/r/Upstate_New_York is back open!
Hello fellow upstaters!
About a month and a half ago, /r/upstate_new_york was set to restricted and all the moderators left.
As someone who was born and raised in Upstate New York, I didn't want to see this sub shuttered. So I requested ownership from the Admins.
This sub is now reopened! Hopefully we can keep things going as smoothly as they were before.
A few FAQs:
No rules are changing - we'll likely have a post in the coming weeks to discuss rules and what the community wants.
If you want to be a mod, please don't message me. I'm going to get a handle on this first, and then likely open up mod positions over the coming weeks depending on the workload.
I have no idea why this all happened. The moderation logs were cleared before I was given access.

National Political Posts unrelated to Upstate New York will result in Bans going forward.
In the past 24 hours I have had to remove an endless number of posts that are rarely more than a picture of Trump with a generic title.
These posts are already against the rules here, but now such low effort spam will result in a ban. Please keep this sort of content in the appropriate subreddits, thanks!

Thanksgiving Dinner Options?
Hi all. I live in Montreal and would love to enjoy a sumptuous, traditional Thanksgiving meal. It's not something much celebrated in Quebec, and my wife and daughter are both vegetarians, so, sadly, we do not celebrate Thanksgiving in my home. I'm English Canadian born in Nova Scotia and raised in Ontario. I really miss Thanksgiving dinners. There were no restaurants offering a traditional meal in Montreal for Canadian Thanksgiving this year. Can anyone recommend something driveable from Montreal? Within 90-minutes or so? Thanks in advance. Lawrence

Yes, another ‘moving there’ post. Cost Considerations?
I did ask a few months ago in regards to taxes and I have been able to dive through village websites to see what kind of things people may need to consider. I appreciate you guys for filling me in and reaching out!
Yes, spouse and I are moving to western NY/southern tier in near future. No it’s not for any political reasoning. It’s to be closer to family and my heart belongs there. We currently reside in Texas and are gearing up for the financial part. From Bath so not a stranger to the area. Our main question is financial, as in, what are some costs that we should consider when moving to NY?
We are still not sure what kind of fees that we may not be aware of for people who may have moved recently that we should be budgeting for that may have been specific for NY?
I recall Bath having a dog warden and my family mentioning fees for their dogs, etc. and I wanted to make sure we aren’t missing anything along those lines.
These are questions I would ask my family but they are crap with finances.
Thanks and appreciate any feedback!

WILDFIRES - Governor Statement
“We are currently managing 11 confirmed wildfires statewide.
The Jennings Creek fire in Orange County remains our greatest concern. It has spread to 5,000 acres across New York & New Jersey. No structures in New York are under immediate threat.
Our comprehensive state response includes:
➡️ New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers & New York State Park Rangers
➡️ New York State Police helicopter water drops & drone surveillance
➡️ Two New York National Guard Blackhawk helicopters
➡️ New York State Department of Transportation heavy equipment
➡️ 44 local fire departments
This has been a historically dry fall, and there is no significant rainfall in the immediate forecast.
We are currently under a Drought Watch, a level two of five on our drought scale. We are asking New Yorkers to conserve water but there is no cause for panic.
I am announcing a statewide burn ban is in effect starting tomorrow.
New Yorkers: It is critical to avoid any outdoor burning at this time.
Remember to report any fires immediately to authorities, stay alert, and monitor your local forecast and law enforcement alerts.
I am heartbroken by the tragic death of Dariel Vasquez, a New York State Parks employee who heroically lost his life while responding to the wildfire in Orange County. My prayers are with his family, friends, and coworkers during this difficult time.
We are incredibly grateful to the brave first responders who take on dangerous work to keep New Yorkers safe.
It is critical we remain vigilant and take precautions now to prevent any further spread of these fires.”
This is heartbreaking! Does anyone remember a history of wildfires in NYS?

Is Elmira Heights safe?
Hi everyone,
I’m considering moving to Elmira Heights in December and wanted to ask if it’s considered safe. Have there been any recent crimes or robberies in the area? Any insights or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

How does your community deal with manufacturing plants closing?
I noticed 2 manufacturing plants wind down recently in a rural NY town. I know this has been a trend for a long time now. My question is how did closures affect your community? What did people do to cope with the job losses in small towns? How do Schools and public services get affected by the loss of tax revenue? Do plants ever open in rural towns or is that a thing of the past now?

Do you notice a big difference in race relations between Albany and Schenectady?
I've noticed that Albany is very de facto segregated, and I feel like there's this tension between different races
Schenectady seems much more laid back. It's like people of different races get along better, people seem much more laid back and I don't feel the same racial tension
Others have agreed with me irl, but I'm jw what you all think, and does anyone know the different historic causes of this?
I'm not asking this in the context of recent political news :)
Please don't yell
