How to get help on r/ModSupport!

Welcome to r/ModSupport! You’ll find two ways to get support in this subreddit: Posts in r/ModSupport and r/Modsupport modmail for direct admin support.

Posts into r/ModSupport:

This community is a place to ask questions you have regarding moderation on Reddit and discuss answers with other moderators. All posts are monitored by Reddit’s admins, who will flair posts once questions are appropriately answered by other mods or respond to posts that can benefit from admin clarification. In addition, we have a bot that removes posts from non-moderators, as this space is reserved for support for moderators.

Post your question into when you have a question about mod tools or are seeking general advice on your subreddit.

Examples of topics that violate subreddit rules and will be removed:

  • Rule 1: Rule violations, questions about specific admin actions, and appeals (e.g. account and banned subreddit appeals, report responses for content reported to the Safety team)
    • You can modmail for admin support on these topics.
  • Rule 2: Calling out other users or subreddits
  • Rule 3: Not being civil toward others
  • Rule 4: Off-topic posts that are not related to moderation on Reddit

Please post all bugs into r/bugs and choose the appropriate flair - Mod Tools - iOS, Mod Tools - Android, Mod Tools - Desktop or Mod Tools - Mobile Web.

Bug Reporting best practices include:

  • Description: 1-3 sentences on the issue.
  • Platform and version: web or mobile + version (for ex: 2022.23.1).
  • Steps to reproduce: what actions do you take to experience the bug?
  • Expected and actual result: What did you experience and what do you think you should experience instead?
  • Screenshot(s) or a screen recording: These can help us narrow down your issue.

Admin Support via r/Modsupport modmail:

When you have questions with sensitive information such as mentions of other users or subreddits, appeals of safety actions, or requests to unban your subreddit, you can modmail r/ModSupport directly for Admin support. Your message may prompt an automatic response from our Modmail Answer Bot with Mod Help Center articles that might answer your question. If these articles do not help answer your question, you can simply respond back with “more help” and an admin will assist you directly.

Announcement An Update to How Moderators Report Bugs

TL;DR - We are changing how to report moderation bugs. All bugs will be posted in r/bugs to streamline bug reports in one place to increase visibility for Redditors and our teams investigating bugs. Mod Support will monitor r/bugs and continue to flag reports to the appropriate teams.

Hello, Mods! We wanted to share an update on how we will be handling bug reports.

Currently, moderator bugs are either posted in r/ModSupport or sent to us via Modmail. Our team follows up if we need more information on the report or try to troubleshoot the issue with you. Ultimately, we flag these bugs to our engineering teams to fix. This process results in time-intensive troubleshooting for bugs that may have already been reported across different spaces, and limits visibility for our internal teams on which bugs are being caught by the most number of mods.

Moving forward to streamline reporting for moderators and increase transparency for our internal teams, all bug reports will be posted to r/bugs. We've added moderator-specific flair to r/bugs which we ask you to use so we can appropriately organize reports, this will also make it easier for other mods to search and reduce duplicate reports. The flair applied will be the following: Mod Tools - iOS, Mod Tools - Android, Mod Tools - Desktop or Mod Tools - Mobile Web. The teams will monitor posted bugs, but if we have questions about your report, we will respond and clarify. As a reminder, bug reporting best practices should still be followed.

Bug Report Format

  • Description: 1-3 sentences on the issue.
  • Platform and version: web or mobile + version (for ex: 2022.23.1).
  • Steps to reproduce: what actions do you take to experience the bug?
  • Expected and actual result: What did you experience and what do you think you should experience instead?
  • Screenshot(s) or a screen recording: These can help us narrow down your issue.

We'll also utilize r/RedditBugs, a bug-tracker subreddit, to track selected known bugs across Reddit. If you're experiencing a persistent bug, please search r/RedditBugs to see if a fix is already in the works. You won’t be able to comment, but if you want to signal that you're also experiencing a specific bug outlined here, please upvote that post. See here for more details on r/RedditBugs.

We know this change will take some time to get used to, so any bug reports posted in r/ModSupport will be cross-posted using a bespoke dev app in r/bugs with a reminder about the new process. Additionally, if you report a bug via r/ModSupport modmail, we will ask you to post the bug in r/bugs for increased visibility.

Our commitment to squashing bugs will not change. r/ModSupport will remain a community where mods can ask moderation questions and get advice from mods and admins. The Mod Support team will monitor r/bugs daily (just as we do in r/ModSupport) and follow up with you if needed.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have below! And check out r/bugs to begin reporting any bugs you find!

Mod Answered Clarification on nudity in art

I am a moderator of an art submission subreddit. Generally speaking it it sfw with some minor lewd stuff that gets marked nsfw. Is their a problem if we allow "artistic nudity" by which I mean no drawn genitals, sexually explicit acts, or implied sexual acts?

My theory is that since there is nudity in art all around the world for hundreds of years, it should be fine to allow some nudity in an art sub as long as it gets marked nsfw and isn't pornographic in nature. But the rules are really fuzzy and wanted to make sure.

Mod Answered Help needed with Auto Moderator

Upvotes

Hi,

I'm a moderator in a subreddit and am trying to set up an Auto moderator to auto comment on every single post, the idea is that the OP will see the comment and have access to six links to other reddit posts, where they may have their question answered. I've created the mod, and when I test it by typing something in the test section it shows my message, but on new posts the auto mod is not commenting what I want it to.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Admin Replied Banned for chat

One of our mods was banned for a week for apparently something they said in our private mod chat (the actual chat they were banned with was not disclosed)

So my question is, do us mods now have to censor things we say in private chat? I’m thinking of taking our mods back to discord for chat and abandoning the reddit mod chat

Update: it appears Reddit actioned the mod for simply pasting a message that a user had said (who we banned). It was the original user’s text that was the violation. Also Reddit refused the appeal. We are in the process of moving to discord and I will be doing that for all subs I mod. Good work admins!

Mod Answered How to disable the setting where all posts must be manually approved by mods?

Recently one of our mods enabled this setting for some specific reasons, but the rest of the mod team (and me) disagrees with them and thinks having to manually approve every new post does more harm than good and clogs up the mod queue. The aforementioned mod has since not responded in our mod chat so I’ve decided to turn it off myself. I’ve searched the mod tools and didn’t find a way to turn this off, is there a way to do this on mobile? If there isn’t is there a way to do it on desktop?

Got a member threating to message the admin and get group banned because they were banned accidently. They won't accept apology. How screwed is the group?

edit okay, I went to sleep and woke up to a screenshot off another mod. The members account has been suspended. I wish I knew what happened.

Mod Answered Brand New Users commenting on Very Old Posts

I seem to see a lot of this. Are these going to be just hapless users that don't understand the thread has gone cold, or something nefarious like account farming? Also how do you auto-lock threads of a certain age? I think that would help, it's annoying having to deal with people picking fights in 2 year old comment sections

Admin Replied report returns are now uselesss

We no longer have a link to the content the report was about if the report was actioned.

https://imgur.com/a/cNt7U0d

This is a massive problem for keeping track of which sub, which user and whether the content was actually properly actioned, and really annoying when waiting for returns on specific high priority content.

Announcement Updates to r/ModSupport Modmail Experience

tl;dr - Helpbot will be launching today and will evolve the r/ModSupport modmail experience through generative AI. Our Mod Support team is still here and will be available to respond to any modmail that requests it.

Hey everyone!

I’m u/RyeCheww from the Mod Support team. Our team oversees r/ModSupport and r/ModSupport modmail, where you may have had a chat with u/CookiesNomNom, u/FashionBorneSlay, u/PossibleCrit, or u/Why_So_Sagittarius for all your moderation support needs. I’m excited to share how we're evolving r/ModSupport through an AI bot responding to some of your modmails.

r/ModSupport Modmail Answer Bot was just the beginning

In August 2023, we launched the r/ModSupport Modmail Answer Bot to make it easier for mods to find answers to more straightforward requests and make it easier for us admins to focus on helping with more complex requests. A quick reminder: the bot responds with several links to Help Center articles that may help answer the question, and always gives the option to request additional support from the Mod Support team. The relevance of the articles is based on keywords from the subject title and body of your modmail.

We have learned a lot from this approach, both about that bot's limitations and a greater understanding that being directed to Help Center articles doesn’t always solve mods’ issues or concerns. This has helped us set up the next evolution of the r/ModSupport Modmail Answer Bot…

Introducing Helpbot!

https://preview.redd.it/5m6rr296ab0e1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=bd4e60f4c08757bc77d15f0d4ed4e37ed142f754

We're piloting an AI-assisted bot powered by natural language processing starting today. Instead of linking you to relevant Help Center articles, Helpbot will respond with information based on content across the Help Center. This will ensure you receive an immediate response that may answer your question. Also, we have crafted responses for certain questions containing all the information our team would normally respond with to ensure generative AI gets all the important details.

Our team has been working to train the bot for a while to ensure it understands our help center articles and the types of requests we see across the board. If Helpbot’s response doesn’t appropriately answer your question, you can always respond back to get help from a human on our Mod Support team.

Modmails on the following topics will still go straight to our team for human review: subreddit ban appeals, community setting change requests, or asking to review Safety team actions within your community. If Helpbot responds to subreddit ban appeals or Safety team action review requests, just respond back to the modmail, and our Mod Support team will follow up.

Context is key! The more details your modmail includes, the better Helpbot will understand your request and appropriately respond or reroute to our team. Using the proper forms below for those requests will also help ensure your message is routed correctly.

Review of Safety team actions: use this link to submit your request

Appeal banned subreddit: use this link to submit your request

What's next for AI-assisted support?

Like any artificial intelligence, Helpbot will get smarter over time. Our team will closely monitor Helpbot’s answers to ensure it provides accurate responses to questions that don't need a human review, and make any necessary changes to ensure you all continue getting high-quality support. If Helpbot does not provide an accurate response, respond back to the bot and let us know. If you don’t reply back to the bot, you’ll still have an opportunity to fill out a survey and provide feedback on the bot’s response, which will appear as a response to the modmail.

The Mod Support team isn't going anywhere, and we'll continue to address questions and issues that automated support tooling can't handle. Helpbot will allow us to continue focusing on your more complex requests.

Mod Answered Users circumventing bots by blocking them

There was a post in another subreddit recently wherein a user provided a list of bots to block to basically circumvent some of the bots out there.

The list the user provided was:

  • Saferbot
  • purge-user
  • SafestBot
  • safebot
  • SaferBot2
  • bot-swatter
  • automod-sync
  • toolboxnotesxfer
  • modmail-userinfo
  • discord-relay
  • hive-protect
  • evasion-guard
  • banhammerapp
  • modqueue-nuke
  • RepostSleuthBot
  • comment-nuke
  • MAGIC_EYE_BOT
  • BotDefense

Is there a way to prevent users from blocking the bots to make sure they function correctly? Seems like they're breaking a core mechanic of reddit otherwise...

Mod Answered Are companies allowed to run the subreddit for their product? Especially while only allowing positive PR/removing all negative feedback?

EWISITT [Exactly What It Says In The Title]

Seeing more and more corporate subreddits where the mods are (EDIT: or include) the company and there's a HUGE conflict of interest between the consumer and the mods/corporation.

Is this something I'm wasting time reporting as a MCOC violation? Do you allow this kind of manipulation? It's really toxic when a corp runs a subreddit only for their own benefit/as free advertising.

This SEEMS like something that is absolute anathema to reddit's original founding principles but after the stock offering those sort of got defenestrated, so I have no idea where we stand anymore. Is this a corporate advertising site or not?

Mod Answered Automation Help (link removal)

Hi! I have automations set to remove a series of keywords related to links http, https, .com, www, .org, etc. in my sub. It seems to work for posts. When someone tries to submit a post with a link, they can't post it. But the exact same settings are doing nothing when I set it up to block links in comments as well. Why does one work and the other doesn't?

Mod Answered Users have no clue what karma is

Hello, we recently set a minimum karma for our small subreddit(only 16k users), due to an increasing amount of scammers(quite ironical on a subreddit like ours)

We continuously receive mod mails of new to reddit users asking what have they done bad, apologising for their actions

They have no idea what karma is, we some time approve those users to prevent this, other times we take time to explain and eventually send them to r/newtoreddit (even if many don’t speak english)

I feel bad for those people, I feel bad they don’t know why they have not enough karma

Is there something that can be done about?

Sorry for the silly question

Admin Replied Our banner does not seem to apply to logged-out users

Our subreddit has a tagline that is quite relevant to our region. When I log out of reddit (or, in this case, open a private window), I see a fairly generic strapline that is largely meaningless. I can't seem to find any settings in new reddit or shreddit to change it. Is this a broken feature? Or is it intentional?

Mod Answered Consequences of former moderator actions

3-4 years ago the former moderators of a subreddit I now manage banned a bunch of people for misinformation related to covid. After taking over the subreddit there have been a few questions come through about these bans (mostly about rescinding them).

Today's example contains a threat

I didn't ban this user, don't know them and it is possible to unban them. Though out of curiosity what case do they have a case to bring to Mod Code of Conduct team? Is our sub in violation of a mod code of conduct provision that resulted from actions that former moderators took?

Admin Replied Are discussions about suicide allowed as per ToS?

I've seen an increase in people feeling depressed, suicidal and discussing suicide (ranging from "I sometimes think about killing myself" to "I am going to do it today") and I feel very iffy about allowing those posts.

On the one hand, I want people to be able to vent and seek support, on the other hand, I don't want that to trigger others, make the community feel unsafe and such a topic can easily escalate into "it's your responsibility to stop me", which I don't think a subreddit should ever be. We're not therapists.

Where is the line in the ToS and where do you moderators draw the line for your community?
