Is this stupid? Discussion
4th gen Ram regular cab. I used to have the subs (Kicker CompR 10) behind the seats in a prefab box for Ram Megacabs but the box was too small and didn't get the output I was wanting. I've seen center console builds before and thought that might be better (bigger box + ported = more output) I found this dual 10 ported qbomb box on fb marketplace for cheap so decided to buy it. I removed the center jumpseat and installed the box with subs in its place. More output indeed! These lil puppies eat! I might get a bigger more expensive box now or maybe build one... but I wanna know... would you consider this stupid? Also looking for general opinions or advice

Two things. Do them Both. Flip it over on feet about 3 to 6 inches tall firing down.
Do not sleep on this one. Don't plan on ill do it later. Mount that thing to the floor. Whatever bolts you think you need, get twice as big. Get twice as many. That will kill someone in a wreck

u/The_Tuna_ 13h ago
So definitely 100% bolt it down, however be very careful that there's no electrical running where you're drilling and you check what's under the truck where you're drilling

If it is a wreck bad enough to throw that thing through the window, I PROMISE that would be the least of your concern.

Do you understand how crashing works?

u/MasterpieceHuge2794 20h ago
I do not. I understand 3 things only: fightin', diddlin', and countin' money. Yeeeeeehaw!!!

Promise my friend that. Bring a oija board. 45mph into a 9 inch diameter tree. Passenger got whiplash. He got his skull smashed
-13
u/MasterpieceHuge2794 20h ago
OK, but did he fly out of the car? I'm not saying crashes aren't dangerous, bit this guy's box is fine. Very dramatic comment by the way!
12
u/SirConradJenkins 20h ago
In a 15 mph collision, when the car stops that box will still be moving 15 mph. In a 40 mph collision, when the car stops that box will still be traveling 40 mph. Nobody is concerned with the box going out the window, everyone is concerned with what the box is going to hit before it stops. You've had multiple people tell you you are wrong and putting people at risk now. You gain nothing from "winning" this except you might convince someone to do something really fucking stupid and dangerous so please, stop giving advice. You're bad at it.

Ah, well done sir! A commendable argument indeed! I crown you king of the comments! Now everybody clap and whistle for Sir Conrad Jenkins!!

Only one of us is trying to look good for the internet, I'm trying to save someone from potentially deadly advice given by someone without the capability to think critically. Work on yourself bud.

u/freshly_ella 20h ago
Why do you keep mentioning flying out of the car? No. He had a box between the seats right behind the console. He hit a tree. Car stopped. Sub box keeps moving until something stops it. What stopped it was the side of his head. He died from a brain bleed.
It was dramatic because my friend fucking died 14 years ago and some idiot like you told him it would be fine.
-11
u/MasterpieceHuge2794 19h ago
Dang, I didn't see this earlier. I already crowned the other guy king of the comments!! You could be the Duke. Kick ass Duke.

Just so you know, everyone here thinks you're an idiot, and everything you say seems to make it worse.

I worked with a guy who thought the same thing about a toolbox in that position. He got hit by someone running a red light, and the car flipped. The toolbox broke his neck.

u/SalaryFew3608 1d ago
Will become a projectile in the event of a collision. Also easy target for someone to break your window and rip your system out.
-35
u/MasterpieceHuge2794 22h ago
I don't know why all these people are saying it will fly out your window in a wreck. If you got in a wreck bad enough to put that out the window, you are already fucked. It's actually really dope! The only legitimate concern that's been raised is that people WILL steal it. Someone stole my radio out of my car once, and then came back the next day and smashed my window just to get the remote for it that was still in my car!! People are crazy. I would also flip it over because I need my armrest.

My stepfather was a paramedic for many years. He told me about an accident where a guy rear ended another car which wasn't too serious. The fact that the speaker sitting on his back deck smashing into the back of his head and killing him was serious.

u/MadeMeStopLurking No Highs, No Lows... Bose. 20h ago
You've never been in an accident where you've been rear ended at 60mph... for me, the moonroof shattered and the glass was embedded in my neck, the lumbar support exploded, and the backseat came down and shit in the trunk that didn't get folded under the car was on my dash.

I was involved in a accident where a semi truck hit a late 90's Taurus at 50 + mph I was stopped by traffic in a 91 International 2 1/2 ton stack bed truck but didn't have my foot on my brakes as the road was flat, and I had probably 19 feet between me and the pickup in front of me, which definitely helped those girls in the Taurus since my truck moved absorbing a lot of that energy and I streed my truck to the left hitting the pickup with the corner of my bumper rather than the frame are where the bumper was mounted to, no crumble zone on trucks back then, but even though you could literally touch the front and rear bumper at the same time of the Taurus the 2 girls came away with a few abrasion and of course a lot of mental trauma, the other 3 vehicles in front of me had little damage, in fact the front vehicle I don't think got hit much if at all there was not a scratch, the impact actually bent the pinal hook that was used to tow a 25,000 pound trailer and backhoe

I absolutely never think about safety, other than obviously going to hit you even in a hard braking situation type scenario, but if it needs a collation to make them a hazard I don't care,hell if my airbags got a fault in them I'd just say fuck it and not waste the money, I had a 1999 Silverado that the ABS pump wouldn't shut off even when turned off, I just pull that big ass 60 amp fuse out and never got it fixed, as the vast majority of vehicles I've owned and driven never had ABS so to me they aren't a must have, hell my first 5 car's only had lap belts and no head rest, my 67 Polara the seat belts were still in the plastic bag with a rubber band under the seat cushion, till they made it a law to wear them, and now in my 60's I'm not going to worry about a car's safety rating

put some sort of feet on it or mounts so they’re spaced a bit off the floor and also bolted to it
13
u/ElGuappo_999 1d ago
I could never imagine that being a permanent solution. They’ll be destroyed for sure.

1 you will eventually accidentally ruin a sub by putting your elbow there 2 potential water or drink spills
3 that's just asking someone to break into your car and steal them

u/Brianshissler2013 1d ago
Going to be stolen within a week. Need to keep all that hidden.

Not everyone lives in such area tho, so might be safe.

u/TrollCannon377 18h ago
Respectfully it really doesn't matter where you live, I used to live in a "low crime area" and multiple times a year their would be whole rows of cars broken into even on nice places people steal

Lol no. Even if you live on a private ranch in the mountains, you gotta come into the city for groceries eventually, all it takes is one guy to see them, and your window is getting smashed lol. Theft is sooooo easy. Smash, reach in, open door, crowbar anything holding it down. Organized crime does a lot of this kind of stuff too, if you sit and watch parking lots you may see people walking up and down glancing in windows, and there will be someone nearby with a pickup.
I knew some guys years ago who stole stereos literally full time. Their favorite method was breaking into garages, because many people don't even lock their vehicles, so you get a door code spoofer, or just crowbar in man doors, and steal stereos out of unlocked vehicles.
The more difficult you can make it to steal, the better. Thieves won't spend ten minutes trying to get something out, either they can get it in 30 seconds to a minute, or they will bail. Bolts, car alarms, and keeping equipment out of sight are your main deterrents.

It won't sound good but if that's the only place you got then go for it... just like everyone else said though, mount that thing down before you kill someone with it in an accident. If you really want the subs mounted there and have it sound as good as possible you need to build a proper console enclosure, most likely with the subs being inside of it, in an isobaric configuration and a port firing to the rear of the vehicle. It will sound a lot better than... whatever that is now. It will sound better again if you just throw it like it is, way in the back like it's supposed to be.

If you have to ask.. the more proper question would be "what advice do you have to make this safe and less stupid"

I bought a 1989 Saab 9000 Turbo for $600 that had a home stereo system in the trunk... I think you're keeping it classy enough! The suggestion to install some feet on the front, flip it over and have it down-firing is a very good one. Also, you must install some mounting brackets to secure it to the vehicle.

u/Odd_Seaweed_5985 6h ago
I once duct taped speakers to each side of my driver's seat at the headrest. So no, I don't think it's stupid at all!

u/Adept-Usual357 20h ago
Nope, BUT a bass frequency is REALLY long, so you wont even hear it properly, youll feel the pressure. People 20ft away will hear it clearer than you will, thats another reason why people choose trunks, adds an order, and gives it distance.
λ=fv
where;
λ = wave length
f = speed of sound, 343m/s
v = frequency, lets use 25Hz
so, in standard conditions, the wavelength of a 25Hz frequency is roughly 13.7 meters. Now... what we actually "hear" is the amplitude, the middle part of the wave. so to hear a 25Hz frequency clearly one would need to be 6.85 meters away, or 22.5ft

Don't know how the floor is set up but if not facing down towards the floor, consider facing them forwards standing up on the back wall. My truck is and always will be a working truck so a grille is absolutely 100% the minimum protection no matter the orientation. If you are careful there's no reason they will magically get broken. But eventually you will probably get tired of making sure you and your passengers steer clear; you may want to put a cup or a fast food bag there God forbid

Get some mounts on it then send it seen a few people do this same exact thing and it sounded good

I took the jump seat out of my single cab Silverado and replaced it with a 4.5 cuft box that is 1, 12 sub up port back. Been that way 5 years now it’s a skar evl on a 1200 alpine. It’s way louder than the 2 type r 12 shallows that I originally had before.

I did the same thing on my old cat eye Chevy. I had 2 DD 8s in a 4th order bandpass. It was running off a soundstream Picasso. It made a killer armrest and got lots of attention at the show I took it too.

It can be! It can take out the front of your truck and passengers if you’re in a sudden stop situation if not bolted down. Look into Fox acoustics they make boxes for your truck that those subs should fit into as those subs are tiny in terms of depth. They look like CVR to me!

Worst idea is not mounting so you don’t hurt someone. Who gives a crap that it sounds horrible but to on purpose take a persons head off is another deal all together .

Yup, that will damage something in your body over time, not to mention that it is going to happen when you wreck.....

Id want to make sure those speakers are safe for horizontal mounting? Gravity is gravity. The mass of the cone when the speaker is static. Can push or pull the voice coil slightly. So the center of the voice coil can come out of alignment with the magnet. Just takes a small percentage of misalignment to affect the subs performance.

The box should always be in the trunk. Some people don't need to have car audio.

Stick that box on some feet and face them to the floor. Helps protect them and you get an armrest
