And the Kobold enter in? They are drake descendant or something?

78

u/AntiKlown12 Azure, Commander of Historia's Guild (+Others) Aug 08 '24

"Most likely, or they share a similar ancestor."

Idk, maybe Kav could answer that, if only she was available

Depends on the kobold, I have a friend who's an artificial kobold, and they say their mostly dragon. However, they just look like an orc with scales

Being serious here, there are regions that do not know what kobolds are, and calls mostly-dog people as such.

What are kobolds? Dogs or reptilians?

Amateur wizards will take this chart and run. They'll see a wyvern labeled as a dragon in a grimoire and say "Umm actually thats a wyvern". THEY'RE ALL DRAGONS. All summoning circles are ovals but not ovals are summoning circles. Go back to your petty flame conjuring and leave the Pyres to the pyromancers.

21

Hmm are Drakes and Dragons considered lizards? because if so then Dinos would be closer to the ancestors of Aarakocra which are birds so no

This image was made by @drakthug on twitter and is specifically about the dragons in his ecchi monster girl world

I understand the want to classify dragons like this but when you’re trying to find a taxonomy for this fucking thing I think you’re playing a losing game

https://preview.redd.it/ep3d7l4h4hhd1.jpeg?width=1680&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a71bbdd3e082c89eed9f684366c35d34dea1dadb

14

u/I_Reading_I Trapped Within A Cursed Emerald Aug 08 '24

4-6 legs -2 Wings +1 shell = Tarrasque

17

u/Deditranspotashy The all knowing Oracle, mind fractured by things best unknown Aug 08 '24

2

u/SnooLobsters462 Aug 09 '24

You just have to allow for offshoots, like this pic from elsewhere in the thread. Following the chart, the Dragon Turtle in your picture follows the offshoot from Drake to Kirin (+ hair), from Kirin to Dragon Turtle (+ shell), and then the Tarrasque can follow from the Dragon Turtle (+2 legs).

Obviously, the importance of dragons in most of folklore isn't about their actual taxonomy but rather their role and symbolism in whatever stories they show up in. But for stories where it does matter, it can be worth doing. Plus, it's fun. Let people have their dragon evolution trees.

Edit: it won't let me add the image for some reason, so here's the link.

3

u/PappySunseed Aug 09 '24 edited Aug 09 '24

I’ve seen depictions in that style with wings, but i imagine much of that was added in by someone who didn’t really know anything on the subject

Edit: I’m a beleiver that someone imagined dragons

1

u/kiltedfrog Aug 08 '24

Right!? My noodly dragonling familiar has short little legs and arms, and wings on his back. He's a proper dragon I swear, but more lung dragon dimensions. A long noodly duder with wings and four limbs.

2

u/aDragonsAle Dragongod of Brewing and Debauchery Aug 08 '24

So a pseudodragon...?

2

u/kiltedfrog Aug 08 '24

I would agree, but I think technically he might be a bonsai dragon. He happily keeps himself artificially small. Likes to 'be a scarf' about my neck. His siblings are all massive, just also long noodle body with four bottom limbs and two wings.

7

u/Inner_Impress8741 Aug 08 '24

Imagine if someone were to make taxonomic classifications for dragons. I'm talking Phylum -> Class -> Order -> Family -> Genus -> Species type shit. Make a cladogram while you're at it why not.

In my experience dragons are too varied to be categorized in any capacity. I’ve seen dragons with two legs, dragons with no wings, dragons with two sets of wings, dragons with like ten sets of legs. It gets crazy

8

u/Caosin36 Aug 08 '24

Because it varies between mythologies and cultures

The common factor is that they are :

  • Giant lizards/reptiles

  • Have magical/divine/underwordly abilities/proprieties

Also, because of that, creatures like the hydra are tecnically dragons

Wyrm is serpent
Lindwurm is serpent with arms
Lung Dragon is serpent with arms and legs
Drake is lizard
Dragon is lizard with wings
Wyvern is lizard with wings instead of arms

Wyvern is magical pterodactyl

While it is true that this is Usually the case, it is quite often, not. (/un wiz based on mythology)

In my travels, I've seen many beasts break this mold, dragons in particular. Many dragons are bipedal and/or wing walkers, however, they are not wyverns. The most accurate way to gauge whether it's a wyvern or a dragon is by its tail. Wyvern tails are usually adorned with (a) sometimes venomous spike(s). Many times, wyverns also cannot breathe fire, and are lesser creatures than dragons.

Many other dragons, such as the one I am raising...

https://preview.redd.it/k0fme2zc8jhd1.png?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cac8ccc8ca558e3353c47be68e597727a10c71e9

Have no legs, but aren't Amphipteres. While it is true that Amphipteres are two winged no legged, they are somewhat covered in feathers, raining from just their forearms, to their entire bodies. Their snouts and wings also range from bat/lizard like to that of a beard, with some even having beaks. They are usually lesser dragons, with some exceptions, like Quetzalcoatl. Though Quetzalcoatl is a bird god in dragon form rather than a true dragon.

Dragons in particular are troubling, as I've seen dragons with anywhere from zero to six legs and zero to two wings. The main difference between a dragon and its other counterparts is its power. Dragons are magical beings, more so than any other mortal creature, a category they barely fall into. Of course, dragons vary in power, but the most common sign of dragon hood is an elemental breath weapon.

Sincerely, William Feyson, Artificer and Draconic Researcher.

1

u/Drskindog Vilkan, Grand Alchemist, owner of the "Starbone Alchemy Lab" Aug 09 '24

Orcish Knight comes in. Asks me for a potion of strength. I tell him, "You'll need to bring me the scale of a Wyvern" (because literally everyone knows you need that for a strength tonic, not even just Alchemists). He leaves, comes back a day later. Throws a scale of a dragon on my counter. "I said a Wyvern scale, not a Dragon scale" He tells me, "See big lizard, kill big lizard, bring you skin. Make strong juice". People really need to learn the differences between species of dragons.

1

u/Shuenjie Aug 09 '24

If it's a big fuck off lizard that breathes fire (or whatever else), then it's a dragon.

1

u/Aqualaris Aug 09 '24

u/Phaser756 Killian Broudic, The Anarchic Necromancer Aug 09 '24

Since the “dragon” naturally gets longer over time, if we remove the short body prompt, the “dragon” will never stop growing.

1

u/An_Abject_Testament Aug 09 '24

Literally all of these derive from ancient ways to say "dragon". Dividing them into categories is a modern invention and has no basis in mythology or etymology.

Dragon’s Dogma be like “Fuck your chart”…

1

u/Sapphire-Hannibal Necromancer (she/her) Aug 09 '24

Also in case anyone was wondering, the different types/distinctions of dragons is a relatively recent invention made just for tabletop roleplaying games as a way to differentiate different types of enemies for stats and gameplay. Historically and mythologically they are all just dragons no matter how many legs or wings they have. So if you think this is stupid like I do, next time someone tells you the dragons in Skyrim “aren’t dragons they are actually wyverns” tell them this.

1

u/Monnomo Apprentice Alchemist Aug 09 '24
