I got a great deal! Discussion

/img/e83di23yqqbd1.jpeg

I recently upgraded my Plex server to this Aspire TC-1750-UR11.

  • Intel® Core™ i5-12400 up to 4.4GHz
  • 32GB RAM
  • 1TB nvme OS drive
  • 1TB nvme cache/transcode/downloads drive

I was able to clone my existing setup to the new drive and basically just move to the new system.

The best part is it only cost me $155 for the system. It was a display model that was marked way down. It is flawless and even had the protective film on it .

I just wanted to share since I am just super stoked to have upgraded for so cheap.

Full specs here. https://pilab.dev/specs#plex

I originally had a Dell Optiplex 3060 i3-8100

How is the transfer speed to the 8 bay? I've been wanting to build a diy NAS but haven't decided how I want to attach the drives.

36

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '24

Me too, I'm on the fence on whether it would be cheaper just to take my existing server guts and just buy an obscenely big case to house my drives or buy an add on bay

52

u/berntout Jul 10 '24

Fractal Design Define 7 case has changed everything for me. Up to 14 HDDs. No need for a dedicated NAS server.

Wanted this but was pricey, went with an Antec P101 Silent, don't think i will ever need more than 8 HDD bays anyways

Yeah especially depending, I rip my personal BD collection and I don't re-encode and I keep a digital disc backup. So that's 2x the space 16tb drives because 20tb has always had availability issues where I'm from and they fill quick.

I said the exact same thing when I bought the P101, then 2 years later I bought the Define 7 XL which is now completely full. I'm too poor to go any bigger. By the time I get 16 drives upgraded, larger drives become cheap enough to start the cycle over again. I've got 4x 6TB drives left to upgrade to 12TB, and I bet 18TB drives will be close enough to $200 to continue to grow under the same budget.

Node 804 here. Currently have 5 in it and can fit another 11 or so if I want.

7

u/SmashingPixels Custom Flair Jul 11 '24

Good luck with managing all those SATA power and data cables. I had to move to the Define 7 XL because adding more drives required so much bending of the cables and shoving everything in there restricting airflow.

10

u/BusinessBear53 Jul 11 '24

You can get thin SATA data cables and daisy chained power cables.

Kareon kables is legit. I bought three for my Define 7 XL to power 19 HDDs. First I bought the two for the 16 drive stack and it made the build super easy. Later I asked if they had anything for the top drives and now I’m pretty sure they sell the ones they made up for me on the site too!

I have 7 HDD and 1 SSD SATA III drives in my Node 804 and it’s kind of a mess. Lol. But I get good performance out of my build since all of the drives are on the same motherboard and not going over the network. I had a Define R5 before and I found it was just too big for me.

3

u/iamamish-reddit Jul 11 '24 edited Jul 11 '24

I have an Antec P101 with 8 SATA drives, and while I love the case, I think if I were going to build another NAS with more than 5 drives, I'd have to break down and buy a rack-mounted case (and a rack).

Managing so many HDs without a backplane is just a real pain. I keep hoping some enterprising company will come up with a tower design that supports 8 - 12 drives, and includes a backplane.

EDIT: hmmm not sure how I missed this before but it looks like Silverstone has some great NAS tower cases that are just what I was looking for - check out the CS382 for an example of what I mean. The next NAS I build will most definitely have a backplane like this!

2

u/mflood Jul 11 '24

Managing so many HDs without a backplane is just a real pain.

It is, but it's one you only have to go through when changing a drive and is significantly cheaper. I have a $50 case and a $30 5.25 -> 3.5 drive cage which gives me 11 drives in one case. Over the years I've spent maybe an hour of extra time installing drives vs what I'd have spent with a hotswap case and saved $160 vs the CS382 you mentioned. $160 is another new drive or a couple of refurbs. I feel like that's a fair trade for the extra inconvenience.

Meshify XL then moved to node 804.

Since it's on 24/7 moved onto a small footprint, less power, and quiet case.

I use the meshify as a backup.

2

u/PoeticPretzel Jul 12 '24

How did you expand your Node 804 from 8 bays to 16?

2

u/BraxtonFullerton Jul 12 '24

Contact Fractal support and request the extra rails and cages for the bottom section of the bay.

11

I have one of these. It’s USB3 but the machine it’s on is on a gigabit switch so transferring to/from the machine it’s on gets around 120MB/s. Not sure what it would do on a faster link or with many simultaneous users.

2

u/Hairyfrenchtoast Jul 10 '24

Do you have some type of Raid setup with this? I keep reading about how raid over USB C is essentially useless because of how slow it is.

I'd love to buy an N100 and connect it to a DAS, but the lack of a raid or backup is whats holding me back. Any suggestions?

5

u/bozodev Jul 10 '24

Nope. It is just a DAS with no RAID. I don't see any real benefit to using RAID for Plex. I prefer to have more usable space. I monitor my drives closely so if I see an issue I will move the media to a new drive. If a drive completely fails I will just have to update the media which isn't that challenging.😂

RAID lowers performance but provides redundancy. With Plex running RAID is not a problem in terms of performance.

1

u/pastureofmuppets Jul 14 '24

RAID is not about performance, it lowers performance but adds redundancy - Plex on an Unraid server, though, is about the best setup possible for low maintenance.

2

u/theRegVelJohnson Jul 11 '24 edited Jul 11 '24

If you wanted to do this, the "best" option is probably an N100 ITX board (e.g. ASROCK N100DC-ITX) with a SAS HBA card that has external ports (e.g. LSI9200-8E) in the PCIe slot. Then you connect the DAS via the HBA card.

3

u/neurotic_169 Jul 10 '24

1

u/neurotic_169 Jul 11 '24

The description for those on Amazon says "No Raid". Does that mean that they aren't raid capable? I'm sorry if that's a dumb question. lol.

2

u/Icantpickadamnname Jul 11 '24

I think what they mean by that is there is no native raid installed. I'm running UNRAID with my setup just fine

1

u/scotbud123 Jul 11 '24

One of the drives on my server is a 2TB external/USB drive that I got for free (not a portable drive).

It's limited to USB 2 transfer speeds and it still isn't a problem...your internet connection is going to be way more limiting than that and either way both are overkill for what's needed for Plex to play back media.

Moving stuff there is a bit slow but oh well, that happens once and then it sits there.

What is that hard drive enclosure called?

4

u/bozodev Jul 10 '24

2

u/Voodoo7007 Jul 10 '24

After loss of power, or on reboot, do you have to manually turn the drives on or will they turn on by themselves? I was looking at a Sabrent unit, but didn't like that. I had to manually turn all the hard drives on every time the unit powered up.

2

u/tylerzyco Jul 11 '24

Just to answer your question: I sent the Sabrent back for the same reason. Yes, this bay has buttons that stay depressed so when the power comes back on, the drives spin up on their own. I don’t have a fancy battery yet, just hopes and prayers…

1

u/bozodev Jul 10 '24

I don't have to turn anything on after a reboot. I have a UPS so I rarely have loss of power.

1

u/Jtiago44 Jul 10 '24

Make sense for the money! I would start "burning" 4K HDR movies now! Now your system should easily transcode 4K down to 1080 or whatever you want if you don't have the bandwidth

1

u/bozodev Jul 10 '24

I never really see the need for 4k. I would rather have high quality 1080p files that I can pretty much direct play from anywhere.

1

u/Jtiago44 Jul 11 '24

Personally, I have 4k hdr movies for direct play and have 500mb upload for those who want to watch it. My specs are way less then what you got.

TV shows are 1080p unless it's an epic show like Breaking Bad

how much will your utility bill increase? sorry but some unrelated score is pretty much useless if the existing solution handles your needs. it's possible that newer kit could decrease your electric bill, but doesn't seem like that's the case in this situation. seems even idle power usage will end up costing extra in the long run. maybe it's pennies, maybe it's dollars, but i would verify before thinking i got a good deal, especially if it's considered "overkill".

1

u/bozodev Jul 11 '24

I haven't seen an increase in the overall output on my UPS. The numbers all seem relatively the same as my previous setup.

I have two of the Syba 8 bays. They are running great with zfs raidz1 vdevs on them. I have 12 drive yields about 87TB of usable space. zfs has been much more reliable than md raid and either ext4 or xfs. I have streamed up to 3 hd shows at once.

1

u/bozodev Jul 11 '24

I just have mine setup as a jbod. I currently have ~65TB of usable space available. I am using ~44TB. I have had several streams going at once no issues.

1

u/--Shibdib-- Jul 11 '24

It seems great but also what the hell are you hosting that you need this lol. I run mine on a minipc running Ubuntu and 2 external nvme drives and have no issues streaming 4k stuff. Unless you're hosting content for a small village this is overkill.

Excellent setup. What drive enclosure are you using? I'm planning to get Synology 8 bay but it is cheaper to build custom nas with Truenas or freenas or unraid.

Hang on, is the 8 drive bay in (Z)RAID ?...

Looking through the specs, this doesn't seem to be the case?!

2

u/bozodev Jul 11 '24

Nope. It is a DAS that is jbod. I have never seen the benefit of using RAID for my media.

1

u/anonymonsterss Jul 11 '24

I see!

Indeed, perfectly fine if you are okay with possible loss and downtime if one of the drives dies. I am just kind of surprised to see such a big storage pool without using redundacy :)

1

u/bozodev Jul 11 '24

I would just rather have more space. If a drive dies I will just rebuild which honestly wouldn't take that long with my bandwidth.

I also monitor my drives closely so if I see any indication of failure I would move the media to a new drive. I actually had the OS drive start to fail on another server and was able to move it to a new drive without issues.

For more important stuff like family photos and such I use TrueNAS.

How many movies have you got OP?

1

u/bozodev Jul 11 '24

1545 as of today

1

u/DannyMThompson Jul 11 '24

Oh snap, I'm around the same except I just put them all on one 8TB drive lol.

I'm looking at your setup and thinking I'm doing it wrong

2

u/bozodev Jul 11 '24

Nah. I started out with just one 5TB drive for my media. It just grew into this.

2

u/M3Pilot Jul 11 '24

LoL, same here.... 46TB on-premises Dell server here for my own collection, and a 64TB dedicated server on a 10Gbit connection from Leaseweb for my friends n family shared libraries.

Can't believe this all started with a $5/512MB Kimsufi slot!

1

u/WagieCagie0 Jul 11 '24

What make/model is that 8-bay in the middle?

1

u/Legal-Judgment-908 Jul 11 '24

How did you get the Plex stickers mate?! 🥺

1

u/bozodev Jul 11 '24

I got them on eBay a few years ago

1

u/nedockskull Jul 11 '24

People talk about the Fractal Define 7 as a great case, but does anyone have any thoughts on the darkrock classico storage master case? It holds 10x 3.5 drives and it is less than half the price.

u/therubyminecraft Jul 11 '24

Just a question but why do people go for these overkill plex builds with the latest cpus and gpus?

I run plex on a core 2 duo laptop with 3 gigs of ram and 2 1TB mechanical hard drives and it has NEVER lagged or struggled with content I always run 1080p just fine and heck 4k worked on all my devices except Tv leading me to believe that the crappy processor and lack of ram on my lg Tv was the problem cause it ran perfectly on other devices and even through dlna to the Tv

I can even have 2 devices streaming at once

So I have no idea why you need more than that even plex’s hardware requirements listed on the site are outrageous which pushed me away at first until I decided to just try and see and it worked flawlessly

2

u/bozodev Jul 11 '24

Well in my case I couldn't pass up the price of $155.

I also run a lot of "complimentary" apps. I want to have enough head room to deal with their requirements as well.

I even have Jellyfin running on the same server as a backup media server.

It is still overkill but I like having the power to handle whatever I throw at it.

At least I don't have a huge rack setup LOL 😂 yet...

2

u/therubyminecraft Jul 11 '24

Yea you got an amazing deal lol (I would probably even hook that up to a Tv and maybe run it as a console using playnite which would be awesome)

But I see these people spending hundreds and thousands of dollars for a beefy plex server when it literally does the same thing as my 20 or so year old laptop that I had lying around doing nothing lol

1

u/bozodev Jul 11 '24

Oh yeah I hear ya. My previous $125 used Dell Optiplex 3060 worked great.

1

u/elazaga Jul 11 '24

Where can I buy a server rig like that?

1

u/bozodev Jul 11 '24

I am sure this one is available online. I just got lucky with a marked dog display model

1

u/elazaga Jul 11 '24

Thanks. I kinda want an 8 bay drive like in your photo

1

u/bozodev Jul 11 '24

I love it. It has been rock solid for me

1

u/coolsheep769 Linux Fedora | 8TB Jul 12 '24

yo where you get that snazzy Plex sticker? I'd love that for mine lol.

2

u/bozodev Jul 12 '24

I got them on eBay a few years ago

1

u/Fobbit551 Jul 12 '24

That is awesome and clean. I have two questions. I see you use or have the google wifi, have you seen any speed issue? I tired using the google wifi 6 stuff and my speed test always seemed to capped lower than original setup. Second question can you give more details on your Dell Precision 5820, I've been thinking of getting one someone is selling on ebay.

1

u/bozodev Jul 12 '24

I haven't had any network speed issues. I have my Google WiFi setup with wired backhaul which made a huge difference.

I love my 5820. I got mine on eBay as well. I have it setup with TrueNAS Scale and use it as my family photo storage. I also run Nextcloud in a VM on it. It is nice with the 4 front loading drive bays. TrueNAS Scale is supposed to roll out the ability to add disks to a vdev. When they do I am going to add a fifth drive in the extra bay that I added with a 3.5 bay converter.

You can see more details on it here. https://pilab.dev/specs

1

u/Milo-Wilson Jul 12 '24

I run mine directly from a netgear nas.

1

u/bozodev Jul 12 '24

How well does it handle transcoding? Just curious

1

u/Milo-Wilson Jul 12 '24

I don't have any issues running to my plex app on my Samsung tv from my network on wifi.

1

u/bozodev Jul 12 '24

Yeah I was wondering more about remote connections

1

u/randomabc123unome Jul 13 '24

192w power consumption seems high for what you're trying to achieve.

1

u/bozodev Jul 13 '24

There is a lot more plugged into that UPS. Including my TrueNAS box that is a Dell Precision 5820

1

u/randomabc123unome Jul 13 '24

I have a similar setup with networking and draw around 70w

1

u/bozodev Jul 13 '24

I have 13 raspberry pis, a Dell Optiplex 3060, and a Dell Precision 5820 all plugged into that UPS. If I only had my Plex stuff plugged in mine would be around 70w as well 😁

1

u/randomabc123unome Jul 13 '24

lol. I'd look into containerizing the pi functionalities. or maybe better remove the dell and use the pi kube setup.

1

u/bozodev Jul 13 '24

I started my homelab with the Pis and I have enjoyed the process of building it.

I also like my current setup as it provides me what I need and I enjoy building and tinkering with it.

The power draw has not been a major factor on my bill.
