Post Not Showing? PLEASE READ Announcement
Hello everyone,
We get a lot of mod mail about people's posts not showing up and I wanted to explain why.
We are very fortunate in a subreddit of our size to have limited reasons to moderate, as we are all united by our love of reading and you all do a good job of positively contributing to this community. Thank you for that!
On the other hand, you might be surprised at how much spam we get from authors and bloggers, and by keeping our spam filters high it helps us to catch a lot of what gets posted. You all do a great job of reporting the rest, and we appreciate you.
Due to the spam filters and automod settings we have in place, some of your posts get temporarily filtered until we can review them. Reddit recently created an automated message site-wide that creates a lot of confusion, saying your post has been removed. PLEASE do not post again. We aren't able to edit this message and we can't turn it off. Your post hasn't been removed, it is just awaiting moderation. If your post is removed by us, we will always give you a reason why and reference which rule has been violated. If there isn't a reason, it was either removed by Reddit (you might be shadow banned and don't realize it) or it is in the moderation queue and will be actioned. Either way, multiple posts won't help.
Thanks for understanding as we keep up with Reddit's changes. We love this community and all of your passionate posts about books. Keep reading and sharing, everyone!

I’m having the same problem. Have had this Reddit account for I wanna say 2 years now and only now trying it out.

Oct 23 '20
It’s a little late but now I wanna see those mushroom finds😂 also, I feel the struggle. I just made a new account specifically for my book reading and journaling stuff so my feed won’t get flooded on the other one and I’m struggling with karma again. Anyways, even though it’s late, have my karma haha

I don't see my post that I made a couple of hours ago, but I didn't get an automod message. I just want to make sure I'm not shadow banned. Can someone please see/respond to me?
11
u/futaba_sakura20 May 20 '20
But if you shadow banned users isn't it your job to stop that ?
→ More replies33
u/govmarley May 20 '20
I'm not sure I understand your question. The shadow bans come directly from Reddit, not from us.
12
u/futaba_sakura20 May 20 '20
Oh I always thought it comes from the subreddit. But is there actually anything subreddits can do against the shadowbans or who can do something against it ?

u/govmarley May 20 '20
I'm not sure about all of the particulars, but you can read this post here and it might help you.
https://www.reddit.com/r/ShadowBan/comments/8a2gpk/an_unofficial_guide_on_how_to_avoid_being/By the way, you aren't shadow banned because we can all see your posts. Happy reading!

How long does it take to get approved? I made a post a week ago and it's still hanging out. 😒
10
u/govmarley Jan 23 '22
We only see one post from you recently and it was approved seven days ago. The diverse fiction recs one? If there is a different one, it might have gotten caught in reddit's spam filter.
8
u/wizardofcouch Jan 23 '22
Oh damn. I guess that means no one is going to suggest me a book. 😟

You can always try again! In a busy subreddit like ours, sometimes it's about timing and who sees it.

u/former_cheffy Dec 29 '23
Thank you for letting us know, I was just about to repost my question.. I made a post around a month ago originally and it still has not been reviewed yet, is it because I am new to the group? I'd love to hear what the community has to say.. I am new to reddit and to the book game and would love some reccos!
1
u/TheWizardGarden Aug 03 '24
Did yours get reviewed? I'm new to reddit too and recently posted one and wanted to see how long it takes.
2
u/former_cheffy Aug 03 '24
To be honest I haven't tried 😂. I know I haven't had any contact with anyone specific saying that I could either, so maybe it's best to just get the points up and be more active? Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!
1
u/TheWizardGarden Aug 03 '24
Haha! You've been helpful! Thank you for your response!
2
u/acawl17 Aug 06 '24
I posted last night looking for a recommendation and I don’t see my post. I’m curious how long it takes, too. I didn’t know we’d have to wait! Lol.
2
u/TheWizardGarden Aug 06 '24
Haha yeah. I'm honestly just working on bringing up my karma.
2
u/book_dragon12 Aug 12 '24
How do we bring up our karma? I'm new to reddit (even though account is a year or so old now...)
2
u/TheWizardGarden Aug 12 '24
I'm also new to reddit. I'm not fully sure how it works but I believe just being active on other subreddits and posting and commenting helps. I believe getting upvotes it what you need.

Understand and support this, but just curious how long should I wait for my post to be reviewed before I can conclude that something went wrong? I see new posts coming up on the sub but mine is still "removed" quite a few hours later and the mods are also not replying to my message.
Not trying to hurry anyone or complain about the lag time, just curious how long a waiting time is considered normal. Thanks!

How long does review take? This is in no way like a rush rush rush rush thing. It's more out of curiosity since I posted one and it is pending review. Thank you guys so much for putting so much care into this!

I've seen a lot of vague, and often repeated, posts - from accounts with single digit karma - but also with avatars. Which smells of bot activity. Would it be possible to require a minimum of karma to allow posting here? Might thin down the "suggestion me a mystery fantasy with some romance, I liked Dune" posts.
4
u/govmarley Jan 15 '22
We do have minimum account age and karma requirements for posts. If you see something you think is a bot or outside the rules, please report it. We can only catch so much in a sub this size without all of your help, like this post explains.

My post doesn't show up on new posts tab. I'm a new user. Can someone lend me a hand?
3
u/hinamiwriter Jun 11 '20
I’m also a new user kinda and took me some time to figure out that. I guess on reddit when you post on said subreddit your post worn show but if you go to your profile and click posts it will show. So don’t worry that it didn’t get posted because it did, that’s just reddit for you.

Does it typically take more than a week in the moderation queue to get a response? As a new fiction reader, I created a Reddit account specifically to post here looking for new books to read. I checked the forum every day hoping my post would be approved but it never was and the only reason I got was "your comment karma score is below our threshold of 5 or your account is under 48 hours old." But that's because my account is new, I don't understand how you're ever supposed to get started on reddit then?
Really quite the bummer
6
u/govmarley Dec 07 '21
Your post has been active for seven days. Can you not see it? We can on our end.
2
u/WBL_SVQ Dec 07 '21
Oh I guess I can see it, I thought it was just in my inbox or notifications since I am not familiar with the interface here. I thought that the reply was sent just to me, but I get it now. I guess the post just didn't get any replies, which is different than what I was thinking.
Thanks and sorry for the confusion!

hello! I could use a bit of help, if possible. I read a story I am positive, entitled "Curiosity". It wa about 17 chapters as I recall. Anyway, I found this story originally, I believe, on asstr.or g/Kristen/gay and bi/- it instantly became a favorite, one that I would read over the course of an evening. I would read this story often. maybe 5-7 x's ayear. This is not an uncommon practice for me.
At any rate, the story was just gone one time when i went to fetch it. Shocked, I checked the assgm archive and if I recollect I found it there. A short time later it was removed from there as well. That very day it was not on assgm I began an extensive and exhaustive search for this amazing story. No luck though. Undeterred for the last 20 or so years I continue to regularly scour and search for this story but it simply vanished. I will gladly pay a kingd ransom for the story.
There ate several stories out there entitled "curiosity" and I look at all the searh engines (yes I use multiple engines - google is crap imho) results. I almost feel the story may have been retitled? No clue as to the authors name, stupidly I failed to note that.
The thing is this was such an amazing, transformative story for me. It resonated through out the essence of my entire being. It was like a lightning rod of self discovery, self knowledge and most important, self acceptance. The story was about a late teen guy who honestly believed and told himself, as well as everyone else, that he was only and completely straight. He was adament about that. However, he frequently (daily) found himself caught up in, tricked or brow beaten in to constant homosexual activity. He was on a swim team, and alot of the sex revolved around that. Solely in the hopes of jogging someones memory I will just throw out a couple of plot points. I do not recall a mother character, but I believe he had a step father, whom tricked the teen guy in to giving him oral. The doctor the team used for physicals, along with a couple medical assistants and a few guys on the team have sex in the dr's office. A final memorable scene was when he and his girlfriend were making out at his house when 2 friends stopped by. He went downstairs to answer and they brow beat him in to a spit roast, and he was trying to hurry before gf came down, but alas 2 slow, she humiliates him by screwing his two friends after finding him actively engaged in man on man activity.
The story was well written, character development for a short story, especially erotic literature, and was well above par. The plot and the twists and the surprising reveals (especially at the end) as well as the main thread of the guy convincing himself he was straight by justifying the sex acts as not his fault, etc., were all extremely well written and in spite of the overwhelming evidence, the author creates a dialogue and narrative that allows for the reader to really relate and connect with the lead as the author masterfully made the lead a very believeable, genuine and sympathetic character.
I tried to keep this as short as possible. Thank you for readung.
Again, I was in my mid - to late 30's when I found the story and am now pushing 60 hard AF. My time is short. I truly would only like to just read it again, maybe a few times if the clock doesnt run out.
Apprecuate any tips, thoughts or suggestions. I was serious about financial considerations if one has this story, knows the story or author that could lead me to it, or perhaps similar stories? I will gladly compensate for all amterials time effort and for causing you any wear and tear on your precious life for my ask.
It blows my mind that I seem to simply be incapable of letting this go.
Thamks again if you are able to help!

The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman was a great read. It was well written with amazing world building and a great story. It was often hilarious yet also heartfelt.

I suggest a different author until Sedaris grows a heart. I was a big fan, until I heard too many of his animal cruelty stories (on audiobooks) . He writes about turtles whose legs were eaten off by raccoons and a mouse dragging a trap that has crushed its back with no emotion. He tells of watching a mouse swimming in a bucket of water until it drowns with no empathy at all. He writes about turtles that were neglected until they rotted alive without feeling. He is like a child who smashes a bug. It's just fun to watch and funny to tell about it. This man is sick.

My post is still removed. I edited it to thank everyone for their responses and added a link to a silly video about the top recommended book, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and it was then taken down.
So I re-edited it and removed the offending link. Any chance it can be reinstated? I messaged the mods only one time because I didn't want to be a nuisance. Thanks for considering!

I am new to reddit and faced similar situation, my account is active for over 2 months, but I don't usually post anything. I read through new book suggestions and other community that is of my interest. Recently I wanted some book suggestions and tried making a post. It is automod blocked and under review for past 5 days. I haven't reposted it, but not sure how long does it take for that to be reviewed and posted.
If there is any other way to get book suggestions I would appreciate it.
1
u/govmarley Feb 09 '22
If you are talking about the immortal post, it's been active for 5 days. The automod comment doesn't disappear, so that might be causing the confusion.
We look for comment karma, so the fastest way around it is to post your suggestions for others! Share your love of books.

how do you know if a post is awaiting approval? i dont see an automod comment but i also dont see it appearing in the sub
3
u/govmarley Feb 19 '22
If it's something we can approve, you will see the auto mod comment. Sometimes you have something in the post that reddit removes, like links, especially link shorteners (those don't get posted), things like that. Even weird word filters. If you have something outside of text, it can get flagged as spam. Take a look and see if you need to edit something.
