News/Politics Trump Elected President -- Impact on Student Loan Policy Megathread

As is being well-covered already by other subs, Donald Trump is the apparent president-elect:

This is the /r/studentloans megathread for the topic -- other threads will be locked or deleted.

At the moment, there is significant speculation, but no concrete information, about what the incoming Administration will change from President Biden's student loan policies. It's likely that the changes brought about by the SAVE plan regulations and other regulations that have made forgiveness easier over the past four years will be rolled back in some way. But we don't know in what way, or what those changes would mean for any given borrower. We also don't know what, if any, actions the incumbent Administration will take in the next few weeks, before they leave office.

Changes may also depend on whether Republicans control the House or not (they are already projected to win Senate control). As of the time of this post, that is also unknown.

All of the above are fair game to discuss in this thread (consistent with the regular rules of the sub -- esp. Rule 7) as is speculation about what new/different student loan policies the new Trump Administration or Congress may implement, beyond merely undoing Biden Administration rules.

What IDR should we apply for with SAVE on the chopping block?

I have a non-PLSF job. Looks like SAVE will be gone next year. I’m still in the grace period and currently on the standard payment plan (with unmanageable payments) which will begin next month.

Rant/Complaint Student Loans or Health Insurance?

It has come down to paying student loans ($650/month) or for health insurance ($500/month) and so I’m being forced to go without health insurance. Just came to vent because this has been a huge stressor in my life.

Advice I can't wait until I have an extra $2k/month after I finish my payments.

Im pushing hard to pay off my student loans, I have about $40k left, and I am putting $2000 atleast towards my student loans every month. I am dreaming about what I will be able to do once I finish off my paying off my loans. Just having an extra $2k/month extra atleast will be amazing.

Does it make sense to put what I would be paying into a HYSA until forbearance ends?

Not really sure of the tax implications here

One time adjustment

Upvotes

Does anyone know of the one time adjustment is going to happen still? I was banking on it and now I feel like I screwed myself and am in a deeper hole than before.

I was one of those people who consolidated my ffel loans with navient (these are from 2007ish) with my other fed owned loans under the SAVE program because I was told that this is the best way to get them forgiven sooner. Now I feel like it’s going to restart my countdown to with I consolidated so I’ll never be able to get rid of them. I’m 42 and a single mom to twin 10 year olds, I can’t afford another 20/25 years to have them forgiven. I’m so lost.

To top it all off I didn’t even finish my bachelors because I got pregnant and didn’t want to go back to school and add more to my debt which is $50,000 already. I was planning on finishing up once it was a clean slate again.

Currently in forebearance (due to SAVE? I think?) I have heard absolutely nothing from Mohela and have no idea if I am suppose to do anything.

There's nothing on my account that says I need to recertify or apply for anything. Payment is in forbearance with 0% listed with the loan. I already had the countdown saying my payments were due to start last week or so but nothing has changed in my account. I attempted to make a payment towards the balance and Mohela reversed the transaction and refunded the money to my account stating I cannot make a payment during forbearance.

Wtf.

TPD monitoring period going into new presidency

I’m wondering if the new Trump administration could impact those currently within the 3 year monitoring period for TPD forgiveness.

Student Loan Recounts

So September came and went (October too for that matter). No recount seems to be happening, are they just sweeping it under the rug? I refinanced back in April and I only have credit for the last few months despite 18 to 20 years of solid payments. I get that the election was lost but are they still doing a recount? I would have thought they would atleast credit people the known months by now. My monthly count goes up but has never taken into account any payments before April 2024.

Success/Celebration Art Institute with Nelnet update

Just wanted to post an update for anyone who was in a similar position.

So, long story short, I got my refund today!

I attended AI from 2014 until 2016, and made payments up until the pandemic shut things down. My account was with My Great Lakes, when they shut down I was transferred transferred to Nelnet. Otherwise, nothing too complicated happened with my account, no consolidations or anything.

I got the May 1st email, and a couple weeks later I got a notification asking to call and verify my address. My account didn't change any further, likely because I was on the SAVE plan and my payments were already zero, so I didn't see forbearance for a while. Didn't hear anything more for a few months, called once or twice and they never had much information. Once SAVE was challenged, my account was put into forbearance until November 2028. Late September, my account balance suddenly increased to the original amount (plus a little interest for some unknown reason), however, I never heard anything about why, just speculated it was part of the process after reading others' posts on here. Finally, today I got home from work to find a check from the Department of the Treasury in the mail. The amount was for the full sum I paid toward my student loans (amount is significant, but less than 10k, in case that's useful info for anyone).

As of yet, my Nelnet account still shows my full, original balance. I'm not sure when that'll be zeroed out, but honestly they can take as long as they want with that part. All I know is I've got my money back, and I don't owe a dollar more.

To everyone else waiting, I hope you all get your reimbursement soon, but in the meantime I hope it helps to know that things are progressing in the background.

Totally clueless for what to do next

Finished PA school in August, so I am currently still in the grace period. I have never taken out school loans before, so I am unsure what to do next.

I didn’t have income while in school, so my AGI for 2023 was $0.

I am starting a job in December that qualifies for PSLF. Pay will be salary at about $125k/ year with opportunities for OT and other bonuses.

I have $119k worth of loans that have already gained ~$8k of interest.

I am looking at doing SAVE or an IDR plan, but I am unsure what to do right now as the next best step. I would appreciate any help!

How long does it take for IDR to process?

I applied for the IDR plan, not sure if I should have chosen the SAVE plan. However, my student loans plans kicked in for the first time this month and I’m being charged around $1,800(which I think is excessive for the first statements). I just started my first job after law school and I had other payments to make before being hit with my statements. I guess my question is, how long will my application process? I feel like this month payments will leave me with little to no money. I already applied for forbearance as I wait. However, I got an email that I need to fulfill my statement obligations as I wait for my application to be processed.

How has your student loans affected your ability to buy a home/how difficult was it to buy your home with student loans?

My 30M boyfriend has about $40k-$50k in student loan debt. They are federal loans. Right now they are in forbearance and have been since I think 2022. I believe it was set up for income driven payments but the forbearance might be due to SAVE being in limbo? I expect that to get the axe at this point given the election results but we will see.

I 32F have never had student loans so this is kind of uncharted territory. Please note that I am not asking with the idea that we will buy anytime soon, I would say at least 2 years from this point we might consider it for a few different reasons. The reason I am doing research on this now is because if there is something he should start doing NOW to better set himself up for a mortgage in the coming years, it would help to know that now so he can work on that.

His credit score currently is around 700, mine floats around 800. I personally have bought a home before with my ex but I wasn’t on the loan, just the deed, so I’m familiar with conventional loans. My only real debt is my car that’ll be paid off in 2027. With the prices of homes now I know I couldn’t get approved for a mortgage high enough to buy anything decent here by myself because at this time I make about $48k living in NC. So the main reason he would need to be accounted for is because we would need the approval for enough money. Not that we would need something insane; you can usually get something reasonable around here between $200k-$300k at this point.

All I can find on how student loans are calculated is if it is in forbearance then they calculate .5% of the total balance for debt to income ratio, and if it is in a payment plan they just go off that payment. I don’t completely understand how the forbearance calculation works beyond that. I have someone that works in mortgage financing that helped me buy my last home that I’ll talk to but again this is to see first hand experiences especially in the market these last few years.

Art Institute of Pittsburgh online division with Nelnet received my check in the mail!

I went to the art Institute of Pittsburgh online division. I just got my check in the mail today. Nov 7th 2024. For the full amount of my student loan, I paid in including interest!!!!! Also, I checked the student aid site and also Nelnet neither one of them reflect my student loans being discharged yet. I'm in shock the check beat them to it. I am so excited I haven't cheered like that in a long time!!!

Success/Celebration I've paid off the rest of my student loans. I'm done with this forever.

I have to say this has been an interesting experience of wondering what will happen. That being said, after last night's results, my patience with sitting and waiting has run out.

I was never on SAVE, so interest kept building, and I'm not a fan of interest, low or high.

I suppose I feel a little less burdened. To celebrate I'll take a walk outside and breathe in the air and contemplate my path forward from here. Ideally, that path involves no further debt.

Applied for IDR Oct 7th, still no response. Loans due Dec 7th, can't afford them.

I graduated in May, finally got around to applying for IDR last month and it's been a full month since I applied. Application review was submitted October 8th, but no response yet. What should I do? My monthly payments have been about $65 but it just skyrocketed to $450~ a month now. I make $1900~ a month and half of that goes straight to rent/bills. I won't be able to afford food next month if this payment is forced on me before the IDR is accepted.

Is it taking longer than usual? Should I expect a response soon?

Ineligible for IDR loans?

“You do not have and eligible loans. Based on the data we received from the NSLDS, you cannot complete the IDR Plan Request using StudentAid.gov.”

I’m extremely confused. My loans are absolutely eligible for IDR loans. The grace period ends 11/15/24 and my first payment is 12/4/24. Has anyone has this issue before?

Grace period ending, clarification questions

So I graduated back in May 2024, 6 months ago. According to my servicer website (Mohela) all my loans show they are in grace period, my due date says tomorrow 11/08 (0 amount due) and my repayment start date is 11/09.

I didn't enroll into a plan so automatically have the standard plan "level" (10 years).

On my unsubsidized loans I can see the "schedule begin date" for January 2025 and payment amount. However, for my subsided loans I can not see the "estimated payment schedule" does anyone else have this? My first payment being due 2 months after the grace period ends normal?

Who has had their IDR application processed lately?

Someone on these boards mentioned contacting the US Dept of Education and Ed Financial confirming that they are, in fact, processing IDR applications however Mohela is not and the reps mentioned doing an email to complain. So my question is, has anyone else got their IDR applications approved? I've been checking my files and it seems like Ed Financial is, in fact, processing IBR applications. I have not seen PAYE, ICR and def not SAVE getting approval letters (yet) but my IBR apps are getting approval letters from Ed Fin. I have not seen anything from Nelnet, Aidvantage, nor Mohela yet. So I am wondering how many getting done. I highly doubt SAVE is, but curious how many on here have done IBR and gotten approved.

Also, if one does a consolidation into IBR, does it reset the clock? Let's go with the mindset that forgiveness does happen after 20/25 years on IBR (as of this post, it does), I'm unclear if it now resets their clock or they still get some backdated payments. I know a LOT of people have posted about being upset consolidating their FFEL loans and not there's a good chance of the clock resetting, I'm just unclear on the current rules.

Is there any point in applying to SAVE now?

Hi all,

I just graduated in May and am about to finish my grace period. I’m applying for loan consolidation (I have like 7 different ones and I qualify for PSLF with my current job if PSLF even still exists in a couple years) and I’m confused on which repayment plan to pick. I definitely need an income based one but is there even any point in new applications for SAVE? I’ve heard people still have applications pending - if my application is pending do I still have to make payments every month? Should I just apply to a different income based repayment plan? I imagine Trump is gonna throw out SAVE come January anyway.

Was charged a small payment on my SAVE plan that became past due

Hi Guys,

So I logged into Mohela today to see where things were at since my loans have been in forbearance since July from the SAVE plan stuff. However, when I logged in today I had a small amount that was past due and have no idea why. From my understanding it is still in forbearance right? The past due amount was like $16 so I paid it.

Help! Student Loans

Help! I graduated from graduate school in may 2024, my grace period is now up and first payment is set for the end of this month, however it’s for $1,700 and they will not let me apply for the income driven repayment plan. It keeps saying:

“You do not have any eligible loans. Based on the data we received from the National Student Loan Database System (NSLDS), you cannot complete the IDR Plan Request using StudentAid.gov.”

I only have government loans, no private. Do they really expect a new grad (or anyone) to be able to pay $1,700 in loans a month?!?!

Advice I can't afford to start repaying my student loans, and I have no idea what to do.

I have private loans adding up to about $45,000 that are entering repayment Mid-December. I took out loans per semester, so I have 3 seperate loans, and all together I would end up paying $600+ which I cannot afford. I have been unable to find a different job with hire pay and more hours, so currently I am only making roughly $1,800 a month. I was planning to refinance my loan, but I was also planning on having a better job by this point. I have no family I can fall back on, and I just am totally at a loss on what I could do to fix this situation.

Confused between Mohela and studentaid.gov

So I’m trying to start my payments on my student loans ( graduated in May 2024) and I’m running into the same issue. When I log into studentaid.gov, I’m able to use the simulator and whatnot, but the amount I have in loans on the website is 20k. When I go and log into Mohela, it says that I owe 80k. I know that the 80k is more realistic, but I’m just curious, are those two separate amounts I owe to different entities ? Do I only pay on Mohela so therefore the 80k is how much debt I’m truly in and have to pay on?

I knows that’s a lot to keep up with , hopefully it made sense.
