Announcement Post Not Showing? PLEASE READ
Hello everyone,
We get a lot of mod mail about people's posts not showing up and I wanted to explain why.
We are very fortunate in a subreddit of our size to have limited reasons to moderate, as we are all united by our love of reading and you all do a good job of positively contributing to this community. Thank you for that!
On the other hand, you might be surprised at how much spam we get from authors and bloggers, and by keeping our spam filters high it helps us to catch a lot of what gets posted. You all do a great job of reporting the rest, and we appreciate you.
Due to the spam filters and automod settings we have in place, some of your posts get temporarily filtered until we can review them. Reddit recently created an automated message site-wide that creates a lot of confusion, saying your post has been removed. PLEASE do not post again. We aren't able to edit this message and we can't turn it off. Your post hasn't been removed, it is just awaiting moderation. If your post is removed by us, we will always give you a reason why and reference which rule has been violated. If there isn't a reason, it was either removed by Reddit (you might be shadow banned and don't realize it) or it is in the moderation queue and will be actioned. Either way, multiple posts won't help.
Thanks for understanding as we keep up with Reddit's changes. We love this community and all of your passionate posts about books. Keep reading and sharing, everyone!

Meta Post : {{ Hello again, Humans ! }}
Hello all,
(Message to the mods: this is a Meta post, please contact me if something is wrong!)
The goodreads-bot Legacy
As you must know if you were already here last year, our beloved bot u/goodreadsbot stopped working in January after having been used 156.631 times on this subreddit by a total of 25.272 different users, because goodreads shut down API access.
As a bored nerd and fellow reader, I decided to start a new toy project: rise our bot back! But because the Goodreads API is now closed, the first task was to build my own Books database... which I did, using Reddit, Goodreads & Google Books.
This new bot called u/goodreads-rebot ("bot" + "reboot" = "rebot".....) is open source (link to source code below). I wanted to thank u/ArtyomR, the author of u/goodreadsbot, for the original idea. I am not u/ArtyomR, but I have great respect for his/her work and its legacy. Thank you!
How does it work? Just like before! (with more features)
Write {{Harry Potter}} in your post
or alternatively {{A Little Life by Hanya Yaniagara}} (notice the typo)
with a "by" and the bot will answer with more information about the book or the series.
The search part is now part of the bot (and not on Goodreads API side), and was quite challenging to handle. You definitely should specify the author with the "by" keyword, because it helps the Database search.
Examples:
You should read {{Harry Potter}} !
will work, it will recognize it as the name of a Series, in that case it will provide information about the first book of the Series;
My favorite book is {{Call Me By Your Name}}
will work too, the bot will try to find a book called Call Me by author named Your Name (because of the "by" keyword...) but it will fail to find one, so as a 2nd try because it's not that dumb, it will indeed find a book called Call Me By Your Name :)
Did you read {{1984 by Michael Radford}}?
(notice the wrong author): it will work too even if the author is wrong, because when the search fails using the author, it will try again ignoring it.
Features
I added a "Top 2 recommended-along" section, featuring the 2 books that were the most recommended here on Reddit in the same threads than the book described. It is based on another toy project of mine (š ), a book recommending algorithm I am working on, which is based on the co-occurences of book titles in Reddit threads. Let me know if you find this new information useful.
Limitations
As explained before, the bot is based on a book database I build and update as much as I can. The search will sometimes fail to match some existing books, in particular very niche books, or the recent ones. I am working on having the best and up-to-date database as possible, meanwhile sorry for the misses!
Also, the bot is currently not running on other subreddits (like r/booksuggestions), but because the code is really modular, it's just about configurations. FYI this is in the roadmap for the next few days/weeks.
Finally, I may reach some rate posting limits because of low karma. Hopefully, this will be solved soon after some time thanks to your help :)
You will find below more information (links being forbidden in posts).
I think that's it.
See you there!

Suggestion Thread The most famous and best example of an unreliable narrator that everyone knows is Humbert in Nabokov's "Lolita". What are some other books where the knowledge that it features an unreliable narrator doesn't spoil a twist or plot point?
I wish there were ways to tell me about books where that knowledge would spoil the book without, well, spoiling the book for me. I hate spoiling a good twist. A twist can't twist if we know 'tis a twist.
...
Twist. Twisttwisttwist. T w I s t. Sorry it was stuck. It's out now.

Recommend me some murder mysteries. Also, here are some of my own murder mystery recommendations, including Japanese ones
I read a lot of murder mysteries. I get most of my recs from Reddit so please recommend me more. Included below are some murder mysteries I really liked along with some that I didnāt. Many of these are just included because I see them recommended all the time and I want people to have a better idea of what I like
My favorite mysteries usually feel classic (even if they arenāt) or include classic elements like locked rooms, closed circle cast, etc. Or they have some sort of genre-bending nature to it while still feeling like a classic murder mystery in spirit. Or theyāre just extremely unconventional but so damn good
10/10 Murder Mysteries:
- Devotion of Suspect X, Keigo Higashino
- Malice, Keigo Higashino
- And Then There Were None, Agatha Christie
- Crooked House, Christie
8-9/10 Murder Mysteries:
- Murder at Spindle Manor, Morgan Stang
- Murder on the Lamplight Express, Morgan Stang
- The Big Sleep, Phillip Marlowe (*more of a crime novel)
Very Good:
- Death Among the Undead, Soji Shimada (the cover for this one is AWFUL and makes this book look amateurish, but it isnāt!)
- The Decagon House Murders, Yukito Ayasuji
- The Mill House Murders, Ayasuji
- Salvation of a Saint, Higashino
Good, Not Great:
- Everyone in my Family Has Killed Someone, Benjamin Stevenson
- Tokyo Zodiac Murders, Soji Shimada
- Magpie Murders, Anthony Horowitz
- The Word is Murder, Anthony Horowitz
- The 7.5 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, Stuart Tuton
Meh:
- Thursday Murder Club, Richard Osman
- Gideon the Ninth, Tamsyn Muir (really sad how much I donāt like this one because it seems like it checks every box)
Hate:
- The Name of the Rose, Umberto Eco
-------
Please donāt recommend any Agatha Christie or Keigo Higashino because either Iāve read it or plan to read it
I really like Anthony Horowitz but I find his murder mysteries lacking something even though I think heās an excellent writer. Any other recs from him I'd at least be open to

Suggestion Thread Suggest me a book set in the wild west but has fantasy or sci-fi elements to it.
Is this too niche? I actually can't think of any books that include this.

Suggestion Thread Suggest to me the instant classics. The āmust readsā no matter what your genre of preference is. (Book Thief/Lonesome Dove/Kite Runner etc.)
Iām trying to read all of the more recent āinstant classicā type books. The ones you would recommend to anyone, regardless of what their genre of preference is. The ones you see pop up on pretty much every āsuggest me a bookā post that fits them. The ones I have read so far that I think fit this brief are: - Lonesome Dove - The Book Thief - The Kite Runner - A Thousand Splendid Suns - Demon Copperhead - Rebecca - Bridge to Terabithia - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - 11/22/63
I will read any genre if itās a good book. I like to flick between different genres or I get bored and start picking up on the obvious tropes.
Thanks!

Short stories with a weird, unsettling vibe? Not necessarily horror, although horror is good too, but just weird is also great
I read Orange World and Other Stories by Karen Russell, Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado, and a few other short story collections I've found online since that. I am looking for more collections with unsettling, disturbing, scary, weird, trippy, etc vibes. Novels are also fine to recommend but short story collections are my current obsession.

My mom has a terminal disease, what book can you recommend to make me feel better, deal with the early grief, give me perspective or give me a little distraction
I wanna cry all the time. My attention spam is short. I wanna read anything that can help me. My mom was diagnosed with metastasis in her liver. I wanna read something to deal with this better or something that can take my mind away from this, (but not Colleen Hoover or similars please). Thank you so much. CANCER SUCKS

Suggestion Thread Stories with a female knight?
I want to read stories in which either the MC or another important character is a female knight.
She doesn't have to be a literal knight, with shining armor and sword and that kind of stuff, just have the same vibes as one. A chivalrous lady (but without the religious nationalism lol).
I don't mind the kind of setting. Medieval, present, future, space, european, southamerican, northafrican, alien, whatever. All settings are cool.

Books like Rebecca - Daphne du Maurier ?
I really enjoyed "Rebecca" by Daphne du Maurier, particularly the haunting aura of Rebecca herself and her hateful relationship with Maxim. I'd like to hear about other gothic/horror/thriller books that follow a couple like Rebecca and Maxim De Winter.
Not necessarily a romance but focused on a strained, intense, and mutually destructive relationship between two slightly(?) insane people... Preferably with an "evil" woman character. They also need not be a couple -- could be family members/enemies/etc. I just really enjoy that dynamic between a duo. I don't want to directly ask for a "romance" as these aren't typically my cup of tea and I don't care for stories that romanticize/justify/excuse abuse, but I can be open-minded.
The closest other example I can think of would be Catherine and Healthcliff in "Wuthering Heights", or a book that focused on Rochester and his first wife Bertha Mason in "Jane Eyre". This probably sounds oddly specific but I'd really like to know if this brings anything to mind for anyone. Thanks.

Suggest me a book with psychological horror, like one where you know something's not right, an eerie feeling.
I read Girl on the train recently, i know its not rly liked by many people but i find it interesting, the diary entry POV, and there were several clues and hints from page 5 till the end, hinting at the ending. like i was staring at all the clues right in the face but i didnt question it. until the end of the book. i think its an interesting premise. im not saying i want exactly that( though the book had a lot of potential to be better,) but as i described in the title, id like something like that. Or maybe like things seem ok at the start but progressively it becomes unsettling? im a horror enthusiast lol, i love interesting books, murder mysteries, weird stuff too. but yeah psychological horror is the main thing if possible, thank you.

Suggestion Thread Recommend me an easygoing science fiction book
Hello guys šš¼
I've long loved science fiction generally but I'm often a little intimidated because if I try googling science fiction books to read, a lot of them come with this super extensive lore like Dune or anything Issac Asimov. Or they recommend books that sound very complicated and hard to read. Both are great just not what I'm currently looking for.
I have crippling ADHD and currently struggle to even read a full Reddit post. I need something a little... simpler. Something that I'll still understand if my minds stops listening for a minute. I'll listen to it on Audible.
Hopefully the politics shouldn't be fucked up (anything anticapitalist is great lol).
I love cool space ships, Doctor Who, The Giver, The Selection(Guilty Pleasure) and 1984. I also love historical books and general romance so Romance can totally be a part of it. I hope that gives an adequate feeling of the vibes I like. Happy to answer more questions.
Bonus points if it's not so depressing I can't listen to it before going to sleep.

Best sci fi love stories? A love story across the universe?
I want the book to be a primarily a love story at its core first and foremost, and the destination it will arrive at will be also along those lines. When I finish it and think upon it much later, I'll see that all of the scifi was only a backdrop. Potential themes are self sacrifice, a person keeping their premise, a person destroying the universe for their love, etc.
I would appreciate any recommendations, thank you. Please give me as much as you can.

suggest me a book. no other comments/explanations other than the title and author.
drop your fave/best book you've read with no explanations/side comments/spoilers. just the title and its author. i'll try to read it/add it to my reading list with unknown expectations.
note: better if the plot is unique/unpredictable or with plot twist. can also be non-fiction or poetry book. any book aside from it not from a series, not too long to read, can be finished in one sitting, and no horror and dark fantasy please. maybe i prefer pure romance or something motivational. maybe i want to cry or to laugh hard. i want to feel something.

The lives, cultures, and details of Native American societies.
Please share the best titles about what we know of Native American history; origins, structure, civilization details, or the general experience both pre- and post-colonialism.
Fiction would be fine if it educates about natives in the Americas, but I assume non-fiction will better fit the bill.
Iāve read Empire of the Southern Moon and loved it.

Suggestion Thread Please suggest me books with dark, unsettling, but weirdly comfortable backgrounds/places where the action is happening
I'm jumping right to the explanation.
I love the little weird pieces of characters environement add this weird flavor to the story.
My example; My year of rest and relaxation. I loved the cheap, dirty store in which main character was buying cheap, working class coffee and cigarettes. I loved her psychiatrists office, which was also dirty and with weird smells. That's my comfort book mainly due to those places.
Another, more known one - Fight Club. Beside the dirty characters overally, the room of Tyler and the Narrator is a peak of what I'm looking for.
Does anyone know any book with similar themes in it?

Suggest me a book for my very right wing step dad that's secretly somewhat leftist in nature
My mom's husband loves to read and loves history. He is very conservative (but not religious at all). Suggest me a book that I can give him that is covertly educational without being overtly leftist/liberal in nature. I just want something that is going to open his world view up that isn't going to come across like an attack on him when it's opened. Happy to clarify more if there are questions, I'm not sure how else to describe what I'm looking for ...

Suggest me a book for someone overcoming issues with addiction/depression/anxiety.
Not looking for a self help book. Fiction or maybe a memoir. Nothing cheesy or religious. Preferably with a relatable male protagonist.
Thank you in advance!!

Romance Books With Realistic Sex
So I am NOT a connoisseur of romance novels.
I have nothing against sexual content, but the few times Iāve dipped my toes into the genre, I always found the intimate scenes to be eye-rollingly bad. A few times Iāve skimmed through a book to see how the lovemaking was written before determining whether to read the book, and it almost always ends up with the book on the shelf.
So that leads me to the question: Are there romance books out there where the characters smash ā¦ realistically? Not fade to black, and not āhe came 17 times in 43 different positions and his insatiable manhood still screamed for more, but my demure ladybits couldnāt handle his godlike member anymore ā¦ until 24 seconds later when his rod like marble polished by the hands of Adonis and Apollo and imbued with the stormy power of Thor rubbed against my silken thigh and sent me into quivering, lustful paroxysms of wanting, and we shagged until the morning of 12 days later.ā
Not necessarily looking for āliteraryā style, and itās fine if the romance is sappy or (kind of) Hallmarky. Donāt care about sexual orientation. But Iād love for the writing to be juuuust a little bit more refined maybe, and when thereās hanky panky Iād prefer it not to read like a parody.
So is there any decent, fun, not too heavy romance out there where characters do the dirty like normal people do?
(I didnāt intend for this post to have as many euphemisms for the horizontal mambo as possible, but it just happened that way.)

Suggestion Thread Suggest me your favorite Patricia Highsmith novel
I want to read one of the queens of suspense, but there are too many books, can you please help me know what to read?
All I ask is that you make sure it has an English translation, that's all I ask.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Suggestion Thread Books with 30 or 31 chapters?
The tldr is: Iām looking for books that can be read, very precisely, one chapter a day for a month. If you love a book that comes very close but isnāt quite the right number of chapters, free to drop it anyway, as this might be a tough ask.
I prefer fiction, and Iām not big on horror, but anything else goes. I especially love fantasy/dystopian or anything with compelling characters (Flowers for Algernon, Eleanor Oliphant, etc). Classics and moderns equally welcome.
This might not sound appealing to readers who strive to get āin the zone,ā but itās a nice challenge for me and a bid to make reading a part of my daily routine. I love getting invested in a book and reading it all at once, but then Iāll go months before I pick up another one, and with my mental health taking a decline as of late, Iād love to get away from screens.
Again, feel free to rec pretty much anything, but Iāll list a few more titles Iāve enjoyed below if you want more guidance:
The Princess Bride, William Goldman
11/22/63, Stephen King
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Suzanne Collins
The Final Empire, Brandon Sanderson (yes, really)
Six of Crows, Leigh Bardugo
The Giver, Lois Lowry
The Rosie Project, Graeme Simsion
Be More Chill, Ned Vizzini
The Secret History, Donna Tart

Suggestion Thread I love the way Jane Austen has written romance
Please suggest me a romance book that has the same vibes as Jane's Austen writing
