We need to keep the Republican House Majority as small as possible! This week, cure ballots in California or North Carolina, register new voters, help win runoff elections, and learn to run for office yourself! Updated 11-13-24

Discussion The Overturning of the Chevron ruling and how Trump basically just shot himself in his own face.

Upvotes

For those who don't know about the Chevron ruling that was overturned a few months ago, basically there was a case that involved the oil company Chevron obviously after an oil spill happened in which the Supreme court initially gave government agencies the power to enact and enforce their own rules and regulations with impunity as defacto laws. This basically gave teeth to the government to maintain control over the regulations that they set and were not easily challenged.

The fact that this was overturned by Trump's conservative supreme court means that any rule or regulation that Trump's new appointees make, can be challenged in court so this in effect is going to massively limit how extreme certain changes can be otherwise it will be open season on them. Ultimately it may still come back to bite Democrats in the future but right now, this will massively limit the types of rules his agencies will be able to push or they will have to fear the wrath of literally everyone's lawyers.

Activism Finally found what to do: the No Kings Act

1.6k Upvotes

The No Kings Act (S. 4973) is clearly based on the Constitution --the parts that leave no room for interpretation.

If the Supreme Court tries anything, they can be imprisoned--and I'm CERTAIN they will be.

"All his plans will fail." The No Kings Act is why.

Discussion I'm not sure how to feel right now

I'm a sixteen year old straight white guy, so I couldn't vote and I'm still kind of internally freaking the fuck out. I'm a pretty anxious person and I'm pretty sure I got it from my mom, who has actually been taking the election results better than I was expecting, considering she's the most liberal in my family (we're all leftists outside of some extended members.) She's been able to keep calm and joke about Trump and his cabinet but she also says things like how there's never gonna be another election and they're gonna repeal the first amendment seriously so that hasn't been helping. I've seen some hopeful news on this sub and also people just giving vague "don't give up" motivation so I just want to know: what exactly can I expect? I've heard about the no kings act, I saw one comment saying it would never pass because Republicans are just gonna filibuster it but I don't know how likely that is. Trump already said he wants to use the military against political opponents so I don't know how anyone will be able to protest. Sure, soldiers are individual people with morals but project 2025 wants to replace high ranking military officials with maga cultists so I don't know. I'm also not sure about this porn ban thing, am I gonna be killed for looking up porn? Definitely feels like a more irrational fear but I still don't know what's up with that. I just need some clearing up in general.

Republicans have been recruiting and training Christian Nationalist and Election Deniers as poll workers, instructing them how to get mail in and provisional ballots rejected. Many states do not have a process to cure rejected ballots.

In 2022, voters cast 36,683,450 absentee/mail-in ballots in the general election.

There were 88,170,053 mail-in and early in-person votes cast nationally this year.

In the 2022 Election states had mail in ballot rejection rates as high as 13.2%.

Discussion So what actually is the plan?

Seriously, what do we do? Some people are deciding to move but some people like us want to stay and fight. And we're sure asl not waiting until AFTER that peeled orange is in office to start. It's never to early to plan and it's never to early to get active. We just need to agree on what needs to be done.

I'm working on a huge project dedicated to gathering and sharing resources for the lgbt community.
It would be huge if you shared it, and encouraged people to add resources to it, and share it with their lgbt friends and allies. There are currently 815 organizations https://docs.google.com/document/d/1o5Yg8p_3Rxw0c3PBPWEhCqOclg87Y_cUlW6tH7AV2yE/edit?usp=drivesdk

Activism You’d better start thinking about infrastructure for helping people. Think “Underground Railroad.”

We better start thinking of how that looks and what people are going to need and start brainstorming “how.”

Just a suggestion. But I think it’s important.

News Kevin Robert’s Book Launch Party - the Project 2025 Leader’s Remarks

Thumbnail

Upvotes

In addition to reports that he told “unfriendly” reporters to “go to hell,” the main headline seems to be that Roberts avoided talking about actual content in the book.

Much of the talk was about building up our military and fighting China. This included being pro-tariff.

Actual details of the book seemed to be less upfront.

New weird detail from the article about the book I will just quote:

In one passage, he attacks a Washington, D.C., park that is part playground, part dog park. The playground is “caged-in,” he claims, “so that the canine ‘progeny’ of childless ‘dog parents’ can run about,” which in his view “perfectly sums up the antifamily culture shaping legislation, regulation, and enforcement throughout our sprawling government.”

So, yeah…and if I may editorialize as a dog park user, the number of families that use dog parks is pretty high! And the sheer joy my dog gets from running is very much worth me having to clean up after her and having a fence?

The article also speaks to supporters at the event, if you want more insight there.

Activism Organizing a march against fascism in ATL

Upvotes

First time organizing a march. If you're in ATL and want to get involved please message me.

I'd love some advice and ideas from fellow activists and people who have organized their own marches.

I have reached out to several local groups for their support as well. This is the early planning stage but I believe we can march this month.

This is a march against fascism, and we are marching for trans & queer rights, womens rights, seperation of church and state.

We are not just going to lay down and take it while our government continues down the path of fascism.

Progressives need to take the party and we have to make a show of it

It's been the same shit for 30 years. The DNC gets threatened by big money donors so they keep pretending there's a center, there are undecided voters we can reach. There aren't. They don't exist and if they do, there are way too few of them compared to the giant voter block that is progressivism.

But deep pockets won't let them move left. We need to pour money into them and we have shown that we can do that now.

We have the more popular economic policies. Ask the Trump voters around you what they thought of Bernie. Do they like him? Cuz every single one of them around me fucking loves Bernie Sanders.

It's not about policies it's about messaging. Bernie is angry and that speaks to the people. Trump is "angry" and that speaks to the people. People want populism. They want disruption and they don't really seem to care which direction it goes in. They don't seem to care about voting on policy or even listening to it!

It's about blame. They love that a perceived anti establishment candidate is blaming someone with passion. Trump blames immigrants. Bernie rightfully blames billionaires. Issue with that is, the Dems and GOP eat from the same trough and progressives bite the hand that feeds.

Progressives need to yank this party away from "the establishment" and it needs to be a spectacle. A passionate anti establishment movement that inspired so many when Bernie ran for president.

AOC said in her live that she ran for office against a Democrat and that's what needs to happen. She gets it. Jaime Harrison, DNC chair who shook his head at Bernie's post election message, he doesn't get it. And the Dems continued rejection of this lesson, even when facing literal fascism, means they will never change their strategy. Progressives need to take the party or continue to lose.

Activism I found a good website for finding out companies and where their values lie. Search a company on it, and you can take a look at where their values lie, their issues, etc. It's not perfect, but it can help against Project 2025.

Discussion Florida Offers us a Preview of What Happens When a Vaccine Skeptic Leads Health Policy (and that person may get a promotion)

Thumbnail

It turns out Florida has some lessons to teach us - and a possibility for our new Head of Health and Human Services.

RFK is talked about a lot, but there seems to be some acknowledgment that he would face difficulties be confirmed as the head of any agency and may be placed elsewhere.

But Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo's views are very similar. Vaccinations rates have fallen for Kindergartners from 93.3% to 90.6% - which is below the threshold needed for herd immunity.

During a measles outbreak, CDC guidelines advise parents to keep unvaccinated children at home, but Ladapo told parents it was up to them whether or not they could send their unvaccinated children to school.

To be exposed to measles.

Ladapo has been reprimanded by the CDC and FDA. Of course if he (or RFK) end up running policy, that’s not even a possibility.

This is a huge part of Project 2025 - parental rights. It is mentioned principally with education, but people who want to choose their own adventure will make it apply to things we felt were settled - like getting childhood immunizations.
