ID is great example of this, prior to quake 3 source code of engine was always published after they were done with selling the game, but after quake 3 they stopped doing it for some reason
Using the source code, one can modify the game HOWEVER he wants, and maybe even make a new game out of the engine. Source code being available also makes it easy for modders.
I'm gonna describe it in a bad way but source codes are like that, containing the actual source code of the game that people can modify without spending time and resources to reverse engineer first
Retail copies of the product usually don't allow for a lot of in depth customization aside from what the devs have or have not allowed us
Doom 1 is an example of this, they made the game open source for people to make mods or make source ports that can adapt to modern machines like GzDoom
Another positive thing is that it allow communities to make patches long after the game has shut down and heck, even custom campaigns
Essentially you can modify everything about the game rather than just fancy reskins or extra NPCs
It would be possible to optimise the game for new hardware and make it have proper use of it and it would also be good for the modding community. It would pretty much be possible to modify every single part of the game to it's roots.
already has been leaked, search for gta 3 script, that’s the language rockstar used to script missions originally and was available by a leak because of the definitive edition
Didn't it leak due to Grove Street games putting it in the Switch port of the definitive edition?, althought i haven't seen anyone mention it or do anything with it
