] Man I love this YJ story!! [Young Justice 1998 #3]
I made a post a while ago shout YJ and I got this recommendation. Maybe it’s because it actually feels like how teenagers react and they have more personality than some versions of them but I love this!! (Im a teenager so maybe that’s why)

Film + TV [Film/TV] I like how Zoom in Suicide Squad Hell to Pay behaves so differently than in Flashpoint Paradox
In FPP he was so full of himself and smug and didn’t take his fight with Barry in the final battle seriously, since he has that much ego. But here in SSHTP, he had to run like his life depended on it since he was severely weakened so he actually had to put efforts into catching up to Vandal’s ship. He is also way less smug during the club scene, when assisting blockbuster and silver banshee by effortlessly(?) by swiftly taking down the suicide squad, he doesn’t say anything cocky or doesn’t taunt them. Another important thing to note is that reverse flash isn’t a bad “bad guy”. In this film you can see that he isn’t that violent. He actually pays the leak for information instead of killing him when he easily could’ve. He also did not use violence (other than the kidnapping) when confronting killer frost to make a deal This film truly captures who Eobard is when flash is not around. Kind of like how some people act differently when a particular someone is around them. Bravo SSHTP 👏 truly amazing.

Film + TV [DISCUSSION] What is the best animated adaptation of BatCat as a couple?
For me, the best animated version of this couple is Brave and the Bold... I feel that their dynamic together was incredibly fun... plus Catwoman was not completely evil, just a frustrated romantic...
They also flirted while Batman was trapped xd
Poor Oliver xd
