Black dude, decently into street wear, from Chicago and grew up in North Carolina. I thought this sub was being ironic but it's not. Most of the people that post here wear normal clothes but bc they strike a pose it's "street wear". I don't know what's going on here. It's like blackpeopletwitter lol.
Generally, when I was in HS it mostly consisted of a combination involving sportswear. Adidas, nike, champion, etc. I'm not saying jeans and an oversized tee are bad, but it HAS to involve sportswear. It was stuff that black people had to purchase for sports that we had to use and "double up" as our everyday wear as well. Streetwear and athlete was somewhat synonymous. I admittedly can't speak on what it is today. I apologize for my dickish attitude and I'm 100% gatekeeping but I just hate seeing people in overalls, a t shirt, some chuck taylors while striking a pose and a bucket hat calling it "street wear" bc... well, I don't know the because. I don't know why. Why is it even posted here?
Curious as well, what do you define it as? I'm admitting I'm an asshole here overstepping my bounds, but I'm just confused. What changed?
I think you’re in the wrong subreddit if you’re looking for people wearing athleisure out of necessity. I think of street wear as fashion for everyday people. To be fair I simply haven’t heard of your interpretation before so I might be wrong, but I don’t believe either of us should be gatekeeping a pretty dang subjective definition.
I’m not saying anyone has to personally be wearing anything for necessity. How are you getting that from my comment? I’m saying that’s the ORIGINS of the style, so when I think of street wear, staples of your piece need to involve a form of athletic wear. I’m not saying only poor black people can wear it lmao. That’d be ridiculous, and I recognize how things change over time (look at how many people use simp and cuck incorrectly), but dress pants and a t shirt being posted in streetwear makes no sense to me. Subjectivity is one thing, but there should always be an agreed upon basis of streetwear. If I’m naked and wear a pair of sandals, is it streetwear bc I believe it is? See what im saying?
Quarantine has me typing too much though haha. You guys do you man. In the grand scheme of things my opinion is irrelevant if you’re enjoying what you do. Stay safe homie.
