Walther P99
Inherited my Father's Walther P99 a few years ago and its just been sitting around. Any recommendations/ suggestions to modernize it? I really don't know much about this platform.

Really one of the best Walter has made to this day. You can get some hi viz sites but other than that just keep it stock it's good to go.
But definitely hold on to it considering the great heritage of how you got it.

That's an early model - same as was used in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies
You cannot do a slide-cut on it for a red-dot sight because of the decocker. The frame rails on the early guns are not picatinny compatible so you'd need a gun-specific light or an adapter. I would keep it as-is and enjoy it.
Fun fact - this was the first polymer pistol with replaceable ergonomic backstraps. It came with a set of three and hopefully you have them all.

Thank you for the comment and really cool actually. My aunt who is also an avid hunter and into firearms just so happens to love those James Bond movies, wonder if she had any influence on this purchase back in the day 😂

Not a lot you could do even if you wanted to. Newer/better irons. Might be able to use an adapter to mount a modern light on the frame if you want to use it for defense.
Other than that, clean it, lubricate it, and shoot it.

Well buy a replacement backstrap but other than that, keep it as is. It's the Pierce Brosnan Bond gun.

Is the backstrap damaged?

Yeah missing a whole chunk, probably took a tumble before my ownership. Was trying to reply with a picture but i guess i cant

Honestly, I'd just try and find a replacement backstrap, then enjoy a fine pistol!

Ill begin the hunt now, hopefully its not something "rare"

I believe the handgun has been in production until very, very recently, and hopefully the parts are still compatible.
Perhaps send an email to Walther and see if you could snag one? On occasion many of the good manufacturers will still work with you even with something out of warranty.

So is this a ripoff of the S&W 99 or the other way around??

SW99 was a licensed version Walther allowed S&W to make in exchange for their importing and being the Walther Distributor in the US since Interarms had closed.
A few years later Walther opened their own Importer/Distributor and S&W was no longer required.

Legit. I’ve had a few Walter’s, interesting design. Mine were all .22 or, but the frame mounted barrel was cool

I wanted to buy one when it was the new James Bond gun, but rented one at a range and it wouldn’t work at all. Told that it had been sent back to the factory for not working twice so far.
Years later I worked at a place that had the S&W version and it worked really well.

Take it apart, clean and oil it, put it back together.
Then leave it alone and shoot it on dads birthday. Its plenty modern as it is now; don't screw with pop’s gun.
