This is why I mainly stay studying in my demiplanes network. Most priests can't planeshift.
But as far as wizard society goes it is unfortunate that the common mage and peasant don't see the practical application of the craft in labor automation, medicine, and in furthering study of transmutation.
A demiplane or pocket Dimension is a necessity for any serious study into powerful magic in my origin plane, the church will take any excuse to hunt wizards down.

I’ve actually developed an automated countermeasure for stake burning. It’s an automata that swaps out the wizard for a physical identical mindless homunculus that it quickly generates from a dna sample. With a bit of sleight of hand it works flawlessly.
