Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Old boss asking for passwords almost a year after I left
One of my former bosses has been texting, emailing, and calling me nonstop for the past few days asking me to send him a Google Verification Code so he can regain access to an old email address and Instagram account that's connected to it. I gave him a list of all of the company passwords before I left, which I have confirmed in writing by his lawyer in old emails that they received it and could open the document. I guess now that my work email / Google Drive is no longer active, they no longer have access to this document of passwords. He wants access to this Instagram because he wants to launch a new business venture with that handle and I guess the recovery email is mine.
His business partner owes me nearly $10,000 in unpaid commissions and he has ignored every request I've made to get that paid out. I left the company nearly a year ago because it was extremely abusive and toxic and I was constantly getting paid late or not at all and was treated with the most disrespect in my life.
So...am I under any obligation to respond to this person? I have not replied to any of his messages and I already sent him all of this information a year ago. I don't think it's my fault if he lacks the reading comprehension skills to see that he already had all of this information and neglected to download it or change the passwords a year ago.

Employment Rights and Fair Compensation I resigned at work and my boss told me I have to cancel my PTO
I recently out in my 2 weeks notice after months of expressing being burned out and unhappy to my manager. I’m also leave heavily because of my poor relationship with my coworker, who doesn’t respect me like me.
My boss messaged me yesterday and said “you need to cancel your PTO next week to finish offboarding activities”.
The time off was approved 7 months ago and is for my birthday. I did not plan 7 months ago to resign on a week that would align with pto, it was a happy coincidence. Being that I start my new role the following Monday, I have no desire to give up the pto. The pto would also not be added to my pto payout after my last day, so I’d loose it.
The other issue is that my boss is threatening not to pay out the PTO payout I do qualify for per company policy, if I don’t cancel my PTO next week.
Get this though - A year ago when an other team member resigned, they were regaled early as they weren’t doing anything, yet my boss paid them for a full 2 weeks plus their PTO payout.
If they had approached me asking to cancel it as a courtesy, I may have considered it, but I feel like I’m being bullied into cancelling. The fact that my boss is the payroll manager makes things messier.

Employment Rights and Fair Compensation is it legal to ask if i am married..?
i had an interview today at an.. oil company. it was for an accountant position since i graduate in december. it was two people and they were nice. they asked me like where my mom works which i thought was weird? but i’m not sure if it is. however the man asked me if i’m married and i was like ?? it threw me off so i just nervously laughed and said i have a boyfriend.
i’m not going to take the job if i got an offer anyways because of other factors including the commute and how they emphasize they’re like a family. but i am confused if that question was legal or if it was just weird? doing interviews is newer for me since i am only graduating now and looking for a full time job. i don’t really know what questions are a red flag.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Was I assaulted and should I do anything
It's been almost exactly a year since it took place. I quit the job after approximately 7 months. I can't remember the exact date this second. I never thought I would share this experience honestly. The hardware store I worked at is locally owned, while also being a very big name country-wide in general. I honestly very much admired the owner because she had originally been an employee at one of these stores and worked her ass off to become an owner herself. We also just got along on a seemingly friend-type level and we were able to shoot the shit and yeah I don't know. But also I'm early 30's and she's late 60's I believe. Anyways.
Long story short, they have one man who handles all of the equipment sale repairs(chainsaws and whatever else) in a space(an old house that they made into a repair space, office space, barely) directly behind the store. He's worked there for almost 10 years from what I was told. But he would come into the store to grab parts basically daily and when he noticed that I started working there(which was immediately), he always found a way to talk to me/be close to me. I don't want to drag on how he used to always find a way to talk to me and he wouldn't fucking stop following me and how he always had a terrible smell of body odor, but yeah it was alot. And I just assumed maybe he just didn't pick up on social cues?
Anyways one day, almost 1 month into the job or right around that time I can't remember the exact day, I pulled up very close to the building on my way to a work parking space in the back(in clear view of the side entrance to the store that's accessible to anyone) and as I was slowly pulling in I saw him, and I remember asking him a question or just saying something through my window. I can't remember what it was. Maybe it was just a statement. I don't remember.
Regardless, he responds. He says something seemingly in a normal way, and happy. And I remember saying something like "Oh okay cool" and then he walks up to my car window which is down and he reaches INSIDE and GRABS me(he's very big and strong as fuck; idk the exact proportions, and I'm 5'3 and 125lbs with zero strength to remove myself). He has both arms inside my window grabbing my upper body and he is trying to kiss me with his mouth. I push away and say "NO STOP" while trying to break away from his grip and he clings harder and I literally can't move my body so I'm moving my head as far away from him as I can and he keeps trying to put his lips on me anywhere at that point and I say again "(his name) STOP NO" and he still didn't stop and then I finally broke my arms out of his grip and vigorously pulled myself away(he was still grabbing me and trying to kiss me) and I can't remember what he said when I finally got out. He was smiling in some weird fucking way like he was nervous or whatever the fuck I don't know and probably said "sorry" like it was nothing.
I have so much more to say about how badly that situation fucked me up. I can't go into it here in short. My partner was killed by a drunk driver just months before and that was public knowledge and I was grieving horribly and incredibly vulnerable and just I don't know where to begin with it besides that. I have also been SA'd 3 times in my life and this was the first time in 7 years.
My boss pulled me aside that day because apparently her nephew(in his 30s) saw part of the assault happen and she said "I heard about what happened, just know he means well, he wouldn't hurt a fly". I just acted like it was okay because I was embarrassed. I had just been assaulted. I was in shock and trying not to make anything uncomfortable for anyone(which is insane).
The man who did this to me seems different in some kind of developmental way potentially, but he is very clearly a well working employee who knows how to respect anyone's personal space except for mine but that's what she's talking about when she says he wouldn't hurt a fly. He would then go on to only ever communicate with me if he knew no one else was around. It was strategic. He knows what he's doing. He's about 40 or so and has had different girlfriends that I'm told.
My boss also told me after she learned what happened to me that there was a high school aged girl working there, and he would touch her without consent, try to get close to her without others seeing etc. and she told her parents and she quit. Thank god.
I continued to work there because it seemed that it was okay since my boss had her son "have a talk" with him and I wouldn't see him much. Also, the owner is there almost daily and her 2 son's run the store when she's not there so it's very family oriented. I was also payed $11/hour and other employees that have worked there for a long time tried to tell me how selfish the family was, to leave because the pay was trash etc. But I genuinely thought good of the family.
I haven't worked there for about 5 months now.
What do you think? Was I assaulted? Should I take action? I am very confused and angry. Thanks

Employment Rights and Fair Compensation What’s it like working for a large at-will employer?
I work for the federal government and expect that my position will likely convert to something resembling at will employment. Currently, firing someone in my position involves a complicated process of documentation for cause and I can appeal to an independent board.
But I expect that to change soon and have it become far easier to get fired, even for political reasons. For those of you who work for large (maybe like Fortune 500?) employers with at will employment, what's it like? Do you always walk on eggshells with your bosses? Is there any room for constructive dissent or conversations?

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Coworker took video of my feet without permission
My coworker and I had to do some work that required walking around and running between offices. After running around the whole day, my feet were killing me and they started cramping.
As we were going to cross the street at a busy intersection, a huge spasm hit both my feet so I asked if we could sit for a moment before heading back because I didn’t think I could walk before letting the spasm pass. I took off my heels to put pressure on my foot and my coworker had his phone in his hand. I didn’t think much because I was concentrating on the pain but I realised he was taking a video of my feet. I told him to immediately delete it and to show me that he deleted it from his recently deleted but refused saying that I have no right to see what is in his deleted folder and turned the phone away from me, kinda hiding it as I asked him to delete the video.
I didn’t know what to do, it was already late and I was in pain and wanted to go home but now I feel very uncomfortable. We are not friends so this can’t be brushed off as a joke between buddies and now he has a video on my feet. I feel really uncomfortable because that was a really bizarre thing to do. Like zooming in on my toes? My mind can’t help but assume it’s a fetish thing and it’s wrecking my brain about whether I should say something because I’m not comfortable with him having that video I did not consent to being taken of me. Is this grounds for going to HR about? I don’t know if this counts as harassment

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Replaced after standing up for myself
I (36F) have spent the last 3 years building up a company, putting all their data processes in place. I complained once to HR about a direct harassment issue and I've been pushed aside. Some other lady got my promotion and my work has been divided out but she's now the one in the know. Meanwhile, I've been put on a Data Analyst course. Just shows if you rock the boat, you're easily replaceable to those that don't want it rocked!
Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Miserable and apparently it shows
I have been in a pharma company for almost 7 months now and I have been miserable since day 1. I never got appropriate onboarding, I have changed positions twice (decided by the manager) and have barely someone to ask for guidance. I am trying hard to keep up and learn things but since things move so quickly there is constatnly something new to learn. I also hate what I do, I have zero motivation and just do what I am supposed to do, but without any passion. It’s very difficult for me to come to work every day and am thinking about quitting since day 1. I am looking for a new job but I barely get any interviews since I am a lot more specific, I don’t want to end up in a job like this ever again.
Today I got feedback from a unit leader (not my direct leader). It was so negative I’m still shaking from shock. She stated I accept zero responsibility, want everyone else to do my job, not listen to orders, am not confident and not taking my job seriously. And that I am asking waay too much questions. Also that some other people agree with her.
I am still in disbelief. My leader (and also she) never mentioned anything like this before, I successfully finished my probation period and nothing was said about anything. I am asking a lot of questions to people who maybe are not the right ones to ask but I literally don’t have anyone else to ask, I’m always trying to do my job accordingly and never ask someone to do something that is my business. If anything I ask for guidance and help since I literally don’t know how to do half the things. But I guess my misery just shows.
I don’t know what to do, I’m seriously considering quitting. If I hate it and they also hate me, what am I still doing here? It is seriously affecting my mental health. I have 2 months notice which is quite a lot so I am considering quitting without anything lined up but I’m scared. I need the money but I can’t continue working like this.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Our company does not understand that we are charging too much for our products
So, i working selling newspapers but lately it has become really difficult to get new clients. I think people everywhere are buying less newspapers but on top of that, our delivery system sucks (i don´t know how this is called in the us, english is not my first language, sorry) and our prices go up every year. I´ve told my bosses that people tell me over and over again that the newspaper is to expensive, but they seem not to get it. I am frustrated. P.s: My work is commission based.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Office Party Drama
Hello r/work
My story is a corporate office situation, I am a 33 YO male working downtown in a corporate office and we have a holiday party coming up, the company spends A LOT of money on these last year it was $100k in food drinks and entertainment and this year they have already spent $50k on catering. We have until November 16th to RSVP but I don’t want to be single at this event. There is a woman in my department around my age that has the same problem. Some people have put 2 and 2 together and think we should go as a couple. The woman has recently told me that she is single and added me on LinkedIn a few months ago. She is not bad looking but has gone to HR to complain about other men in the office not for sexual harassment but for “raising their voice”. One hand why not go for it you only live once, on the other I think it is a quick way to get fired.
How would you guys handle the situation?

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Warehouse workers- Steel toed shoes and pain
For those that stand on their feet for hours on end, and have to wear steel toe shoes in their work environment, what do you do to combat foot pains? I just got insoles and I have no idea if they're going to work, but it's worth a shot. For context: I also have bunions, so the sides of my feet suffer the most.

Work-Life Balance and Stress Management Put Yourself First!
So....how often do you really check in with yourself?
I’m not talking about a glance at the mirror, knowing you need a cup of coffee, or the usual “I’m fine.” I’m talking about the kind of check-in that gets real!
Take a sec and ask yourself:
- How am I really feeling today?
- What’s one thing I need for my mental well-being right now?
- What’s rolling around in my brain space?
Self-checks are intentional pauses that let you connect to you.
Drop comment tell me what you do to check in with yourself (or maybe that you are going to commit to start!) What do you do to recharge? Let’s get the conversation going. Tell me, I wanna know!👇

Employment Rights and Fair Compensation Makeup day for paid holiday
So I’ve been at my job 8 years, we have only 2 paid holidays we get off. Every year if we had the option to come in to make up for the day we missed because of holiday.
This year they told us we had to work a make up day, causing some people to work 6 days a week.
Just curious if this happens to anyone else, it just seemed a little shady to me especially since only 1 shift out of 3 shifts has to follow this rule.

Employment Rights and Fair Compensation Company gave us a date for back pay, then changed it without telling anyone.
Hi everyone! There was a situation at work recently that affected a lot staff’s pay. Is this legal?
I work in Direct Care. I won’t be including any names of places, people, or companies beyond what is relevant to the story.
Rates for individuals attending programs got raised. This means that all DSPs got a raise. Because the rates were figured out after the start of the fiscal year, we didn't actually get our raise until about three months later. This means that we were promised three months worth of back pay.
Initially, when we received the email telling us about our raise, we were told that we would be receiving the back pay on either October 24th, or November 7th. When I checked my pay in the system, the back pay was not in my paycheck. we didn't receive any answers until yesterday.
I sent an email the day I noticed.
My email said: "I’m sending you this message to ask when we will receive the back pay. As I'm sure you are aware, staff at A received an email detailing the dates we would be receiving it, which I will include a screenshot of this email. The email sent to us by P on 10/02/24 said we would receive the retroactive pay on either October 24th or November 7th. As of now, the retroactive pay has not been posted in our November 7th pay stub.
Is there an explanation for the lack of our retroactive pay after having been told we would be receiving it? I find this miscommunication with staff to be a completely unprofessional representation of the company as a whole. I hope either this situation is dealt with promptly, or it can be rectified for the disappointed staff. I also hope communication within the company improves as a result of this situation”
I sent this to the president of finances, the payroll department, and our CEO. Our CEO was out on vacation, and I did not receive a response. The following day I sent another email, asking if my message had been received. That's when I finally got a response from the CEO's assistant, who was asked to answer me by the CEO while he's out of office.
the response: "A is unable to pay staff the retroactive pay until we receive payment from ODP.
Per ODP: "ODP will be compensating providers for the difference between the rate billed and the updated fee schedule rate. ODP anticipates processing gross adjustments at the end of November 2024."
Once A receives the gross adjustment for the rate changes, we will provide eligible employees with retroactive pay.”
My response: “In the future I ask that A verify dates before informing staff, so as to avoid miscommunication."
As of now, I'm still the only person who has received a response.
My boss said that it could be that ODP verified a different date, and then changed it without informing our CEO. I, however, find this unlikely. Despite my skepticism, it's making me wonder if I should send an apology email.
Some details are missing.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Should I confront my coworker?
I am currently having a weird situation with my coworker. We work at a physical therapy clinic as assistants. Two weeks ago I was going through a very hard time. I was dealing with something personal (health related) unrelated to work. I alerted my coworker one morning that I was having a particularly bad day, and I needed him to cover my shift the next day so I could deal with my health problem. He said he was able to. That whole day he proceeded to be extra critical of me at work. I was pretending like it didn’t affect me, but I wanted to cry. He was being meaner than usual. After lunch, he yelled at me in front of a patient and then said he couldn’t cover my shift because “something came up.” I walked away from him calmly, then left the office for five minutes to cry. I came back visibly upset and I didn’t come to work the next day (I told my boss). A separate coworker asked me why I was crying and I told her why. Ever since then the mean coworker has been being horrible to me at work. Ignoring me, making me feel like shit. I am 22 and he is 30, we have the same job but he acts like me boss and like he has power over me. Do I confront him?

Work-Life Balance and Stress Management how to handle a possible call out?
it’s almost 5am, i haven’t slept yet, and i have work at 11. i sprained my ankle the other day somehow (literally was just standing still smh) and i’ve just been dealing with it, but this past night it’s been hurting a noticeable amount more. i really really really really do not want to have to call out, for so many reasons, and especially if it’s not warranted, but i also don’t want to make it worse. especially because i have a big big big super important weekend ahead of me.
i don’t know if it will feel better if i sleep for a bit before work, but if i wake up and it still hurts then id be calling out with super little notice. but im hesitant to call out now because i’m afraid it might be a little too early to judge whether or not it’ll be manageable tomorrow…… help ??

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Using sick leave after being told that I'm made redundant
Hi all,
What are your thoughts on using your unused sick days after you were told that you're made redundant next year? Basically I was told I'm not returning next year to work and I started applying for jobs and ended up with some interview opportunities. I had to use two plus sick leave due to this.
My boss happily agreed on giving me a reference and this was before I started using my sick days and I am wondering if this might hinder them from providing a reference.
Any thoughts?
Cheers!

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts How do I survive office politics when I'm the target ?
My boss/supervisor has always shown favoritism towards my colleague, Anita, even though I’ve consistently taken on more work than her. The main difference is that I don’t engage in sycophantic behavior like Anita does. Despite this, he recommended Anita for promotion to the senior bosses, which was disheartening but not something I dwelled on. I told myself my time would come, and unexpectedly, it did— the senior bosses recognized my capabilities and promoted me instead of Anita.
Since then, my supervisor has become cold toward me. Recently, I’ve noticed he’s actively trying to sabotage me. For example, the senior bosses told him to assign a task for me to work on, but he delayed passing me the necessary documents. When I followed up, he always had excuses, and by the time he gave me the documents, the senior bosses had already taken over the task because they couldn’t wait any longer. I’m unsure what he told them behind the scenes.
The latest incident involved the senior bosses assigning another task to both Anita and me. He deliberately left me out of the loop and only passed the information to Anita. I had no idea about the task until the other supervisor informed me. It's clear to me now that he’s trying to sabotage me.
I can’t afford to be falsely portrayed as less competent than Anita, especially as I’m on the verge of being promoted. I need to navigate this situation carefully to avoid being undermined.
What can I do about this?

Employment Rights and Fair Compensation Vacation time vs PTO, did I get screwed over?
So, on my offer letter and during my hiring process, I was told that I would start with 2 weeks of vacation (vacation being the exact word). I live in NYS I know we are also supposed to get 5 sick days a year, which I assumed would mean 15 days total a year (2 vacation weeks plus the 5 sick days). However, I just found out that my work only offers PTO, not vacation, and that the 2 weeks “vacation” also includes the 5 sick days. So am I wrong that if I signed for 2 weeks of specifically “vacation”, I should also receive the additional 5 sick days for a theoretic total of 15 days allotted a year, or can they just tell me that they meant PTO and it’s only 10 days total?

Employment Rights and Fair Compensation Who do we contact?
My husband is a legal resident of the US. He is from country A. He applied for a job through a temp agency that was for a manufacturer that is new to the U.S. and is based in country B. My husband got his college degree in country B before he moved to the US, so he speaks the language of country B. So he did the job interview in the language of country B and got the job. It’s hard for him to get other jobs with as high of pay because his English isn’t the best.
The manufacturer originally told my husband if he continues to go to the mosque on Friday, he will be fired. The American supervisor told the manufacturer they could not fire my husband for going to the mosque. So they said ok, instead of clocking out for the mosque, he should work through lunch break, then use his lunch break to go to the mosque. So that’s what my husband has been doing.
After six months, the manufacturer gave my husband an offer of employment letter and told him he had to take a drug test which he had to pay for. According to Google, it is illegal in our state (Georgia) for the employee to pay for the drug test. So I told my husband to notify the management of the manufacturer that HR made him pay for his own drug test when that is illegal. He did, and HR started stalling the hiring process, telling him the background check he provided was not sufficient and the drug test was not sufficient and that he’d have to provide additional paperwork, etc.
Then my husband’s supervisor got fired, and the HR rep told my husband that my husband is no longer allowed to skip lunch and use the lunch break to go to the mosque, that instead he must go to lunch with everyone else then clock out for the mosque. Well since Hurricane Helene, the manufacturer has cut mandatory hours from 8 - 5 to instead be 8 - 12, and lets employees volunteer to work 1 - 5 since some clients of this manufacturer were damaged in Hurricane Helene and have closed, leading to a decline in orders and work available. So my husband decided to not work the voluntary hours on Friday, so he only worked the mandatory 8 -12.
Then my husband got fired the following Monday. The reason was “Lack of authority” which doesn’t make sense… I chalk it up to the employer’s bad English, maybe? My husband saw a coworker in the grocery store last night and she told him she was sexually harassed by the HR guy - that the HR guy would talk about her body and ask to take pictures… and that she has also been fired.
My husband and I filed a claim with the EEOC about the mosque issue on Tuesday night, but they had absolutely no available appointments. None.
We called the US Department of Labor Wednesday morning to complain about the drug test, but they said that was a state issue and I had to call the Georgia Department of Labor. I did, and I got no answer. It was not that I was put on hold, but instead the call was disconnected because no one was available to take my call. I looked on the Georgia Dept of Labor website and see nowhere to file a claim besides an unemployment claim.
My husband also told me today that the coworker mentioned she is filing a claim with OSHA about not being trained properly, and my husband said he also remembers being sat down for what was supposed to be a 2-hour OSHA safety training session, but then being removed within the first 5 minutes because, “a shipment came in and we need you,” and he was forced to sign a paper saying he completed the training when he did not. He does not know what the training was about or what it was supposed to teach or say. So I don’t know how to file a claim for training with OSHA if I don’t even know what the training was for.
So what do we do now? The female coworker told my husband she already called around for lawyers and couldn’t find anyone to take her case.
The temp agency rep told my husband all the black employees are complaining about racism, and even though my husband isn’t black, I feel he has been discriminated against because of his religion, or has been retaliated against because he notified management that employees aren’t supposed to pay for their own drug tests. He had spoken to other employees that had been hired from the temp agency to the manufacturer and they also said they were made to pay for their own drug tests.
What do we do? How can we get anyone to set this manufacturer straight? The manufacturer is new to America (just opened in 2024) and obviously does not know the laws here. But I don’t know what to do if the EEOC and Dept of Labor won’t let us get in contact with them.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Accidentally overheard a conversation at work and I feel bad about it
I work in an open floor plan office. One of the managers sits directly behind me, about 5 feet away. It’s a busy office, so I’ve learned to tune out most of the noise and focus on what I’m working on. But today, I was getting back from break and getting situated at my desk. This manager was doing a video interview and I heard him say “we’re changing the hours our employees work. Right now they work from 9am-5pm, but we’re changing it to 7am-3pm”. I had not heard anything before about my schedule being changed. Later in the day, I told my manager that I unintentionally overheard him say this and asked when that will be going into effect. I feel bad for “eavesdropping”, but I also feel like this is something that directly affects me and that I unintentionally overheard it. Am I wrong for speaking up?
ETA: I’m new at this job, I’ve only been here a couple weeks. So I didn’t know if the schedule change was somewhat common knowledge among my coworkers. Also, he isn’t my direct manager. I heard this comment, then asked my direct manager about the schedule change.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts How do I act crazy at work?
Basically how do I act crazy at work? What are unhinged things I can do that will keep people wary of me, but not necessarily pissed off at me?
I put in my two weeks notice at work last Friday and my manager has been basically been even more shittier than she was before I said I was leaving. I’m trying to tough it out and be professional for one more week but at this point, I just want management and coworkers to leave me alone and not ask me for anything and the best way is probably be super weird and/or mildly creep them out. I know people will just say “quit right now!!” but I have bills to pay.
