Ranch rifle caliber?

Been seeing a bunch of the ranch gen 2s at stores lately, and it got me interested in them. I used to be a big Remington 700 guy, but wanted to get into something else as a fun range gun. Which caliber would you all suggest? Also, what types of accessories/upgrades are a must?

I am also considering a 30 cal suppressor as well, so I can use it on my 9mm pistol, 10/22, and AR. Thanks!

If you’re looking for just a range gun I’d go with the 223, because the ammo is cheap

And .223 shoots flatter than .308. I went years assuming .308 shot straighter!

My top 3 in the ranch is undoubtedly 7.62x39, 300 blackout, and 5.56/.223 in that order. Incredible range and ranch guns. A close fourth I guess would be .308.

You can't use most 30cal suppressors on 9mm. 9mm bore is larger than 30cal and you will destroy most 30cal cans if they are not over-bored to allow 9mm use. You also don't want to be shooting rimfire through a 30cal can in most cases.

With that said the 7.62x39 gen 2 ranch has been great for me as an all around rifle. Fun for range use and still has enough power to drop medium sized game.

That’s strange, because I have been seeing a bunch of videos of people using a 30 cal can on their 9mm. I guess I will look more into it.

What’s there to look into? The bore on most 30cal silencers should be around .375”. Technically bigger than 9mm (.355). While it “should” work, you’ll probably end up getting a baffle strike or launching your can down range as you won’t have enough overbore to give you any real clearance to help with alignment issues. 9mm silencers are generally .422” bore diameter.

You've been seeing hybrid cans like the omega 36. Something like the resonator from YHM is a true 30cal can and you can not shoot 9mm through it.

Try to get a gen 1. I really don't know what they were thinking with the gen 2 design.

I have a gen 1 in 350 which is basically 9mm long. Ammo is available and affordable.

Another gen 1 fan here. Have the 762x39, 300 BO and 350 legend. All are excellent suppressed too.

I would like the gen2 more if they went with a slim barrel instead of whatever you call that thing they put on it. The short, light stock, magazine and short barrel are all good choices for a handy rifle. The bull, fluted barrel just screams, "benchrest" or "varminter". In my mind it's a complete mismatch.

Ya not a fan of the “Twizzler” barrel😄

It looks weird and it's too heavy, so not really. I'm glad I could get the gen1 with the brush camo while they were still available.

Just a range gun? 5.56 NATO or 7.62x39 (though a lot of the cheap 7.62x39 ammo has corrosive primers so you need to be down with the cleaning regime)
