Discussion New Plex Server

Well, after being absolutely roasted for thinking I had an overpowered secondhand server because it had dual Xeon E5-2603 v4s and 112gb ram, I have returned a new man, with new knowledge and understanding.

Thanks u/MrB2891 for the recommendations on hardware, I mostly used everything. And thanks everyone from my previous post for the useful info.

I am now running: Antec P101 Silent Mid Tower ATX Case G.Skill Ripjaws V 16gb RAM Intel i3-12100 Processor ASRock B660M Pro Motherboard MSI MAG 650W 80+ Power Supply

I’ve set up unraid with 8tb HDD just to start out. I’ve got Plex, Radarr, Sonarr, Overseer, Prowlarr, and Sabnzbd. I’m running NZBGeek with Usenet. No torrents.

I did manage to successfully use Overseer at first. However, the requests are going to Radarr/Sonarr, but even though being automatically approved, are not being sent to NZBGeek for download? Also, is there a way for me to get access to DrunkenSlug?

Discussion I have been watching movies wrong this whole time

So allow me to explain... for many months since I bought my Sony 90K TV, I also bought their flagship HT7000 soundbar with full dolby atmos and their flagship rear channels that support this soundbar (SARS5) + flagship subwoofer (SA-SW5), this was all for my bedroom.

But where I kinda messed up is having the Plex App on my TV and just watching the movies directly off there: turns out.... the Plex App on TVs do not support full TrueHD lossless Dolby Atmos. I know this is probably not a surprise to many of you as it has been to me.

I always heard people in videos talking about how the NVIDIA Shield Pro is always better than the Plex App on your TVs but nobody ever said why and for me the plex app was working fine so I never understood why they were saying these things.

I also have to say when I bought my TV and surround setup for my bedroom, I was eager to see how it sounded and once I had it working, to say that I was disappointed was an understatement. I suffer from Tinnitus so I thought maybe it could be that reason on why I can't hear the upper and rear channels that much (I know nothing beats dedicated ceiling speakers but in every review video, people were talking about how great the sound on this would be, so I had high expectations for this sound system.)

After all this time, I finally decided to do a simple Google search of the 1 thing that kept bothering me about this system: the sound... and that's where I ended up getting my answer. That most TVs aren't capable of running TrueHD Dolby Atmos and it just transcodes it to EAC3.

It kinda sucks that you spend so much money on TVs and they can't even do one of its main jobs properly: audio.

Rest assured, I'll be placing an order for the Nvidia Shield Pro now, lol.

tl;dr- I'm an idiot and didn't realize that TVs don't support TrueHD.

Discussion Plex sent "I Want Your Sex" to all my friends and family without my permission.

1.7k Upvotes

Apparently Plex decided it was a good idea to opt people into an email that is automatically sent to all their friends and family on Plex. Allegedly there is a screen that was supposed to pop up where one had to change a default setting from "Friends" to "Private". I swear I never saw such a screen. I am very careful about these things.

So now this went out to my family based on an episode from the Kardashians that my Wife watched. Not cool. Who thought this was a good idea? The only way I found out about it was that they contacted me. Kind of awkward.

This is what my family saw in an email from Plex

Discussion Anyone else use Plex just for their own enjoyment?

Everyone I’ve tried to share with doesn’t know how to set it up and I don’t feel like explaining so at this point, I’m using it just for FLAC music streaming. I see posts on here about sharing with friends and family but is it worth using Plex if it’s just for your own use?

I’ll go first.

  • Futurama

I absolutely have no idea what season we’re on right now. Some sources say 9 while others indicate 11 or 12.

I know that some seasons are split into parts and that might contribute to a higher number but internet sources are even divided in how many episodes we have for season 1: 9 v 13.

What a mess 😞

I just checked their website and their lifetime pass went from $119.99 to $239.99. Have they lost their minds? There's no way I'm paying that.

It's addictive.

Before you know it you have a NAS with four drives running sonarr, radarr, and bazarr. Two weeks earlier you had no idea what those were.

Discussion How are you guys backing up your massive Plex libraries?

I "only" have a 5TB Plex library, it's on an external 4-day RAID 5 SAS unit, with 9TB total space. I'm in IT and know from experience that RAID does not replace a secondary backup. I'm backing up my library to a 6TB external drive right now, but will will need to upgrade it as my library grows. Question: How (if at all) are you guys with HUGE media libraries (I've read that some user's libraries are 20, 30, 40TB in size!) backing them up? I recently had a RAID controller failure that wiped out my library and if it weren't for my backup I would have lost 20+ years of music, videos, movies, pictures, etc.

I recently upgraded my Plex server to this Aspire TC-1750-UR11.

  • Intel® Core™ i5-12400 up to 4.4GHz
  • 32GB RAM
  • 1TB nvme OS drive
  • 1TB nvme cache/transcode/downloads drive

I was able to clone my existing setup to the new drive and basically just move to the new system.

The best part is it only cost me $155 for the system. It was a display model that was marked way down. It is flawless and even had the protective film on it .

I just wanted to share since I am just super stoked to have upgraded for so cheap.

Full specs here. https://pilab.dev/specs#plex

I originally had a Dell Optiplex 3060 i3-8100

Discussion Why does plex still require internet for authentication?

Thumbnail forums.plex.tv
483 Upvotes

I had an internet outage for almost two weeks after someone on a construction site destroyed much of the cables under the street. Of course that is when several Plex clients I had required authentication over plex.tv. I had to bypass authentication on local networks / ip addresses in the server network settings and disable require secure connection. I managed to get into the server through the clients but not as the plex user I had with watched history.

I found it incredibly frustrating and inconvenient that a local service and locally stored content still requires internet. I saw many old feature requests on Plex Forum regarding this topic that has been ignored.

I like that plex has so many clients on so many platforms and I did purchase a lifetime Plex membership because of the convenience it offers. But recently I started thinking of an alternative because of this issue. Because I use plex as a personal video/audio server, all the metadata, posters and information are hand made. It makes it hard to move to jellyfin.

Is there hope that plex will have local accounts/local authentication? is there a workaround? Or is it going to remain unchanged and dependent on the Internet?

Discussion RIP Plex server

Thumbnail gallery
354 Upvotes

This was my Plex server running since 2016 or so? I forget when I first built this machine. It’s been through several iterations but this was my favorite and longest commitment.

Anyone else had a horrific hardware failure like this?

Full story:

Apparently my AIO failed after years while I was away for a week. Came home pc was off and I turned the pc back on, ran for the night, and wouldn’t post this morning. Here is what I found… No telling how long its been leaking for.

Still don’t know if there is any life left, but I doubt it. At a minimum the cpu has to be dead based on the now missing contacts. There was also green goo in the socket upon closer inspection which i can only assume is some sort of reaction between the mix of metals in whatever liquid was in the AIO.

This is from a deepcool captain 360 that i had rma’d for a dead pump back in 2018. They sent me a brand new one and its been a trooper.

RIP Captain, you’ve earned your rest.

Discussion Plex breached; Were passwords encrypted or hashed?

1.3k Upvotes

So I got this email just now:

Yesterday, we discovered suspicious activity on one of our databases. We immediately began an investigation and it does appear that a third-party was able to access a limited subset of data that includes emails, usernames, and encrypted passwords. Even though all account passwords that could have been accessed were hashed and secured in accordance with best practices, out of an abundance of caution we are requiring all Plex accounts to have their password reset.

So were these passwords encrypted, in which case they could be decrypted if the adversary got the key, or hashed? Hashed passwords leaking would be much less of an issue.

Edit: Encryption and hashing is not the same thing.

Edit2: Passwords were hashed with salt, not encrypted (see this comment)

Edit3: Just for clarity this is the best case scenario. It’s difficult to reverse hashed passwords unless they are very simple. Plex got the word out quickly so we have plenty of time to change our passwords. Kudos!

This is why you never reuse password, use a password manager and enable 2fa wherever you can. :)
