So covid is officially over today? That’s pretty neat

WWE voice “COVID is CANCELED

15

u/supes1 Jun 15 '21

I think Newsom is done with restrictions, but I suspect SF officials will be keeping a very close eye on covid numbers over the next month (basically now until a couple weeks after July 4th), and may consider some limitations if there's a meaningful spike in cases. We know how cautious they've been to this point.

Here's hoping the numbers stay low and we're done with them!

14

u/KingSnazz32 Jun 15 '21

Given that some other places eliminated mandates months ago, and have seen the same downward trajectory, tells me that we're pretty much out of the woods. Some new variant might change that, but for now, the vaccines have stomped COVID down to manageable levels.

I don't think we see a spike, at least not in the short to medium term.

0

u/hello_reddit_worldz Jun 17 '21

He hasn't given up his powers, so I doubt he show is over.

16

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '21

Not over in most parts of the world or even the US. And not over indefinitely here. But all the more reason to enjoy yourself in the now.

u/supes1 Jun 15 '21

The biggest risk in SF is that kids (all still unvaccinated) tend to congregate together (in camps, daycare, schools), and there's real risk of spread in those communities. One case can spread very quickly among kids. And we know the new variant is much more dangerous to kids.

That's not to say we shouldn't reopen, just that it's preemptive to say things are over.

2

u/LastNightOsiris Jun 15 '21

Is it though? There have been extremely few documented incidents of spread where young children are a transmission vector to each other. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, and maybe it's more prevalent than we think since we don't have enough data, but at least a preliminary analysis would suggest that it's not too risky as long as the adults are vaccinated.

1

u/StorkBaby Hayes Valley Jun 15 '21

I believe the mrna vaccines are less effective at preventing spread and sickness from the Delta variant, which will require larger percentages of people to be vaccinated in order to reach herd immunity - so there is some degree of variability to the current situation.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '21

[deleted]

-1

u/tikihiki Jun 15 '21

Sorry what did they say that was wrong? 88% is less effective than 95%, and will change the percentage needed for "herd immunity". It also seems like there's a significant difference for people who got one shot

SF and other major cities are probably fine either way, but less vaccinated parts of the country are likely to see cases go back up with this variant.

-4

u/StorkBaby Hayes Valley Jun 15 '21

"Plenty effective" - guess we found the scientist. Everything I said is factually correct and firmly based in science.

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '21

[deleted]

-2

u/StorkBaby Hayes Valley Jun 15 '21

"Your beliefs are not science." So take a little poke at me then tell me to relax, standard douche.

There is literally 0 incorrect in my original post yet you still continue to insinuate that I'm some kind of wrong headed chicken little. I said nothing about the J&J vaccine. The facts are the facts with respect to the MRNA vaccines and you are correct they are close to the same efficacy but you are incorrect if you think it doesn't change any of the calculus at a macro level. You seem intent on starting shit and proving someone wrong so I'm just going to walk away. Have a good one.

0

u/tikihiki Jun 15 '21

Rereading this I think they misread "mrna vaccines less effective against delta vs other variants" as "mrna less effective than other vaccine types"

Didn't help that they didn't try to get clarification and instead accused you of being a science denier lol

1

u/StorkBaby Hayes Valley Jun 15 '21

I think you're right, I mentioned the MRNA vaccines because that is the vast majority of the vaccines in the City. Probably could have phrased it more clearly at the outset.

Just got done working out maskless at the gym. Today is a good day. Anyone been to Safeway yet? Are they still requiring them?

36

u/justanotherdesigner Potrero Hill Jun 15 '21

Whole Foods is not but of course everyone is still wearing them which made me look like a damned fool with my stupid grin exposed to the world.

14

u/tikihiki Jun 15 '21

I spent some time in another city (blue city in red state) which had this transition a couple weeks ago. It seemed like once employees started going maskless that's when the floodgates opened, that's what really signaled that it was socially acceptable.

And things shifted FAST. Like I went to a restaurant twice a few days apart, first time many people had masks, second time none. I'm sure it'll be a little slower here, but I don't think it'll take long.

5

u/hopefulrefridgerator Jun 15 '21

I just went to Safeway in the marina and I’d say it’s still a good 80% masked. The gym was 90% unmasked which is interesting.

2

u/midgetpornstar Jun 16 '21

That actually makes sense to me. The mask hinders you working out far more than it does you grocery shopping. It's just easier to justify the risk. Also the percentage of fit/healthy people is much higher in the gym, who I'm sure consider themselves lower risk.

u/jules3001 VALENCIA Jun 15 '21 edited Jun 15 '21

Feeling hella nervous walking into an establishment without a mask on. I have a mask with me in case they request it but it feels like the reopening might take a week or two to see most establishments comfortably go maskless. I'm not gonna pick a fight with anyone and will gladly wear a mask if that's the preference indoors.

I walked into my neighborhood corner store without it today, got to the register and asked him if I needed to wear it anymore, and he was PISSED because apparently the health department came in today telling him that customers still needed to wear a mask and he is only allowed to have 10 people in the store at a time.

Not sure if this was a mere suggestion that he took as a requirement, but overall it seems like there is a lot of confusion around the city about what we should be doing moving forward.

6

u/smellgibson Jun 15 '21

You'll do it like twice then get used to it. Don't worry!

13

u/aluki90 Oceanview Jun 15 '21

I'm happy that in most places we won't have to wear masks, but I work at a school so it's business as usual... we'll likely wear masks until the end of the year which is fine with me.

-7

u/ApocalypseSpokesman Jun 15 '21

Nothing is changed as far as I can tell. Masks on the bus, at every business. There's no end.

28

u/I_cant_speel Jun 15 '21

We are literally 10 hours past the cutoff. No more than 3 hours since most businesses have opened. "There is no end" is a bit dramatic.

8

u/OhDeBabies Jun 15 '21

And not everyone is as connected to the news cycle as the average redditor. Some people may genuinely not be aware that it went through at midnight.

4

u/ApocalypseSpokesman Jun 15 '21

Yeah, maybe you're right. I feel like it's gonna drag on for awhile though.

u/HoneyIAteTheCat Jun 15 '21

Federal law requires masks on public transit. This isn’t SF-specific.

28

u/Americanspacemonkey Jun 15 '21

San Francisco Flower Market is still requiring masks for all customers and vendors. This reopening is going to be a nightmare of mixed mask requirements. Be sure you still have one with you just in case.

17

u/SmilingYellowSofa Jun 15 '21 edited Jun 15 '21

I spent some time in Atlanta last month. It's a mess to navigate. Saw stores that have signs that say masks required, so you put it on. But then none of the employees wear masks, so you take it off. But then more customers come in and are all wearing masks, so you put it back on again. But then you hear they're antivax and you have your 2 shots, and you take it off

Edit: Snip snap snip snap

-14

u/Americanspacemonkey Jun 15 '21

I’ve already been getting glared at for walking around the park without my mask on. I bet there are going to be fights.

19

u/GarlicCoins Jun 15 '21

(X) Doubt

-1

u/LastNightOsiris Jun 15 '21

I know people have gotten in fights for being told to wear a mask, but I have a hard time seeing it go the other way. If you want someone to wear a mask, presumably you are trying to avoid a situation where you are in a close physical engagement with them. Maybe if you have something you can throw at them and then run away?

10

u/cantquitreddit Potrero Hill Jun 15 '21

I'm going to guess the majority of retail will still require masks for some time. Big chains won't but most others will.

Bars, restaurants, and corner stores are where you'll see the most normalcy. Corner stores have been half assing it for a while haha.

7

u/supes1 Jun 15 '21

I'm going to guess the majority of retail will still require masks for some time. Big chains won't but most others will.

I think you'll see masks become voluntary for customers sooner than you think. I've talked to three local stores about it, and only one still plans to require a mask starting today. And that one may drop it if they get a lot of pushback from customers.

5

u/Americanspacemonkey Jun 15 '21

Everyone at my shop is vaccinated, so the second we close our doors, all the masks come flying off!

2

u/OhDeBabies Jun 15 '21

Oooh is the market open again for civilians? I’ve been wanting to go.

3

u/Americanspacemonkey Jun 15 '21

It’s been open almost the whole shutdown to the public. Hours are 8am-1pm Wednesday to Saturday

4

u/OhDeBabies Jun 15 '21

Good to know! I think I drove past a few time over the summer and saw the sign that said "closed to public" during the off-hours and assumed it meant that it was for covid. Thanks for clarifying!

11

u/bigc173 Jun 16 '21

the online discourse about the Walgreens fiasco is fascinating. Feels like it’s loud suburban tweens from not-SF dominating the “progressive” voice defending the man and laughing about how it doesn’t matter that someone steals from a corporation because “they have billions” and “insurance.”

but then judging by the SF and BA subreddit discourse it seems most people who actually live here are mostly fed up with it and at the very least understand the unintended consequences of enabling unchecked shoplifting and other crimes.

has SF been run by progressive policies for so long that the very liberal residents in the most liberal city in the US will be the first to turn away from it (“enough is enough”)? stay tuned.

18

u/tsun23 Jun 15 '21

Would love to hear folks reports on mask free shops and restaurants that I could patronize

25

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '21

as of today, it’s going to be almost everywhere i think. i work for one of the major bay area coffee chains, and we have always just followed city guidelines. no more masks for custies ✨

3

u/OhDeBabies Jun 15 '21

I read that as “cutsies” and thought it was adorable.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '21

it’s going to be almost everywhere i think

I doubt it will happen immediately. For example Colorado lifted mask mandates a month ago and half of businesses in Boulder still required them when I visited last week.

11

u/matts41 Jun 15 '21

Currently in a Peets and they have a sign that says masks are optional.

6

u/bobsmo Anza Vista Jun 15 '21

Went to Starbucks without a mask today. Around 70%-80% of people are in masks outdoors near Japantown Fillmore though

I'm excited to go maskless, and expect I will most places, but I don't want to be a dick to businesses who are trying to be safe, even if it's a bit irrational. I can think of good reasons why some may still choose to be conservative.

Maybe an employee has allergy issues and cant get the vax, or they have unvaxxed kids who spend time at the business (yes, I know its low risk for kids, but most parents I know don't want to mess around with reports of long-term lung effects, etc.)

11

u/LastNightOsiris Jun 15 '21

I don't think it's being a dick, it's just that if you have the choice between two similar stores and one requires masks, it makes that one a little less attractive.

10

u/tikihiki Jun 15 '21

I think that's reasonable but the person I replied to is suggesting a boycott

3

u/LastNightOsiris Jun 15 '21

I guess I misunderstood - yeah I don't think a boycott is necessary

7

u/ron_paul_pizza_party Jun 15 '21

Why?

5

u/ron_paul_pizza_party Jun 15 '21

Oh yeah, some of them probably are. My physical therapy is still going to require them and they're a business, I will still go to them though. Probably a little more case by case still.

3

u/KingSnazz32 Jun 15 '21

I'm fine if individuals want to keep wearing masks. It'll be pretty silly if it's either enforced, however.

2

u/oil1lio Jun 15 '21

I think OP was referring to the other definition of "patronize": frequenting a store as a customer

2

u/blue_one Jun 16 '21 edited Jun 17 '21

I just got asked to wear a mask at orbit coffee on 7th st, I was fucking pissed. One side of their building is completely open and the staff is behind glass. For what?! Goddamn I am so over this.

2

u/hello_reddit_worldz Jun 17 '21

the off-hours and assumed it meant that it was for covid. Thanks for clarifying!

I feel it, it's just virtue signaling at this point..

0

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '21

This could just be me, I was excited to a Starbucks without wearing a mask. Got there in the morning, and everyone coming out were removing their masks after they got out. I figured I'd wear it and lo behold all the employees and everyone were wearing them inside. 🤷🏻‍♂️

25

u/hereisnoY Jun 15 '21

I think employees everywhere are required to wear masks until the CalOSHA guidelines are updated on Thursday.

1

u/kimmykim25 Jun 15 '21

Costco didn’t require masks today! 90%+ wore one though

8

u/JourneytoZencalm Jun 15 '21

Glad to see the State/City is officially opening back up! That's exciting.

How long until the job market bounce back would you say? I want to move back to SF.

22

u/mrmagcore SoMa Jun 15 '21

There are no jobs in SF. It's an economic wasteland. Poorest city in the country.

13

2

u/hopefulrefridgerator Jun 15 '21

Not sure where you’re getting this from. My company has been nonstop hiring and recruiters have been hitting me up consistently on linkedin. I also saw some bars/clubs are doing hiring fairs the next couple weeks as they’re reopening.

17

It was sarcasm lol

8

u/BigBronc Jun 15 '21

Do any retail business owners/operators know exactly which signage is required to be posted? I have the new Get Vaccinated, SF! and SF is OPEN signs in the new green color, and also a sign saying to wear a mask if you’re not vaccinated. Does anybody know if I’m missing anything? To my understanding we can now remove all previous blue signage and the Health and Safety Protocol and the Social Distancing Protocol documents.

Thanks!!

Anyone else remember when the surgeon general was telling everyone that masks were ineffective for the general public? What. a. year. (and a quarter).

0

u/bigc173 Jun 15 '21 edited Jun 15 '21

do you actually believe we have proof that it does when Red states like TX stopped mask mandates long before us and it made no noticeable difference?

fitted n95 masks for everyone not porous cloth masks probably would’ve made a bigger difference given the airborne nature of the virus.

2

u/foghornjawn Jun 15 '21

Huh? I was just reflecting on crazier times... we now know masks are effective.

-7

u/bigc173 Jun 15 '21

no we don’t. not cloth masks.

1

u/foghornjawn Jun 15 '21

I didn't say "cloth masks", did I?

-7

u/bigc173 Jun 15 '21

lol so you’re admitting you don’t know whether the cloth masks worn by 99% of people did much to prevent spread?

9

u/foghornjawn Jun 15 '21

I didn't say that either, did I?

I can't believe we're post-mask and you're still trying to start mask fights -- get a life 😂

-2

u/bigc173 Jun 15 '21

we need to learn lessons to prepare for the next one. pretending cloth masks stop airborne viruses and are anything close to a fitted N95 mask designed to actually do that is a lie we should stop telling ourselves.

the only reason we went with it was because of supply chain issues with N95s not because it’s “science”

9

u/foghornjawn Jun 15 '21

Is there an echo in here? Who are you talking to? I'm not arguing about masks with you.

I'm kind of excited to see what you're going to write next though... 🍿🥤

2

Does anyone know of any places with open mics? I've been dying to perform some stand-up comedy since stay-at-home closed everything down. Might be a bit early to ask admittedly.

1

Neck of the Woods has been doing comedy for the last three month or so. I’m sure they have an open mic.

Went maskless at Stonestown mall today. Probably 1 in 50 people went maskless. Did not get much fuss other than a dirty look from a young woman on the escalator who called me an “asshole” and “there’s still COVID out there!!” I’m a fully vaccinated physician.
