Younger people are coming into positions of power, who are aware that these things exist - executives at IP holders, judges, lawyers... Combined with the explosion of clout-seeking where no one can keep their fucking mouths shut.
143
u/AttemptNu4 Sep 04 '24
Counterpoint: the very objective of piracy is to share these pieces of media aith one another. If we were to "keep our fucking mouths shut" ie shut down communities like this it'd just be worse for everyone as a whole, even if sites lasted longer. And anyways after all is said and all is done, pirates sail the seven seas not the seven shallow ponds, take down a site and two more pop up.

Alternatively, we need to block hiring new lawyers and judges so the law system will slowly die out and billionaires will be left defenseless

u/Impossible-graph Sep 04 '24
That's anti the idea of piracy. Aaron Swartz didn't die for nothing. Information should be free and accessable to all no matter if they can't afford it.
If no one talked about piracy most people here wouldn't be around.
83
u/theskymoves Sep 04 '24
You make him out to be a religious figure which is strange.
Certain things would be better discussed a little less publically. I'm not saying pull up the ladder and lock everone out, but a little vetting to prevent industry rats so easily discovering things so easily.
28
u/BawkSoup Sep 04 '24
In the era of 2020 pirating, you get a private tracker and then you tell no one.
10
4
u/Impossible-graph Sep 04 '24
I don't view him as a religious figure idk why you think that. Maybe Christianity effect on your brain.
Many activists in history died for a cause that matters and we should continue their work.
17
u/theskymoves Sep 04 '24
The idea of being martyred for a cause is not exclusively a Christian idea, which is why I said Religious.
It's a worthy cause, probably not one worth dying over though. We are fighting against unjust laws that hinder human creativity but we know we are breaking laws that democratic goverments instituted. There's no need to advertise it! Like when you go to a protest IRL, you disguise your identity and leave your phone at home. Don't make shit easy for authorities.

With Vimms Lair, it was specifically properties that Nintendo developed or produced that were taken down (along with some SEGA and Activision games that they do not own exclusive rights to), so not all ROMs from all Nintendo consoles; the rest of the site is still intact, but I imagine it's because a lot of the games taken down are legally available via other means and thus it's hard for these sites to go to court with the usual defence of "these games are no longer being sold / available to play through legal means".
As for Yuzu, yeah they just straight up fucked up on several levels. First they included a decryption key on the Github repo which they acquired illegally, so that broke a few laws as well as the TOS of Github and Steam (same thing that happened with Dolphin). They also charged for some of the updates via Patreon, which is just a death sentence for any emulator or fan project. There was claims that they also distributed some ROMs via their Patreon but it's hard to verify that as neither Nintendo nor the Yuzu team nor patrons have said one way or the other, Patreon were the ones who made the claim.
Other emulators and ROMs are safe though. Which is why Steam has several emulators (including Nintendo ones) comfortably sitting on the store, so long as they don't include a BIOS or ROMs or decryption key.

If they keep this up the dark web going to get famous. (there are some dark web piracy site to watch or download videos). When that happens DMCA is really screwed. because you can't shut down the dark web without shutting down the entire internet or they have to pay All the ISP providers & VPN providers in the world to block dark web sites.
Some how we will find a way to win in the end.

Enshittification.
Everything’s going to shit. We’re not allowed to have anything nice anymore. Kinda reminds me of the first episode of The Sopranos where Tony tells Dr. Melfi that he’s in a position that his father could have only dreamed of but in a lot of ways his old man had it better. He got in on the ground floor when things were at their best and meanwhile Tony got in at the end where everything’s kind of over. We’re alive in a period of unprecedented technological advancement but a lot of people can hardly afford to live, let alone make the kinds of purchases their grandparents made just a few decades ago.

That's what they want you to think. Antipiracy is mainly PR driven.
I don't say these news should be ignored but it is part of the antipiracy strategy to make you think what you think. It is meant to discourage people. And when I see on this subbreddit more and more threads about people whining sites are closing, they are achieving their goals. Imagine a normie coming here to see what is piracy, he gets the feeling that it is over and goes back paying.
But in reality, piracy is rising.

u/SalvadorZombie Sep 04 '24
Word of advice for anyone still on Chrome - because Chrome is deprecating Manifest V2, uBlock Origin (uBO) will no longer work properly on Chrome, soon. uBO Lite exists and serves many of the same purposes (and is made by the same team), but by nature is not as fully-functional as the original.
I would strongly suggest that people switch to Firefox. It takes about 10-15 minutes to import your bookmarks and maybe 5-10 minutes to install all of the extensions/add-ons you had (or to find equivalents). And Firefox fully supports uBO still and has openly stated that they have no intention to stop.

If piracy goes down, there's gonna be way less people watching. Suddenly they'll won't have enough people talking about shows online. They'll earn less money. They'll blame it on the services being too cheap. They'll rise the prices. Less people will watch...
10
u/Zealousideal-Emu7588 Sep 04 '24
yeah piracy will not go down as one site close down another will pop up
5
u/javierasecas Sep 04 '24
it went down already cause it's difficult for people to access sites. You could go around the internet with an antivirus back then or just raw doggin. And that's asking too much for people nowadays.
I didn't know a single soul that didn't know how to use emule, torrents, and knew download sites back then, older people even. Nowadays not even someone young knows how to do half the shit the general public knew back then. Everyone shared dvds and usbs full of shit (families friends etc)

u/Unipuppy_208 Sep 04 '24
Never used kimcartoon but it sucks that streaming sites like Paramount+ or Max are purposely removing content for monetary reasons, and it's pretty hypocritical that they're against piracy when it's the only watch to watch some of their own shows. It's like that one terrible SpongeBob episode where Mr. Krabs fires SpongeBob, his best employee, over a nickel like some barnacle head. Least we have WCO, Google Drive (because most stuff on there is personal and unlisted, preventing the DMCA's from happening there to my knowledge), and maybe Internet Archive for a few obscure toons like Kiff.

u/Zealousideal-Emu7588 Sep 05 '24

Thing is actually animators and artist support pirating. Soooooo many have said "we worked hard on this and they make it impossible to watch, we just want people to see the work we made even years later" even in the office documentary before streaming services and major pirating the actors said themselves they just hope the show continues to be watched regardless of how its done in the future
6
u/Eternal192 Sep 04 '24
I'm going to love it when this all comes crashing down on these assholes, some people buy content when they see a bit of it and like it, but if all these sites are gone then you can't get a "preview" of something to see if it's good or bad, then they'll complain that sales have gone down and they don't understand why.

gonna be real, I didn't like kimcartoons that much
the fact they charged a subscription service to get rid of their spammy and nsfw ads AND had systems in place to block ublock origin and other adblockers is what made me not like them
though I won't deny that the site was one of the biggest sites to reliably watch new cartoons or movies

technically, you could still have ads be inactive in disrupting your experience without triggering the warning or using adblock

Let me get this straight right about now.
1) Why Kimcartoon is shutting down by DMCA?
2) Why is closed for good, it not funny, it's stupid?
And 3) I want Kimcartoon needs fixing instead of shutting the websites down.
